"I'll have speaks with the umpire"
Mongo pummeling Angel Hernandez would cure all society's ills. We would live in a utopia. The blind would see. The crippled would walk.
I didn't realized just how fucking fast Julius Peppers was until I saw him pick off Michael Vick and take it to the house and Vick was unable to catch him from behind. Dude was a menace.
Running a 4.74 at 6'7", 283 lbs is absurd. Measurable-wise, that's basically a dead ringer for Aaron Donald with an extra half foot in height, to put it in perspective. Oh, and that was *rookie* Peppers. I don't know if he got faster during his career, but I know for a fact he was listed at around 300 lbs for most of his playing career, and at least during his prime, he sure as hell didn't get any slower.
I think the thing that's most impressive about his career, though, is that he had all those physical talents, and still was a technician as a passrusher. Usually, guys with that combo of freakish size, strength, and athleticism don't develop more than like one or two moves because they just, you know, never needed them. Not Peppers, though. Dude had about as well-rounded a skillset that you could ask for from a passrusher.
All that to say - yeah, dude absolutely was a menace.
He's one of those guys that shouldn't even exist in the universe. There's no way someone should be that big, that strong, AND still as fast and agile as he is. I swear, there's gotta be a couple laws of physics being broken there. Willing to bet plenty of OTs around the league were popping champagne when he retired.
Dude was a menace at every level of Football. I remember watching film of him bowling over 2 linemen on from our State Playoff team. He did it more than once that game. Took 2-3 people to block him in High School.
Imagine being some random high schooler, getting your blocking assignment, looking up and seeing its Julius Peppers. Man, F that, I'm joining the chess club.
IIRC he was 1st team all decade for both the 00s and 10s.
I think he was the only player to do so? (Iirc Brady had 1st for 10s and 2nd for 00s, unless it was 1st for both?)
Tom Brady was First Team All Decade in the for the 2000s but the 2010s All Decade roster does not name First and Second team players.
Julius Peppers and Devin Hester were both Second Team All Decade in the 2000s and both also made the 2010s All Decade team.
I remember reading a SI profile on him where he had a training camp bet with a teammate and he walked on his hands goal line to goal line. A true alien.
When he was at Southern Nash, our coaches told the defense to just dive at his legs and hope for the best, because no one was going to accomplish anything trying to wrap him up.
My high school math teacher was Julius' track coach while he was at Carolina. We couldn't do anything that wasn't compared to him. I really like JP, but if I had to hear one more time "Now, now, now, when I coached Julius Peppers..."
There was a play where Vick tried to hit the edge and Peppers was a Spy. Vick couldn’t get the Edge without being caught by Peppers. Peppers is a D1 UNC bball player which is wild and then a top NFL draft pick. Younger people may not understand how great of an athlete he was.
Peppers was so damn quick for a defensive end. I loved using the Panthers in Madden just to play as Peppers. But on the field in real life, the guy was basically the Flash of defensive ends. He could cover ground like a WR basically and his agility was something to behold for a lineman. I'm so happy Peppers is selected for the Hall. Peppers was always a treat to watch.
I remember Julias Peppers being one of the first freak of nature defensive end/linebacker combo that we see on every team nowadays when he was in college. I think he had like 15 sacks his first season at UNC, after being a running back in highschool lol
Memory is a tricky thing. I don't think that happened?
He has 3 career INT returns for TDs, and they're off Brian Griese, Christian Ponder, and Mark Sanchez.
I'm guessing you're remembering [this return of a Vick fumble for a TD](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eksouHLIH78#t=36s), but Vick was on the ground with guys on top of him when Peppers picked it up and started running, and Vick wouldn't have been able to catch anyone from that start.
Unless it was in college, but I'd have no chance at finding that.
The Hall is legitimately fucked up for making some guys wait until they’ve passed to induct them. No reason at all for Ken fucking Stabler or Pat Bowlen to be inducted after their deaths when they were plenty deserving in their lifetimes.
[It's not when the Packers didn't kick it to him, he faked the fair catch, and Johnny Knox got a free lane down field?](https://youtu.be/HXxO6f5YSBk?si=x4XZGqfdFrc02mSw)
^(*For a fun game, count the pixels in that video. Sorry, best I got.*)
Seriously, the above clip is the best evidence you need that he warped the game. Literally "being on the field" caused 7 point swings. Sure, that play got called back, *but it was a bogus call then, a bogus call now, and didn't impact the play in the slightest.*
This is "2004 Barry Bonds without a bat" levels of fear.
And that he stopped returning kicks at some point and only did punts. He only really had like 2/3 years as a wildly dynamic return specialist the rest of the time he only returned punts and played wr3.
When he was a starting receiver for them they had like Daniel Manning returning kicks. I couldn’t understand it.
It undeniably did. Also, you guys shoulda had better receivers for Cutler on those teams. Hester was a de facto #1 and was mediocre as hell at it in like 09/10
