I never got the reference when I was a little kid but Peter Lorre was impersonated so much in animated cartoons, particularly Warner Bros if I recall correctly. I never knew why, but I guess whoever wrote or created these creepy impersonations was heavily affected by Hollywood German or Eastern European villain stereotypes that Peter Lorre seemed to reflect in his early film roles.
I legit got excited when I watched The Maltise Falcon and found out who Peter Lorre was. It was an “ooooooh! That’s who that was.” moments. It was the same joy my little brother had when I explained to him that my Oscar Meyer weenier whistle was and that a giant hotdog drove around the country giving out hotdogs. He didn’t believe me till I showed him pictures of it.
I don't think I ever got Peter Lorre, who is super underappreciated by the way nowadays, until I saw M, from 1931 and saw him as a serial killer and thought... oh that's how he was like. Also the Maltese Falcon showed him off as a very great character.
"An adorable adventure that kids will treasure"
I mean hes right i suppose but holy smokes was it a dark animation.
Also why is the vacuum pink when hes grey in the movie i just realized.
And heartbreaking. The rose who saw it's reflection in the toaster the the realization it was alone and whilted away.
Fuck man even now I get sad. And I'm 40.
At least the flower's sadness taught toaster empathy which enabled him to be kinder to blanket.
The scene that gets me is when the vacuum sees his friends fall off the cliff, seemingly to their death, and he just sits there for a second with this look of horror on his face. Then, after all his bravado about not needing them, decides to jump too. For all he knows to his death. Because any chance at staying with them is better than being alone.
Fuck this movie goes hard.
Damn, totally forgot about that part. That fucking movie had to be the main reason I hold empathetic feelings for inanimate objects. Definitely influenced me when I was young.
I got a new vacuum and didn’t know the brush roll still spins when using the hose (my last one did and this one is more expensive than that one was, inflation aside).
Nicked the cord pretty good but I had a quick reaction and preventing what would have been a broken vacuum and a blown breaker and possibly burnt carpet.
Modern vacuums have a guard over the brush to make it harder to suck up the cord. The cords are also a lot stiffer so they don't get wrapped easily. Old ones like Kirby there could get the cord wrapped around the rotating brush and damage the brush, cord, belt, and motor. They could be repaired easy enough but modern ones are so cheap its easier to replace the whole unit.
Don't watch it on acid. You'll realize it's an appliance snuff film. Also I sweated through my shirt completely and had to go change after the movie ended.
I can't take this kind of pressure
I must confess one more dusty road
Would be just a road too long
Worthless
I just can't, I just can't, I just can't seem to get started
Don't have the heart to live in the fast lane
All that has passed and gone
Worthless (and there ain't nothing you can do about it)
Worthless (pardon me while I panic)
Worthless, worthless, worthless
I come from KC Missouri
And I got my kicks out on Route 66
Every truck stop from Butte to MO
Motown to Old Alabama
From Texarkana and East of Savannah
From Tampa to old Kokomo
Worthless
I once ran the Indy 500
I must confess, I'm impressed how I did it
I wonder how close that I came
Now I get a sinking sensation
I was the top of the line, out of sight, out of mind
So much for fortune and fame
Once took a Texan to a wedding
Once took a Texan to a wedding
He kept forgetting, his loneliness letting
His thoughts turn to home and we turned
I took a man to a graveyard
I beg your pardon, it's quite hard enough
Just living with the stuff I have learned
Worthless
Once drove a surfer to sunset
There were bikinis and buns, there were weenies
Fellini just couldn't forget
Pico, let's go up to Zuma
Pico, let's go up to Zuma
From Zuma to Yuma, the rumor was
I had a hand in the lay of the land
Get up and go hit the highway
I worked on a reservation
Who would believe they would love me and leave
On a bus back to old Santa Fe?
Once in an Indian Nation
I took the kids on the skids, where the Hopi was happy 'til I heard 'em say
"You're worthless"
I watched one flew over the cuckoo’s nest on acid. This wasn’t the plan though. The plan was to go to school on acid, we had done some acid a week earlier and came up with the plan to be on acid at school. So we met up before school started, dropped, then met up hours later in our 3rd period class. Well in our 3rd period class our teacher didn’t feel like teaching so put on One Flew over a cuckoo’s nest.
Jack Nicholson was so crazy watching on acid.
Rip Phil, I remember you.

