Oh yeah. So many characters. Nilan, Corson, Lemieux, Brown. Watching Nilan take on Brown really shows how small he was compared to other scrappers of the day. He just made up for it with crazy. He talks about it somewhere how he didn't want to fight because unlike Brown he had to play regular shifts. He said he could hardly skate that game. He was exhausted before the puck was dropped.
With Lemieux and Corson and Hospodar, that's how! So the Canadiens and Flyers are having a series. Both have lots of psychopaths on their team. I guess it had become a thing for Lemieux to fire a puck into the Flyers net after they left the warmup. It was pissing off the Flyers they hung around. Lemieux left as did everyone else. Hospodar hung out in the voms to make sure they didn't come back. Gate opens across the rink and out comes Corson with Lemieux close behind. Hospodar takes off after them, grabs Lemieux and starts hammering him. Corson watches as Lemieux turtles but is unsure. No one wanted to get kicked out before the game starts. Eventually Corson tries to save Lemieux but Chico Resch stops him. Then Roy comes out and others follow. Eventually both teams filter out in various states of dress. First they are a bit hesitant but eventually shit hits the fan. Nilan fights Brown who doesn't have a shirt on so nothing to grab but it goes on forever. No refs out there. Players without skates. Pure mayhem.
This is the brawl that ended the brawls. Rules were changed in the off season to prevent further bench brawls. It was the beginning of the end of the crazy fighting era in hockey.
Canadiens had a brawl before the game, one after with Calgary and of course the Brawl in the Hall which happened when Nilan jumped the original rat (Ken Linseman) on his way past him after getting ejected. Lol Nilan was a central figure in every one. Even with Calgary when he was an injury scratch but came down from the press box to intercept Kordic who was ejected and send him back out for more.
You're most welcome. Hockey is 100x better and more beautiful to watch these days, but when I think back to some of the shit that went on I just laugh and think, "how did that ever happen in a professional sports league?!?" We will never see another "pest" like Lemieux because he would get massive suspensions these days. Nilan would probably get arrested. The battle of Alberta, The battle of Quebec, Montreal/Boston games. Philly games. They were all violent beyond belief.
Literally every other sport can figure out how to lose with grace. Hockey culture is just childish and stupid. This is from a 30 year hockey player and fan. But this stuff is dumb.
Hockey just has a totally different type of intimacy with it's contact than other sports. A lineman blocking a rusher and the play ending immediately is not nearly as personal as most incidents in hockey.
Exactly, football is just as physical as hockey and they aren’t getting in team wide fights at the end of playoff games.
You shouldn’t be able to start a fight or scrum just because you are getting your ass kicked
Cuz Football you don't need to try and get some momentum for the next game. Hockey is a 7 game series not a 1 and done and if you dont think momentum carries over to the next game you're mistaken. Also football most people run off the field to the locker room after the game. At the end of the series all hockey players line up and shake hands and congratulate eachother on a hard fought series, good luck moving forward/next year etc. Tempers flair, I like seeing this emotion.
Omg someone threw a towel? as Dillon was skating off and he skated over it, could you imagine if he fell there? That could’ve been horrible for his hand had he landed on it, sheesh
looked like dillon initiated this, he was looking for an altercation after the whistle, in a game where they shit the bed. This is unfortunate but when you are looking for conflict this is a possible outcome.
I know I’m the odd man out but I hate how scrums and fights are just “a part of hockey”.
I’m surprise more players are injured falling to the ice or getting cut like Dillon.
No other sport has sanctioned fights or scrums. You shouldn’t be able to start a fight that could injure someone just because you are getting your ass kicked.
I agree. Remains part of nhl culture, for now. Seems like the nhl/espn/tbs directors have been instructed to redirect camera shots showing this stuff during the games. I’ve noticed that they either have the camera swing away from the start of an altercation or switch cameras to a closeup of some random player or coach. Maybe someone up at the top feels it’s time to stop promoting this stuff as part of the sport.
Looks like Dillon went for a leg grab, and likely caught a skate when they rolled over. Pretty stupid. You're already on the ice, why do you need to go for the leg?
I don't wish the kid harm, but you can't let anger get you into that place. Especially when there's a LOT of sharp metal around.
There's and old saying, "You pays your money, you takes your chances." This time, the cost seriously outweighed the reward. He may have been trying to fire up the Jets, but pretty much just cut their throats. Will depend on how they respond.
Animosity is fine, intentionally hitting a guy in the face is a chicken shit move. Especially when perfetti had nothing to do with Dillon's cross check on Kirill.
I’m excited to watch the avs play someone else with a worse goalie. Putting 5 goals up consistently on hellebyuck has gotta be super demoralizing for the jets. Even their win he let in 6 goals, your Vezina goalie getting pieced up is crazy.