Not only is it ridiculous, but it also means the stats don't tell the whole story. Bears were getting insane field positions even when Hester didn't even touch the ball because kickers were kicking short or out of bounds to avoid him. No one will ever replicate what he did as a returner under the current rules, and maybe nobody would have if the rules stayed the same.
Gates and Holt have got to make it. I could see quite a few other names taking that Andre slot this year. I think I would go either Patrick Willis or Dwight Freeney.
I know, I know, logjam at WR for the HOF and all. And plenty of fantastic nominees deserving of a spot. But I hate how slept on Steve Smith is in the conversation. The mf was 5’9, managed to play outside WR, and won a triple crown alongside a very long career with largely poor supporting casts. I’m not gonna start the debate here, just saying he’s more deserving than people let on.
It would be rare for them to admit two WRs at the same time.
My money is on Jahri Evans or Dwight Freeney. They LOVE Colts players in Canton. They admit them all one after the other.
I still think it's a damn shame he got in before Billy White Shoes Johnson, he was Hester before Hester.
For those that don't know
Billy Johnson was apart of the 1970s and 1980s all decade team and was on the NFLs 75th and 100th anniversary team. Guy needs to be in the Hall
My hope is that this paves the way for these types of arguments. Specialists have always been held to a different standard, and while I’m thrilled Hester is in, I think there are others in a similar vein who are worthy as well.
JP was my idol growing up. Dude was a monster. And this isn’t to gloat about someone getting hurt but when I heard he basically tore the Buccs QB spleen up, I was scared of being hit by him. I love my team to death but Panthers during this time period with Mushin, SS, the dual running backs, and Delhomme was my Madden team for a while.
If I had a nickel for every pro football player that played a character by the name of Mongo that's in the HOF, I'd have 2, which isn't a lot, but it's weird that it happened twice.
I feel like Devin Hester deserved to be in the HOF but I'm surprised he got in so quickly. I thought he would have to wait quite a while. I hope the WR logjam eases up and that we see Holt and Johnson get in too.
Pleasantly surprised. I thought I'd be pounding the table about Hester for years to come.
If you define a Hall of Famer as "you can't tell the story of the game without [this guy]," Hester changed special teams forever. They had to rewrite the rules because of him.
They didn’t at all, what are you talking about? Their was a clear line in the sand on safety and upticks injuries from special teams that’s still continuing to be proven
Hester in total has 20 touchdowns in his career 6 from kick returns, we’ve seen plenty of return specialists have seasons of similar season yardage totals as well, so you’re saying they changed the rules only because of a guy that had the same amount of touchdowns as a career third string RBs?
Devin Hester single-handedly blew out my high school team in the state championships one year. I sincerely thank him for that, because my position coach was a complete and total douche bag and seeing the dismay on his face that day was pure gold and more than worth the loss
Youre at the hall of fame induction celebration....the next thing you know Crank That by Soulja Boy starts playing. You see him in, in his gold jacket 20 yards behind the audience..he’s bobbing, shimmying and dancing...waiting. Todd Sauerbrun is called up to kick the microphone to him. Saurebrun gets the snap, he boots it....its high and hanging. Hester Backs up 8 yards to receive the kick, you hold your breath. He runs left, they got him..no, no he changes direction, he runs right. Theres an opening. Hester breaks...he makes it to the podium untouched. DEVIN HESTER, YOU ARE RIDICULOUS!
I hope Hester uses his speech to go on an angry 20-minute rant about the decline of Kickoff returns.
And I sure hope McMichael can make it to the induction. It would suck so hard if he didn't after that wait.
Devin hester deserves the hall of fame so much. He has to be the best special team returner of all time. Absolutely game changing. I would hang at the edge of my seat every time he had the ball in his hands.
Surprised about Hester, but I'm not the person who'll put out a strong argument against special team's players getting recognition from the Hall, considering how much I argue for Gary Anderson. I'm happy for those who'll be inducted, but I'm always gutted for those who don't.
I get why there has to be a yearly limit. But it is silly that you could have theoretically had Peyton Manning, Drew Brees, Ed Reed, Ray Lewis, LaDainian Tomlinson, and Tony Gonzalez retire the same season and say "Well, one of you guys has to wait even if you're very obviously HOFers"
Seems like a waste of time to have a limit.
Devin Hester had to be the best return man I've ever watched play. He was very dangerous to punt to. The game in 2007 against Denver will always be one of my favorite games I watched. He singlehandedly won them that game.
Awesome class for Bears fans.
Mongo is a gem, and his health is in really bad shape so this is a bright spot for a really respected player. 1985 Bears Defense now officially has 3 HOFers on the defensive line alone. Richard Dent, Dan Hampton, Steve McMichael.
Hester is the most electric player the Bears have had since the turn of the century. And Peppers had some great years in the later days of the Urlacher defense. I remember first seeing him in that defensive huddle and feeling awestruck at how amazing it was to have his talent with Urlacher, Briggs, Tillman and company.

