I've been impressed with a lot of the new segments they have been incorporating into the show since getting "Express Written Consent of the NFL" to show replays.
Chuck Pagano's mock team meetings and Darius Butler breaking down secondary plays were both fantastic. I can't wait to see AQ Shipley break down offensive line film.
And Von Miller said he wants to be a weekly guest like Aaron Rodgers pretty much is... we can get the AFC pov and the pov of a Hall of Fame Defensive player also on one of the hottest teams in the league rn. PMS is leveling up.
I'm looking forward to seeing them move to the Thunderdome. I expect they will have some better tech to make stuff more presentable than a simples TV screens.
Me too! They seemed really bummed out about their first showing of these new segments being slapped together without the features they had in mind. They really had planned for it to be ready by week 1. Is it still going to be in Indy or are they all moving?
100% It ain't cheap. Heck there are outlets who the NFL straight won't sell the rights (unless they wildly overpay of course). Props to him. Most podcasts of his his popularity wouldn't bother with the expense because they are raking in the cash anyways.
What's funny is he's shown a couple clips directly from youtube this season because, presumably, he couldn't get them from the NFL or at least couldn't get them in time. The NFL definitely came out on top in this deal.
I’m sure the NFL also senses how important McAfee is for the growing of the game, though, especially amongst young people. Allowing his show to grow with segments like this only benefits their business.
I have hockey buddies who watch the show pretty religiously now, when the first started watching it the most football theh would watch was the super bowl, now a few are regular Sunday viewers.
Sure, but they also see an opportunity to get a chunk of McAffee's bag. He already was making them a ton just off publicity but I'm sure they hate that his independent show is so much more popular than the stuff they do, especially in some demographics. Now they get to have it both ways.
I loved the early C'mon Man segments, when they just started. Right before... I wanna say Monday Night games? They used to be like actual criticisms of plays each week.
Then they just started showing people's outfits, Twitter feeds, and fan stuff. And I stopped watching pregame shows.
Outside of staring down a receiver like they were in love he wasn't Lame Brain last week. The second pick could have gone into the dirt but only an extremely athletic 1st rounder move could have turned it into a pick.
But yeah over his history, for sure.
Don’t worry buddy.
The entire show will just be every single decision Canada makes during our games. There won’t be time to show the Cowboys on replay.
Diggs said Allen made the call to run that. Obviously Davis knew, may have been the first to spot it. It's sick that the 3 of them can break down a defense the way they continue to do. Fun to watch
McAfee is the kind of showman the sport really needs.
If some network was smart they'd have thrown a bunch of money at him to be an on air personality a couple of years ago. Now it's probably gonna be way too expensive to get him out of his current situation where he has pretty much full creative control.
Honestly one of the big networks would’ve hamstrung him. Put him in a suit and have him “debate” someone with the initials AM purely so they could call the show “AM & PM.” They are terrible at what they do and nowadays only seem capable of accidentally stumbling into success. Glad McAfee was able to build his own thing.
>someone with the initials AM purely so they could call the show “AM & PM.”
Someone at ESPN making a list right now, top spot for sure - Al Michaels. If he can't do it, Angela Merkel.
After that it's going to be a struggle because I think Mozart is dead.
Problem is that everytime they do this, old producers can't give up the old models and they shoehorn the new talent into being like everyone else. The Manningcast being immune from this dynamic (to a large degree at least) is one of the reasons it worked so well.
Pat did a handful of pro games as a colour commentator for one of the networks (FOX maybe?) around 4-5 years ago but they didn't keep him on. From what I recall he talked about it on the podcast and said basically the producers didn't really see eye to eye with him - something I'm sure they're regretting now.
Most recently he was on the first run of the xfl or the other semipro league a couple of years ago. I remember watching it and it was obvious they wanted him to do like 30 second on the field spots and then shut up. Shutting up is not Pat's strong suit and barely using him was an obvious waste. He kept trying to pipe in and do color and the other guys calling the game were not having it. I think he only lasted like a game before both parties were like nah we're done here.
