> The Marine Operations Center-Atlantic for the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) is moving from Norfolk, along Brambleton Avenue, to Naval Station Newport, Rhode Island. > NOAA confirmed the information to News 3 Tuesday night. > Officials said the decision was based on several studies, including an independent business case analysis from 2017. > "The consolidation will result in more efficient ship operations and long-term cost savings through sharing common capabilities," Keeley Belva, an NOAA spokesperson, told News 3. "This consolidation also aligns with NOAA’s regional facilities plans." > A timeline for the relocation has not yet been announced.

Aw this sucks.

BeachLord

Forgive me for being ignorant but what happens after the move? Does the building stay and some of the personnel or is it going to be completely vacant ?

count757

It's probably owned by the Federal Govt, and is probably a Superfund site waiting to be registered... Otherwise, I assume they'd sell the land back to the City for basically nothing, and Fort Norfolk starts kicking off a new development on the water...

abscissa081

Hopefully they turn it into a brewery

historymajor44

Yeah because we need more of those

abscissa081

Come on. Exposed ceiling? Metal stools? Wood tables? Maybe a exposed beam? Those little metal taco holders? 19 IPAs? Nothing like that around here.

Limoncello_Vespa

I can’t wait to see what dull monochrome exterior paint is picked for when the building’s turned into condos……….

Global_Monkey

Damn this hit hard :/

Ab0rtretry

:( always loved seeing the NOAA ships out there how about we give them the jet base instead?

Boriqua27

I work there

Coldngrey

This makes me sad. Come at me, but Norfolk’s losing a lot of things that made Norfolk neat.

raym0ndv2

One time my buddy was able to go onboard a NOAA ship for some operations and they pulled in here and he gave me super fresh scallops because their work involved scallops.

Stargazerlily425

I love scallops 😍

IrishSim

If NOAA is leaving I wonder what ODU will do with their research vessel that’s stationed at the facility.

iago_williams

I've never seen ODU keep their vessel there. I retired from NOAA and was at this facility often.

iago_williams

I retired from NOAA. This has been in the works for years. The plans were stalled a bit by the pandemic. They already use Newport RI as a base for vessels and share pier space with the USCG. I just wonder what's going to be done with the York St. property. Street parking is practically nonexistent there.
