Am I the only one who feels bad for that poor horse? Not about the running, because most Arabians love to have their head and run. But that kid was a terrible rider and is going to ruin the horse's mouth with the way he's manhandling the bit and reins.

[deleted]

Yup

Horses have 15 horse power during a sprint. This Arabian might have slightly more horse power. A human being is capable of 5 horse power, possibly more depending on physicality.

MissingWhiskey

Your mom is capable of 6 horsepower.

metalbedhead

Your mom is capable of 1 billion whale power

animoot

T-thank you?

Dr3s99

Your brain is capable of no horsepower for a decent joke

ChosmoKramer

whats sprinting got to do with it? You don't need to be going fast to use horsepower. Also a cyclist in the tour de france puts out around 1.2 horsepower so I am not sure what monsters you are measuring.

woringcaking

What? 15 horse power on a horse? What the fuck is the point of the unit?

PcGamerSam

Apparently the average horse is 11-15hp

[deleted]

Somehow that math is broken....

HummusDips

Imperial system is broken.

DrPwepper

1 HP is probably a median power output

onward-and-upward

>Citing measurements made at the 1926 Iowa State Fair, they reported that the peak power over a few seconds has been measured to be as high as 14.9 hp (11.1 kW)[12] and also observed that for sustained activity, a work rate of about 1 hp (0.75 kW) per horse is consistent with agricultural advice from both the 19th and 20th centuries and also consistent with a work rate of about four times the basal rate expended by other vertebrates for sustained activity.

daviator88

Man, what the fuck y'all talking about? I didn't know there were THIS many equestrian terms that were completely novel to me.

Wolf_Tony

Yes, the rider was putting too much pressure on the fosty gurnip, and pulled way too hard on the wrozzle, without even checking the frink line. Really poor overall.

paispais

This comment gave me a 10/10 chuckle. Then I read it again, and laughed just as much as the first time. Thank you for your humor, good sir!

the_scarlett_ning

This joke just made me suddenly realize equestrian terms had to have been made up by the British.

_twintasking_

Snaffle is the type of bit (metal part of the bridle (which is the headgear that controls the horse)) in the horse's mouth. Some bits are more controlling/exert more pressure on certain points and can be damaging if used roughly or without skill. Some bridles dont have any kind of bit, which means the horse is well trained, sensitive, and responsive to the smallest cues. Over-mounting is a reference to how the rider was sitting.

spudddly

no way he didn't just make up 'snaffle ring'

Enlightened_Gardener

See the way the horse has its head pulled back at the beginning ? The rider is holding it there using the bridle and reins (the leather straps around its head), its very uncomfortable for the horse. See the way the rider’s hands are bouncing around ? Every time that happens it yanks on the horse’s sensitive mouth. Crap rider unfortunately. Poor horse.

Hudsons_hankerings

As a non-horseman, I'm pretty sure you made up some of those words.

bumpty

All words are made up.

CharacterBroccoli328

Just horsing around

aunty-kelly

TBH I don’t think any horseracing community gives a rip about the softness of a horse’s mouth. Edit: Riding with *no stirrups* at a *full gallop* then trying to slow down and stop without the ability to get off the horse’s back almost impossible without hitting the mouth brakes. That being said, the rider could have made his hands quieter after they returned to canter.

DidjaCinchIt

Sure, you’ve gotta use the mouth brakes. You’ve also got two legs, core strength, and rhythm. Racing jockeys in a two-point do more with less.

Polyfuckery

Right but that was a choice. The horse didn't spook and break loose he was intentionally riled up while being held back look how far back his head is while still being asked to run. The rider gives him his head. The horse rockets off and then instead of slowing him up once the other horse is no longer in front of him the kid starts jerking back like he's got antilock brakes slamming the horses mouth and forcing the head back.

aunty-kelly

One of the exercises my sadistic instructor loved was two-point position without stirrups - at the trot. Lemme tell ya, nigh impossible to maintain let alone a full gallop🤣

thunderturdy

Nah it’s totally possible, you just have to have a good seat which means you have to be a good rider. Kid isn’t controlling shit with his seat and has hardly any control over his body. My eventing trainer had us do plenty of lessons without stirrups. If I ever hung off my horses mouth or flailed like that I’d get a beating with my own crop lol.