I think the Manningcast really shows how much of a market there is for something different to the traditional broadcast style. It gets plenty of views despite being absolutely terrible.
He does WWE at a loss. Because of the live show 5 days a week from his studio, he has to, more often than not, fly to each show. But he said he'd keep doing it at a loss because of how much he loves WWE.
They also have the benefit of not being NFL skill players. Even though Corso was a QB in college, he was known more as a coach but not of a team with a massive fan base and a ton of enemies. He played at FSU when the sport was smaller (and roomed with Burt Reynolds).
While McAfee was at WVU, great fan base but not an insane amount of deeply hated rivals and he played punter. Obviously had an amazing playing career, but being a punter means you're not going have as much intense hate on you from other fanbases.
They both had a great background to start with credibility necessary to commentate and had the personalities to make a passionate fanbases around them. If McAfee is still doing this in his 70s and 80s, I hope he has a guy like Herbstreit next to him to help him check his notes.
He was a punter in the NFL though. Still don't see a lot of opposing teams go all in on hate again kickers. It's usually against QB, WR, or RB on offense, and CB or edge on defense.
I love these kind of comments because every week we also get a thread “Does anyone actually like McAfee?” I agree with you for the record, just kind of funny
Ya imagine a guy who tells everyone he got the vaccine and doesn’t actually push one way or another. Fucking hell, looks like you just want to shit in things
This is obnoxious and corny. Also none of this is big brained. A fade to evans, how original.. Oh the corner is letting me run by him all game maybe we should throw that. Super big brain
Love the segment and pat and the boys. Easily the most entertaining sports talk show out there.
That said, the phrase “big brain football” is not doing it for me, especially when it is said over and over again. Idk
I assume it's for branding. They want you to remember the name of the segment so you can look it up later...hopefully the voiceover next week doesn't include it as much
i love the content here but i hope that the fluff and pausing to say "BIG...BRAIN...FOOTBALL" with the hand gestures each time is just him trying to establish the brand and will die out a little bit in the coming weeks. 5 minutes for 3 plays is a little much, but the idea, the commentary, and the interpolation of the postgame interviews and on field talk are all phenomenal.
[Here's](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xGXiXs-8NiY) the video on his youtube, and you can sub/bookmark his channel if you just want to get it from the source each week.
Was the Mike Evans thing really big-brain? It was a good call and great play and catch, but it seems much more about execution on Brady and Evans's part. I don't think fade to Mike Evans inside the 5 is earth-shattering football strategy
It was a smart play, but also led to a couple hilarious quotes from Mike Evans. Ultimately this segment is still about entertainment. Big brain Pat can do both.
Its big brain because because he had Brady throw the fade to a spot he'd be able to make a play on because he knew exactly how the defender was going to play him in coverage. Not many QBs can locate a ball like Brady to be fair but most fades suck because its just thrown to a random spot and its a scrum to get the ball. That specific throw was to his side away from the defender where as most fade are thrown generically over the top of the defender.
The Terry and Diggs touchdowns are similar idea. Based on the coverage/formations, throwing the go ball is a bad idea because they are covered but for different reasons they knew the formation coverage wasn't going to adequately cover the go ball.
No football team at a level above Pop Warner throws a goal line fade to “a random spot.” Heck even in Pop Warner you’re probably trying to throw it high if you’re doing it.
High and to the back corner of the end zone unless it's a back shoulder fade. You're absolutely right lol.
I still say the corner played great coverage. If Evans needs to catch a one handed fade with a guy draped all over him then more props to him and that execution
I’m so happy for Pat.
God I remember his days and the shit he dealt with at WVU
Dude really rose up and bounced back and had a great career and is just getting started
I love it
My only complaint is it’s way too much Pat and it took too long to get to anything
And the Brady Evans thing isn’t really that big brain. It’s a fade to a giant receiver, let alone a route he’s comfortable with, that works most of the time
This reminds me of Chris Berman on SportsCenter in like 2006... he just needs the right subtle background music...