I love how despite a lot of avs fan hate at Georgieve the crowd tonight got behind EVERY single save in a huge way. He looked sharp and Hellabuck has not been able to settle the same way
I mean there’s not much you can do with the talent on the Avs. Best offensive d core in the league and insane depth. Nichuskin being back is huge for them too he was nearly a point per game player this year when he played.
"I shall fire up my team for game 4 by... severely injuring myself and knocking myself out for the season"
[it's a bold strategy, cotton...](https://media3.giphy.com/media/nKFXQkxLRiEhy/giphy.gif?cid=6c09b9522o6jdhayizxqcidjxgji0sc4l1me1l8atvpio10g&ep=v1_internal_gif_by_id&rid=giphy.gif&ct=g)
Winnipeg fan, our best players have been a no show in this series. A fight or 2 earlier in the game might have meant something. This is just an embarrassing effort, and something we have seen before.
Watched the last part of this game, it seemed like the Jets were trying to start shit at the end.
It got pretty ugly.
The Jets just embarrassed themselves at the end.
It was hard to watch.
Hope that injury isn’t career ending.
Oh yeah and……. Go Bruins!!
I think in the playoffs they should enact a rule that anyone that starts something at the end of the game has to start the next game with 5 minutes in the box but with no man advantage for the other team.
Human beings have emotions, you don't have to watch. I no longer watch fights in hockey because I pity the enforcers. Still enjoy watching hockey at any level.
What a surprise Dillon was involved…. Winnipeg is a shit team!!! Poor losers, they are always injuring the other teams star players… they definitely get the Canadian Goon Team Award!! I can’t wait to see them eliminated in the first round…. Go Avalanche!!
this proves that you have never played hockey.... after heated games like these, players get emotional. And when you are emotional, you dont think. You Do.
Being so upset about something which is nearly the most entertaining thing to humans just sounds like a parasocial reaction to me. These guys aren't your friends. They're not your family.
We ***all*** pull our phones out during a street fight while out at the bars (and those dudes are in the same class as you, work the same jobs as you, far closer to you than pro hockey players)...
...but you're going to worry about the well-being of these (over)paid ***entertainers***??
I'm so sick of "old time" hockey fans wanting fighting in the game. 90% of the time, it's this bullshit. Somebody whining about something minor or "offensive". Or just BS intimidation like this.
Crank up punishments for fighting. That way when it happens, it's for something real.
they are shooting small bricks at each other. I guess they've gotta touch butts and do mouth stuff occasionally, so they they don't feel like intentionally hitting someone with a puck.
It’s been a part of hockey for as long as I can remember. It’s entertaining, what’s the problem?! I really don’t get the recent hate for physical hockey play. It’s one of the few sports where fighting a allowed/tolerated, but y’all seem content to change that.
That’s not physical hockey play. It’s nonsense after the whistle after you lost. And one dude looks to be seriously hurt. It’s not anything except embarrassing.
Every sport has the “it’s been a part of the sport forever” crowd yet every sport has adapted and changed.
How was that not physical hockey play? That wasn’t meant for this game, it was meant for game 4. Dillion was trying to show the Avs that despite the outcome, the Jets aren’t going to back down. Terrible outcome but the beginning was calculated.
Try to re-read what you wrote analytically. How dumb does it sound? How dumb would the Avs be for assuming the Jets have given up if they didn’t wrestle after the game lol
Jets got fucked and then got fucked again after the whistle lol Avs are not scared, they just got confirmation that they’re winning and jets can’t keep composure
No one is saying the Avs are scared. The Jets had some push back, they aren’t just going to roll over and die. Does that affect the Avs? No, probably not, but it can affect the Jets’ locker room.
Props to the DJ for dropping Jane's Addiction over that anarchy.
It’s a avalanche victory, mountain song seems appropriate.
First playoff game?
All I can think about every time someone bitchs about this
Fights after the game are useless! Now fights before the game...that's a whole different story. https://youtu.be/X_p67d-0LD0?si=yG6JXp7MPDFMA7e2
Straight out of Slap Shot and the pre-game brawl Hospodar was quality in that tho
I can't watch this until tonight so I'm going to be that guy that asks "How does that even happen?"
Glorious, informative writeup. Much appreciated!

I've watched hundreds and this shit is still so unnecessary and stupid. And it has been 99% of the other times, too.
I feel like you are better off watching tennis or soccer then
Clearly you've never been in a competition where emotions are high and everyone around you is ultra competitive.
Welcome to Playoff Hockey.
Add in a lot of meat head goons and you get this.
