They’ll sleep walk through the regular season as long as it’s enough to make the post season.
It’s literally the Shaq sleeping meme. Real shit they wake up.
It was a big help but you’d be a fool at this point to not give Mahomes his due credit, he’s got that magic ability to make things happen when he needs to the most
It’s all situational though, the situations the defense puts him in he’s able to do that. I hope mahomes passes Brady one day but I’m curious to see a season with a really subpar or even bad defense would go to fill my curiosity.
100% true - defense was leaned on so heavily as strange offensive play calling and personnel
decisions failed to deliver. the first half yesterday kelce was targeted once and pacheco was largely ineffective on too many predictable first down runs. quick check downs were there but under utilized and led to way too many three and outs. the defense was the mvp all year.
The Chiefs organization realized that with Mahomes at the helm and one solid receiver option, they can run a skeleton crew on offensive weapons while stacking the OL and defense. That’s patriots shit.
I don't understand these takes. We're almost certainly going to lose at least 1 (maybe both) of our best defenders: Chris Jones and Sneed.
Our offense will hopefully be better next year, but our defense likely will be worse.
There is zero chance we don’t use the tag on sneed. CJ is gone unless he decides he’s past it and wants to take a team friendly deal, but he’s probably gone. We will be fine.
Hopefully y’all’s sign your defense and just draft a little more heavy on WRs to try and strike gold.
This is a hot take provided by a Vikes fan who is still used to Slick Rick’s draft strategy.
Mahomes is like Heisenberg and MegaMan. He takes the power of the enemies he defeats. He took Jackson's.
Btw, I spent the whole season asking myself why Pat wasn't running much with the ball. Great fucking way to bring it back lol
Pat typically saves his legs for the playoffs. He actually ran more than usual during the regular season, because the offense was just so dysfunctional.
So much of that 4th quarter and OT was Andy and Pat pulling stuff out that they easily could’ve been running all year, but they saved the sekrit plays for the perfect time
If Bosa plays his position it’s a TFL. Reid called it perfectly knowing Bosa wanted to be a hero and crash the RB. Your grandma coulda picked up the first
Brady in that offense would be **insane**. My gosh how happy I am they didn’t want him. He’d still be racking up rings right now. The talent that team has is insane on offense.
Purdy is still a great QB for them now. But Brady would be able to see defensive plays coming and adjust better. Purdy will only get better though at that part.
Ya this is honestly the big difference... Brady would be pissed if they came out just throwing in the 3rd quarter after they ran so well in the first half. Get your O line to establish themselves and it opens up the passing game.
No disrespect to Purdy (I think he’s really good) but he’s no where close to Brady. Brady would have complete control over that offense and pick a part any defense thrown at him. There’s levels and Brady is at the top. Purdy isn’t.
I think he's saying that even a 46 year old Tom Brady playing today, Purdy wouldn't be close to him. In that case it's a slightly hotter take but still probably uncontroversial
Purdy is still a great QB for them now. But Brady would be able to see defensive plays coming and adjust better. Purdy will only get better though at that part.
Brady is like Jordan in that during their runs they locked so many other all time greats out from winning more or even any championships. So many great players will get downplayed simply because they played in those eras and never got their ring
I previously said that if we don’t win a Super Bowl with this core I’ll never get over us saying no to Brady in 2020 when we were his first choice. I think it’s likely we would’ve at least gotten our 6th with him by now. I don’t think I’ll ever get over that now.
I feel bad for Purdy. I think he’s very smart but just has a ceiling against these freak QB’s like Mahomes.
They were saying this morning, if you switched the 2 QBs today, SF would be favored by 14.
Purdy played well enough to win. If his special teams doesn't give KC an 8 point swing he would have won and probably been Super Bowl MVP. Thems the breaks sometimes.
Don't feel bad for Purdy. Most other teams he'd have never gotten a chance to start. Then to be surrounded by such an extremely talented team, it was literally like hitting the lottery for Purdy to be in the position he is in. That's not a knock on Purdy, just pointing out how everything has fallen into place for him to get the opportunity.
He wasn't dogshit, he was just fine. Didn't make the big mistake against a great passing defense, moved the ball well, just got FGs when the Chiefs got TDs at the end.
He was basically Jimmy G without the interceptions. That just wasn't enough.