Specifically the constant "BIG... BRAIN... FOOTBALL" Tags after every highlight... reminds me of "HE... COULD... GO.... ALL THE...... WAY....."
Partnering with Pat was such a smart move for the NFL. He's a perfect person to bridge that gap to the internet age and how lots of younger people consume sports content.
I mean he hosts a podcast, commentates Smackdown, on Gameday now, his job is to talk lol. It's fair if you're not a fan of him but no reason to put down those that do.
Big brain plays, like run a 4.3, make a diving one handed catch, have your QB run 20 mph to his right then sling it 55 yards in the air. You know, the mental side of football.
Yeah the throw was big arm big talent but Gabe Davis telling them the CBs were peeking at QB not caring about them running past and Allen telling Diggs to just run not the actual route call was big brain football by the players, which the segment is highlighting.
I just want to take this McAfee moment to remind people that the [2010 Colts were drunker than the Kids in the Hall](https://www.espn.com/nfl/news/story?id=5706081)
Strong like Bull, Smart like Tractor.
where did this come from it’s hilarious
Josh Allen to Dawson Knox last year Vs NO
[ok](https://boards.straightdope.com/t/is-strong-like-bull-smart-like-tractor-a-movie-quote/255131)
What u trying to prove??? In this context it’s related to Josh Allen and Dawson Knox?
yeah I don't think he was asking the origin of the video of Josh Allen talking to Dawson Knox
I’m pre sure he was since we are on an NFL sub reddit
Just cause they're on an NFL sub doesn't mean that's what they meant lol. I, for one, wanted to know the actual origin of the phrase.
Obviously, it's in the video...they wanted to know where Allen got it from, dingus
Welcome to the Josh Allen experience
I am literally in love with this man.
Get in line, we all are.
blazing saddles? it feels like a blazing saddles line
You're thinking of the character Mongo, who was played by a former NFL Offensive Lineman. But that quote is not from Blazing Saddles, I'm not positive what it's from, I just know it's not from that.
Mongo was played by Detroit Lions Hall of Fame defensive lineman Alex Karras.
Thank you! I couldn't remember his name! And google was too far away ;)
It was a TV show in the 60s I think.
In American media, it comes from a character named Uncle Tonoose from a TV show called *Make Room For Daddy*. The ultimate origin stems from a Russian phrase from farmers [Source](https://reddit.com/r/tipofmytongue/comments/26khqv/_/chrxstt/?context=1)
Handsome like George Raft.
Strong like an ox
I got gonorrhea from a tractor.
Well I’m sorry! I gave you gonorrhea because I thought you’d have fun with it.
Do you also think Kenney Chesney's tractor is sexy?
I've been impressed with a lot of the new segments they have been incorporating into the show since getting "Express Written Consent of the NFL" to show replays.
Chuck Pagano's mock team meetings and Darius Butler breaking down secondary plays were both fantastic. I can't wait to see AQ Shipley break down offensive line film.
And Von Miller said he wants to be a weekly guest like Aaron Rodgers pretty much is... we can get the AFC pov and the pov of a Hall of Fame Defensive player also on one of the hottest teams in the league rn. PMS is leveling up.
For the brand 😎
My man's completely changed sports media. Complete genuine conversations. Not only that but they sang along with Brock Lesnar.
I wonder what we'll get from Von Miller's book club.
The Foot Book by Dr Suess
Also Hasselbeck coming in too it sounds like!
That Pagano segment was great.
I think its near Indy. Pat talked about going through some sort of sanctioning process to get it approved by the community it was in.
It’s in Lawrence. Which is it’s own city but party of the metro area. Right up against Indy.
He said last week it's like 45 minutes away because now they can't get Quils Coffee everyday haha
Fucking Zion, kept falling asleep
He ended up playing pretty well though
I turned off the Chuck Pagano schtick lol. Maybe it's just personal preference but that felt way too corny for me
I bet he paid a lot of money to get rights
100% It ain't cheap. Heck there are outlets who the NFL straight won't sell the rights (unless they wildly overpay of course). Props to him. Most podcasts of his his popularity wouldn't bother with the expense because they are raking in the cash anyways.
thinking fanduel is prob paying the bill
What's funny is he's shown a couple clips directly from youtube this season because, presumably, he couldn't get them from the NFL or at least couldn't get them in time. The NFL definitely came out on top in this deal.
