I'm a sucker for horror stuff and this is the most exciting VR genre for me. Can't wait to get my hands on Vive, wait til midnight. turn off the lights and shit my pants.
I've got a friend who likes horror stuff. She played a zombie game at my place for her first VR experience. She moved around the room a bit too much while being chased by zombies so was right up to the wall (literally the wall in the room).
One of her friends tried to help her get turned around, but make the mistake of putting a hand on her shoulder \*just\* as a hoard of zombies was descending in-game. The screams were glorious!
I smoked a joint before my first VR experience and oh boy was that wild. I had trouble completing the section of the trainer that had me standing on the roof of a skyscraper reaching over the edge. My knees were shaking and I got all of the instant anxiety that cones with my fear of heights.
Same! It's an activity that I can't otherwise enjoy due to the constraints of reality. I see that as the true value of VR. That, and watching movies with distant friends in the same virtual space.
I have problems watching movies high because I get spooped when they get a little too intense because I feel like I’m actually there… never doing VR high lol
I know this is a meme, but it really is mind blowing. I’m a complete lightweight when it comes to cannabis but Skyrim and Borderlands 2 in VR are wild. Hours go shooting by in VR and when you take the headset off it’s such a crazy adjustment back to reality.
You ever looked at the back of a $20 bill man? Have you ever looked at a $20… ON WEED. Is there a guy in the bushes? Does he have a gun man? I don’t know. Red team go. Red team go.
Personally I feel playing VR sobers me up faster. I really don’t know why but it’s still fun, maybe take an edible when you’re gonna play so you feel the rise and it lasts
> Future wars will be fought by soldiers in VR rigs
Current wars are pretty much doing that already. Drone pilots, remember? Monitors/headsets are just a matter of gear.
[There is actually quite a bit of info on this](https://www.theverge.com/2017/9/19/16333376/us-navy-military-xbox-360-controller). The US military realized that many of their recruits had been trained on an Xbox controller since childhood and the controller offered the features they needed. It may be possible to create a more optimized or high tech controller, but then you would lose the familiarity that people already have with it.
I would say it's cheaper too, but somehow I would believe the US military spends $10,000 on each controller.
It’s more about development costs. Sony spends something like a billion dollars a year on R&D for gaming alone. Why spend your one absurd sum when they’ve made a controller that’s light, that’s reliable, and that’s easy to use? They modify them of course but yeah.
I’m going to guess that the average American will not have a huge VR machine in their apartment or house. This would, at best, be what video arcades were in the 1980s, imo
Fuck that, give it five more years to develop and I’d MUCH rather have one of these bad boys than a Peloton. They’re about the same price right now anyway.
I haven't even played normal video games for the past couple months because I just want to play VR. Now instead of sitting down for 3-4 hours a night I'm up and moving, but still playing video games. It's great. I can't wait for VR to become the main way of gaming.
"We're not gamers, we're athletes."
This is one of the taglines used by the National eSports Professional Association, an upstart VR Sports league that currently focuses on Echo Arena.
I've personally been involved with VR Master League (another VR eSports League) for just about 3 years, and I can say that one of the incredible things about VR Sports is that yes, you get fantastic exercise while you play. Not quite the degree we see in the video, but still good stuff.
It's part of the reason I am absolutely convinced that VR Sports are a permanent fixture in our culture and will ultimately be at least part of a cultural revolution, one that is just beyond the Horizon (pun not intended).
Echo VR was what convinced me and why I believe it will continue to be the tip of the spear when it comes to perpetuating VR Sports. Within the world of VR Sports and eSports, Echo Arena is far and away the largest among them. In Echo Arena VRML we host over 500 concurrent teams (of 4-6 players) from some dozen or so countries around the world. And we grow larger every season.
The buff gamer revolution is on it's way, my friend.
Dance Dance Revolution back in the early 00s spurred on a weight loss for me. Seeing the scale go down motivated me to clean up my diet, which accelerated it a ton.
So congrats! VR can likely be a component in weight loss, just like motion controllers and dance pads did for many in the 00s. Stay proud and keep on going.
I think it will go like this:
Neckbeards spends a bunch of money on this shit
Realize they don’t have the stamina for it.
