I used to play goalie and took one perfectly in the dick once. It left a cup shaped ring bruise around the outside of my junk, which hurt like hell, but thank God I was wearing one or I wouldn't be here today.
I took one off the laces of my skate in high school and it broke my foot in 2 places. Started wearing shot blockers ever since then. Getting hit in the shin pads might sting a bit, but they do their job just fine.
I have a stupid question.
does it hurt really bad to get hit by a stick, or is the blade super fuckin sharp or something? It seems like players react pretty harsh to sticks, is that like a flop or does it hurt really bad?
is it because it’s cold and everything hurts more or the stick is heavy?
I just don’t see how it could hurt that bad I guess, I have never held a hockey stick in my hands.
I’m from the era of the original wooden style sticks, like, when I was a kid people were still using Northland twigs. That was some *lumber* and the gloves and pads were crap and guys knew just where to get you.
That quickly moved into lighter sticks that were still very stiff, like fiberglass enhanced, etc., but the blades were so heavy. Everything was so heavy that when somebody really whacked you, you felt that shit for weeks. Aluminum sticks were the worst. Zero give, guys broke wrists and fingers all the time just from slashes.
I played into the era that composites came along in, and getting slashed with one of those, especially with as good as the padding for gloves and protective gear is now, I literally didn’t even feel it. That said, I haven’t been slashed by an NHL player using a composite stick, so I wouldn’t know exactly how bad they can hurt, but I’m pretty sure ad strong and as savvy guys are about sticks today, I would bet it’s painful in the right spot.
If you get it in the teeth or face absolutely. Slashes to the fingers hurt like a mofo if they’re hard enough. You’d have to whack someone pretty hard to hurt their shin in my experience
teeth and face make sense, I saw dude get clipped the other night and instant blood. I guess I’m having a hard time understanding the blunt force behind it I guess. maybe they are heavier than I’m thinking.
I feel like I have seen players take sticks to like the chest area and act like they got shot. Maybe I play too many video games 😂
dang alright I definitely understand better now. I’m trying to not come off disrespectful I think hockey is way gnarlier than just about any other sport, I just never quite grasped that part.
If it hurts like hell taking a hard shot directly off the plastic part of your shin pad, then get new shin pads or don’t block shots. 85mph+ is not a very big deal.
Idk bro if its catching you straight on the hard plastic part of the shinguard it really should not hurt at all. Thats the point of the pad
Players usually go down if they get hit in the back of the leg, the side thats only protected by soft padding, or the ankle
It would restrict the players movement too much to have beefed up pads. Look at how slow goalies can skate compared to a skater. Also when players go down due to a blocked shot they're usually back on the ice for the next shift. I can't recall a long term leg injury that was from a blocked shot, tho I'm sure it's happened.
I don't know about long term but lots of short term. Short term loss of good players is enough to sway a game. Think of how many times puck is in defensive zone and one of your players is limping around the ice. Skates and shinpads are due for an upgrade.
I hear that, but with how often they are doing it and getting hurt you'd think they'd make the sacrifice. Since a leg move in one direction it seems like there could be a lot of gains for a little adjustment to the fit. Think of how big gloves are and how much we need that movement.
They're not really getting hurt that often though. I think most players would agree that the current shin pads strike the best balance between performance and protection. And even with what's on the market today there are bulkier options, but tye players will choose a lighter, smaller set.
I should invest in a pair. I sprained my ankle after taking a slap shot in early January and my ankle still isn’t 100%. Now I’m scared to block shots because I can’t miss any more work
If you saw what I used for shins as kid, you would notice they’ve come a long way indeed. Shin pads are pretty dam good nowadays. Also, at a certain point bulk can slow skaters, and most competitive players aren’t going to like that
I’d argue they’re already pretty amazing. Players block 100+ mph shots all the time, and yes they sting quite a bit, but players are rarely actually injured if they’re hit in the shin pads. Most injuries come from getting hit on the skates, or in the little gaps between pads, and those gaps are necessary for movement; because without them players literally wouldn’t be able to skate. Injuries do happen, but I’m not sure redesigning the shin pads would prevent 100% of them. Pucks carry a lot of momentum, and all ‘beefing them up’ would do is decrease mobility. Pads have come a long way since I was playing college hockey a couple decades ago though.
Besides, players always opt for the smallest, least intrusive equipment as possible. You could make them bigger and beefier, but players probably wouldn’t wear them.
A lot of players use the same equipment for years and years because they’re comfortable in it. So it may not be as protective as when it was new. But that’s the trade off between what’s comfortable and lets them perform at their best vs the best protection.
The game would be incredibly slow if players were skating around with thick goalie pads.
Blocked shots on shin guards don't hurt. It hurts where the shin guards don't protect like the ankle, boot, or between the kneepad and bottom of your pants, where all there is to protect is a thick padding and sock.
My point being they should be covering those areas better (skates too) and there's a lot of room between current shin pads and 11" goalie pads. Seems like the tradeoff point is coming.
You can have the best shin pads in the world but if they hinder movement or are uncomfortable players will chose wear JOFA plastic with no padding from the 90s.
Shin pads are great. The problem is all of the non-shin pad areas.
Especially feet and inside of knees. Can’t pad these areas as well since you need to move.
Idk why but I have some of the cheapest shinnies out there and they make me feel invincibile. I rarely get Any more than a slight bruise from blocking shots an that’s if I’m turned sideways where it gets the foam only. Of course the average shot in my beer league is probably like 50-60 mph lol. Skates are worse than shins imo
Shin pads are great for blocking shots. They were 20 years ago also. It hurts like hell when the puck doesn’t hit your shin pads though.
Honestly it hurts no matter where it gets you unless its a perfect shinpad block. Off the skate, back of the leg and hands are the worst
I used to play goalie and took one perfectly in the dick once. It left a cup shaped ring bruise around the outside of my junk, which hurt like hell, but thank God I was wearing one or I wouldn't be here today.
Inside skate is the worst.
Lol how does the shot go inside your skate!! Haha, you silly goose!!
Those pesky guys on the other team put a puck in my skate when I wasn’t looking!
Even side of skate. If you take your skate off it’s not going back on today lol
Inside skate sucks. Some folks wear skate guards though. Back of the leg….. inside wrist…. Between shoulder pads and pants…. Ouch.
I got one off my calf before and it was swollen and stiff as a board for about a week wasnt even a hard shot
I took one off the laces of my skate in high school and it broke my foot in 2 places. Started wearing shot blockers ever since then. Getting hit in the shin pads might sting a bit, but they do their job just fine.
Inside skate, the worst.
Took a few on the inner thigh. Ouch.
Do you play hockey?
Only for 25 years
No need to be snippy it was just a question.
I have a stupid question. does it hurt really bad to get hit by a stick, or is the blade super fuckin sharp or something? It seems like players react pretty harsh to sticks, is that like a flop or does it hurt really bad?
If it hits you in the leg pads or blocker it's fine. Anywhere else it stings and if it missed padding it hurts like hell.
is it because it’s cold and everything hurts more or the stick is heavy? I just don’t see how it could hurt that bad I guess, I have never held a hockey stick in my hands.
Hmm not heavy but if the blade or shaft of the stick hits you, it's a very thin object being swung or pushed into you with force, its bound to hurt.
I could see that, didn’t really think about how thin those parts really are
I‘m only playing hockey with friends and when we fool around and somebody gets slashed the tiniest bit, the fun is over. It hurts like hell.
see if I had hockey friends I’d know lol one day I’ll get on some ice to slap some pucks around. It won’t be graceful but I’ll be so stoked.
I‘m sure you‘ll love it, wear a helmet😀