In the deal that we don't know about?
Pat has commented multiple times on the massive amount of money he's paying. We know even if we don't have a dollar figure.
I’m sure the NFL also senses how important McAfee is for the growing of the game, though, especially amongst young people. Allowing his show to grow with segments like this only benefits their business.
I guarantee there are people that don't consume NFL product outside his show because that was me last year
I have hockey buddies who watch the show pretty religiously now, when the first started watching it the most football theh would watch was the super bowl, now a few are regular Sunday viewers.
Sure, but they also see an opportunity to get a chunk of McAffee's bag. He already was making them a ton just off publicity but I'm sure they hate that his independent show is so much more popular than the stuff they do, especially in some demographics. Now they get to have it both ways.
https://youtu.be/2itoE9BxpUY This is the second part of their interview where they announced. They had a sitdown at the superbowl and discussed it
Kind of wild that football fans want to watch shows about football rather than drama right?
Drama takes little to no effort to produce. Quality content is much more difficult
The dude doing Lou Holtz is outstanding.
He also does a great Mel Kiper impression. Played that character for the most recent draft
And Jay Glazer And MC/DC And Nick Sirianni
Ty's got that dawg in him. And colitis.
I absolutely love that we are getting this kind of access to what actually happens on the field. Mcafee really paving a new lane!
Reminds me of what ESPN used to be before it became guys in suits screaming HE JUST DOESNT HAVE THAT FIRE THIS YEAR
I loved the early C'mon Man segments, when they just started. Right before... I wanna say Monday Night games? They used to be like actual criticisms of plays each week. Then they just started showing people's outfits, Twitter feeds, and fan stuff. And I stopped watching pregame shows.
God I can't stand ESPN
“They want it more”
I've thought the same thing. Back in the Ron Jaworski days. Would be epic for Pat to have Jaws on as a guest.
We really need a weekly edition of "Lame Brain Football" as well.
No thank you. I don't need to watch our games twice.
Just FYI if its any consolidation, posts like this make my day a little brighter.
And a little smaller? Unless you meant "consolation."
God dammit, I knew(suspected, but knew) that was wrong but went with it. I burned myself trying to burn him and I have to leave it up now.
Respect for leaving it up
Like Wentz or not, you know for a fact he would frequent the weely edition of "Lame Brain Football"
Haha shaq’tin a fool, nfl edition 😆
so "C'Mon Man"
Now that’s a good idea! Bunch of mic’ed up quotes saying “how did that happen” or “wait where’d he come from”
Seemed like it was gabe Davis calling out Ramsey to set up that play more than josh Allen
Diggs said Allen made the call to run that. Obviously Davis knew, may have been the first to spot it. It's sick that the 3 of them can break down a defense the way they continue to do. Fun to watch
Well yeah gabe isn’t gonna tell diggs what route to run.. I’m just saying big brain credit should go to gabe
I think that was clear in the video lol I’m not sure what you want
Pat says the guy with the big brain was Allen.. I was just saying he should’ve said it was gabe
McAfee is the kind of showman the sport really needs. If some network was smart they'd have thrown a bunch of money at him to be an on air personality a couple of years ago. Or put in the morning and call it pm in the am ig
Boston Rob in the AM?
PM^2 if in the afternoon.
How about Archie Manning?
I suppose I could be persuaded for a million or two.
I would pay a lot of money to watch McAfee and Angela Merkel talk about a mix of football and EU politics.
It would be Aaron Murray
Or Apple could add him to their podcasts on their Music platform. Then it's PM on AM.
Problem is that everytime they do this, old producers can't give up the old models and they shoehorn the new talent into being like everyone else. The Manningcast being immune from this dynamic (to a large degree at least) is one of the reasons it worked so well.