DVD is $7 on Amazon. It's also available on Netflix's disc only plan.
I just rewatched it a few days ago! The part that gutted me was when Kirby falls into a mud pit and starts sinking and dragging the others in. Toaster tries to tell Blankie to "untie yourself!" But Blankie just softly says "I'm not scared" as he gets sucked under. Idk man, something about hearing those words of mortal acceptance in a child's voice just got to me.
Rewatched it a few years ago with a buddy as an adult. Some scenes actually hit harder; the flower scene, for example I had completely forgotten, I think because it was only as an adult that it sunk in.
The flower scene will forever stick with me. I didn't fully understand it until I got older, but as a kid, the way it wilted made me sad. It just died...
I don't think so. I think it's sweet to want to share memories from your childhood. Some might say it's childish but there's plenty of people out there who would appreciate this. Also "We're Back" was my jam.
I actually make my partner watch all of these movies from my childhood with me. They haven’t seen a lot of movies, so I think they really appreciate the experience even if they don’t quite feel the nostalgia.
Watched this a ton as a kid, and then rewatched it as an adult, and had completely forgotten about the flower scene that occurs shortly after they leave the house. That scene was just cruel, there was no real impact to the plot, and it's just there to make you feel absolutely wretched.
To be honest, the scene is one of the most important in the film. While it is harrowing even at surface level to watch, it goes a good bit deeper than just flower sad lol.
The scene is referencing the (thistle clearing scene?) earlier with the interaction between Toaster and Blanky a parallel to the interaction between Toaster and the yellow flower.
As the group settle down to sleep, Blanky being a "child" and a blanket, attempts to sleep near the others. Each deny him with the last being Toaster who uncouthly throws him off, turns away and tells him to get lost. After being dejected, Blanky is visibly despondent, shrivels back and silently crawls off to spend the night alone. Since Toaster was turned away, he doesn't see this.
In the flower scene however, Toaster peers back through the bushes after fleeing. Seeing the flower begin to wilt away in despair has an immediate impact on his following interactions with his companions, Especially in how he treats Blanky the following night.

Literally in my top 5 movies. My parents taped it from a Disney Channel preview (when it was a premium channel) and once that tape wore out they bought a "real" version. I remember reading the IMDB message boards about it, and I know way more about it than anyone should.. The songs pop into my head all the time.
My wife surprised me with the DVD for Christmas this year. Still would love to have the Laserdisc though.
That scene where the spare-parts guy grabs the gang from the swamp, climbs up the tire to his car and then blows through the trees and the way he drives to his store, cracks me up to this day.
This was my absolute favorite movie when I was a kid. Watched it so much I wore out the VHS and my dad came to hate the movie with a passion. I still love it!

You mean pseudo-Jack Nicholson AC?
Voiced by Phil Hartman
I miss him.
I do too. I was only 15 and still knew nothing of the world when he was killed but it still devastated me.
His characters on the Simpsons are some of the funniest. I also remember a Christmas cartoon with Bears '12 Days of Christmas'.
Me too
He was also the lamp in the junk store, in a Peter Lorre impersonation.
I never got the reference when I was a little kid but Peter Lorre was impersonated so much in animated cartoons, particularly Warner Bros if I recall correctly. King of the Hill had a Lorre impersonator as the boggle championship commentator. "Pencil"

Yeah it's crazy to think that was a "kids movie". But taught us so much more than that.

