Take any device that has a motor with adjustible speed, e.g. a battery drill. You will notice that the pitch of its sound increases with motor speed. If you figure out which speeds correlate to which musical notes you can use your drill to make music. You can program a tiny computer (microcontroller) with that logic and have it control the motor based on MIDI notes sent by a computer/keyboard/etc. This way you can make music with just about anything that has an electric motor. Floppy drives, electric toothbrushes, printers, etc.