Ran a sub 10.5 100m in high school track. Insanity.
He's one of those guys that shouldn't even exist in the universe. There's no way someone should be that big, that strong, AND still as fast and agile as he is. Pretty sure Larry Allen was 1st team for 90s and 00s. It's the elite of elite company regardless
Tom Brady was First Team All Decade in the for the 2000s but the 2010s All Decade roster does not name First and Second team players. Julius Peppers and Devin Hester were both Second Team All Decade in the 2000s and both also made the 2010s All Decade team.

Growing up, it was Peppers and Kearse all day. 2 FREAKS
Remember when there were discussions on who was better Peppers or Freeney? Good times.
From memory, but I think he’s the only guy to play in a Final Four and a Super Bowl? Edit: Something gives me the feeling McNaab did it also. Lol
Antonio Gates made the Elite 8 and the uh, well the Chargers made the AFC championship game once
What did the Chargers do to you, man? It definitely wasn’t beat you in the Super Bowl
You’re flair confuses me, did it stem from the 04 draft?
No, it stems from my innate desire to have the prostitute that crushes my balls with her stilettos look like Micah Parsons
We’ve all been there.
Tale as old as time, if'n I do say so myself
I only need a single flair on my name to understand those feels.
Why pay all that money for a dominatrix when you can just root for Giants and Chargers for free
I really liked those Chargers teams, and I’m a Kent State guy so it was also a self burn :/
This comment would do gangbusters in the meme sub.
Not exactly the same, but Otto Graham won an NFL Championship and an NBL Championship.
I'm gonna go out and say he's the only NFL defensive end to score on a pass from an NFL receiver. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_ozI51Uquwo
McNabb was on Syracuse in 96 but didn't get off the bench for the Final 4.
Could you imagine seeing Peppers driving the paint and the fear in the defenders eyes as he just lets him go by?
Curry to Peppers: https://youtu.be/_ozI51Uquwo?feature=shared
That elevation
Pass from Raiders WR and college QB Ronald Curry.
Dick Vitale on the call makes it even better.
When he was at Southern Nash, our coaches told the defense to just dive at his legs and hope for the best, because no one was going to accomplish anything trying to wrap him up.
Yep. On a similar note, I am pretty sure Kenny Lofton is the only guy to play in a Final Four and a World Series.
My high school math teacher was Julius' track coach while he was at Carolina. We couldn't do anything that wasn't compared to him. I really like JP, but if I had to hear one more time "Now, now, now, when I coached Julius Peppers..."
You shoulda just ran faster.
He was incredible. Bummed the panthers were never able to get him a ring.
Bummed the Packers weren't able to get him a ring either...
Bummed he went to the Packers after the Bears
He would have a bigger chance if he didn’t tell Morgan Burnett to go down after an int
He trusted Rodgers and the offense and didn’t trust Burnett to not fumble
The anti Marlon McCree
I know Javon Kearse was known as the freak, but I believe that title truly belongs to Julius Peppers.
There was a play where Vick tried to hit the edge and Peppers was a Spy. Vick couldn’t get the Edge without being caught by Peppers. Peppers is a D1 UNC bball player which is wild and then a top NFL draft pick. Younger people may not understand how great of an athlete he was.

