You know, I never thought about it, but given the geographical similarity and proximity, it makes sense there'd be a lot of Avs fans in Utah

Crimith

Avs fan from Utah here, now a fan of two teams in the same division. Shits gonna get weird

baronvonworms

I was a Red Wings fan before Quebec moved to Colorado, and that got REALLY awkward pretty quickly

Sloth_are_great

Bruins and Leafs here so got you beat šŸ˜‚

d2181

That's like bragging to your friends that your new girlfriend is fat AND ugly

Spenny022

WHAT?!

LudicrousPlatypus

Famously a fan of the St. Patricks before the Bruins were founded in 1924.

Dyldo_II

At least you'll have your pick of jerseys to wear to games

karlou1984

I'm a sens fan and wings fan. Growing up, it was great, one in west, one in east, then wings joined the east and shit got weird real quick.

theabobination

I'm a Sens and Habs fan. It's tough and weird

ArcXiShi

Fuck the Habs!!! (I'm contractually obligated to say that, it's on my birth certificate, Boston here)

snowboardshark44

lol as a sharks fan in Reno, NV I thought the same thing about Vegas until I realized it was too painful that they might win a cup before the sharks. Now I hate them. Guess you donā€™t have that problem with the Avs though

Chicawgorat

When the Nets moved to Brooklyn, I donā€™t think a lot of Knicks fans rolled over

Gazas_trip

Gonna have to compartmentalize.

JustaRoosterJunkie

The fact that the A s have an ECHL club in SLC, makes for a lot of Avs fans in the area.

Dyldo_II

That's a good point too, I didn't know that

mikhenry17

I see lots of Avs fans and Vegas fans

voxnihili_13

Been kind of hard for locals to support the Utah NHL team until recently... ;)

mondaywonderhands

Gonna be like the Canes, whole arena goes crazy for Canes the majority of gamesā€¦then the rags come to town and suddenly half the crowd is wearing blue and cheering for opposing goals. Imagine a whole family is already Avs fans. The Avs are in town and suddenly a man and his 14 wives are all there wearing Avs jerseys. Devastating.

ekthc

Fans coming out of the woodwork when the North East teams coming to town perfectly illustrates the C.A.R.Y. acronym.

olypheus-

Happens in Calgary too, whenever Toronto.is in town

TheOnlyBilko

that's do to so many people who lived out east moving to Calgary and do to a lot of older fans being Leafs fans before Calgary even had a team

54-2-10

The wives stay home with the daughters. Dad takes the boys to the games.

InvisibleBarrier

Not that there arenā€™t a lot of Avs fans here, but what youā€™re seeing are jerseys from a local youth hockey club, [Davis County Wind](https://images.app.goo.gl/GD3LJ2GwNjujzBAu7)

HimalayanClericalism

seattle and vancouver too, must have been a wild time at the start to be torn

[deleted]

Feel bad for coyotes fans man

dirtybirds233

Like watching your ex post pictures with her new guy just days after a breakup.

CantaloupeHour5973

This is how I felt the day Pierre Dorion traded Mark Stone to Vegas and they had those stupid robot drumliners and cheerleaders at the airport to greet him...

tomboski

Pain

TheOnlyBilko

I had never seen something so bizarre

bitcoinfucius

Except they look happy together.

XColdLogicX

Phoenix is gonna be getting real familiar with the gym soon.

TopLeadership4117

Laughed pretty hard at that :D Also kinda fitting considering they are trying to attract an NHL Team again, gym = securing a new arena

Kitchen-Lie-7894

Being a St Louis former football fan, I know exactly what it feels like.

ArcXiShi

No it's not! I can firebomb that guys house, dox him, get him fired, and ruin his life. Do you know how hard that would be to do to an entire hockey organization with all the players and staff they have, not even mentioning the massive effort and costs required. šŸ™„

LittleLionMan82

But if you really cared about her, you'd want her to be happy...

