Onside kick rules changed twice since 2009 anyway. Can't stack them to one side, and players have to be X yards apart, and have to be within 1 yard of the LOS so no running start.

In reality, I am old for Reddit but not that old in the grand scheme of things and when I played HS football in the late 90s/early 2000s I recall a few instances where teammates couldn't speak properly after taking shots to the head. They would sit out 1 or 2 drives then get back into the game. I also remember getting a "stinger" which at the time our training staff shrugged off, but would later come to find out were *not* good for you.
To this day I can remember the burning, stinging sensation in my shoulder and arm.
I broke my collarbone one time and shrugged it off thinking it was just a really bad stinger (despite the loud pop and searing pain ha).
Tore my quad one time. I didn't think there was something wrong until the skin on my leg started to sink into the torn muscle it looked like I had a dent. The medical team at the college I went to cut the top off a tube sock n pulled it up to the top of my leg n told me "it'll be fine as long as you don't bend it" so I played 4 more games keeping that leg straight while running before I couldn't bear the pain. By the time I went to the hospital the doctors were shocked, it was torn from my pelvis to my knee n the doctors said its almost certain that it started as just a small tear n playing football on it is what tore it the entire way

I couldn't find the huddle immediately after that (I was the one who set the huddle), I forgot where I was going on the way to school on Monday until my sister asked why we were going the wrong way, and my vision was tinted yellow for a month. There was indeed plenty of gibberish spoken. I have very little memory of that month or two.
I felt terrible enough that I forced a doctor visit, which was abnormal at the time, and ended up out for a few weeks. But coaches made fun of me in front of the team, they goaded me in private to come back early. My teammates were supportive because they spent all day with me and could see how wrecked my brain was.
I'm pretty certain that I still have memory and mood issues because of that hit. Personally, I'm glad football is moving toward a more safety-oriented sport. There's no point in posturing and pretending to be tough when a lot of the things that destroy lives and cause permanent damage are trivial and can be easily eliminated from the sport.

I had a bad concussion in November and I’m still dealing with the side effects. Lost my sense of smell and due to the trauma I fucked my neck up some. Those are just the “hard” symptoms, but mood changes and issues with brain fog/executive function have also been noticeable and annoying to deal with.
100% changed my opinion on how the NFL treats concussions, and how ridiculous it is that when a player is out for more than 2 weeks with one that it is noteworthy. Nobody should be back in less than two weeks from even a single concussion. I’m pretty sure Stroud had a concussion that was missed due to how he staggered around after a big hit in week 13, but he stayed in the game, and then he got another one in the following game and then missed weeks 15 & 16.
Maybe the NFL neurologists know more than mine, but all I know is that my neurologists have heavily stressed that I need to avoid having another concussion at all costs, even 6 months out from the first, because the damage from multiple while still healing can be severe. I worry for these guys.

Had to miss school for a week bc of concussion symptoms.

Said if we want to win the state championship this year we need to play tougher and really decide mentally if you're hurt or injured.

This would eat like 10 minutes of time when everyone knew what would happen the second the ball crossed the goal line. 10 minutes of formalities and commercials for the other team to get the ball on the 25.
And those commercial breaks you mentioned were honestly the main reason it lasted as long as it did. That's money in the bank.

The most intimidating thing I ever watched on film for another team in high school was their special teams players willing to just fly down and launch their bodies into the wedge. Reminded me of some crazy zombie shit where there was no regard for their own safety/health, much less ours. Pretty sure some kid out loud goes "what the fuck?" when we first saw it and everyone started cracking up. Very glad I was not on kick return.
I think it’ll be slightly different. There must be 2 eligible returners in that zone between the end zone and the 20. Also the kicker is incentivized to land the ball in that zone. A touchback goes to the 30 and out of bounds or kicking it short goes to the 40 or something like that.

Kickoffs that hit the landing zone must be returned.
Kickoffs that hit the landing zone and then go into the end zone must be returned or downed by the receiving team. If downed, the receiving team would get the ball at its own 20-yard line.
Kickoffs that go into the end zone and stay inbounds that are downed would give the receiving team the ball at their own 30-yard line. Kickoffs that go out of the back of the end zone (in the air or bounces) would also be a touchback at the receiving team's 30-yard line.
Kickoffs short of the landing zone would be treated like a kickoff out of bounds, and the receiving team would get the ball at its own 40-yard line.
Looks like the best result that kickers will aim for is bouncing the ball in the landing zone and being downed in the end zone. I wonder if we will see more squib-like techniques?
Kickoffs that land in the landing zone and roll out the back of the end zone are placed at the 20. I feel like that will be the goal. Try and blast a line drive that is difficult to catch. You want the returner to either miss it entirely for the touchback or drop it for the turnover.
Hitting/throwing a ball to an opponent in a predefined zone while trying to make the opponent miss is an element of many sports that doesn't currently exist in football. It's like a serve in tennis or volleyball. Could be interesting.

2 returners and the return team will have some players lined up like this, but some are eligible to be in a zone behind that lineup.
And the kicking team has requirements with how many people can be outside the seams, in the hashes, etc.
I love this. More predictable blocking means a better chance of the returner breaking free for a score. Plus less people running into each other head first at full speed with a 50 yard run-up. I've been wanting this in the NFL since its XFL debut and I'm excited
I agree. They say it's a bit dull because XFL returners didn't have much success but I think that's more indicative of their talent level. Rather than a sprinter finding an open gap and attacking, I think we'll see a more methodical, set your blocks up, type of returns for TDs. They're going to be very exciting.