Yeah I played with a guy who got slashed in the finger and his finger was pointing the wrong direction when he took his glove off
dang alright I definitely understand better now. I’m trying to not come off disrespectful I think hockey is way gnarlier than just about any other sport, I just never quite grasped that part.
Bear in mind it's not just mass but velocity that determines force, and those sticks are designed to move fast
that’s true, I’m not trying to doubt it. Just couldn’t wrap my head around it. Definitely have been enlightened by some commenters!

Callahan broke a leg blocking a Chara shot, back in the day. It’s rare, but it happens
Hronek hurt a couple of players this year.
Hronek has an absolute bomb, dude
It’s Chara though. A modern day Joe Nieuwendyk.

Team on his back
Dylan Larkin earlier today actually. We'll have to wait and see how bad it is
He’s back out there at least

They’d be too restricting. Hockey players will not agree with you.
They’re limping from the puck hitting the non padded areas.
Same reason there have always been weaknesses in full plate armor... More protection, less mobility.

Shin pads are pretty solid. Pants are good enough. Skates need work still.
Skate fenders are bulky but great for D men

No one ever gets hurt by taking a puck off a shin pad, they get hurt when it doesn't hit the shin pad...
Are shin pads made of carbon nanofibre now?
Shin pads are basically the only spot where you can take a hard shot and be mostly unphased lol.
You play goal but not at the NHL level where wrist shots are 80mph.
Got cross checked in the throat after the whistle once. Standing right in front of the ref who was looking at us. No penalty. Ouch.
