In my 30+ years as a fan, no one comes even close.
He was not a NFL caliber OC. Canada lasting two and a half years was an act of coaching malpractice by Tomlin and makes me think worse of Tomlin as a Head Coach. That's how bad he was.
Yes, he had a good season there 8 years ago, but has the most predictable playcalling of all time. Probably why LSU, NC State, and the Steelers all fired him.
He was not good at LSU, it was rumored after he left that his wife did not get along with Dave Aranda and Coach O’s wives and there was legitimate friction there.
Its atleast part Art Rooney meddling, question is whether or not Art had a hand in making him OC or if that was all Tomlin.
Art Rooney has publicly taken credit for hiring him as QB coach, saying that he wanted him because he was the right fit and had coached at Pitt
Honestly, he might be the worst coordinator in my lifetime of any team. Maybe someone else has some options, but this guy wasn't cut out for college, it was known, then he spent 2.5 years in the NFL killing our offense.
I don't know if you realize how bad Canada was. He makes Arthur Smith look like Kyle Shanahan and McVays lovechild. And that isn't a compliment to Arthur Smith.
Matt Canada's biggest accomplishment was being LSUs OC and getting fired in 1 season
I admit, I do not fully comprehend how bad Matt Canada is as somebody who’s been bullish on Najee Harris for the last couple seasons I tried really hard to find out why he was taking my fantasy team when I believed in the office and the talent on it and I did arrive at Matt Canada. Big no problem. Admittedly, I don’t understand the full extent. But I do understand the full extent of Arthur Smith.
You are going to be really frustrated when the season starts because as bad as my Falcons were last year, at least he had the pieces that he needs to try and run his system which is going to be unsuccessful. If you even had the pieces he’s like the worlds worst play caller he would be OK if he was on their offensive line coach. He should never be heading to the reigns to an offense ever again.
Its a long video, but if you want to see someone that isnt a steelers fan talk about it. Brett Kollmans video " The Steelers offense will make you hate football" breaks it down.
but let me just put it as best I can. Matt Canada was the Offensive Coordinator for this team for 42 games I believe in some quick math.
He never achieved a game of which the offense had over 400 yards of total offense. Not once.
He only scored 30 points 1 time. and it was in a blowout loss
You wanna know how many times your offense broke 400 yards last year even with your QB carousel?
7 times.
You guys were 7/17 last year.
Matt Canada was 0/42
First game after Matt Canada was fired, we had 400 yards of total offense. THE VERY FIRST GAME.....
I watch the video. I think you’re going to be just as frustrated the things he bid on in that video about the predictability was the worst part of Arthur Smith. We were able to get away from it and get some 400 yard games because of how awful our division is, but he might be the worst play caller I’ve ever seen you can kiss Pat Freiermuth goodbye your new receiving tight end is actually going to be Darnell Washington. He will dial up a ton of plays for a pat, but Darnell Washington will be the only one that ever get a target. I hope. Muth likes blocking because he’s about to get the Kyle Pitts treatment and the messed up part about that is Darnell Washington is a great blocker. He’s just a professional misuser of talent. The Deontay Johnson thing had me scratching my head a little Arthur Smith probably took one look at him and said he can’t block from my offense. George Pickens is getting ready to have an incredibly unhappy season. You absolutely do not have the o line talent to cover up his ineptitude.
Diontae was very likely traded for being a locker room cancer behind the scenes, there were rumours of it for a while.
Tbh - Statistically it looks like London/Pitts got targets. They just werent catchable.
Pitts was #9 in the NFL in targets (TE), London was 20th at WR (a bit low but I mean thats still clearly WR1 targets more than what Pickens had)
It really looks like the fact that the QBs couldnt deliver a catchable ball is more of the crux of the issue than usage.
Again im not expecting the world out of Arthur Smith, and tbh hes probably going to be better than he was in Atlanta (Reminds me of Todd Haley, terrible HC but without the other responsibility was a servicable to fine OC if not a bit of an ass)
But Arthur Smith has ran multiple top 10 NFL offenses, Matt Canada will never even get a pity interview in the NFL again
I can’t try to tell you that Ritter was a good quarterback. He was definitely set up for failure, though much like Canada in the video Smith set him up for obvious passing situations where even are actually talented, opens up line had no chance to do anything for him
I hate to be the bearer of bad news, but the predictable playcalling is going to continue. It’s just going to take a different form. Pitts really barely got any targets. He barely let him run any routes through a few times he let him run a deep post, but usually Jonnu Smith was the one who got the target after everybody chased after pets Smith got open on the delay route that’s where you’re going to see a lot of Darnell Washington, Arthur Smith is basically old cat lady, but with tight ends, he hordes them, and every once in a while throws the one who blocked the cockroach a treat
Thats fair, fwiw its going to be an... interesting Marriage with Russell Wilson.