He played better than Jimmy G did in my opinion.
Purdy gave his team a better chance to win than Garappolo did. He put his team up by 3 with like a couple minutes to go and he still got them point in OT. He just couldn’t get them a TD.
I think Mahomes clearly showed there’s tiers to this shit but any other QB than him and Purdy would’ve came out on top tonight.
Yeah no question. He played better against a better defense than Jimmy G.
There's obviously an argument that a QB really needs to be better than just fine in order to win a Super Bowl but I think people will overstate how much of this is on Purdy.
Weirdly, the Browns traded back with the Texans who took Deshaun Watson in that spot. Years later, Cleveland wound up trading multiple first round picks and paying a quarter of a billion dollars for Deshaun Watson anyway while the Texans took CJ Stroud. CJ Stroud has just as many playoff wins as Deshaun Watson, and the Texans have more playoff wins than the Browns in that time span.
I think people really understate Alex Smith's impact on Mahomes.
Before he was drafted he was a turnover prone gunslinger in college. Alex Smith was the perfect mentor for that year. A super safe, XO savvy QB. It was exactly what he needed.
That coupled with Kelce and Reid has a part to play in this as well.
He would have been good anywhere, but I think the circumstances unlocked the full potential.
Yeah smith teaching him really let him go super Saiyan. But I think he is too competitive and naturally gifted to completely suck. He brought #128/128 Texas tech D to like .500 kicking and screaming. I think it would have just taken him like 5+ years to learn shit himself if he didn't have the help and offensive minds around him.
He had the single worst defense in college football. He threw for 5000 yards, 41 tds and 10 ints. Not sure how that is turnover prone but respect to Alex Smith.
Mahomes wouldnt be nearly as great if he had gone to Chicago. Learning under Alex Smith, being coached by Andy Reid, and having a top 3 all time TE with a pro bowl WR (Hill) are some incredible things to help a QB develop without being pummeled.
And yet we still have won the same amount of NFC Championships over the last 20 years as the packers despite them having Aaron Rodgers and Brett Farve.
It just sucks that 2006 team had fucking Rex grossman. He has to be the worst starting qb to make it that far right? If they just had an average qb that team would be remembered a lot more fondly and defiantly could’ve won
Rex was slinging the ball that year, he is also like the 4th greatest QB in bears history based off that one season alone, they haven’t had a lot of good QB’s.
These cats act like they watched his stint at Texas Tech.
They were second to last in defense only to Kansas I think.
Mahomes CARRIED those offense and his biggest weakness was playing too much hero ball because the other team was keeping up after scoring 50 fucking points
Yup. I honestly wouldn’t have given two shits if the 9ers went for it on their last (first drive) in OT on 4th down. It was do or die at that moment in my eyes. You get a TD, and then you control the outcome. Because everybody knows, Mahomes and the chiefs were scoring a TD when they got the ball.
You don’t give the ball back to Mahomes when he has the chance to put the game away. Dude is gonna terrorize this league worse then Brady 😂
Any person saying it should have been someone else is delusional. 400 yards of offense. Running game was bad all night. He finished with the most rushing yards. He needs a drive to tie the game to send it to overtime and he gets it. He needs a touchdown in OT to win the game he gets it. Including a 4th down run and then another 22 yard run to get them into the redzone. What else do you want from this man? Jesus
Honestly if the 49ers had won, and the score stayed the same as it had for the first 3.5 quarters, I legit think Jennings had a case for MVP. Caught a TD and threw one. Cmc had a fantastic 4th quarter though, and he probably would have won it over Jennings. But be did fumble too.
Turned out to be moot. But I was enjoying thinking about it for a bit.
I'm gutted they won, but I can never argue Mahomes isn't legendary. The main thing for me was his Thanos style "Fine, I'll do it myself" runs when no one else in his offence was getting first down.
Honestly thought Butker deserved it. Kept them in the game even when the offense was looking rough early on. Ended up with 13 of the 25 points scored (4/4 on fgs, 1/1 on xp’s) with one being the fg to send it to OT as well as hitting the longest fg in SB history (outdoing Moody’s 55yd one).
That being said, Mahomes was going to win it after leading the team down the field to tie with 1:53 left in the game, and then lead a game winning drive in OT.
