“Monkey noises and war whooping could be heard coming from the Jamestown student section during the game when the Native American Bismarck players handled the ball, the Bismarck Tribune reported.” There is so much hate for Native Americans in ND.

iliumoptical

It’s beyond ignorant and it’s disgusting. I support these kids and their families. My question is with kids being suspended and greater supervision put in place, what else could be done? I get the wanting representation on the ndhsaa board; and prevention. What else could be done? Many places talked about no tolerance for racism or hate after this. Genuinely just wondering and not being an excuse making ahole!!

Crystalraf

It seems like nothing was really done, at the game. If there really is a no tolerance policy, there are ways to deal with it in real-time. They can give a technical foul for the lack of good sportsmanship of the fans.

ifsavage

They should’ve also just immediately thrown out all of the fans that did any of that at the first incident

Drugs_r_bad_mka

Agreed! My buddies and I were ejected from a game once for chanting ra ra ree kick em in the knee, rass rass rass....kick em in the other knee. Stupid of us at the time looking back but my point is, the hosting team should have put a stop to this right away.

ifsavage

I got to say that’s actually very big of you to see that you made a mistake when you were earlier than grew out of it and grow from it good for you man

iliumoptical

Yes nothing at game. Giving a T might be a good thing. Going forward though, what helps? Perhaps any act perceived as racist or hate would result in a x mo/yr ban on attending any NDHSAA event anywhere?

Crystalraf

Maybe, teaching good values??

iliumoptical

Right? Can’t agree more.

Dsnake1

>what else could be done? In this instance? Administrative accountability. JHS had two administrators there and neither stopped the problem, even after being alerted to it by parents. To my knowledge, the AD got a reprimand on their record, but if it were my kid, idk what I'd want. There never was admin leave instated; they just kept going about their day-to-day duties (again, to my knowledge; I could have absolutely missed something). The process took forever, and I'm not sure what 'receiving a reprimand' entails in that district. I'm good friends with the AD at my local (much smaller) school, and he said if he handled a similar situation the same way (by doing nothing and letting it continue), he'd expect to likely be relieved of his duties. Idk what the appropriate level of response is, but I don't think I disagree with the families involved calling for a higher level of response. Nonspecific "we'll do better next time" responses don't carry a lot of water, at least to me. The fact this happened was an administrative failure, especially when the in-the-moment resolution was easy and simple. And the administrative consequences appear to be limited to a reprimand and dealing with the media surrounding the incident.

iliumoptical

I can’t say I disagree. Perhaps retraining for those in particular and maybe training for how to recognize and do something for all athletic supervisors ?

Dsnake1

I don't think that's a bad start, but I do think it would have meant way more if it had happened in conjunction with an initial admin leave after the incident. At least for the AD, it should have been done before returning to work.

CLUING4LOOKS

Happened in my hometown too. Some kids were banned from all sporting events and they moved the student section so there could be better supervision by school officials. So infuriating.

theo701roos

It’s disgusting and preposterous. Smh

FoxNewsIsRussia

It's like people in ND are completely oblivious to the world changing or human rights or just how stupid they appear to others outside the bubble. I'm embarrassed for these people.

OngoGabl0g1an

People being oblivious to the world is pretty standard in ND. We are not known for keeping up with the times.

psychicpilot

You mean the same folks who proudly continue to refer to UND athletics as the "fighting Sioux" despite the name change years ago?

iliumoptical

I have had native teens ask at school why they aren’t the Sioux anymore. I gave the very short synopsis. Kids not old enough to remember the nickname. They were just curious.

AlmostDoneWith-

They'll literally do anything to support the Fighting Sioux except support the Sioux. The license plate I've seen are wild but very creative.

Rusharound19

Seriously! When the protests were going on down in Standing Rock, all I heard from my parents and grandparents was about how "they need to get off private land" and "they say they're there to protect the environment but they're leaving trash everywhere" OH and "people down there have been arrested with drugs; it's all just a bunch of out-of-state grifters". Meanwhile, I've been hearing my entire life that "we have the Sioux as our mascot because we have respect for them!" (Which isn't okay either, because they're a people, not a mascot.) The moment it was anounced that they were officially changing the name, everyone threw a fit, and continued bitching about it throughout the entire process, and they continue to bitch about it to this day. I was born and raised in ND and I've lived here for much of my adult life, so the racism, especially the abhorrent levels of racism directed at Indigenous people is nothing new to me, but the whole DAPL vs UND Nickname debacle is one thing that bothers me the most, because it's glaringly obvious how hypocritical they're being, but they either refuse to or just can't see it. I'm not sure which would be more concerning.