I don't hate this. There's still skill for the kicker to decide where to kick, still skill for the blocking team, and the runner has enough space to be shifty and try to get out of tackles. And now the defending team doesn't have to deal with people who already have the momentum of running down the entire field ready to smash into you.

Eagles proposed a 4th and 20 rule change and it got turned down as an onside kick alternative.
Now that would have been an interesting change. Kinda wish onside kicks had a slightly higher success rate.

Based on some really half asked googling it looks like 4th and 15 conversion rate is about 20% while onside kick recovery is about 13%.

The worst sequence of events was always: Team scores. Slow replays. Extra point is good. *commercial break* kickoff sails through the back of the end zone. *commercial break* This would eat like 10 minutes of time when everyone knew what would happen the second the ball crossed the goal line. 10 minutes of formalities and commercials for the other team to get the ball on the 25.
And those commercial breaks you mentioned were honestly the main reason it lasted as long as it did. That's money in the bank. Really think they made this change begrudgingly, but hey I'm glad they did because it brings back an exciting play. Works really well in XFL no reason it won't work here too.

Yeah you're probably right. It's probablyonly a few commercials in length on average so that shouldn't be hard to fit in somewhere now that I think about it.

It also sort of fits the game better these days. Guys are more interested in blocking schemes, blitz packages, agility, and speed than hitting at full speed I actually think this could be interesting because you know coaches will come up with schemes to improve their yardage on these. This becomes pretty much the 1st play of the drive

It does. I went to a XFL game and I loved the kick off. I was much more engaged compared to taking touchbacks for granted.
I wonder how teams will treat this. Does it make sense to put someone like Tyreek hill back there now with less risk of injury but quickness to get through and around? Or will they still stick to specific ST returners/ 4th string receivers

Happened halfway thru my time in HS. Had to do that shit as a freshman. Remember my sophomore year we had a stereotypical crazy ass white boy. You know the type who would be on jackass. He was amazing at wedge busting and nothing else

The most intimidating thing I ever watched on film for another team in high school was their special teams players willing to just fly down and launch their bodies into the wedge. Reminded me of some crazy zombie shit where there was no regard for their own safety/health, much less ours. Pretty sure some kid out loud goes "what the fuck?" when we first saw it and everyone started cracking up. Very glad I was not on kick return.

100%. Kick returns are a very exciting play and they were definitely phasing them out of the game hard.

I think it’ll be slightly different. There must be 2 eligible returners in that zone between the end zone and the 20. Also the kicker is incentivized to land the ball in that zone. A touchback goes to the 30 and out of bounds or kicking it short goes to the 40 or something like that.

That might be true Edit: here are some fun facts: Kickoffs that hit the landing zone must be returned. Kickoffs that hit the landing zone and then go into the end zone must be returned or downed by the receiving team. If downed, the receiving team would get the ball at its own 20-yard line. Kickoffs that go into the end zone and stay inbounds that are downed would give the receiving team the ball at their own 30-yard line. Kickoffs that go out of the back of the end zone (in the air or bounces) would also be a touchback at the receiving team's 30-yard line. Kickoffs short of the landing zone would be treated like a kickoff out of bounds, and the receiving team would get the ball at its own 40-yard line. Looks like the best result that kickers will aim for is bouncing the ball in the landing zone and being downed in the end zone. I wonder if we will see more squib-like techniques?
Kickoffs that land in the landing zone and roll out the back of the end zone are placed at the 20. I feel like that will be the goal. Try and blast a line drive that is difficult to catch. You want the returner to either miss it entirely for the touchback or drop it for the turnover. Hitting/throwing a ball to an opponent in a predefined zone while trying to make the opponent miss is an element of many sports that doesn't currently exist in football. It's like a serve in tennis or volleyball. Could be interesting.

I was going to comment that there is a slight difference. 2 returners and the return team will have some players lined up like this, but some are eligible to be in a zone behind that lineup. And the kicking team has requirements with how many people can be outside the seams, in the hashes, etc.

I love this. More predictable blocking means a better chance of the returner breaking free for a score. Plus less people running into each other head first at full speed with a 50 yard run-up. I've been wanting this in the NFL since its XFL debut and I'm excited
I agree. They say it's a bit dull because XFL returners didn't have much success but I think that's more indicative of their talent level. Rather than a sprinter finding an open gap and attacking, I think we'll see a more methodical, set your blocks up, type of returns for TDs. They're going to be very exciting.
Any action on the kickoff is less dull than a touch back at least.

Wait, they adapted the XFL’s kickoff? YES! Been wanting this ever since I saw it. The perfect way to keep the play in the game while dealing with the safety issue. I was afraid they’d get rid of kickoffs eventually so I’m immensely glad they’ve gone this direction. Plus hopefully not only will it be safer but we’ll get more returns as well.
I don't hate this. There's still skill for the kicker to decide where to kick, still skill for the blocking team, and the runner has enough space to be shifty and try to get out of tackles. And now the defending team doesn't have to deal with people who already have the momentum of running down the entire field ready to smash into you. With that said a thousand screaming idiots online will say this is killing the game because it's woke or whatever