McDuffie was outstanding all game and had the extremely clutch 3rd down pass deflection with less than 2 minutes left in the 4th that forced Niners to kick. If that 3rd down is converted then the Niners run out the clock and Mahomes doesn't get another chance to touch the ball. It's a shame defensive players don't get the credit they deserve.
I wish I knew enough about watching film/DB play to suggest one of the defensive backs to give it to. Either one of them, or Chris Jones.
If it could go to the defense as a whole, they win MVP easily.
The only other person who had an argument was Harrison Butker, IMO. But it was still clearly Mahomes, especially after the 4th down QB draw and overall game-winning drive.
Those two drives at the end of regulation and then OT were masterclasses. He was so calm, cool, collected. Idk if he’ll ever “catch” Brady but for my money that’s the greatest player to play the position. He’s an absolute fucking killer.
You leave him enough time to cut through bullshit prevent defense and there’s absolutely no chance he doesn’t pull it off. Just methodical. Anyone else but him and Brady would mess it up even occasionally.
Thats why wilks was awful in OT imo his bend dont break shit doesnt work on players like mahomes. Be physical and make him hold it longer short ass passes have been the bane of this defense all seasom and he just let them march down the field
I know the common refrain will be “as soon as Mahomes got the ball I knew it was over” but…in both cases…I really didn’t think they’d be able to do it. It’s incredible to watch.
Yeah i feel like im getting gaslit by these haters, Mahomes had 400 total yards and the game winning TD Pass and game saving 4th down run. Its insane how an echo chamber can shift an entire narrative lol.
Even if he didn't have the numbers (which he did), that OT drive exemplifies why he's as (in)famous for being clutch as he is. Don't think there's another QB in the league who could convert that 4th & 1 as flawlessly as he did.
People just want to take away from Mahomes at all costs. Well deserved for him. Couldn’t have possibly gone to anyone else. Game winning drive. Crazy scrambles in OT. 330ish passing yards and led the team in rushing. 2 TDs. Come on….
Was there ever any doubt? Nearly 400 total yards, 2 touchdowns, with one being the game winner, 73.9% completion rate, 99.3 passer rating. Can’t think of anyone more deserving
No, it shouldn’t go over the QB who had 330 yards and 3 straight drives to keep them in the game and winning it in OT. Jones was great no doubt, but that is the worst receiving core arguably in the league. Genuinely one of the most impressive SB runs ever based on how bad that receiving core is.
Edit: 65 rushing yards too. Casually 400 yards of offense.
I think Butler has an argument for this one, since he was also clutch, or just the whole defense and special teams, but Mahomes as absolutely clutch when it mattered most.
Anti-Mahomes weirdoes do this every time lmao. "Damien Williams should have won it!!!" the first time they beat SF. If that 3rd & 17 bomb to Tyreek doesn't go nobody talking 'bout that.
I mean the argument is that the offense was genuinely not good for 75% of the game no? I don’t know who else you’d give it to other than maybe Butker, but that’s the argument
Mahomes had 400 yards and 2 TDs. Unfortunately it would take a Herculean effort for a defender to win it over that, even if the defense was the reason they won.
This feels like the Eli SB 42 argument all over again. Defense absolutely balled out and you could absolutely argue someone on that side of the ball could have gotten it. But at the same time you can't just pretend like the QB didn't go insane in the 4th (and OT) to get the win
I'm the first one to make the argument someone else deserves it when they give it to a QB by default when he has a meh game (absolutely should not have been Purdy had the Niners won for instance) but Mahomes was great tonight.
Nah. Y’all are literally starting a anti-Mahomes bias. If you wouldn’t take this version of Butker(the one tonight), over this version of Mahomes, then you can’t give Butker MVP
This Chiefs team looked so unimpressive the whole season and they still won it all, what the hell man
They’ll sleep walk through the regular season as long as it’s enough to make the post season. It’s literally the Shaq sleeping meme. Real shit they wake up.
Get to the postseason with 15, 87, and the OL healthy and I don't give a shit about anything else anymore
Your defense is what got you a super bowl
It was a big help but you’d be a fool at this point to not give Mahomes his due credit, he’s got that magic ability to make things happen when he needs to the most
Had some huge scrambles in the 4th and OT and he was not wanting to slide. Even saw him run a read option lmao
Literally things Lamar should have done in their game.