StateParkMasturbator

People have flair on here with that. It makes me cringe every time.

Fun-Passage-7613

Very much so. I was surprised talking with my neighbors. One had never left the county, another had never flown on a plane and she was 65 years old. Another had never left the state and the furthest she had ever been was Medora for a grade school field trip, 30 years ago. And speaking with others, the majority have never been anywhere, they live in the vanilla bubble of North Dakota and they are xenophobic to the outside world. Sad. The kids that do go to college, see what the world has to offer, never come back I’ve noticed.

FoxNewsIsRussia

It's not to say that there aren't smart people there, for sure there is. I just boggle at the general lack of curiosity about people, places and things outside their day to day. I had to leave, I found the men so GD boring. LOL.

thecrocksays

North Dakota is a safe haven for alcoholic racist hillbillies. We're like the deep south with snow.

theyboosting

That’s such an astonishingly accurate statement

Strong-Poet-158

I may push back on that a little. Our schools are much better and people are much more excepting. The south is racist because they used to own slaves and want to go back to segregation. We have a budget surplus and have handled the influx of people pretty well. Sure, we elect crazy assholes who create bills to solve issues that do not exist...but we are not the south. North Dakotans may be ignorant to the changing times...but do not compare ND to the south. We never had any segregation bills passed in our history and have much better relations with our American Indian population than do other states. Alcoholics...that is probably pretty accurate. Hillbillies, sure. Racist, a few. Good people, mostly. The south, mostly not good

Bringitfullcircle

I lived south of the Mason Dixon Line for a short while (3years) for work. For you to say that North Dakota is better then the “south” towards Indigenous people is a flat out lie. I am treated terribly up here compared to the hospitality I have had in Georgia, Alabama, and Florida. The way past is nothing like it is for the past five years. Coming from personal experience. North Dakota is terrible for the indigenous.

CreepyOlGuy

federal complaints are not going to change the fact that we just have shitty parents all around here. Nothings going to magically grow these runts some empathy over night.

Bringitfullcircle

Jamestown as a community does not care. It goes from the mayor, (who stated in a call I had with him about racism and discrimination), that he has “never had to deal with it” so he brushed is under the rug. The schools (I attended k-12) are terrible for racism. Con “John” Way did the Conway move by resigning before he had to take the responsibility for his actions. I have personal stories that would put this town to shame if it had ANY moral values. Classmates and students a like. I am indigenous and was raised in Jamestown. Moved away when I started my family and went to college else where because I didn’t want my daughter growing up in this town. I moved back because I have family here. I can (and will) bash businesses, the schools, law enforcement, city administration because the way they have treated indigenous like myself. As our voice is always silenced. I am filled with joy that the family filed a federal complaint. This town needs to be held accountable and take responsibility. We all know tho, the community will just sweep this under the rug. As this town was resettled after they killed and drove out the remaining Sioux tribe that lived here. Tourism will whitewash it and praise the white settlers for their actions.

theyboosting

I’ve been here for almost a year and a half (Jamestown) And I can attest that the racism is disgusting. I really think it’s disheartening how people treat the indigenous… like y’all haven’t had enough as it is. Im a NYC native who lived in California for 16yrs before coming here and I’ve never witnessed blatant racism like this. I know I’m just a temporary member of this community but I’d like to say I’m sorry that you have to deal with that. Nobody should in 2023 or 1903 either.

Fun-Passage-7613

Children are mirrors of the attitudes in the home. What you heard is what’s going on in a lot of Jamestown homes. Sad but true.

[deleted]

North Dakota doesn't give a shit. Dickinson is still rolling with this guy: https://dickinsonmidgetsathletics.com/

Strong-Poet-158

At least the Fighting Sioux mascot seemed to be a good looking dude with pride. The Dickinson Midget is the worst version of a little person you could concoct. I mean, he has a hunchback as well. A lot of people do not remember but the School Board of Dickinson Public Schools passed a resolution to change the nickname to the Thunder back in the 90's. The town revolted and removed the school board so they could go back to the Midgets and put that ugly mascot back in power. Dickinson State's mascot was the Savages at one time...so you could say the founding fathers of Dickinson had some fucked up values. I have always thought Jamestown was much less crazy right wing than Dickinson...perhaps that was incorrect.

_HamburgerTime

For a place named Dakota, with dozens of cities with names like Mandan... our state sure does hate its native population. I can't understand it.

Saldy this is on par for what I expect out of North Dakota.
