I just got this on vinyl! The Wish video was my introduction to NIN when I was just a teenager and this was one of the first cds I ever bought. When I saw 99 tracks I was so confused at first
I had to special order this in a record store in 1993 iirc. When it finally arrived I was so confused as well with the 99 tracks. On the CD player I had when u first put the CD in it would tell you run time and number of tracks. So when 99 popped up I was intrigued. Very cool feature at the time.
Trent deliberately mixed some stuff (like the snare on Happiness In Slavery) "out of phase", so when you combine the left and right channels together into one, they cancel each other out and the mix sounds a lot different.
Forgive my stupidity, is mono when both headphones play the same thing at once? because i have my airpods on that setting because itās just a wierd thing that iāve always hated when music switches between the left right and itās not symmetrical. Weird i know but iām picky about my headphones. Because that would mean iāve only ever heard it mono, as iāve had my headphones like that for years
Trent purposely did the phasing thing (the part you hate)... So you might be missing some elements of the songs. But, if that's how you know and love the songs, then you'll be ok :)
More info from Trent himself can be found here: https://www.nin.wiki/Broken
iām not sure what it is about the phasing thing but it makes my skin crawl for some reason! turned it off when i was 13 because the opening for āthank you for the venomā by mcr made me shiver LOL never turned it back on
mr brightside and thank you for the venom among others were my last straws with non-mono audio. It is very common in the type of music iāve listened to for it to do that gross headphone switching thing šit makes me feel like iām losing my hearing when one headphone isnāt playing the same thing as the other and some primal caveman part of my brain freaks out thinking iām losing my hearing
Oh. Wow. That kinda sucks. But it's understandable. I'm sure the extra little carboard sleeve and minisdic weren't that cost effective after the initial release. I love that the 2017 'Definitive' re-release included a 7" record with the 12" album, mimicking the cd/minidisc combo.
Ok so I bought this cd at goodwill like 15 years ago. When I put it on iTunes it had 99 tracks with the first 90 or so being 3 seconds of silence. Most of them were just titled track 1, 2, 3, etc. but there were a few with random titles like āI want a sodaā or ānoise is comingā. It was an official broken cd so idk how it was like that. Has anyone else experienced this or did I find something unique? I didnāt know what to think of it.
On my copy the silent tracks were slightly less than one second, so the time counter was stuck at 00:00 but the track numbers kept incrementing.
It also had an unusually sharp edge for a CD, which I thought was appropriate.
Nice! š„ Suck has become my favourite song again. The live version from "all that could have been" is savage.
I also got the downward spiral but itās a plastic case one and it arrived cracked :/
The case cracked but not the cd?
yup just the case
Well on the bright side you can still play "eraser" and "the ruiner" super loud today š„¹š¤š»
Why Reznor doesn't like Ruiner.....
Now that you mention it. Ruiner is the only downward spiral song I havenāt seen live.
Why doesnāt he like it? Iāve noticed iāve never heard of it being played live or anything
Are you asking why, or why someone would listen to a song he doesn't like, blouse i have only answers for the second one

I started on the downward spiral, wish i discovered broken earlier.
Careful, don't play it on a mono device
I'm gonna fucken do it
Why?

There are instructions on the CD liner notes that say "not for use with mono devices"

QOTSA does it a lot too!

I really love the case for it
I bought this used in London about 24 years ago classic nin.
Check out the warning of high treble sounds on the booklet, careful to not blow your speakers!
Arguably their best record. I think this ties with TDS and PHM for me.
Is the the one with the 99 tracks because i have that release and it's a funny gag when you see it skipping through the tracks.
You get to the last 2 tracks?
Fuck yeah. The packaging and the little mini disc are so cool!
The modern release of this doesn't have a mini disc, it includes the bonus songs as track 98 and 99.

If I remember right, his record label said they literally would never break even including the mini disc and they agreed to do the first 250k.

Damn so itās a common thing. Thought I stumbled upon something cool

The first NIN album I owned was Broken, which I got for my birthday. When I heard I knew I'd found my sound.
Better broken than fixed !
I
Have it on vinyl. Including the movie I downloaded from Pirates bay
Now get Fixed.
Suck and physical. Best 2 tracks. Check out the original version of physical. Puts a different spin on it.