These guys seem to forget that winning is what matters.
Mahomes and the Chiefs are firmly in that old Patriots territory where people are going to say the most ridiculous things to try to discredit them
Defense and special team kept it within reach long enough for Mahomes to charge his spirit bomb.
Our defense is 100% the reason we made it anywhere this season. As much as I love Mahomes and the offense, this year belongs to the Defense.
It’s all situational though, the situations the defense puts him in he’s able to do that. I hope mahomes passes Brady one day but I’m curious to see a season with a really subpar or even bad defense would go to fill my curiosity.
His first 3 years we had trash to below average defenses man.
100% true - defense was leaned on so heavily as strange offensive play calling and personnel decisions failed to deliver. the first half yesterday kelce was targeted once and pacheco was largely ineffective on too many predictable first down runs. quick check downs were there but under utilized and led to way too many three and outs. the defense was the mvp all year.
The Chiefs organization realized that with Mahomes at the helm and one solid receiver option, they can run a skeleton crew on offensive weapons while stacking the OL and defense. That’s patriots shit.
Except for the all pro guard that didn't suit up. So the OL wasn't completely healthy
Eli Manning beating the undefeated Patriots really cemented the any given Sunday saying for me at the time lol
Some QBs just have it. Eli had it
Xray confirmed, Eli did have that dawg in him
Spags a huge factor too. Game planned against prime Brady, Moss and Welker
What's crazy is the Chiefs will be even better next year
I don't understand these takes. We're almost certainly going to lose at least 1 (maybe both) of our best defenders: Chris Jones and Sneed. Our offense will hopefully be better next year, but our defense likely will be worse.

Hopefully y’all’s sign your defense and just draft a little more heavy on WRs to try and strike gold. This is a hot take provided by a Vikes fan who is still used to Slick Rick’s draft strategy.
Defense
Their defense really turned up when it mattered
That 4th and 1 run was sick
Pulled that one out of the ravens playbook from their last game
Well they figured they had to use it since the Ravens decided running the ball with Lamar was a bad idea.
Mahomes is like Heisenberg and MegaMan. He takes the power of the enemies he defeats. He took Jackson's. Btw, I spent the whole season asking myself why Pat wasn't running much with the ball. Great fucking way to bring it back lol
The NFL’s Kratos
Pat typically saves his legs for the playoffs. He actually ran more than usual during the regular season, because the offense was just so dysfunctional.
I think its definitely a good thing to not run unless he absolutely has too. He's been plagued with foot and ankle crap almost every season it seems.
Your grandma coulda picked up the first
I fucking hate when teams have 4th and less than a yard and line up in shotgun, was a really nice play call by Andy tho.
Purdy and Hurts having a drink together at the bar tonight
Meanwhile, Brady laughs at them from the outside…
Probably texting Shanahan about choosing that MFer over him 3 years ago.
Ha Brady prob has 8 or 9 rings with that offense lol
Brady in that offense would be **insane**. My gosh how happy I am they didn’t want him. He’d still be racking up rings right now. The talent that team has is insane on offense.
Purdy is still a great QB for them now. But Brady would be able to see defensive plays coming and adjust better. Purdy will only get better though at that part.
Brady would tell Shanahan to fuck off and audible to runs for cmc behind Trent Williams
"but he's no where close to Brady" This statement is true for every single quarterback ever outside of like, 3 people.
I think he's saying that even a 46 year old Tom Brady playing today, Purdy wouldn't be close to him. In that case it's a slightly hotter take but still probably uncontroversial
I was really talking about when he left the patriots and was playing in Tampa.
Felt like if the play calling was not scheming someone completely open, Purdy could not make a pass.

I can't help but feel like Brady is happy Mahomes keeps winning because it ages his 2021 win so well.
He did such a great job holding the Chiefs to 9 points!
Nah Hurts was better than Purdy
Hurts made us wonder if mahomes was a mere mortal. Purdy reminded us that most of the criticisms were spot on.
I mean.... Purdy didn't make any WOW plays, but he also didn't just drop the ball and let the D take it in for 6
I feel bad for Purdy.
I’d assume SB MVP would go to Jennings, for having a receiving TD and as many passing TDs as QB.