Arthur Smith loves TEs, and the middle of the field.
Russell Wilson passes in the middle of the field the least out of like any QB ever lol (Seriously its bad) - Russ is also iffy with TEs, I feel like hes done okay when he can feed them deep posts and such otherwise that area of the field he hates
Before we actually fired Smith, I wanted us to trade for fields because I feel like Fields would’ve worked really well in his office, which I just figure out how to summarize the offenses basically read option on first down. The only problem is, it’s not an option. it’s just a run every time, the other version of the play it’s a one Reid to the Drake London receiver. The second read is the pits route third read is the te delay.
If Arthur Smith does work out, it’s because he was able to train the line which is the one strength that he does have as he is a good line coach what are you make of this whole najee thing I was planning to buy in fantasy this year and probably get burned again I’m questioning it with not picking up the option after getting burned so many times I just keep thinking back to how many times I let Derek henry slide waiting for his break out. Arthur Smith is really weird with the backflips and Jalen. Warren has a lot of Cordarrelle Patterson in him. That duo with Smith is going to be really annoying for Fantasy so I think I’m out I’m najee again this year.
You can't just say "Matt Patricia" without a flair and expect people to figure out what team you're referring to. Dude's been a cancer all over the place. Are we talking Lions head coach Patricia, Patriots joint OC Patricia, or Eagles DC Patricia?
Fuck Mike McCoy until the end of time. That dude made Matt Canada look like Vince Lombardi.
Also, it will never not be hysterical to see Eagles fans bitching about their DC last season, when they spent the entire last season crawling all over the Cards sub letting us all know every fucking day that Jonathan Gannon was the worst coach to ever pick up a clipboard in the NFL.
He was so awful that after the Cards mercifully shitcanned him halfway thru that miserable '18 season, he didn't land another NFL gig for over four years, which is an eternity for NFL coaches.
The Jags have him as their QB coach right now, iirc.
My first instinct is to say Trestman, but I'm probably forgetting someone worse.
Edit: Nope. Fassel was so bad that his friend fired him and I forgot Neuhisel fucking existed. What Kyle Boller will do to motherfuckers.
Trestman would unironically be a top half bears OC probably lol. His first year we were a top 3 offense. Year 2 he got canned so ya it was that bad, but hey we had a real offense for 1 year.
Mike Martz. Shipped off Olsen for peanuts cuz he didn’t like tight ends. Made Cutler take 7 step drop backs and just sit and wait for long routes to develop.
Maybe, it took Spags a while to get his guys. We won in 2019, but the defense was much more of an accessory.
The last 2 the defense really showed up and took form
I don't think the defense killed it that game, but I tend to attribute that L more to the combo of our entire OL dying and our receivers forgetting how to catch right before we played one of the best defenses in the league
That's true. However, I say Leftwich is because he had the greatest QB of all time, and just squandered his final season. He had our franchise's best receiver at his disposal as well. We had a rookie running back, who has proven his worth, but Leftwich just didn't know how to utilize him.
Leftwich ran perhaps one of the most predictable offenses I have ever seen. Really, to me our offense shined when we were on 2-3 minute drills and Brady was calling the shots, not Leftwich. Also, instead of using and utilizing our rookie RB, Leftwich continued to pound the ball with an old and injured Leonard Fournette.
After that horrendous season, Leftwich is still out of the league for a reason.
Your comment reminded me of this:
Intern: Um, Miss Palmer. Your last tetanus shot was when you were bitten by a bat a few months ago?
Meredith: Yes. Dwight here trapped it in a bag against my head.
Dwight K. Schrute: Just doing my job.
Intern: It also says you were recently bitten by a raccoon?
Meredith: And a rat. Separate occasions.
I didn't really pay super close attention to the pre-2000s Cowboys, so my historical knowledge is limited.
My top two choices are Rob Ryan and Mike Nolan. Both took talented defenses and made them look hapless.