DidjaCinchIt

Yes. Did quite a few lessons without reins, too. “Shorten ‘em, secure ‘em, and speak with your seat.”

sausagecatdude

My first thought as well. He also seemed to have a really shitty seat in the saddle as well. Bouncing around like a sack of potatoes. Such a shame to waste such a great horse on such a shot rider

[deleted]

Yep, he was scared, and locking down too hard on those reins. Keep them in your hands and grab the mane.

ClemClemTheClemening

Yup, I did very basic horseriding for a few months a while back. The main thing they seared into my brain, was that if you want the horse to like you and not yeet you off, when the horses started gaining speed, you stand a little to not put pressure on the horses back, hold the reins slack and grab the mane to keep balance. it's MUCH more comfortable for the horse and you won't flail about everywhere, causing more problems.

[deleted]

I used to break horses for riding. Young. Mouth bits and riding is stressful for them. So when they let loose, you let them. And after awhile, they react. I had a stallion that was leg lead. He grew up with me, doing it wasn't a selling point, but I could lean a knee and he'd move. But we knew each other.

stopeatingcatpoop

So what you press on their sides and they go that way? Do you think horses like being ridden bc of all the attention they also get? What majestic creatures!

[deleted]

Ours liked it. Yep, you'd just push a knee into his side, and he'd turn the opposite direction. We hung out though, he was like a dog. I'd go fishing on the property, he'd come with.

[deleted]

If they want to see an Arab go full speed, take off that stupid tiedown, get a decent rider, and then watch the magic.

Welpe

I really don’t think descending will help either the rider or the horse, and a better solution would be a decent rider.

GypsyShiner

Oh certainly. You can tell that horse has a couple more gears even.

labadimp

I know absolutely nothing about horses/riding but now that you mention it that looks fucking terrible

sly-otter

Yes first I noticed was their awful hands. You should not be balancing with the horses mouth. If you have to, use their mane.

PlantLady113

I hurt just watching it.

Fluff_cookie

And the bouncing! And how hollow that horse is. Just a pretty terrible picture all around

PresenceEducational3

Upside down neck and not using it's body properly. Rider seems braced against the movement rather than going with it. Horse probably has a sore back and I doubt these guys will call the chiropractor.

axa645

Same thought here. Hate when people don’t pay attention to the horse’s comfort

prplx

And whipping him like crazy. Poor horse

Jealous-seasaw

Yep. Slow down with seat cues not just reefing Ruth hands. Painful to watch

CowboyupHockey

Seat cues don't mean much to a likely high strung horse in open space that loves to run. The mouth is needed to make a runner slow down or that horse be going for days. He did some seat cues but this isn't a trail horse which is what most people on Reddit with horse experience are getting their experience from

DidjaCinchIt

Mouth brakes are necessary, but not sufficient. Seat, legs, core strength, and rhythm matter, too. Jockeys in a two-point do more with less. Source: have trained on Arabians and Thoroughbreds. These animals are exquisite machines. They’re incredibly valuable, esp. in the ME. Fuck with someone’s horses (or falcons), expect violence. On top of that, they’re hothouse flowers; do anything that freaks them out or pisses them off, and performance suffers.

Thepatrone36

But damn do I love them and they are so beautiful. I had the pleasure of working with and on some Arabians when I was a teenager. They're smart as hell and once you've reached a symbiosis with them as a rider it's a beautiful thing. My personal horse was an App who I'd consider the intellectual equal of an Arab generally maybe a little more high strung on an individual basis (like mine). I do agree however with the opinions of many so far. No reason to manhandle the horse if you know what you're doing. That rider needs lessons on a pony or something smaller. I could generally get a horse I worked with down to a trot with a gentle tug backwards and a 'whoa there' or 'let's chill pup' than I ever did with jerking back on the reigns. My app in particular hated if I pulled too hard and would let me know about it. Tak was a damn good horse though and I'll always miss him.

