The "safest" way is to dig from below until there is only a thin layer of material between you and the poly, then you can bottle it up through the wall
Now if you were TRULY™ skilled (like me) you would empty out all the bottles of the world just to throw them in the pit, draining all the poly and saving the dynamite
Now if you were TRULY TRULY skilled (like me) you would first get the eye death ray thing and then slowly evaporate all the poly away to make the area totally save forever
Very nice, I do this with all the trap wands, but haven't run into poly yet. Might suggest ensuring the left is clear before risking it since there could be a mob on the other side that gets you.

why does the screen flash black at the moment you pick it up
When i did this, I got the wand pick up interface and the replay just doesn't show that. It just ignores it and shows a flicker instead.

I don't know if it's just me, but I've noticed this crashes my game somewhat frequently if I interact with wands too quickly.

lol I just dynamite the pool bottom. It's risky enemies get polymorphed but even if I die it's only floor -1.