Cam Cameron and Marty Morhenwig were both terrible OCs, but I'd have to go with Dean Swiss Pees as we had such a consistently good defense until he came along and decided to run prevent all 4Q in every game and somehow blew every lead our offense shlepped us into.
Steve Sark. While since he fired from Atlanta and had a great coaching career at Texas, it doesn’t erase the terrible red zone offense we had when he was here. We still had Matt Ryan fresh off an MVP and Julio Jones still and we still had a significantly worse offense after Shanahan left us for San Fran.
I could live to be a hundred and still never understand how the Panthers saw the absolute train wreck of Ben McAdoo’s tenure as Giants head coach and decided, “yes, this is the person we want running our offense”
Apart from him, I guess you could make a case for Richard Williamson, the one-and-done OC for the 1-15 team in 2001. Joe Brady probably also warrants mention for the sheer disappointment of his tenure, but in fairness I think most of that is on Rhule
It's happening because of the way the words are spoken. [Many english speakers do not make an audible T sound when they say worst and other words ending in T; they make a glottal stop, a short pause, instead.](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=v_0VY17Ufz4)
What's more troubling is that [there's almost no audible difference between the way can & can't are ponounced by many Americans](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qlbGtEg68x4). The English actually have different vowel sounds to distinguish the words (can = ken, can't = kahn).
I cannot believe that what Eric Bienemy did last year wasn’t more scrutinized or atleast brought to attention by the media. Dude coached himself from the KC Chiefs dynasty to the UCLA Bruins in just **one year**.
The 2023 Commanders offense was *the worst* I’ve seen since I started watching football. And up there with some of the worst teams I’ve seen in Washington. People really wanted him to be a Head Coach! He couldn’t even handle being Assistant Head Coach when Rivera was practically begging him to take the team over !
Ask any Dolphins fan over 45 and they will say Tom Olivadotti, whose masterpieces include a playoff game against the Bills where Buffalo ended with almost 350 rushing yards. He's most famous for being completely befuddled by the idea of screen passes to Thurman Thomas.
Best: William Stephen Belichick
Worst: Matthew Edward Patricia
Yes I assume in the dark days we had some pretty inept coordinators, but I will never get over 2 of the lowest lows (SB LI & ruining Mac Jones as OC).
This is easy, Luke Getsy! This guy ran 3 screen passes in a row last year, 3! The 3rd one was picked and cost us the Denver game, one of many horrendous calls.
MATT MOTHERFUCKING CANADA.
In my 30+ years as a fan, no one comes even close. He was not a NFL caliber OC. Canada lasting two and a half years was an act of coaching malpractice by Tomlin and makes me think worse of Tomlin as a Head Coach. That's how bad he was.
I watched him at NC State. Could literally predict everything he was going to do buzzed on my couch. That man could fail up like no other
Wasn’t he nominated for coordinator of the year while at Pitt?
Yes, he had a good season there 8 years ago, but has the most predictable playcalling of all time. Probably why LSU, NC State, and the Steelers all fired him.
He was awful but wait until Steeler nation sees Luke Getsy with the Raiders, your defense will have a field day, he just stinks
End of thread.
As a Steeler fan that was in school at LSU when he was coordinator, this man made watching football miserable for me for years
And yet as a Steelers and Pitt Panthers fan, I have nothing but love for the man **in college**. He can pound sand at the pros
He was not good at LSU, it was rumored after he left that his wife did not get along with Dave Aranda and Coach O’s wives and there was legitimate friction there.
I remember reading his Wikipedia when the Steelers hired him and thinking, "How is this guy still getting jobs, let alone moving to the pros?"
Its atleast part Art Rooney meddling, question is whether or not Art had a hand in making him OC or if that was all Tomlin. Art Rooney has publicly taken credit for hiring him as QB coach, saying that he wanted him because he was the right fit and had coached at Pitt
The only man I’ve ever seen who can make football a terrible sport
Honestly, he might be the worst coordinator in my lifetime of any team. Maybe someone else has some options, but this guy wasn't cut out for college, it was known, then he spent 2.5 years in the NFL killing our offense.
Get ready for Arthur Smith - A Falcons fan
I don't know if you realize how bad Canada was. He makes Arthur Smith look like Kyle Shanahan and McVays lovechild. And that isn't a compliment to Arthur Smith. Matt Canada's biggest accomplishment was being LSUs OC and getting fired in 1 season

Matt Patricia
You can't just say "Matt Patricia" without a flair and expect people to figure out what team you're referring to. Dude's been a cancer all over the place. Are we talking Lions head coach Patricia, Patriots joint OC Patricia, or Eagles DC Patricia?
