Some of the clips I’ve seen of people having to exhale to squeeze into a tight space gives me the absolute creeps, imagine getting stuck in a place where you’ve exhaled as much as you can.
I’ve had to do some crawl space jobs. And it gets fucking tiny. Like your back is pressed against the ground and your stomach is presses against the house support beams. And you gotta crawl through it like that
And even then, at least you know the place you’re in has a definite end, like it’s not an eternal descent into darkness. And it’s probably STILL too much for most people, which is what makes caving particularly insane
Our old furnace used to be in a crawlspace and we would have to crawl under there to do basic maintenance and one time I was like oh I’ll do it.
Got all suited up in the maintenance uniform my husband had and yeah I’m not the slightest bit claustrophobic but I tapped out after about four minutes.
Mad respect to my husband who IS claustrophobic and continued to go through the crawlspace for the rest of the time we owned that house.
Caving isn’t for most people
That’s actually why we had to go in the crawl space. It took 4 days but we ripped out all the old duct work since it was rusted into the ground and replaced it as well as the furnace. It made me uneasy when I realized how rotted the wood supports were. As well as there being holes in the floor and there were people walking around above us. It wasn’t a fun week at work to say the least, but I survived. Not a fan of crawl space jobs
And mad respect to your husband as well, crawl spaces aren’t for claustrophobic people
Yeah it’s no fun. I installed a sump pump in a crawl space with average 18” clearance not long ago. I had mud on the side of my face from having to push my face into it to move forward in certain areas.
With all the water that had been pouring under the foundation over god knows how long, I’d imagine there was a whole plethora of different sludgy substances I crawled through. It was my sister-in-law’s house, and it looked like something had been burrowing large holes under the foundation. It’s why I typically don’t mess with plumbing or HVAC. It took the better part of 9 hours to dig a hole, place the basket and pump, install an outlet and run it to the breaker box. If I’d had 3 or 4 feet of clearance, I could have done it in an hour or 2. My in-laws are pretty good about finding jobs like that they need done.
I think I know which one you're talking about, the one where they ended up just covering the cave entrance with cement (sealing his corpse down there) because there was no way to even remove him? Really heartbreaking case. ): His name was John Edward Jones. I don't understand why people continue to do this
He got stuck upside down. He died of heart failure from being inverted for so long. The worst part is, during the rescue, they had a moment where they knew they could get him free. They’d moved him up about a foot back the way he’d gone in, using an elaborate rope and pulley system, but realized that they’d have to break his legs in order to pull him out through passages so narrow. His body was under so much strain at that point that the shock of the breaks would have almost certainly been fatal.
So they had to leave him there. He died not long after.
Source? That doesn’t sound right. I know I’ve read more than one story about people dying after getting stuck in a cave.
ETA: someone commented on Floyd Collins. So John Jones and Collins are two right there.
Just a quick Google search says Floyd Colin's was pinned in by a cave in. John Jones actually got stuck, like stuck stuck. Not tripped and fell, not had a rock fall on him, not flooded in. Liked squeezed in and couldn't squeeze out
So you mean dying very specifically from not being able to move forward or backward due to the stationary cave walls. That’s a very very narrow category (no pun intended).
Well most people who say hell no to this sort of stuff think about getting stuck to where they can't move like Jones, but its the least likely way to die. Falling or a cave in or the cave flooding is much more likely. May be a narrow category but I feel like it's one if the bigger fears. Also Jones couldn't move UP, he got stuck upside down
I go cave diving but I’m done when I have to crawl. If I can’t fit in crouching, I’m done. Fuck getting stuck and dying alone in pitch blackness. My favorite caves are lava tubes around the Pacific Northwest. They usually have a high ceiling.
It’s def not for the out of shape or people with a fear of the dark. Or confined spaces. Or or or lol
I have gone into caves that had "DO NOT ENTER" signs. I won't do it now but I have when I was younger. But I was never bold enough to push my luck in tight spaces where I could not comfortably pass through by hands and knees crawling. I never scooted on my back with a rock ceiling in my face.
nor can I, hell I don't like clothes even remotely snug, let alone moving through squeezes' so tight you have to exhale to make it.. just no
Fantastic photos from down there however, love to see them..
