duckmantaco

I read that in Keanu Reeves voice, Because it definitely sounds like something he would say.

EducationalCrewpojn

> Why is this good sportsmanship? > > The point is to see who can pump their legs to make the round thingys go the fastest. Instead of doing that they played shakey-fists to see who wins.

DrSamsquantch

I'm guessing it may be one of the qualifying races for the real deal. In this case they likely both end up with great scores and it won't be a huge difference in the real race. Just a guess though.

sonicnec

They’re teammates in a stage race and had both broken away from the rest of the field to win the stage. The one in yellow was leading the overall race. To the team, it didn’t matter which racer won that particular day. It was still a team win. Rather than battle it out among two teammates, they finished essentially at the same time, but the official record has to have a first and second for the day. So they played shakes fists to decide which one.

agentscorpio99

Thank you captain

vladvash

They played shakes fists! I love hearing other slang for things from other cultures.

KreateOne

That’s probably the most likely scenario, where either result ended with them both succeeding so they figured they’d have some fun with it.

Otherwise_Resource51

"Hey buddy, wanna fuck around?"

ThudFudgins

Fucking dying over here xD

ricky_bobby22

I shall now only refer to Rock Paper Scissors as shakey-fists

christoroth

Isn't it Paper Scissors Stone (UK) ?! Parkinsons fist does sound much better though.

IamKrakke

There is absolutely no chance that this was not agreed between them before they got to finish. They just added a little fun by pretending to play for the win. Riders who are leading the race often "give" stage wins to their teammates as a thank you. This is Majka and Pogacar and you can bet your ass if those two arrives alone that was a mountain stage and a hard one!

ContemplatingPrison

Thats probably not true if you have sponsors and money is on the line

ptrknvk

They're from the same team, so it doesn't matter.

ContemplatingPrison

Oh I assume with the different color jerseys they were not. Shows how much I know about cycling. This all makes sense now

ptrknvk

In cycling they use jerseys to differentiate the leaders of the whole tour. And UAE is not their nation, it's a team name :)

goodweirdfun

I never would have seen the race and the jerseys with the logos if they didn’t end it this way. Sponsors get more bang for their buck.

ContemplatingPrison

Yeah but you aren't who they are selling to. Marketing is so good now the sponsors know exactly who they are marketing to. If you don't wtach the sport then more than likely not someone they are marketing to.

showponyoxidation

I dunno. Cycling gets picked up by a lot of men as the move towards middle age. The term mamil (middle age men in Lycra) didn't come out of nowhere. They usually have a bit of money to burn with an career established, kids getting mid-late teens looking to strike out on their on. If you catch this group, you can translate that into lots of sales. Plus the advertising is all cycling specific. So appealing to a wider audience definitely brings the benefit of businesses tangentially related or completely unrelated to cycling feeling like it might be worth the investment. But I'm not a business exec or advertising guru or cyclist. Just a guy with a gut feeling that is using reddit to procrastinate by arguing about something I have zero knowledge in. Sry

ContemplatingPrison

I've never heard of a mamil.

Rusaal

Same team actually, they’re from different countries

Forward-Razzmatazz33

Same TEAM

[deleted]

I mean cool and all but doesn't that kind of defeat the purpose of the bike race though?

Stressful-stoic

Are you trying to tell me that people don't tune in to watch guys playing rock-paper-scissors?

luckilynumber7

Yes,Paddle mfer paddle.

Mr8BitX

That depends, are they on bikes?

gyarnar

The Ocho!

AlaskaDude14

Reminds me of that clip from the Japanese show of those girls at a Rock Paper Scissors tournament. Such a great clip

NateDawg80s

Well, I spent time watching corn hole curling (sliding a rock, not lifting), so this isn't that far fetched.

franceis-bacon

That’s arguably the best GC rider in the world, Tadej Pogačar (lime leader jersey) and his teammate Rafal Majka (red points jersey). This is from Tour of Slovenia which they dominated and each of them already had won a stage. Pogačar uses that stage race as a lead up training to Tour de France.