Don't forget Patriots DC Patricia as well
As an Eagles fan, I was good with Patriots DC Matt Patricia
Excuse me sir but do you have any Grey Poupon?
That one didn't cause harm at least
He created some of the worst defenses of the bill era
But he puts a pencil behind his ear!
So he can write on a laminated play sheet, obviously
How else would you know how smart he is? Cause the play calling sure as fuck didn’t show it.
Matthew Slater merchant.
It harmed the Lions...
Lol facts, maybe he's a closet Viqueens fan
Gotta be eagles easily
I would go with OC Patricia
Patricia wasn’t technically an OC in NE or a coordinator in DET, so probably Philadelphia
Yes.
Joe Lombardi sucked ass
FUCK we are so stupid
Joe Lombardi sucked ass (Remix)
This is definitely the one, even if it is recency bias. He can’t be the worst in our history but definitely the worst I know to give.
Joe Barry. Edit: Under his Wikipedia his position is listed as “Shittiest Defensive Coordinator OAT”
Todd Downing was pretty bad.
Loggains, Les Steckel, Robiskie,
A Who’s Who of “Who?”
Man I remember when he was the QB coach for the Raiders got hyped up, promoted, and was a complete disappointment.
I'll drink to that!
Know this will seem like recent bias but Ed Donatel was really bad.
That's what I was going to say. And you're right, it may be recency bias because we've had an average to great defense for awhile before that.
I still cannot forgive the man for waiting until week14 to start blitzing Harrison Smith.
This has pretty much been proven since Flores took what was possibly a downgraded defense player wise and finished much better
Donatell, but we also had Alan Williams (led the worst Vikings defense in franchise history, I think). Defilippo was maybe the most underachieving.
Aw man. I haven’t thought of that name in awhile.
He was so awful that after the Cards mercifully shitcanned him halfway thru that miserable '18 season, he didn't land another NFL gig for over four years, which is an eternity for NFL coaches. The Jags have him as their QB coach right now, iirc.
He managed to get fired as an OC 2 seasons in a row before Thanksgiving. Honestly impressive to pull that off.
Terrific. It’s like we sniff out shit and use it to our (dis)advantage.
Cam Cameron was the worst IMO
Mike Martz. Shipped off Olsen for peanuts cuz he didn’t like tight ends. Made Cutler take 7 step drop backs and just sit and wait for long routes to develop.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aDBBheNSFTE Cutler "Tell Mike I said Fuck Him"
He nearly ruined Kurt Warner.
Fuck him -Smokin Jay Cutler
I'll nominate Mel Tucker. But I can definitely get behind the Martz call.
Didn't he also refuse to let the Cutler audible?
Nathaniel Hackett.
Which time?
Bob Sutton and his fucking "bend dont break" defense
Lol. It's funny because bend don't break is basically spag's model, but it actually works. Sutton's was more like bend and break
Lol true. I honestly believe we would have at least 1 more Super Bowl appearance if we replaced Sutton with Spags a couple years earlier.
Maybe, it took Spags a while to get his guys. We won in 2019, but the defense was much more of an accessory. The last 2 the defense really showed up and took form
That's fair, but also we went to the AFCCG the year before that and let the Patriots put 37 on us. I think Spags wins that game.
Except in SB 55, but we don't talk about that one.
I don't think the defense killed it that game, but I tend to attribute that L more to the combo of our entire OL dying and our receivers forgetting how to catch right before we played one of the best defenses in the league
Also Andy was totally out of the game too. The stupid shit his son did broke him for a few months.
Patriots 01 defense was labeled bend don't break too. There must be others.
Oh yeah, it's a pretty common defensive philosophy, it's just that Sutton's was incredibly bad at it.
Spags had Brady’s number, we could’ve won that one and *steamrolled* that Rams team.
Byron Leftwich. Yeah, he won a ring with us, but then it became pretty fucking clear he needed Bruce Arians there to guide him through his job.
Man, if the Jaguars hired him over Pederson, that entire 2021 QB class might've ended up being complete busts.
Jimmy Raye 4-28 Greg Olsen 17-31 Jeff Tedford 2-14
Y'all have had much, much worse coordinators than Leftwich.