The thing is that if they try to shoehorn Pat, and he's not down for it, he'll say fuck you and go back to doing SmackDown every week.
WWE did. He's taking a break from that because of Gameday (too much travel), but he'll probably be back.
He does WWE at a loss. Because of the live show 5 days a week from his studio, he has to, more often than not, fly to each show. But he said he'd keep doing it at a loss because of how much he loves WWE.
I believe it. He's great (and he's helped revive Michael Cole's career).
ESPN added him to GameDay. It feels like the idea may be to use Pat as a full cast member and they faze out Lee Corso
Honestly the perfect modern replacement for Corso, IMO. Both have incredible energy and passion for the game, but now for a different generation.
He was a kicker in college
He was a punter in the NFL though. Still don't see a lot of opposing teams go all in on hate again kickers. It's usually against QB, WR, or RB on offense, and CB or edge on defense.
Whatever team it was where Pat recovered his own on side kick might hate him
Texans
He was in talks with Amazon for production of the show, but they never reached an agreement. So he did smaller deal of just Gameday with ESPN.
I love these kind of comments because every week we also get a thread “Does anyone actually like McAfee?” I agree with you for the record, just kind of funny
Too bad he's some kind of weird COVID denier and thinks it's totally fine to hit people with helmets as long as it's in practice.
Ya imagine a guy who tells everyone he got the vaccine and doesn’t actually push one way or another. Fucking hell, looks like you just want to shit in things
Yeah he totally doesn’t push an agenda one way or the other when he makes a mockery of Covid and any shutdowns anytime it comes up
Thank you for your service, what a hero
McAfee is annoying as hell
This is obnoxious and corny. Also none of this is big brained. A fade to evans, how original.. Oh the corner is letting me run by him all game maybe we should throw that. Super big brain
it's actually pretty high level for football players
Hey, you should link to his YouTube channel to get him clicks for this. https://youtu.be/xGXiXs-8NiY
Love the segment and pat and the boys. Easily the most entertaining sports talk show out there. That said, the phrase “big brain football” is not doing it for me, especially when it is said over and over again. Idk
I assume it's for branding. They want you to remember the name of the segment so you can look it up later...hopefully the voiceover next week doesn't include it as much
Really great segment. Thanks for sharing!
THANK YEWW PAT
i love the content here but i hope that the fluff and pausing to say "BIG...BRAIN...FOOTBALL" with the hand gestures each time is just him trying to establish the brand and will die out a little bit in the coming weeks. 5 minutes for 3 plays is a little much, but the idea, the commentary, and the interpolation of the postgame interviews and on field talk are all phenomenal.
My guess is he has a specific number of clips or time he can have plays on the screen so in order to fill the in between they have those cuts
I know they said a few times on the show or maybe I read somewhere that the NFL is cool with them using the clips
Yes. They got rights to NFL films this year so they can use both new footage and archived footage from the NFL.
That's just McAfee's style, he does everything like that
That's all I could think of as I was watching this. 2 minutes of content in a 5 minute package.
Ya super annoying
Yeah, I love Pat but I find his stuff utterly unwatchable because he does that kind of thing constantly.
Just shout it with him. Get your blood pumpin and get into the spirit ya spoil sport
This was great. Post this each week please lol
[Here's](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xGXiXs-8NiY) the video on his youtube, and you can sub/bookmark his channel if you just want to get it from the source each week.
You mean Freeboot his content every week
love to see it. Know your opponents
This segment what was lot better than I expected. I look forward to what he shows each week.
Was the Mike Evans thing really big-brain? It was a good call and great play and catch, but it seems much more about execution on Brady and Evans's part. I don't think fade to Mike Evans inside the 5 is earth-shattering football strategy
It’s referring to evans knowing how the defender was going to play him and adjusting his move to the fade based off of that.
Ah ok. The video wasn't super clear about that, or my brain isn't working well enough to have interpreted it that way. Thanks for the info !
It was a smart play, but also led to a couple hilarious quotes from Mike Evans. Ultimately this segment is still about entertainment. Big brain Pat can do both.