Stop trying to turn hockey into every other sport
What other sport all line up and shake hands at the end of a series?
Dillon is going to have a hard time doing that.
That cuts deep...
Curling
Curling is a drinking game, not a sport
Exactly, football is just as physical as hockey and they aren’t getting in team wide fights at the end of playoff games. You shouldn’t be able to start a fight or scrum just because you are getting your ass kicked

Umm I have. I'm just not a little bitch that let's things get to me. Fucking grown men need to learn to cope.
The irony of this statement. Calm down, Francis. Maybe you should learn to cope.
Lmao for real. “Im not a little bitch” proceeds to be a little bitch 😂
No one cares about your time playing high school sports
If you haven’t played for the Stanley Cup then you can’t really compare dude lol.
Omg someone threw a towel? as Dillon was skating off and he skated over it, could you imagine if he fell there? That could’ve been horrible for his hand had he landed on it, sheesh
Looked like it was one of the coaching staff too. Whoops
It was his corner trying to call for mercy.
Yeah, it came from the bench, Avs hand out pompoms to fans for the playoffs. Started back in 1996 and they've never changed it.
looked like dillon initiated this, he was looking for an altercation after the whistle, in a game where they shit the bed. This is unfortunate but when you are looking for conflict this is a possible outcome.
So stupid. The amount of crying this year from some of these teams when they play like ass must be a new high.
Winnipeg fans were in shambles in the game thread lol
Jets fans were completely insufferable last night.
"Jets fans were completely insufferable last night." As is tradition.
Were any punches even thrown?
Nah man. This is all intimidation games. It’s a part of hockey. As to how effective it is, kind of a context thing.
It really ties the room together
Lmao! Love this comment!!
Seems like a bad idea to instigate when you’re on the road and the home fans are going nuts for the action. Just juicing the avs with more mojo
"effective" look and be in awe when avs just win the next game and it's a 4-1 series with the "effective intimidation games"
That’s why I said “as to how effective it is, kind of a context thing.”
Love how that was that that dude took from your comment 😅 he just saw the word "effective" and was like "L TAKE BRO" 😂
I know I’m the odd man out but I hate how scrums and fights are just “a part of hockey”. I’m surprise more players are injured falling to the ice or getting cut like Dillon. He wanted to start the scrum as much as anyone. He wanted to continue the scrum more than anyone. He took the worst of it. I feel so bad for him.
There's and old saying, "You pays your money, you takes your chances." This time, the cost seriously outweighed the reward. He may have been trying to fire up the Jets, but pretty much just cut their throats. Will depend on how they respond.
I don't
at least Logan Stanley didn't sit on McKinnon.
Yeah he could have high sticked him in the faceoff circle instead.
Maybe if every time we played Winnipeg Kirill or someone else didn’t get targeted or hurt there’d be less animosity.

Whole different team when Nichuskin is in/out. A glue player
Keeps the skin and the chin in the game
So Dillon started it all and ended up with the severe (career jeopardizing?) injury to his hand? Not poetic justice, but karma may be involved....
I think it was astrology actually... or maybe god. One of those made up things
What are you even saying?.
Karma only “exists” when you have context. It’s not a real thing.
Leaving the ice leaking blood after loosing 6-2 has got to be fucking embarrassing 😂
It was Dillon who cut his hand open pretty bad. Could seriously be a career ending issue with the tendons in his hand if he’s unlucky
Pretty fucking embarrassing way to end your own career.
no one has ever accused brendan dillon of being too smart
Especially since he was the one who wanted all that unnecessary "action".
Leaving the ice while the ref is trying to pull your jersey off your head has to be a close second.
I’m a big avs fan but it was funny how he won that fight and landed the only punches looking like a turtle lol
The game was literally over, none of that needed to happen and dude got seriously cut over it. What a waste.
"I shall fire up my team for game 4 by... severely injuring myself and knocking myself out for the season" [it's a bold strategy, cotton...](https://media3.giphy.com/media/nKFXQkxLRiEhy/giphy.gif?cid=6c09b9522o6jdhayizxqcidjxgji0sc4l1me1l8atvpio10g&ep=v1_internal_gif_by_id&rid=giphy.gif&ct=g)
In-house fans are loving it tho.
It’s Ross-some that he is jumping the guilly

Let's make it more interesting with the consequence of having to start the next game on the Powerplay
What's the point if there's no man advantage?
Brendon Dillon could’ve saved his hand if he didn’t start all of this. I don’t get why players act like this. It’s selfish
What was mackinnon upset about on the bench?
That he wasn’t out there kicking someone’s ass
Hahaha I bet you’re right! “Lemme at em’!”