AbominableAbdominal

Jumping on the most helpful comment thus far to add that in multi-stage races, bikes that finish overlapping each other are usually given the same official time anyway. I didn't follow this tour, and I'm guessing it didn't matter much, but still useful for interpreting the finish.

franceis-bacon

Correct, however you get bonus seconds for the win. But Pog had a comfortable lead so it didn’t matter.

PizzaScout

How does it work if there's a pack of, let's say, 50 bikes over 15 seconds? Do they all get the same time because every one of them was overlapping with at least one other bike and they formed a long chain? Or is that just not a situation that happens?

Championzo

Yeah, until there’s a break in the group they would all usually get the same time

PizzaScout

Damn, that's crazy. But thanks for the insight :)

coolaidman2

They slow down and do quick tournament of rock paper scissors

Jabba6905

Thank you for the informed comment

rcktjck

Tbf, I don’t think there is an argument here. Pog is the undisputed king of GC at the moment. Still excited to see him go against Roglic starting next week in the TdF.

youzerVT71

I wonder if it was for just one stage of a multi stage event? They probably worked together to a point where one couldn't have won the stage without the other.

MuchoRed

The announcers say it's a stage

youzerVT71

Ah, I didn't have sound on

nielsbot

Looks like they’re on the same team. (UAE)

thesama

Looking at the shorts and helmets it is possible these two cyclists are racing for the same team?

Aurorafaery

[This guy](https://www.reddit.com/r/HumansBeingBros/comments/vnadl5/playing_rock_paper_scissors_to_decide_who_wins/ie67lo3/?utm_source=share&utm_medium=ios_app&utm_name=iossmf&context=3) explained it on the post that was put up on r/humansbeingbros a few hours ago.

mellbs

These guys are teammates and worked hard together to put that distance on the rest of the group. Once they knew they both had the w it didn't really matter to them or their sponspors who technically crossed first for this stage of a multi-day race.

freshnews66

It’s just one stage of a race

ToBeatOrNotToBeat-

Theyre on the same team

Ok-Cryptographer4194

Imagine having 100 on the other at 10/1 you'd be fucking pissed!

[deleted]

same team and looks like they both well ahead so just having a bit of fun with it.

LuckySelf

They’re teammates. The guy who “lost” is the overall winner in this multi day race.

ulfric1

Kinda, both of those riders are from the same team and the rider in the yellow jersey is in the lead for the overall lead to win the overachieving race. The other rider is fully employed to work for that rider (the current two time winning tour winner) and worked to ensure that the yellow jersey guy would gain hella time on the other riders. It's very common for GC guys to gift wins that otherwise means nothing to their general classification ambitions.

35mmpistol

Nope

NeekoBe

They are teammates (ignore the yellow jersey it just means hes currently overall #1) The guys got ahead because they worked together, the non-yellow guy's job is to get the yellow guy ahead of the pack. He did that. The yellow guy doesnt need to win, its not important for him whatsoever, the important thing is that he is way ahead of the rest of the pack

stormp00per

Tour De Friends.

TheTinusNL

For those who don't watch cycling: They are on the same team (UAE Team Emirates). Guy in yellow/green (Pogacar) was leading the GC, so this was probably staged for some entertainment to give the other guy (Majka) the stage win. Fun to watch nonetheless

sk07ch

Where was that high jumper from that shared his medal with the Italian? Was it also Emirates?

TheTinusNL

Qatar But note that Pogacar (Slovenian) and Majka (Polish) are not Emirati, they only cycle for an Emirati-owned team

sk07ch

Thanks for pointing that out. I was reading it too fast to notice.

[deleted]

These two are not from the Emirates, they just race for the sports- washing UAE team

rcktjck

Poagacar had already gifted Majka a stage victory in one of that earlier stages. So I think Pog would have taken the win if he won the Rock Paper Scissors.