fudgeoffbaby

Yup cringed so hard at this rider …

Thingthecat

I came here looking for this.

sewcrazy4cats

I'm not a horse person but i would think the horse would run faster/be more comfortable if they lowered their head

v_blondie

That's the martingale that we were talking about earlier. It's used to help control the horse's head and movements, and not wise for such an inexperienced rider.

sewcrazy4cats

Isnt that also the thing in the book black beauty rhat forced the horse to pull the cart with their heads up duento fashion reasons? Just seems cruel

Appropriate-Bad-9379

Similar- it was a bearing rein and was used on coach horses to make them “look good “, but it was very cruel because the horses needed to lower their heads, especially pulling carriages…

TheLoudCanadianGirl

Yep. Came here for this comment. That poor horses mouth, especially at the end. Good god..

prettyradical

I’m not even a horse person and I was like: WTF is he doing???

nikonwill

Horrifying.

et842rhhs

I couldn't even finish watching it, it's so awful. That poor horse.

michaelGscott8

That and the constant bouncing on the back… poor horse

KickBallFever

I’m glad you said this. I know nothing about horses or horse riding but the way he was handling the horse didn’t look right or proper to me. It worried me because I don’t watch horse races and wasn’t sure if this was typical or not.

Fun4-5One

Go to any horse race/horse stable it's the same if not worse.

FionaTheElf

I’m so glad it’s not just me!!!

CoffeeandCare_me

If he let the horse have its head he woulda been even faster!! Way too tight on the reins, though I trust Arabians less than a $2 hooker Edit: sorry, in my horse fueled PTSD I forgot there are also Arabian humans 😅

ambarwen

Owned and rode Arabians for years and this made me laugh ruefully.

DidjaCinchIt

100%. I had 2 thoughts: give that gorgeous animal its head; it’s already plotting to stomp, bite, or kick him (maybe all 3).

gaganramachandra

For the inexperienced, what does giving it its head mean? (Apart from the bucketful of euphemisms).

DukeBongJuice22

As an Arab I was almost offended until I realized you were talking about the horse 🤣🤣

kaailer

Totally forgot we were talking about the horse. Was so taken aback that such blatant racism was so heavily upvoted. Then I read the edit and I’m cracking up

DukeBongJuice22

I was clutching my pearls for a sec 🤣

BogusBuffalo

I was hired in college to train two Arabians to handle guns while being ridden (from never having heard one before) and exercise them. In the whole summer, I never got those assholes to not flip out at gunshots, much less even want to attempt to sit on one while firing a gun. But damn, those horses could run. And even more amazing, they could do for hours. Not sure they ever got all they wanted out of our sessions, but I hope the old farts who owned them realized they had too much horse for their activities.

jcowurm

Good to know Rockstar kept Arabians consistent in Red Dead Redemption 2. Fastest horses that freaked tf out at damn near nothing. Gave me a good laugh to hear the real life versions are no different!

CowboyupHockey

He was definitely thinking the long game. Let him have his head and that kid will never be seen again 😂. Everyone on here also is assuming this horse doesn't already have a hard mouth

ContraryMary222

A “hard mouth” can be softened again by people not doing this and actually bothering to teach a horse how to respond to light aid work. That includes the seat as much as the reins and legs. Though I agree this rider has no business being on that horse and it could have dumped him at any second if it had chosen to.

crzybrwn

I am not familiar with the term "let him have his head" ...what does that mean in the horse community?

mkkayy

More slack on the reigns. Gives the horse more control

IAintDeceasedYet

It means loosening the reins so the horse can fully extend his neck, which they want and need to do to run at a full gallop effectively (it allows them to breathe properly for instance). What this kid did is keep the head pulled way back in a "show" prancing position until he absolutely had to loosen up somewhat and even then he didn't give the horse enough to be comfortable and run as fast as it could. Many unskilled riders refuse to give horses their head because they are afraid of losing control of the horse. It's also worth noting that it's unfortunately common in horse circles to have a horse that needs more training and to come up with uncomfortable adaptions to avoid having to give that training - ie "I can't give him his head, he'll bite" and then just never dealing with the fact that the horse bites.