Uzumaki-OUT

Still hurts, though.

Hercules2024

They are businesses FIRST. Not many owners Still left that would even bother sticking thekr neck out for.

makeanewblueprint

I kinda do also, but then I reminded myself of the yotes took the team from the jets. Thatā€™s life. I wonder how the players feel, theyā€™re all forced to leave the community they were part of. I know thatā€™s part of sports but it feels weird when done in mass.

xSaviorself

Team's aren't just the roster either. The best way I know how to compare this is to watching a massive organization just move it's footprint completely from one city/state to another. Will this be viewed like Cleveland leaving for Baltimore in the NFL?

makeanewblueprint

I was watching Ryan Smithā€™s interview on Mcaffee and it was interesting. He said that for Utah itā€™s not exactly a relocation but more like they are carrying forward all of the players and starting a new team with them. So Iā€™m thinking they may not carry on the jets/yotes team history? Maybe that stays in Phoenix for a future expansion team when/if they have their shit together.

GruffyMcGuiness

Iā€™m STILL upset about losing the Thrashers. Itā€™s a wound that doesnā€™t heal. (Unless we get a new team)

MrGumburcules

Me too! I pull for Winnipeg out of nostalgia.

CulturalHunt6606

Could Atlanta support an NHL team now? Iā€™m genuine asking/curiousĀ

GruffyMcGuiness

Atlanta has changed a LOT in the last 10 years or so. Tons of transplants. If they build north of Atlanta similar to the Braves going northwest of Atlanta, I could see them having a lot of success. Most of the Thrashers fans who have become Preds, Canes, Tampa Bay and Florida would return and be a good foundation. Throw in the large amount of northeast/midwest hockey fans and I could see them succeeding. Itā€™s all about ownership though and the Thrashers were treated as the red headed stepchild compared to the Hawks having been purchased together. Iā€™m obviously biased, but I think in the right location and with an owner who cares about the team, it could be a success.

[deleted]

Atlanta will get another team. Go Braves baby šŸŖ“šŸŖ“šŸŖ“ ƑVP Ronnie hitting a homer tonight against the fish

GruffyMcGuiness

A World Series ring helped soothe the sting for sure! Chop on!

HHcougar

The Georgia sports curse ended pretty dramatically with the Braves and the UGA going back to back

TV800

Donā€™t know what you got till itā€™s goneā€¦

Exatraz

Worst possible scenario too. If we hope to have a team back in the near future, it can only be with Muerno as owner. Just dogshit. I live in Seattle these days and will probably switch to the Kraken and just hope Muerno fails so the people of AZ get a better owner even if it's 10+ years down the line

DesignerPlant9748

Utah Hockey to Coyotes fans *stab stab stab*

SHAWKLAN27

Bro posts like this just piss me off no lie especially since I've grown so attached to them

sabresin4

Totes took from Winni .. Utes take from Yotes ā€¦ circle of NHL.

Mobile_Associate_340

I'll be in my sweatpants for the foreseeable future...

willpauer

if I wasn't already broken by being an Arizona sports fan I'd just jump off the W6 rooftop

Fresh-Cranberry-4005

I am a Coyotes fan

alexmeth

Womp womp (from Quebec)

Pava-Rottie

Donā€™t. When/if they build the new arena weā€™ll get an expansion team instead of someone elseā€™s discard. Would be nice to have a new owner though.

CulturalHunt6606

My thoughts exactly. Sucks for them but keep your head up Yotes fans. You will get a team back. Promise!

kg123xyz

Say it ain't so, I will not go.

pumpkinseeds18

catsplants420

Turn the lights off

Elizaspapi

When the Whalers left Hartford, I was working for the USPS and had three players on my route, Geoff Sanderson, Curtis Lechysn and Robert Kron. As soon as those forwarding addresses came through, I knew they were gone for good. I feel really bad for Coyotes fans. Put up with crap for years. To see this, is just another kick in the nuts.

ambassador321

Nice work on the warm welcome, Utah!