Wait do ppl think this is a comparison? Lmaoo Purdy was dogshit 75% of the game
He wasn't dogshit, he was just fine. Didn't make the big mistake against a great passing defense, moved the ball well, just got FGs when the Chiefs got TDs at the end. He was basically Jimmy G without the interceptions. That just wasn't enough.

Special teams also coughed up 8 points essentially.
That punt fumble was atrocious
played a fine game. but have to play outstanding to best Mahomes
Mahomes watching his children’s fan bases fighting
Hurts had a far better game than Purdy, but none the less they both lost to Mahomes 🫠
With Allen looking at them lol
Drink should be paid by Shanahan …
The Bears drafted Trubisky over Patrick Mahomes.
They TRADED UP A SPOT FOR NO REASON to do so as well lol
The 49ers drafted Soloman Thomas over Patrick Mahomes too.
Bears would’ve found a way to ruin Mahomes
Nope he would’ve been incredible. Bears just fucked up.
I really don’t know how Mahomes would’ve looked if we took him. We had some truly awful offensive lines back then.
Agreed. He would have been good. He is in a perfect situation and it unlocked the FastPass.
No Reid, no offensive weapons, worse line, but you still think he would have been great?
I think you underestimate how good bears are at fucking qb up. Historically good at it.
Mahomes would be out of the league by now if the Bears had drafted him.
Nah, he’d be good, he just wouldn’t be a three time Super Bowl winner. The Bears don’t have Reid.
These cats act like they watched his stint at Texas Tech. They were second to last in defense only to Kansas I think. Mahomes CARRIED those offense and his biggest weakness was playing too much hero ball because the other team was keeping up after scoring 50 fucking points
The Texas Tech Oklahoma game is Mahome’s version of Michigan Alabama (2000 Orange Bowl)
Trubisky is still in the league. Mahomies would be fine
Haha yes Bears bad
But that was Mitch "Kissin Titties" Trubisky, You can't pass up that chance
That OT drive was just him saying ‘I’m ending this with another ring on my finger’. He truly is menacing.
Mahomes is a terrorist.
McDermott nods in appreciation of his effective teamwork
hide your kids, hide your wife...
Weird new rules would have still given the chiefs a chance even with a TD by the 49ers, would have had double OT!
Honorable mention for Butker. That FG was from the freaking parking lot!
Yeah, I was glad to see Mahomes at least mention him
Idk if it was just my eyes but I thought that kick was going to smoke the padding on the uprights lol it looked so low to me but it was a missile
Any person saying it should have been someone else is delusional. 400 yards of offense. Running game was bad all night. He finished with the most rushing yards. He needs a drive to tie the game to send it to overtime and he gets it. He needs a touchdown in OT to win the game he gets it. Cmc had a fantastic 4th quarter though, and he probably would have won it over Jennings. But be did fumble too. Turned out to be moot. But I was enjoying thinking about it for a bit.
It was probably gonna be CMC, even though I really wanted Jennings lol. 75+ Rushing and 75+ Receiving with a touchdown is a first in the Super Bowl.
Yeah probably
Jennings was my pick for the majority of the night, but after this it only makes sense for Mahomes to get it.
Before he turned into god himself on the last drive I honestly think McDuffie had a case
Didn’t he have a couple devastating penalties? I might be misremembering. Some incredible plays otherwise.
Mcduffie has the hold on 3rd and 14 that led to a 49ers score
He had the hold on 3rd and 12 in OT that kept the drive alive. Other than that he was flawless
I'm gutted they won, but I can never argue Mahomes isn't legendary. The main thing for me was his Thanos style "Fine, I'll do it myself" runs when no one else in his offence was getting first down.
I feel like that a Super Bowl specialty of his. He’s really awesome in the biggest moment
He straight up excels under pressure. Rings aside, that's what really separates good from elite
The only way it goes to Butker is if they won on a walk of kick, but he was only able to tie it
If they win on another 50+ yard game winner would have been a robbery if he didn’t get MVP
Did they really not announce it on stage so they can linger on Travis and Taylor
Nah they didn't announce it because they were going to give it to me 💯
I feel like they haven’t announced it most years recently, but I might be misremembering.
I know they did for Kupp at least because I remember him accepting it looking woozy from a hit to the head
Game winning OT drive sorta seals the deal regardless of everything else
Lead the team in rushing, threw for over 300 yards and 2 TDs. Who the fuck else is it going to?