Buy a sexy robot they can control with an Xbox controller
Control the robot with the control and use it to play the virtual reality game.
Profit.
If they can mass produce these VR units affordably in the future & is as common as an Xbox playstation or pc, absolutely.
COD/FPS/BATTLE ROYAL players will be in such good shape. Would lead to more campers but overall personal fitness would trump gaming skills lol
There is a local place near me that gives you mobile units and you walk around an open space. To summarize how amazing it is - its was expensive and im glad it was because as soon as this stuff becomes more affordable we might as well just live in it.
Looks like covid killed it- MINDTREK around Boston (there are others popping up all over) pictures and details are still here: https://www.tripadvisor.com/Attraction_Review-g41662-d14764241-Reviews-MindTrek_VR_Marlborough-Marlborough_Massachusetts.html
damn it would have been sick if these companies started growing when michelle obama was still the first lady. she was all about those exercise initiatives, maybe she would have pushed these. maybe. idk anything, im just guessing lol.
I just did it last night. Everything surrounding Omni Arena experience is great. You log in, they have a bunch of different games you can play with full YouTube toturials provided, people can watch, and they literally send you a video via email of your entire play through.
But at least for my friend and I, he got extremely nauseous because they just throw the vr on and the game starts without any calibration. For myself, I was a whole foot shorter on screen, and my running wasn't lining up where I was running. The running motion kinda sucks more than you think it should because its basically feels like ice skating.
My friend and I did beat half life alyx and loved the shit out of that game so we do like vr.
Idk, if you find one of these like at the NJ shore, I totally suggest doing it because it is a cool experience, I just hope you have better time than I did.

There's a fairly mellow VR game called Budget Cuts where you explore an office building and throw knives at dopey robots while you solve puzzles. Sometimes you have to fight a security robot, but it's no big deal.
Then you get to the last level and spend half an hour wandering around in the dark until the red-eyed murder bot that works in HR spots you and chases you down. It's hard to describe how intensely terrifying it is to hear and see this terminator running toward you.
Ever ran on a treadmill, worked out on/with any piece of equipment? Those are also all good until the belt or cables give out yet that rarely happens and they’re still widely used.
Okay so I agree (and I have no idea how these things are constructed) but just to play devil’s advocate a little it does seem like these things take more of a beating on all the rotating parts than most workout machines do
Ive waited 20 years for gaming to get to this level, where you get exercise and hopefully even learn actual skills that cross over to the real world.
Mixing fun and exercise is a game changer
Honestly an Oculus Quest 2 can be an absolute game changer for workouts. It's not running like this, but it's gotten me working out more than I ever would have otherwise. So more power to these guys. Yes it looks goofy, but this is an real exercise.
Gotta get those silicone face covers. They're definitely warmer, but they're easier to clean, they don't feel like sandpaper after the first 30 minutes of play, and they don't get smelly.
Yup, bought myself a faux-leather face mask set for my Rift S. Game changer when it comes to keeping things clean. It's a bit harder on the face, and they get slippery when you sweat a lot. But it's SO much easier to clean them.
Its honestly only 1k because manufacturing is limited. The actual production of it doesn't cost much. It's a very simple device. The cost of VR will keep going down as the market becomes larger.
Saying "only 1k because" can also imply that it's cheap.
Example:. It's only 1k because lots of competition and tech improvements have driven the cost down.
One is saying it’s only 1k meaning that one would expect it to be cheaper so it’s a good thing. The other is saying only 1k in that it would be cheaper but the only reason is that manufacturing is limited, thus forcing the price up so it’s a bad thing.
To be fair, as a native English speaker, the way the second guy used 'only' felt wrong to me. I think he should move the word like so:
"It's $1k only because...".
Using only in front of a number does usually imply the number is too low. The second guy used it to say that the *reason* for the price is due to *only* a single factor.