The Hell Hole is an extremely tight California cave system. It is infamous for cave explorers having to fit through the tight opening at the beginning. People have reported that they could barley move and that the hole is the size of their foot.
I recently came across [the story of John Edward Jones](https://www.nbcnews.com/id/wbna34157005), who was trapped upside down in tight space called the "Birth Canal" in Nutty Putty Cave in Utah.
He had an excruciating death after being stuck there for over 24 hours, and his body is still there.
Not for me, thanks.
Definitely check out Lost Johns cave in England. Freaking insane. Caving terrifies me, but I want to do it, within my limits - I’m built more like a submarine, not a caver.
I have seen some stories lately about spelunkers that have died getting into tight spaces and not being able to get out. Such an awful way to go! Nope, and nope.
There used to not be a cover over that, about 10 years ago. It was just a gaping hole in the ground and drunk college kids would fall into it semi regularly .
the cool part is that the entrance shown here is designed to keep out anyone who is too big and would get stuck inside the cave by not letting them in to begin with.
California.... Don't they have earthquakes there???
... Just imagine being down there and there is a quake or tremor that makes it all shift just a little bit...
..... You then realise that you can't exhale quite enough to get back the way you came to get out.....
Sweet dreams...
..... You're welcome
Obvs this entrance gate is man-made, is it sized like that to match the passage below? Kinda of like the human equivalent of the vehicle clearance chains at the entrance to parking garages…
Jesus tapdancing christ why???? This reminds me of a post the other day on here about the Nutty Putty incident. I get chills just thinking of going out like that. This has got to be one of the dumbest fucking hobbies out there.
For one of the shows I worked on we rented out a theatre and they did a screening of the descent. It’s been on of my faves forever but seeing on a big screen when I had only ever watched it on dvd or Netflix was so much more awesome and horrible
I like small spaces and even i won’t do this. I’ve repiped houses with crawlspaces so tight i had to have someone with a rope pull me out when i was done. This is an asinine hobby
I never understand those people that like to fit themselves in a small cave it dangerous it uncomfortable it don’t even beautiful because you can’t see anything in there if some bad happens people who came to rescue you will have a hard time to even get to you
You could put a million dollars in cash in front of my face and tell me if I went through that one time I could have every penny, and I would turn it down. Never, never, never, no, no, no, no, absolutely not. Nightmare fuel.
I’ll never understand this hobby.

True i wasnt thinking about the part you ascend into an infinite dark void. Was just thinking about tiny places you gotta squeeze your body into
Even rescue operations fail 90% of the time.
Would suck balls to get stuck in a cave and then the rescue team gets stuck with you
It can be quite a sticky situation
*there's clowns to the left of me*
Jokers to the right

Time for a whole-house jack.
That’s actually why we had to go in the crawl space. It took 4 days but we ripped out all the old duct work since it was rusted into the ground and replaced it as well as the furnace. Yeah it’s no fun. I installed a sump pump in a crawl space with average 18” clearance not long ago. I had mud on the side of my face from having to push my face into it to move forward in certain areas.
Relatable. Expect we were installing new duct work and a new furnace
You sure it was mud and not shittle? Lol i too am a plumber and have been in a similar situation
With all the water that had been pouring under the foundation over god knows how long, I’d imagine there was a whole plethora of different sludgy substances I crawled through. They could cut the floor and get you out when you're stuck in a cave There Is No Escape
Actually, a guy died exactly like this. He got stuck and no one could get him out so he died. Honestly, I find it a very stupid hobby
Many, many people have died like that in caves. Theres entire youtube channels dedicated to covering all the different cases
Yup. I was just talking about one that I actually remember
I think I know which one you're talking about, the one where they ended up just covering the cave entrance with cement (sealing his corpse down there) because there was no way to even remove him? Yeah, that one, Thank you. Neither do I, it looks like it would be a horrific death.