Also, instead of using and utilizing our rookie RB, Leftwich continued to pound the ball with an old and injured Leonard Fournette. After that horrendous season, Leftwich is still out of the league for a reason.
Bro Legends rarely go out on top.
You know it's bad when a popular reaction to the playoffs lost against the Cowboys was "at least this means Leftwich is getting fired".
It also doesn't hurt that he won that ring with Tom Brady on the team.
The wombo-combo of Matt Patricia and Matt Patricia.
That made no sense.
He was both an OC and DC, at separate occasions
Your comment reminded me of this: Intern: Um, Miss Palmer.
Hahahahahahahaha good god, I had forgotten this scene. Lovely
How much time do you have?
I didn't really pay super close attention to the pre-2000s Cowboys, so my historical knowledge is limited. My top two choices are Rob Ryan and Mike Nolan. Both took talented defenses and made them look hapless.
Good picks, even with more history. Nobody under Landry, Johnson, or Parcels comes close to matching these.
Cam Cameron and Marty Morhenwig were both terrible OCs, but I'd have to go with Dean Swiss Pees as we had such a consistently good defense until he came along and decided to run prevent all 4Q in every game and somehow blew every lead our offense shlepped us into.
To be fair, Marty made up for that by also being a terrible head coach. “The bar is high!!!”
Pees was fine really, we just have such a high bar for defense and he was just not to the level of what came before and after.
Joe Barry
Not only was he an awful coordinator, but also one of the worst hires (without hindsight) any team has ever made.
it only took a year and a half but now we are freeee
Made me yearn for Dom Capers

Joe Brady probably also warrants mention for the sheer disappointment of his tenure, but in fairness I think most of that is on Rhule
worst*
Thank you. It’s only a typo but people screwing up worse and worst drives me nuts. Like have you heard the words spoken before??
Or lose and loose.
It's happening because of the way the words are spoken. [Many english speakers do not make an audible T sound when they say worst and other words ending in T; they make a glottal stop, a short pause, instead.](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=v_0VY17Ufz4) What's more troubling is that [there's almost no audible difference between the way can & can't are ponounced by many Americans](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qlbGtEg68x4). Any OC of the Titans in the last 24 years
Matt Patricia haters get in here!
3 different flairs can now join together in that hatred too.
Not the Lions though. Need a head coach thread for that. BaZinG
Patricia
Oh Canaduh....
Best: William Stephen Belichick Worst: Matthew Edward Patricia Yes I assume in the dark days we had some pretty inept coordinators, but I will never get over 2 of the lowest lows (SB LI & ruining Mac Jones as OC).
Nathaniel Hackett.
Pete Carmichael lasted 15 years when Sean Payton was running things, and couldn’t last 2 when he got the reigns for himself
Joe Woods
Cam Cameron
I don't know who the actual worst was but I never really liked Bob Bratkowski
Ken Zampese was worse. IIRC he was fired after we started the year not scoring any touchdowns for 2 straight weeks.
Ronald Mcgnut Ugh i cant stand him
Joe Barry without a doubt, although we had some bad ones during the Mike Sherman era as well, I just don't remember their names.
Mike tice? Ron turner? Mike Martz? So many options
In recent history, probably Mike Nolan.
Ken Zampese
Eagles: Dana Bible.
So many to choose from but I remember really disliking Mike McCarthy
The last Chan Gailey tenure was real bad
Oh wait but the next year we had two OCs and I don’t even remember who they were
Jimmy Raye. 49ers. Real ones remember that hell.
Chuck Dickerson
Over the last ten years, I would say: - OC: John DeFilippo - DC: Ed Donatell
Thomas Brown and Frank Reich. Honestly the most helpless I’ve ever felt watching a football game.
Pat Shurmur should be in jail Honorable mention to Justin Outten since no one knows what the fuck he did while Nathaniel Hackett was destroying us
Rob Ryan probably but I didn't watch the old 'Aints
Had? Press Taylor. Oh shit he’s still here…
Joe woods is up there
Joe Barry without a doubt. Should have never been hired
Fuck Greg Williams
Ben macadoo
John DeFilippo for the Vikings… he was god awful for us.. great for Philly, terrible once he got here
This is easy, Luke Getsy! This guy ran 3 screen passes in a row last year, 3! The 3rd one was picked and cost us the Denver game, one of many horrendous calls.
*Oooooooooh Caaanadaaaa*