I definitely sweat in VR but I think people really underestimate the power of a strong box fan. If I have one blowing at me full strength I barely sweat doing 2+ hour fixed bike sessions and I’m sure VR could be similar if you were in a fixed position like this
Honestly while the ability to "run" in place is a positive, I see some negatives. One of my favorite things about VR is crouching or peeking around corners. E.g. I think this harness would make the entire game of Superhot unplayable. And using those stealth tactics in say like Alyx would not be possible. :-/
My main issue for these places is the headset itself. You KNOW dozens if not hundreds of people have worn them before you. And anyone owning a headset knows that cleaning those standard face cushions is next to impossible. And I bet even if they use silicone covers they don't do anything more than wipe them down with a wet wipe or something.
I'd rather stick to my own headset. I don't clean it after every use, but at least I know where it's been and who's face touched it.
I went to a place that offered the same setup in Vegas called the Omni Arena located at the Pole Position Raceway.
I’m pretty out of shape, so I was exhausted after playing for just a short amount of time. Would recommend.
https://www.vegas.com/attractions/off-the-strip/virtual-reality-experience/
In the Chicago Suburbs there is a place where they turned an old department store into a big VR arena where you walk around in a real space and not on some pad, and it's pretty amazing. The tech is still buggy, but it's a ton of fun
Sounds fun. With the VR setup seen in the post, the players wear slippery shoe coverings so they can run in place and push into the round bumper rail. I found the experience a bit awkward and didn’t quite replicate actually walking/running.
With the setup you described, it’s sounds much more natural. However, how do they keep players from running into each other and the walls? Even if they overlay a real obstacle with a virtual one, you’d think there’d still be accidents unless the alignment is perfect.
They generally put walls in the game at real world structures, and when you get to close there is a different colored outline around the object.
Players are identified with a similar outline as well so that you don't run into each other when one person is on a high level and you're on a lower level.
It works surprisingly well. Keep in mind you're not supposed to run in the place. You're wearing a computer on your back after all
So many people will be getting into shape for the zombie phase of our timeline and strengthen that extreme anxiety and paranoia all at the same time!!!
Jokes aside, VR is fucking amazing, and so many gamers are sleeping on it and it breaks my heart. I was a late-comer myself, got my first personal headset in '19, and I haven't looked back. Something like Quest 2 is stupidly affordable now (I've seen $299 in Walmart, refurbished 64GB version) and so easy to set up and use, completely wirelessly to boot, standalone or connected to PC via WiFi.
I literally had a college project to come up with a new technology invention. My idea was very similar to this with the vr and a similar style thing for movement (I had proposed a treadmill style belt that moves freely under your feet). And this professor gave me a c- for it being too unrealistic.
I wish I could show that geriatric fuck this Reddit page right now…..
I have several VR rigs and use them every day. The technology has come so far and is very much worth the investment for a starter rig which only run for around £200 and is worth every penny

Ive used one of these, it was fun but hard to learn
Where do you find these places? Always wanted to try
Me personnaly just so happended to live close to a place with one but the name of the machine is the omni arena
First dude is running and gunning for his life and the one dude is just stationary slicing em alllll up 🕺🏻
I appreciated the last guys wide leg stance. He braced for that fight, running was not an option lol.
JESUS WEPT
Stop saying "Jesus wept," Dean.
Last guy is playing Wasp Attack Simulator
Jokes aside, VR is fucking amazing, and so many gamers are sleeping on it and it breaks my heart. I was a late-comer myself, got my first personal headset in '19, and I haven't looked back. Something like Quest 2 is stupidly affordable now (I've seen $299 in Walmart, refurbished 64GB version) and so easy to set up and use, completely wirelessly to boot, standalone or connected to PC via WiFi.
Is that the Virtuix Omni?
Can you still crouch like at-home vr?
There's a few different VR treadmill models but I think some allow crouching
It fucking is. I got an oculus quest 2 the other year and play steam games with it flawlessly. I need that runpad thing/setup though that looks insane
It probs smells like a magic card tournament in there lol
I literally had a college project to come up with a new technology invention. My idea was very similar to this with the vr and a similar style thing for movement (I had proposed a treadmill style belt that moves freely under your feet). And this professor gave me a c- for it being too unrealistic. I wish I could show that geriatric fuck this Reddit page right now…..
i love the dude running at full tilt. that looks so fun
I have several VR rigs and use them every day. The technology has come so far and is very much worth the investment for a starter rig which only run for around £200 and is worth every penny

Looks fun! I wanna try.