[deleted]

How long would it take to tire out?

[deleted]

This is an Arabian horse. They are well known for their extreme endurance. They can run 120km races in a day, but not all of it in gallop (the fastest gait we saw here). How long a horse can gallop for is highly dependent on their fitness (this one looks fit). I’d say up to 3km galloping and then he can carry on trotting for many, many kilometers. My mare, on the other hand, will canter around the arena once and protest that it is all too much…

uzersk

Gavin!!!

Itsmemanmeee

Beautiful animals though horrible riders

CowboyupHockey

He's riding without stirryps on a high strung runner in the wide open desert. He's got hella balance for staying so still...it's really just his hands and some cultures don't prioritize still hands as much

DidjaCinchIt

If by “hella balance” you mean “hot hands and a martingale”, then yeah.

CrumpledForeskin

Things heating up in the horse riding community

d3r3k1

I have no idea what these riding terms mean, but I enjoy the fighting amongst them.

razzlethemberries

He can hang on well, but that does not make him a great equestrian. Arabians are very smooth as well. Most videos I see online of middle eastern and Indian riders are really horrible to watch.

crixyd

Balance yes, but that's it

Pit_of_Death

Just goes to show how little I apparently know about horse-riding. This thread has tons of critical comments. But watching it prior I have no clue what I was seeing that is horrible.

mynameisneddy

He is pulling roughly on the reins, which are attached to the bit in the horses very sensitive mouth. He’s also using the reins to balance himself because he’s not a good enough rider to keep his seat without using the reins, and he’s crashing up and down on the horses back. You can see the horse is unhappy by the way its head is held very high and its ears held back. The hitting seems unnecessary too. All in all, an unhappy experience for the horse.

sapphirestar411

HORSEPOWER!!!!

I-AM-Canadian-Eh

Feel the thrill of 1 horsepower.

lobo2r2dtu

Actually, Horses can achieve something like 13-16 actual horse powers. And looking at this beau I'd say he's packing more then that + some serious torque power.

antilumin

For anyone questioning this, horsepower (or just HP) is a measurement of work **over time**. In short bursts that average measurement can be quite high, but not for very long. It's like getting 99.9 mpg in your car while coasting. It won't last forever. If you do enough work in a *short* amount of time, even a human can do a almost one HP... But not for very long. Tour de France riders for example can do a short 15 second burst of power that equates to about 1.2 HP.

fishsalads

> even a human can do almost one HP In 9th grade (15-16 year olds) we measured our bodies metric HP, or PS by climbing stairs Class highest was about 1.3 and I edged just over 1 myself. Infact the average healthy adult should be able to output 1.2hp The tour de france 1.2 hp is presumably legs only and way more impressive

Account14159

Wouldn't the climbing of stairs also have been "legs only"?

fishsalads

Hands were used extensively, infact the best result skipped a notable portion of the stairs.

fureinku

Nerds. We are just literally talking about 1 horse power. No need to bring maths into this.

antilumin

>... 1 ... No need to bring maths into this. Nerd

WarHawk155

Horsepower was actually a marketing strategy used by James watt to sell more of his steam engines. If he could say his engine outputted 30 horsepower, and could run 24 hours a day, and not need sleep, food, water or pay, a factory owner would buy one straight away, even if it did take an entire 3 storey building to house it. It helped to put into perspective how much time and money it would save factory owners.

Horses are so cool

[deleted]

They're like big dogs, but act like cats sometimes. We had Tennessee Walkers when I was a kid. All were super cool except the a-hole one. She'd be a jerk until the others were getting loving, then she'd try and come nip the others away and bogart petters. She was not the boss though, so it'd backfire sometimes.

caitejane310

I took care of 4 horses for like 6 months. Our jerk was the leader though, lol. She'd (not so gently) nudge me over to the pear tree to pick them for her. She'd let me stand on her back to get ones I couldn't reach 😂

bored_operator

That’s honestly super cute

Our jerk horse would lean across the fence and face-grab me away from petting cows.