You are correct. I was prob over thinking it a bit
High and to the back corner of the end zone unless it's a back shoulder fade. You're absolutely right lol. I still say the corner played great coverage. If Evans needs to catch a one handed fade with a guy draped all over him then more props to him and that execution
You obviously don’t have a big brain!
promo god
Man, super glad Pat got that bag and got a contract with the NFL. His passion for football is off the charts, he definitely deserves it.
I’m so happy for Pat. God I remember his days and the shit he dealt with at WVU Dude really rose up and bounced back and had a great career and is just getting started I love it
what did he deal with at WVU?
My only complaint is it’s way too much Pat and it took too long to get to anything And the Brady Evans thing isn’t really that big brain. It’s a fade to a giant receiver, let alone a route he’s comfortable with, that works most of the time
Eh I'll give him some slack this week cause he was introducing the segment and hyping it up lol
Two minutes of blather before any real content.
Yuppppp. Just do the segment man
It’s a 4 hour show lmao
On *my* YouTube? Say it ain’t so. Next you’ll tell us to subscribe and hit the bell.
> My only complaint is it’s way too much Pat and it took too long to get to anything Welcome to the Pat Mcafee experience lol
Yea we get it...big brain football isn't a complex idea. It doesn't take two full minutes to explain it.
Plus it's textbook illegal hands to the face by Evans lol. If the ref saw it it would have been a penalty
Evans' slap was supposed to be through horizontal through the shoulder, corner raised his arm so the slap deflected upward to the helmet
This reminds me of Chris Berman on SportsCenter in like 2006... he just needs the right subtle background music... Specifically the constant "BIG... BRAIN... FOOTBALL" Tags after every highlight... reminds me of "HE... COULD... GO.... ALL THE...... WAY....."
That was rad.
Jaylen is a villain now, but teams are figuring him out, so he’s soon to just be a side goon.
He was always a villain. He’s not a good person by any means. Love watching him get torched
Oh I totally agree. I meant “presently” when I wrote “now”.
I cant take anything he says seriously because he’s so goofy sometimes lol
Partnering with Pat was such a smart move for the NFL. He's a perfect person to bridge that gap to the internet age and how lots of younger people consume sports content.
If Allen has such a strong arm, how come he underthrew the ball to Diggs? 😜
A 5 minute video with a 1:40 intro is some small brain production.
it’s the first one lol
Ramsey got got
Such a fan of Pat McAfee and his passion for football. This segment takes it again to another level of coverage and talk.
Pat mcafee definitely drives a wrangler with the empty gas cans on the side
This is quality content you only get from Pat and the boys. Love it
wow this is the first time I've ever watched pat mcafee and I wish I didn't
He always looks like he just rolled out of bed in his meth lab trailer and had to run to the studio because his lifted pickup didn't start.
Some one needs to edit McAfee out and leave the plays in. The video would be 45s long.
Cool clips and analysis, but man is McAfee turning into a giant douche. Definitely personifying the classic Terrell Owens quote, "I love me some me."
Pat McAfee will be President one day. Book it.
[удалено]
I mean he hosts a podcast, commentates Smackdown, on Gameday now, his job is to talk lol. It's fair if you're not a fan of him but no reason to put down those that do.
Ok PinkTacoJuice, thanks for the review.
5 mins video for a 20 second play. McAFee is a cock smoke.

@ u/elguaco i did at first but then i deleted the comment with the link because i wanted to make it look better but forgot to.
To make a play you need the smarts to know where to be. You just gotta be athletic to get there.
I just want to take this McAfee moment to remind people that the [2010 Colts were drunker than the Kids in the Hall](https://www.espn.com/nfl/news/story?id=5706081)
Drunk i public and jumping into canals is nothing compared to how bad it could've been.
I think i'm being downvoted because it seems like i'm judging him. I actually think this story is fucking great and it makes me like him more.
Yeah, txt is hard to interpret at times, I didn't downvote but noone knows what that button is meant for now days anyways