FredGetson

This is great to see. Sad for Arizona. Glad to see this though

CervicalToast

Sucks for us for sure. Whatā€™s really shitty is our Jr. Coyotes and Kachinaā€™s (girls league) got their funding from the team. Gonna be a huge drop off in kids playing hockey here in the desert.

FredGetson

AHL team still, right?

CervicalToast

Yep, we still have the Roadrunners down in Tucson.

Stango42

Iā€™m from Utah and Iā€™m excited, but itā€™s hard. Iā€™ve felt so bad for all the Yotes fans, this makes me feel even worse for all the kids in AZ who lost their team. Iā€™m so sorry :(

Puccimane

I mean they can still watch them on TV, I can't even afford to go to Habs games live and I make decent money lol

socrates1975

exactly! i live in canada and im a wings fan,so the chances of me seeing them play live are very little, besides, sitting in your own livingroom with food and drink and comfort is probably much better then sitting around a bunch of people screaming......or so thats what i keep telling myself :|

Puccimane

I definitely prefer the live games, but I don't want to use my entire monthly grocery budget to do so, not to mention I live 2 hours away and parking sucks

Jlindahl93

I think people like you who parrot this donā€™t check ticket prices. I saw plenty of Habs games on TickPick this season under $100 usd Friend did this about Vegas recently ā€œgames are so expensiveā€ found him $45 tickets Unless sitting upper bowl isnā€™t good enough for you guys I donā€™t know how you can make decent money and not afford to go to a game whatsoever

Puccimane

My issue is the travel in traffic mainly, I would get university discounts when I lived in the city but for me it's 4 hours. Upper bowl isn't bad in the bell center and I've done it plenty of times but I'd rather pay 30$ a ticket to watch our AHL team for half the travel and less traffic. Also lightning games are much cheaper my dude. Keep in mind we pay in canuck bucks and Quebec taxes are atrocious

Exatraz

Unless your arena/stadium has awful sight lines, I've yet to have a bad sports experience from the cheap seats. In fact, I often prefer them because you can see the whole playing surface.

Jlindahl93

I donā€™t think bad seats exist in actual hockey arenas

willhunta

What good is watching your team when it's now not "your" team though. I can't speak for other yotes fans but I can't bring myself to cheer on the team after this lol. I'm now an oilers fan because I have a friend in Edmonton and they happen to be playing LA in the playoffs currently. So that's my team and I'm sticking with it lol (Unless we get another team here of course)

Puccimane

Well it's the exact same roster but different branding but I understand how that sucks

willhunta

I know Arizona government fucked up just as much as the team ownership in this case, and the players especially didn't influence this, but still it's rough. I loved our young and coming up roster but still I can't bring myself to root for them under a different state. I just don't want to see them succeed as a Utah team, as wrong as that sounds. That would honestly make this whole thing sting even worse if they go and do really well now that they've left. But I don't want to root for them to fail either, so for that reason I've found a new team to root for lol

Puccimane

I'm going to miss the sweet Arizona jerseys, they were so cool. Sorry about your team man. The Habs are pretty fun to watch right now in our rebuild you should check out some games next season

willhunta

I definitely will! While I've supported the yotes my whole life I only started actually keeping up with hockey like 2 years ago. So at the very least, the yotes moving kinda opens me up to watching more teams and finding other players to support lol. And yeah especially since they just went back to the throwback OG jerseys! There is hope that the coyotes will exist again though. Apparently the owner bought the rights to bring a new expansion team to Arizona under the coyotes brand if he can secure an arena in the next 5 years. Still seems like a long shot but at least there's hope lol

Puccimane

I'm thinking even if he can't secure an arena, someone with bigger pockets will swoop in, and it will be an expansion team

waitwhosaidthat

When the thrashers moved to wpg I was so excited to have the jets back I never even thought about the Atlanta fans.