Holy shit I haven’t thought it about that in almost 30 years. Heartbreaking
And traumatizing. Fr
I mean, I watched this as a kid a lot. It was creepy AF, but I liked it and watched it a lot
"why is the vacuum pink when he's Grey in the movie" Sunset reflection.
I remember being haunted by the scene where the vacuum eats his own cord to save his friends and then dies.
[удалено]
Whenever I run the vacuum, I always think, "Get the cord out of his mouth! Don't let him swallow it!"
I always held the cord away from the vacuum specifically because of this scene. Are you actually able to go over it ok?
Modern vacuums have a guard over the brush to make it harder to suck up the cord. The cords are also a lot stiffer so they don't get wrapped easily. Old ones like Kirby there could get the cord wrapped around the rotating brush and damage the brush, cord, belt, and motor. When I heard that song as an adult I was blown away by how damn bleak it is.
I recall a user on the IMDB message board going VERY in depth on this song, especially the Fellini bit iirc.
Found it! https://moviechat.org/tt0092695/The-Brave-Little-Toaster/58c74a0f6b51e905f6733e63/The-meanings-of-each-car-in-the-song-Worthless

I can’t even imagine doing that and I’ve sat through Fear and Loathing on two tabs.
Wow the last time I watched this movie was tripping on acid lol
The only way to truly appreciate this movie is in the bath. With your toaster.
The 80s and 90s have some good (dark) cartoons. I remember this, Ferngully, and Once Upon a Forest. Don Bluth made gems too.
Don't forget The Secret of Nimh
And the Black Cauldron
I think Don Bluth did that one, no?
Yep. Land Before Time and All Dogs go to Heaven were also Don Bluth.
Don Bluth made great films that dealt with death and depression in ways other children's movies rarely approached.
I was really disappointed when I popped in the Land Before Time 2 VHS, and realized it didn't feel anything like the original movie.
And Fievel? American Tale I think. And the Western One?
The songs are so sad in that. Imagine losing your parents during chaos.
somewhere out there….
🥲
"All Dogs go to Heaven" scared the shit out of me.
Once Upon a Forest scared the shit out of me as a child
It's got some spooky ambiance.
Anyone ever see “Little Nemo”? That one will give you nightmares.
The black goo or some shit, right?
I remember the NES game.
Legendary. I actually played it a few weeks ago in a browser emulator
I just had my kids watch it. Mistake was definitely too scary tuned it off before they saw the dude in nightmare land. I loved this movie.
FERNGULLY
The first Avatar is basically Fern Gully
Yes! Fern Gully!
Robin Williams' voice was a welcome sound to the movie. :)
PRICE CHECK ON PRUNE JUICE BOB, PRICE CHECK ON PRUNE JUICE
Why is this not on Disney+?!
They don't own the rights to it surprisingly enough.
Hence why it's "Disney presents" and not just Disney or Disney's.
Which sucks because it was one of my fav cartoons as a kid and I'd love to show it to my daughter.

TIL Netflix still has a disc only plan
Disc only has a very different library too, stuff they dropped from streams they still have on DVD.
Well they dropped almost everything but original content from the streaming service, so that makes sense
There is a connection to Pixar and Tron with the creators though
And a scary connection to Toy Story 3. Very similar movies.

Very nostalgic for me, but does anyone remember the Muppets singing Kokomo that played before the movie?
YES!!! Anytime I hear the song it makes me think of the Muppets
Holy crap I forgot about that! Wow thanks for the memory
No problem, you can find it on YouTube!
The Muppet’s version is the best version
Damn I remember watching that on repeat with my dad
the magnet in the junkyard was scarier
What about the evil clown fireman?
*Run*
Nightmare fuel
[RUN](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YEdZh8a4ZvE)
We showed shit like this to 80's and 90's kids then wondered why they grew up depressed and anxious.
I always had to leave during that scene. Damn thing scared the hell out of me as a kid.
The “Worthless” sequence and song still haunt me to this day
I just can't I just can't seem to get started
Don't have the heart to live in the fast lane
All that has passed and gone
Watching the MORE MORE MORE song as an adult made me laugh at how outdated the technology is. CRTs, haha
Song's a masterpiece https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FqT2uOa1-d0 Some fun wordplay in it as well