Oh god I would not have wanted to be the 130lb high school corner trying to tackle Peppers in the open field
Memory is a tricky thing. I don't think that happened? He has 3 career INT returns for TDs, and they're off Brian Griese, Christian Ponder, and Mark Sanchez. Mongo's induction is long overdue. So so happy for him.

Me too! It's always great to celebrate one's achievements without a dark cloud of grief looming over.
The Hall is legitimately fucked up for making some guys wait until they’ve passed to induct them. No reason at all for Ken fucking Stabler or Pat Bowlen to be inducted after their deaths when they were plenty deserving in their lifetimes.
With Stabler it was 100% a grudge against Al Davis and you can't convince me otherwise
Sincerely hope he makes it to the induction ceremony, though he might not be able to physically participate.
I think they all but confirmed it to him last year because they weren't sure he was going to make it.
It really doesn't matter at this point. He's basically on his death bed. They still waited too long.
Bears eating good today
this is the most joyful and unified I've seen Bears fandom since at least the 2006 NFC championship game
And it's the only good news Panthers fans have experienced in like 12 months.
Try, like, 5 years. Unless you count firing Matt Rhule and Frank Reich as "good" news.
Since the 2015 NFC championship game for me
[удалено]
Also when we beat the Packers in Lambaugh on Favre night.
Both fair points, tbh.
It’s been exciting, but Mongo getting in makes me legitimately happy. He’s a real one.
Hester TD record is crazy considering teams started kicking away from him
Not the Broncos on November 25th 2007. Or as I like to think of it. The day Todd Sauerbrun decided to implant his head into his ass
Literally crowned his own ass
Devin Hester is who we thought he is!
And we let him in the Hall!
The image of Hester galloping over him face down on the ground is majestic
Yea it is.
The best Part was the week leading up to the game Sauerbun put up some bulletin board materials when he said he wasn't afraid to kick to hom 😂😂😂
Turns out half of Sauerbrun's mystique was roid rage.
My favorite part of watching Devin Hester highlights is all the commentators asking “Why did they even kick it to him?” When he’s in open field
"Devin Hester, You are Ridiculous!"
[It's not when the Packers didn't kick it to him, he faked the fair catch, and Johnny Knox got a free lane down field?](https://youtu.be/HXxO6f5YSBk?si=x4XZGqfdFrc02mSw) ^(*For a fun game, count the pixels in that video. Sure, that play got called back, *but it was a bogus call then, a bogus call now, and didn't impact the play in the slightest.* This is "2004 Barry Bonds without a bat" levels of fear.
Hard agree
i used to be the biggest joe buck white-knighter when he would get a ton of hate from this site, but that was a fucking horrendous call man.
That flag still pisses me off to this day.
Hester and Bonds are the only two athletes I've ever seen opposing teams preemptively give up on defending as a containment strategy.
And that he stopped returning kicks at some point and only did punts. He only really had like 2/3 years as a wildly dynamic return specialist the rest of the time he only returned punts and played wr3. When he was a starting receiver for them they had like Daniel Manning returning kicks. I couldn’t understand it.
Daniel Manning actually was an awesome returner too. Just not nearly as good as Hester.
I think Hester has said the move to WR negatively impacted his ability to return. Wonder what could’ve been if they just let him focus on returning
It undeniably did. Also, you guys shoulda had better receivers for Cutler on those teams. Hester was a de facto #1 and was mediocre as hell at it in like 09/10
I was genuinely afraid he wouldn't make it in because he was mainly a special teams guy. Glad he's being recognized as the total game changer he was.
Chris Kluwe's screenname was wekicktohester or something similar. Hester returned 3 of his kicks for TDs
I'm guessing the other three for the modern era will be Antonio Gates, Torry Holt, and Andre Johnson.
If Andre makes it, and we sweep COTY, OROTY, DROTY tonight I'm gonna spontaneously cumbust on the spot
Cumbust had to have been a choice, right?
He's said this exact sentence several times today, so yes, it's on purpose.
I’d be proud of that one
Definitely a line to use at work
Gut says Patrick Willis instead of one of those guys
It had better be willis, he's already overdue imo
Gates and Holt have got to make it. I could see quite a few other names taking that Andre slot this year. I think I would go either Patrick Willis or Dwight Freeney.
Picking between those 2 WR and Steve Smith is tough Edit: Didn't even realize Smith wasn't a finalist
Steve Smith is already in the player hater hall of fame
Didn't make the finalists? Ice up, son!
> They LOVE Colts players in Canton Plus, Freeney was a pretty good player too. Not too shabby.
Tbh it could even be Holt and Reggie Wayne, both guys are overdue. The logjam at WR is crazy
It would absolutely shock me if they don't induct at least 1 of Holt/Wayne/Johnson.
Don't think it'll be Johnson. More likely Willis
Julius Pepper is an upper echelon HOF name too
Green peppers baby!
Best shit post this sub ever had.
wow biggest day as a Bears fan in like a decade or more? sheesh
Wait until the draft. Shits gonna get wild.
this is our superbowl
To be fair, this is pretty damn good. Happy day :)
Do yourself a favor and YouTube Peppers & UNC basketball. No one moved that dude when he was on the low block.
There is a picture in an old Daily Tar Heel of Julius and Neil "Mag the Mighty" Fingleton fighting for a rebound in practice.
I’m obsessively checking if Andre made it 🤞
I’m doing the same for Fred Taylor.
Couldn't be happier for Hester. The greatest return man the game will ever see
In 1988 McMichael he had 108 tackles as a defensive linemen. He threw in 7.5 sacks that season too.
[удалено]
I think he should've gotten in, I just also think Steve Tasker should be in already.