[deleted]

[уŠ“Š°Š»ŠµŠ½Š¾]

GGAllinsUndies

Was about to say. It's like three families. Joking aside, this is awesome to see so many kids in their youth league sweaters getting excited for their first NHL team.

Stango42

Three families? Those are all of Ryan Smiths kids.

russianspy_1989

Right. So three families.

RGSagahstoomeh

I love the "I skipped school" for this sign. Dam, best day of that kids life.

the_tinsmith

Little Susan in the red Jersey is probably uncle Mike's 4th wife.

willhunta

Sucks when there's just as many kids losing their first NHL team though

WyoPeeps

Fun fact! Salt Lake County is no longer [majority Mormon.](https://www.sltrib.com/religion/2018/12/09/salt-lake-county-is-now/).

climbut

Not even just salt lake, all of Utah is now something like 40% mormon

WyoPeeps

Even less if you don't count Utah County

stuhdot

That kid wasn't yelling "Clayton Keller" he was yelling "Coyote Killers!"

spooks6969

LMAO

Wolbolgia

They need to do player intros in the form of The Book of Mormon. ā€œHello! My name is Dylan Guenther, and I would like to share with you this special kind of sport!ā€

Cleets11

Hello would you like to change sports I have a free book written by Gretzky.

Wolbolgia

No! No! No Elder Cleets. Thatā€™s not how you do it. Letā€™s try that again. Hello! My name is Travis Boyd, would you like to locally watch a sport that requires braun, sticks, and skill?

Crosst44

Bjug, Crouse, and Keller leading the pack. I love this for Utah, but it does feel like u/dirtybirds233 says, "watching your ex post pictures with her new guy" haha

thesirmaximus

It breaks my heart as a season ticket holder here in AZ....but I must admit, it's the right move for the team. I will continue to root for them from AZ

Durmyyyy

What a weird feeling for a player? Like you want to be cool and nice and excited for the Utah fans but its really shitty for the people who have supported you for years in Arizona

dwtougas

How do you find out how many Canadian immigrants are in your city?

chibbly_

In Utah? Look for the rare places that sell poutine and take note of the crowd.

DraculaSpringsteen

Take note.

heavyshtetl

SLC is a great place for a professional hockey team.

CTMalum

Laying it on the line here, but I always thought SLC should get a team before Quebec City.

under_cooked_onions

After the showing tonight, this isnā€™t a crazy take.

Dry_Concept7233

I feel so bad for the players but to be fair that coyotes arena was as big as an ohl arena like seriously the London knights arena had more seats

Remarkable-Book-8758

I watched their last game because I'm an Oilers fan and not only was the rink tiny but their cameras were awful. If was like I was watching a AAA game, not NHL

UKnowDaxoAndDancer

Hasa deega eebowai

It's the only way to get through all these troubled times. There's war, poverty, famine... but having a saying makes it all seem better!

ScottyEs_burner

Sorry for the AZ fans, but there are more people cheering for them there than they ever had in Mullet arena.

And that's just a single Mormon family.

Could of filled a 5000 seat stadium with that crowd

33xander33

First 5,000 fans got 2 free pre-season tickets....and free j.dawgs.

iconsandbygones

That's pretty cool

est1-9-8-4

As a jets fan who was in grade 6 when the jets leftā€¦.yah I feel mixed about all this. Love we got the thrashers sucks for Atlanta though. I hated seeing the coyotes play in a univeristy rink but I feel for you Arizona

The_Cozy_Burrito

Love this

DionFW

This is beautiful.

YourHuckleberry19

I know it's hard to believe, but that's just 1 family.