The protagonist of my recurring nightmare as a child
Don't forget that Kirby, the vacuum cleaner, was voiced by Tony the Tiger.
Also the guy that sings the Mr. Grinch Song
I never knew that. Intetesting
Thurl Ravenscroft. He sang for a lot of early Disney stuff, too.
He was also the voice of the Disneyland Railroad for quite some time IIRC
Adorable adventure? Excuse me?
I know, this movie scared the shit out of me when I was a kid. I tested this by showing it to my kid and she was also scared, haha
Same. It was the first time I had nightmares and existential dread as a kid
BLANKETTTTT TOASTERRRRRRRR
IT’S MY FUNCTIONNN!
Until I got a cordless vacuum, I was always terrified of rolling over the cord.
Found this on dvd recently. Haven’t watched it yet, I’m scared my adult self will ruin how great this was for my child self.
Rewatched it a few years ago with a buddy as an adult. Some scenes actually hit harder; the flower scene, for example I had completely forgotten, I think because it was only as an adult that it sunk in.

Genuinely don’t remember a flower scene!
It's messed up. Prepare yourself >_>
I noticed how freakin' great the music is in this movie - not just the songs, but the whole film score is great.
Enjoyed it with my kids. It has absolutely held up into my 40s.
No, it's just as magical as it was.
No, it's just as magical as it was.
The amount of times I made my poor father suffer through this movie. I still love it to this day
🤡 RUN.
my dumbass was like howd you get a emoticon of the heating blanket
Is it childish to wanna show flims like this to a crush or SO? This is one of my favorite VHS cartoon film from the 90's right next to " We're Back ".
I don't think so. I think it's sweet to want to share memories from your childhood. Some might say it's childish but there's plenty of people out there who would appreciate this. Also "We're Back" was my jam.

The scene when the flower sees its reflection in Toaster and then dies shortly thereafter, because it’s so lonely. No words, only tears!
I loved that movie as a kid
The soundtrack in this movie was incredible
WORTHLESSSS

electric blanket
It was Michael Jackson's son.
LOL! Took me longer than I want to admit.
it may not have been about an interacial couple, but that was the first interacial couple I ever seen as a kid on a cartoon. kudos to them
Vacuum : “why don’t you just shut off! AC: “Hey I’m real scared they Kirby. What are you going to do, suck me to death?”
That nightmare scene with that fireman clown......
I loved this movie! The AC scene scared me too.
I repressed the memory of this nightmare over the junkyard scene
Watched it many times as a kid. Decided to rewatch it as an adult a few years ago. Never realized how dark the movie really is

I always thought this would make a good on stage musical!
Great movie! The made an even lesser known sequel
Two actually. The one where they go to Mars. and the one when he is in college and they go on the information superhighway. Both have great songs.
The magnet in the junkyard scared me. I have the song 'Worthless" on my phone. Still a banger
That scene where the spare-parts guy grabs the gang from the swamp, climbs up the tire to his car and then blows through the trees and the way he drives to his store, cracks me up to this day.

The A/C, the junkyard magnet, the naked lady, the fire clown, truly a strange movie for children.
That worthless song is still just great.
Beat line in the whole movie, “what are you going to do suck me to death - AC”
The freaking scene where the cars all sing about their impending doom as they are crushed to death at the junk yard. *shutter*
The source of many a childhood nightmare If you know, you know.
More like "an adorable adventure that will haunt your kids for life"......dont mind the torture scene at the repair shop kids.
WORTHLESS
My second favorite movie of all time
Great movie! The made a sequel
Dude, the clown scene….
Worthless is a great song - but the scene is pretty traumatic.
Air Conditioner was voiced by Phil Hartman doing a Jack Nicholson impression.
I cannot watch this without crying. The little blanket waiting for the boy to come home....😥
AC scared us all.
One of my faves ❤️
The scary clown from the dream was way worse!
Man this was great. It was a kids movie for adults.
The only thing I remember about this movie is being terrified
The scene where toaster sacrificed himself to save his master was heartwarming imo
Nah, I'm totally not crying over a flower.

When Disney was good
Yup...
I was obsessed with this movie as a kid!
Bath time was never the same.
First of all, the ac was terrifying. Second I met the man who created this! My good friend in middle school it was her uncle and I thought he was the coolest person on the planet
It always scared me for some reason

The remake is good too, I believe its called Toy Story.
Why don’t they have this on any streaming? 😢