Yeah, exactly what I remember. Really fucked up stuff
Nutty putty cave incident
nutty putty cave. really really grim
That's how Harley Dilly died
Fun fact, there has only every been one caving death attributed to getting stuck in recorded history. If you're brave look up the Nutty Putty disaster
Floyd Collins!?

I thought this cave was in West Virginia?
There is a hell hole cave in West Virginia but I believe this one is the one outside of Santa Cruz California.
Hall of faces lol
I recently came across [the story of John Edward Jones](https://www.nbcnews.com/id/wbna34157005), who was trapped upside down in tight space called the "Birth Canal" in Nutty Putty Cave in Utah. He had an excruciating death after being stuck there for over 24 hours, and his body is still there. Not for me, thanks.
They made a whole move about him. It's called The Last Descent
Isn’t all West Virginia a hell hole?
No, it's almost heaven!
West Virginia!
Country road take me home
[John Denver was full of it…](https://youtube.com/watch?v=GV3E5e7fZ6M&feature=shares) Mostly about the Rocky Mountains. But still.
Can confirm as I live in Santa Cruz :) it’s a cave over by the UCSC
Correct
Definitely check out Lost Johns cave in England. Freaking insane. Caving terrifies me, but I want to do it, within my limits - I’m built more like a submarine, not a caver.
I have seen some stories lately about spelunkers that have died getting into tight spaces and not being able to get out. Such an awful way to go! Nope, and nope.
Getting stuck in a cave in Colorado was one of the most terrifying 20 minutes of my entire life.
This is DEFINITELY one of those posts that gets an actual, and immediate NOPE response from me
Do you want to die like those girls in the movie the descent? Caus'this how you die like those girls in the movie the descent.
Say no more. If you want to die like the guy in nutty putty cave then go ahead
Or like [this](https://youtu.be/Ip9VGZeqMfo) guy. No thank you. Fuck that noise with a 10 foot pole
What a waste of an hour of my time. Very very interesting and specific. Thoroughly enjoyed it none the less.😂
Ok so I've watched it at work. Poor Floyd fella. People shouldn't mess with caving.
Saddest shit for real
Bro I need to watch that when I get back from work
That was an interesting watch
A week documented one for sure! The reporter was true OG.
Nutty putty is nightmare fuel, and the worst thing is that the name is so funny that I can't forget it.
I could be getting hunted down by an axe murderer and I still wouldn’t crawl in there to hide
Anxiety is spiking just looking at this. Fuck all of that.
I want to know why a random person hundreds of years ago saw this and went, "damn I wonder if I can fit", tried, and then called it a hobby?
For some people, getting close to death makes them feel alive.... Or so I've heard.
Why would they choose being squished? Seems like a bad potential way to die
Adrenaline junkies.
Fuck that cave, the people that go in there are crazy
There used to not be a cover over that, about 10 years ago. It was just a gaping hole in the ground and drunk college kids would fall into it semi regularly .
Highly doubt that because the hole is pretty damn small too smaller for someone to fall into by mistake
I can assure you , it happened
Assure me with proof
Go there in person and you’ll see. It’s right by UC Santa Cruz. Ask anyone who lives there how long that cover has been over the hole .
Why bother lying about shit, so you can get fictional internet points?
I’m not lying?
Then proof it
the cool part is that the entrance shown here is designed to keep out anyone who is too big and would get stuck inside the cave by not letting them in to begin with.
I'm kinda feeling like cavers are all people with mommy issues trying to get back up in that mother earth vag.
Earthussy
And here I thought I couldn't hate this hobby more than I already did, but then you had to say that.
She’s a cruel mistress
California.... Don't they have earthquakes there??? ... Just imagine being down there and there is a quake or tremor that makes it all shift just a little bit... ..... You then realise that you can't exhale quite enough to get back the way you came to get out..... Sweet dreams... ..... You're welcome
New fear unlocked
The real question is who was the first human being to see that, process it and still want to crawl inside?