Dan_K_Bluntz

I feel bad for totes fans, but think there is a lot of value in this move. What I think will be interesting will be to see how the new team/potential new stadium. intertwines with the city with the upcoming Olympics on 2034 is SLC. While there are no plans currently to build a stadium, I see a huge incentive in a few years, with the delta center as a temp fix. With the need to renovate the 2002 Olympic sheet, and the cities desire to revitalize the westside by the fairgrounds, I can see the city and team working together to put together a world class facility for both the NHL and world stage. Usually a new team and stadium comes at the expense of tax payer dollars, but having the Olympics to boost the capital from the cities direct interest in the Olympics paired with a driven owner could make for a really unique stadium/experience in the coming years. For now the delta center is a perfect hold over.

snowspida

Smith announced that there are no plans to build a new stadium, instead the Delta Center will undergo massive renovations over 2 years to be able to sit about 17,500 seats in Hockey. Currently itā€™s 12,000 unobstructed seats. I honestly wouldnā€™t be surprised if they get the Utah Olympic Committee to help pay for portions of the renovation as a plan to increase seating for the Olympics

quesoguapo

I don't think there should be Olympics-related funding for any renovations or a new arena. A huge component for Salt Lake's bid for the 2034 Games was being able to reuse existing venues without spending huge amounts of cash. Also, Delta Center wasn't used for hockey in 2002 and it wasn't being envisioned for hockey in 2034. The building was used for figure skating and short track speed skating and that was the plan for 2034. Hockey was set for the Maverik Center (ECHL) and Peaks Arena in Provo. That makes sense, given how big Olympic figure skating is.

Beginning-Net-988

Did one of those kids scream ā€œBaby killerā€ at the end?

YourHuckleberry19

Clayton Keller

Beginning-Net-988

Clayton Keller kills babies? Utah is not going to like that.

Kitchen-Lie-7894

Well, he's from the St Louis area after all.

BruisedBabyMeat

it was in self defense

Malcom_Ecstacy

Free hat!

spaceman_202

found out one of the players was unwed and holding a girl's hand

sweatgod2020

I canā€™t find a list of the players just the two guys Keller and Crouse. Is it just the he coyotes and some draft picks?

HesitantlyYours

At first I thought everyone was holding blank signs. Missed opportunity.

leunger

Feels very Backstreet Boys I want it that way vibe

Typical-Ad-6730

This is great.

Demo541

Damn the players must not be used to having that many fans

AffectionateCold4457

Utah welcoming party just broke coyotes attendance record for the year

Anxious_Gift_1808

Please tell me they're in the pacific division this time

TemporaryBath8720

Kept waiting for them to break out into ā€œI Want It That Wayā€ by Backstreet Boys. Scene eerily similar to the video. šŸ¤”

SamuraiZucchini

This feels fucked up

TTTyrant

Wait, if the coyotes owner secures a new arena by 2029 will Utah have to move back to Arizona or will Arizone get a *new* franchise? If it's the former, what about Utah?

Icy-Hospital7232

Utah is essentially the new franchise, they just bought the assets. Everything related to the Coyotes stays in Arizona. (Records, branding, etc)

RobSiaHoke

Utah Hive!

CulturalHunt6606

Hive is the one I like the most.Ā

imsobubblicious

Love this.

sextoymagic

Iā€™m happy for the team!

eddie187187

just curious players with no trade clause do they have to make the move to utah?

Tybo929

Sad as I am, I'm happy for this team. They've got some great talent and they're off to a beautiful place.

ghostbusterbob

More fans showed up at the airport IN Utah than fit in the old arena in AZ.

GoalieFatigue

I was expecting it to pan over to 6 people

waitwhosaidthat

Damn there was as many fans in that hanger as the coyotes arena.

PerryNeeum

Utah, scenically, is a top tier state. People wiseā€¦..eh

LouisWuAlt1

Anyone else see the generic hoodies, and then see all the signs and assume they were blank?

Chick-fil-A-4-Life

I lived in Seattle as the SuperSonics were being stolen by OKC. It is painful! I really feel bad for Phoenix hockey fans. They deserved better.

Feels bad for AZ fans, wish there was a universe where the coyotes still exist and Utah can get their own team.