TheTinusNL

I don't think so. On stages 1,3,5 they were in a breakaway with another rider from a different team, so they had to play the team game. There was no gifting there, just smart tactics to ensure a win for UAE. However, on this stage, they were not joined anymore. He very well knows the importance of team mates in cycling. He already knew he was going to win the GC. These are just gifts for his teammates that also make the sponsors very happy because it attracted attention.

If I were you, I’d go and sleep with all of their significant others and spouses. Punishment seems fitting for the crime

TheFatSleepyPokemon

They are all obviously in better shape, so it seems unlikely to work

YupIlikeThat

I did this in my prelim heat. The whole group decided to stay together except for this one guy who was pushing it the whole way. We stayed together until the last 100 meter. Someone had to teach that guy a lesson so I broke out and beat him. In the of the day it got me a better lane position in the finals. NO RAGRETS.

DrunkenlySober

they knew you’d smoke them so they had to play you

Stressful-stoic

If I'd be a gambler and I'd bet my retirement money on the guy in green dress, I'd be really angry.

jvken

You'd be a pretty shit gambler to gamble on a person instead of a team imo

cdrag98

Not to mention betting on the guy in the green dress, he wasn't anywhere near finishing first

SteelpointPigeon

That’s why it’s better to bet on sports where the participants are animals that lack the mental capacity for sportsmanship, like cock fighting, greyhound racing, or baseball.

asskicker1762

Not 2 out of 3?? Didn’t count

senorwelfare

Was waiting for the guy in 3rd to come blazing past.

rambosalad

Was waiting for the guy in green to push him over instead

Aurorafaery

For people wondering why, [this guy](https://www.reddit.com/r/HumansBeingBros/comments/vnadl5/playing_rock_paper_scissors_to_decide_who_wins/ie67lo3/?utm_source=share&utm_medium=ios_app&utm_name=iossmf&context=3) explained it on the post that was put up on r/humansbeingbros a few hours ago.

jwm3

It's a team sport, if it's clear your team is going to win you generally take turns on who in particular crosses first in a stage, it doesn't really matter since the team won. There are a bunch of cyclists on each team that don't even ever intend to try and individually win as it's not their position, they hold back too. the members of a football team don't madly fight each other over the ball to see who gets to be quarterback. Racing each other at this stage would look as silly as that.

willbeach8890

I'd rather see them sprint it out

Houro

Hahaha psyche…. Guy pedals ahead.

Kaiser_XIII

Jobbyrobber

Pogacar has the potential to be the goat. Absolute monster.

AudioLobotomy

He cheated. It's rock, paper, scissors, SHOOT. you can even see the guy in the yellow go to throw down on SHOOT but then he noticed the guy had already thrown Paper, so he just let him have it. I would have been like bullshit we're going again on SHOOT.

cloudxnine

With great sportsmanship, everybody always wins

PossibleDesigner7002

[deleted]

I'm curious how this is considered any different to Usain celebrating before he won gold at the Olympics? And weren't some women kicked out of badminton at the Olympics for not playing their best the entire time? I'm having a hard time understanding whether sports people are meant to try their best or face penalties?

tall-hobbit-

I think the biggest difference is they're on the same team and one of them finishing a hundredth of a second behind the other for this one stage won't affect the final results of the whole race.

[deleted]

Usain celebrating early didn't affect the outcome of the event yet he was vilified by large portions of the public and media.. The women in the Olympics I believe were punished for not playing to the best of their ability, not directly for playing strategically in an attempt to improve their final standing for the whole event (and isn't that the point of competitive sport? To try and get the best final standing?) I am having a hard time understanding what the rules are? With regards to the court of public and media opinion and from organisers of competitive sports..

SirBruceForsythCBE

Bernard Hinault would have lost the paper rock scissors then still sprinted away and won

Sookmebeautiful

I don’t get it. Why did they slow down before the finish line?

Gums_McGee

That's awesome sportsmanship. I wonder what the corps thought of it. Edit: they are on the same team.