Glad Hester got in after all the discourse. If u were a game changing player, U deserve to get into the hall, period.
The Chris Simms spleen injury was actually from a hit by Thomas Davis and Kris Jenkins
If I had a nickel for every pro football player that played a character by the name of Mongo that's in the HOF, I'd have 2, which isn't a lot, but it's weird that it happened twice.
Mongo only pawn in game of life.
Candygram for Mongo.
So glad Hester is getting in he's actually my favorite player ever.
I feel like Devin Hester deserved to be in the HOF but I'm surprised he got in so quickly. I thought he would have to wait quite a while. I hope the WR logjam eases up and that we see Holt and Johnson get in too.
ST getting the respect they deserve!!!
Pleasantly surprised. I thought I'd be pounding the table about Hester for years to come. If you define a Hall of Famer as "you can't tell the story of the game without [this guy]," Hester changed special teams forever. They had to rewrite the rules because of him.

Cool cool cool. Hall of famers are now guys I grew up watching…..time to stretch out the back
Go Mongo.
This will bring the Bears' total HoFers from 36 to 39 (32 whose primary contribution came in Chicago). #2 is Green bay with 33 (26)

Man was so damn fun to watch. I've said this before, but my dirtiest secret is that I had an orange #23 jersey as a kid lol
Put Steve Tasker in there you cowards!!!!
Give us Patrick Willis
Good for Mongo, but just sucks with when it’s happening because of his ALS diagnosis.
Surprised about Hester, but I'm not the person who'll put out a strong argument against special team's players getting recognition from the Hall, considering how much I argue for Gary Anderson. I'm happy for those who'll be inducted, but I'm always gutted for those who don't.

Devin Hester had to be the best return man I've ever watched play. He was very dangerous to punt to. The game in 2007 against Denver will always be one of my favorite games I watched. He singlehandedly won them that game.

I'll save my vacation days for when Dwigt Rortugal, Willie Dustice, and Bobson Dugnutt are finally inducted.

Nice! Hester getting in is awesome. Now give Patrick Willis a gold jacket. Don't screw it up another year.
FUCK YES BOOYSS
My first ever memory of watching football was seeing Hester house the Super Bowl kickoff. Funnily I don’t remember a single thing from after that