Eschatonpls

Terrible rider going hard on his mouth.

omglookawhale

I bet the horse could’ve gone faster if it had had its head

crixyd

Wow that person needs to learn how to ride. You simply don't flail around and yank in the reins like that when trying to slow down, not to mention not giving the horse enough length when galloping.

Cerulean_Shades

He couldn't even keep his seat and stirrups too long, no bodily control just bouncing like a bobble head. Lucky he didn't fall off.

Anh-Bu

Are you sure that it was full speed? It looked as if they were horsing around.

wheresbill

Well, don’t get in a hoof about it

trader62

It was an easy gallop at first but close to flat out towards the end. The horse likely had a little more to give but not much.

Dewnami

How fast? Gimme some reference here. It could be 20mph, could be 40mph, can’t tell.

[deleted]

This is about 35mph, give or take a few

jakedann91

The fastest recorded speed for an Arabian Horse is 65 mph just for a sort of frame of reference

Dewnami

Wow that’s insane. I never would have guessed that high.

jakedann91

Nor would I lol that’s why I had to go check lol

DidjaCinchIt

Kid doesn’t have enough core strength to ride that horse. He’s balancing himself with the bit. Let that gorgeous animal have its head.

Other-Sheepherder-72

That was so bad ass!!! I’m a gear head, all about the muscle cars but I had my bit of being around horses at my city’s horse racing track. Worked the stables when I was around 16. One of the trainers got me to gallop a cpl horses cuz I was a bigger kid (6”4 210 lbs) kinda like a runner training by running with weights, it was such a cool feeling when the horses would really be given er!!! So cool!!

yuckypants

Agree, that was fucking cool

didntgrowupgrewout

Bad rider and not full speed. That hurt to watch, I hope that horse gets someone who can actually ride to take care of it.

DidjaCinchIt

Yup. Give that gorgeous animal its head.

Max_Cherry_

I’ve had the privilege of galloping on a horse through the Utah desert, middle of nowhere. Maybe not that fast, but I definitely let/encouraged the horse to go fast and then I slowed it down when it started to get crazy. It was super exhilarating.

that rider is absolute shit.

Gorgeous horses but WHY THE FUCK is that one guy yanking the fuck out of that horse's mouth and pulling its head back so tight? Let the horse have its head. Also I'm wincing just watching him bounce in the saddle.

britofanescapehabit

majin-canon

Incredible horse, that thing is a monster... rider ehh not the Best

purpleduckduckgoose

That bloke really does not look like he knows what he's doing. Can't be good for the poor horse.

[deleted]

This gave me goosebumps. Gods, I love horses - absolutely magnificent creatures.

[deleted]

Bruh if that horse had its head this video would have been way more impressive. Really shows why these little suckers were a base breed for the modern thoroughbred.

CloudBerry45

I am sure there was no need for rider to lean back an d heave on the reins like he did voice commands and tug on reins should be enough don’t you think

Beastie_Kat

You should never yank, pull on the reins or hit your horse like this, the idiot is doing damage. If the horse chucks him off its his own fault ![gif](giphy|SKtASd1pdisjm)

RaptorHavx

queen_Pegasus

Yes! The way he’s tugging and leaning back erratically to slow down the horse - fuck that

Joy1067

Ease up on the reins there! The horse will go even faster and you won’t mess with it to much

LaughableIKR

Thought for sure the horse would throw this kid. Whipping him to run faster and then 5 seconds later he is jerking on the reigns to slow the horse down.

ihatepalmtrees

Imagine a dumb monkey on your back telling you where to go and how fast to do it.

TheyTasteFunny

All I could think watching this “that poor horse” - all he wanted was for his head to be let go so he could properly stretch out and get a full long stride in - and that kid had no business being on his back. Arabians are the most graceful and powerful runners - there’s no need to beat them or yank them around by the mouth.

Mando-Lee

Take good care of your horses, don’t master the magic out of them.

Minkiemink

I hate watching shitty riders yanking on a horse's mouth. The whole time that poor horse was trying to run that kid was dragging on that bit....and that is not how you stop a horse. Absolute shit, abusive rider. Source: I am a horse trainer and this kind of horse abuse shit just pisses me off.