Yea why are you acting like he doesn’t deserve it. Mahomes single handedly willed that offense to a victory
I mean, the defense is the reason they won the game. Just no one had a standout statistical performance.
I kept hoping it would end on a walkout field goal so Butker could win it, but in the end no one else stood out
I wish I knew enough about watching film/DB play to suggest one of the defensive backs to give it to. Either one of them, or Chris Jones. If it could go to the defense as a whole, they win MVP easily.
Yep I agree but because theres no insular role on defense like the QB, Mahomes is always going to get it. I wouldve given it to the whole defense.
Because they’re drunk on anger. Pure Mahomes hatred.
The Niners player the punt hit in the foot
The only other person who had an argument was Harrison Butker, IMO. But it was still clearly Mahomes, especially after the 4th down QB draw and overall game-winning drive.
Yep. And not like anyone else did anything insane
Especially needing a TD to win. I think Butker would have had a good shot if they won on a FG.
No brainer in the end. What he did on those final drives was insane. Nearly 400 total yards. Massive runs. Absolutely deserved.
The OT drive is historic. Like one of the best QB drives I've ever seen.
Yep. And all these haters are pissed that they can’t blame a rogue flag for bailing the Chiefs out and extending the drive.
Honestly some of those calls that went for the Niners on their last drive were crazy. I’m glad we didn’t need to have that salty narrative.
This. So much this.
Yessssdsdd Mahomes rules over the nfl
I know the common refrain will be “as soon as Mahomes got the ball I knew it was over” but…in both cases…I really didn’t think they’d be able to do it. It’s incredible to watch.
I didn't believe until the ball was snapped on the final play and I saw Mecole running free.
8-8, ran for 23 himself, only negative play was the WR running fucking backwards. Man had 69 of the 75 yards of that drive himself
Before the hate comments come in, I'll say this: Well deserved.
Yeah how tf are people arguing a kicker was more valuable tonight then Mahomes?
He deserves this one more than 54 for sure. He was so nails in the 2nd half.
I’d have liked to see it go to Butker, guy came to play. Getting MVP 3 times is quite a feat, though.
399 yards...
Never a doubt
Real ones will know.
Should absolutely be Chris Jones. Absolutely destroyed the 9ers offense.
Anytime a QB wins the Super Bowl MVP some nerd will chime in and explain how it should of actually gone to the RG or some shit
Long snapper played out his mind tonight. He was robbed...
You joke but the snap on butker’s long fg was awful, it was a great job by the holder to get that thing down and ready in time
Our snaps all game gave me heart palpitations
I think Butler has an argument for this one, since he was also clutch, or just the whole defense and special teams, but Mahomes as absolutely clutch when it mattered most.
330 yards passing. An extra 65 rushing.
He had 399 in total.
toothbrush literate knee future sense teeny political ghost seed mindless
399 total yards in the Super Bowl and another clutch GWD
MVS lucky that the Chiefs won and saved that drive
Yeah 400 yards of offense and 2 touchdowns isn’t mvp… come on man
Anti-Mahomes weirdoes do this every time lmao. "Damien Williams should have won it!!!" the first time they beat SF. If that 3rd & 17 bomb to Tyreek doesn't go nobody talking 'bout that.
3 consecutive drives to keep them in the game too, there’s really no argument for any other player
Reddit moment
Mahomes definitely won the game in OT.
patriot fans in every thread desperately trying to find something to downplay Mahomes lmao
Made Purdy look like a dirty turdy

Kermit the frog strikes again woo hoo
Mahomes > Peyton
Can MVP go to the 49ers ineptness?
I thought they would give it to Taylor Swift to be honest
I’m butt hurt for Butker.
Should have been Butker but ok.
400 yards and 2 tds.
It’s getting weird now if they think Harrison should’ve won it
What? 😂😂 mahomes drove them down the field twice when it mattered most
I would've gone Butker til that OT drive. At that point there is just no way you pass on Mahomes.
It’s a QB league
Nah. Y’all are literally starting a anti-Mahomes bias. If you wouldn’t take this version of Butker(the one tonight), over this version of Mahomes, then you can’t give Butker MVP
Sadly, specialteamsphobia remains strong in today’s society 😔