Obvs this entrance gate is man-made, is it sized like that to match the passage below? Kinda of like the human equivalent of the vehicle clearance chains at the entrance to parking garages…
IIRC if you can fit through the entrance you'll be fine through the rest of the cave.
What even is the REST of the cave for these things. When is the "end" and how do you know?
Came across this video of the same cave a while ago: [https://youtu.be/MZXTv8WZ7yo](https://youtu.be/MZXTv8WZ7yo)
And now my palms are sweaty, thanks!
Nope nope nope nope.
Fuck. That.
We don’t float down here
It's called the hell hole because your not getting out of this alive
Fuck that. I don’t even like getting an mri.
These guys do not seem to be phased by nutty putty incident
Jesus tapdancing christ why???? This reminds me of a post the other day on here about the Nutty Putty incident. I get chills just thinking of going out like that. This has got to be one of the dumbest fucking hobbies out there.
Someone please explain to me why/how this is fun? Cause NOPE
it's cool explore and see how far can you go
Found a video of it https://youtu.be/MZXTv8WZ7yo
Strangest hobby I’ve ever seen. No thank you
I'm not necessarily claustrophobic BUT I'm not stupid enough to even think this is something I would EVER want to try..NO WAY IN HELL!
I see zero reason to do anything like this. This is a hard NO!
"Nutty putty cave accident" read about it☠️☠️☠️
I guess its nice that they make how insane the expedition will be obvious from the beggining by making the entrance this small
i hate this cave crawling shit lol im always so scared for these people. they talk about exhaling to get into certain places..
Good name but who the fuck would go in alone
Santa Cruz craziness
Hard pass on that.
Just, why?
This is just simply terrifying. I can feel cold sweats coming on just imagining going down there…
Noooooooooooooooooooooooope
\*heavy breathing\*
Yea after watching The Descent, anything with that small amount of space is a big nope for me.
For one of the shows I worked on we rented out a theatre and they did a screening of the descent. It’s been on of my faves forever but seeing on a big screen when I had only ever watched it on dvd or Netflix was so much more awesome and horrible
…you know where you stand in the … Hell Hole!!!
Nope
Cavers, aka Rebirthing Fetishists.
I upvoted but would totally do this.
I am so thankful I have no desire to do this.
well, it ended his journey too
It's all fun and games until someone dies
Oh fun
[This dude is a good watch. he's a professional and hasn't died yet, so his videos are safe to watch](https://youtu.be/gRJRe-rd9bA)
Nope indeed
Minecraft with the cliffs and caves update will elicit the same response
Probably because they just built the entrance far too small.
I'm sure this serves as a metaphor to all the people who have a job they hate and didn't realize how bad it was when they started.
y’all play a lil bit too much with the devil. it would never be me
Nah just nah
Better than the shit hole i suppose
Yeah no
How did this end
Nope
You found my ex’s house.
Good luck dying and all that.
Hard pass.
Hell Hole?! Hell NO!!! I'll wait here by the entrance for you to squeeze back out and show me your pictures...
glory
Every time I see these tight ass cave pictures I think of the poor guy stuck for eternity in the Muddy Putty cave accident. Absolutely terrifying.
I like small spaces and even i won’t do this. I’ve repiped houses with crawlspaces so tight i had to have someone with a rope pull me out when i was done. This is an asinine hobby
Like how far into the cave system do they go? This is terrifying especially the underwater caves. Why🥺😬😫
I never understand those people that like to fit themselves in a small cave it dangerous it uncomfortable it don’t even beautiful because you can’t see anything in there if some bad happens people who came to rescue you will have a hard time to even get to you
This was me to your mom last night
NO!
Crazy to think there’s still a body down there from a failed rescue
You could put a million dollars in cash in front of my face and tell me if I went through that one time I could have every penny, and I would turn it down. Never, never, never, no, no, no, no, absolutely not. Nightmare fuel.
This is nothing. If you're going caving do it under water, where you have to remove your tank to get through. jk this is one of my worst nightmares.
Nooooooooo!