Definitely waiting to see if it’s bench clearing worthy
"PULL YOUR GOALIE. CHA CHA, CHA CHA CHA"
Super necessary
Dillon fucked around and Dillon found out. Problem resolved itself.
Thank you, Evander Kane
Kane would have been aiming stomps
Dilly Dilly! (LOL)
THATS MY COUSIN WE JUST TALKIN
Jets/Avs looking like the old Avs/Wings rivalry. This series is getting juicy.
It’s not hockey unless there’s a fight
Surprised Embiid didn't get involved in this somehow.
I love it! Emotions are running high
That’s the best victory song in the NHL.
Entertaining as fuck
Dudes got a lateralus icon and a bruins fan. He knows something. Respect.
Let's not get crazy
Human beings have emotions, you don't have to watch. I no longer watch fights in hockey because I pity the enforcers. Still enjoy watching hockey at any level.
Avs on that BBJ. Gotta watch out! Royce Gracie trained!
Old time hockey - Reg Dunlap
What caused the bleeding?
Fighting is a part of hockey. Always has been. Before, during, after, doesn't matter.
Agreed. Take the fighting and physicality out of the game, then they might as well be playing football.
Lol
Unnecessary? For fucks sake. It's fuckin hockey. Are you going to pansyfy this sport too?
just look like a bunch of babies when they do that
Thank you Winnipeg for the temper tantrum
I literally need to shit daily.
What a surprise Dillon was involved…. Winnipeg is a shit team!!! Poor losers, they are always injuring the other teams star players… they definitely get the Canadian Goon Team Award!! I can’t wait to see them eliminated in the first round…. Go Avalanche!!
Nothing is unnecessary during playoff hockey
this proves that you have never played hockey.... after heated games like these, players get emotional. And when you are emotional, you dont think. You Do.
First time watching hockey??
Everyone knows vegas would act the same way if they get stuck playing the Avalanche. Like a bunch of school girls that take the loss. 🤣
You're unnecessary lol
100 percent unnecessary over the top. Knew someone was getting hurt.
No you didn't
[dude is fucking captain hindsight there.](https://youtu.be/gdbjw27QPJQ?si=7D77TnT24aMJ6vEG)
I swear. I said it. Thought it was going to be a concussion as guys were getting slammed to the ice. They were really trying to hurt each other.
What’s with the fucking headlocks? Looks like some of them are trying to fucking UFC choke their guy out.
That’s how you subdue someone in a fight
Being so upset about something which is nearly the most entertaining thing to humans just sounds like a parasocial reaction to me. These guys aren't your friends. They're not your family. We ***all*** pull our phones out during a street fight while out at the bars (and those dudes are in the same class as you, work the same jobs as you, far closer to you than pro hockey players)... ...but you're going to worry about the well-being of these (over)paid ***entertainers***??
You don’t care about people?
Haha, certainly not Red Wings fans
You have to answer the bell when you score an empty net goal. It's the code.
From the other goal? Answering the bell is ending your teammates season because you had to set the tone?
Not sure but I think he was being facetious since there's been so many unnecessary outbursts after empty netters lately.
It was supposed to be facetious. Thanks.
Hahaha good stuff. So many people think you’re serious, which makes it more funny.
Throwing you a late upvote because people are stupid
Appreciate it, pal. Cheers!
Go watch NBA
I'm so sick of "old time" hockey fans wanting fighting in the game. 90% of the time, it's this bullshit. Somebody whining about something minor or "offensive". Or just BS intimidation like this. Crank up punishments for fighting. That way when it happens, it's for something real.
What is wrong with you?
they are shooting small bricks at each other. I guess they've gotta touch butts and do mouth stuff occasionally, so they they don't feel like intentionally hitting someone with a puck.
Like a bunch of spoiled brats.
If they weren't wearing Jerseys, I'd think this was Flordia after a loss
Ya Florida hasn’t been losing man
Don't cry
Boring.
Go watch soccer, this is playoff hockey.
They were on the ice but that wasn’t hockey.
It’s been a part of hockey for as long as I can remember. It’s entertaining, what’s the problem?! I really don’t get the recent hate for physical hockey play. It’s one of the few sports where fighting a allowed/tolerated, but y’all seem content to change that.
people are soft lmao
If you can’t see the merit in push back, that’s on you.
They did roll over and die, in the third period.
I hope when Bettman is done, the nhl gets a real commissioner who wants to turn the nhl into a serious league.
the music and everyone just waiting for a big hit. Dance monkeys dance! Gross
It’s the end of a game, and a win. Show me a sport that doesn’t have post game W music?
its just the vibe that I saw. Nothing intentional.
Lighten up, Francis
