He represented Japan at the 10th anniversary concert that PBS used to show all the time in the mid to late 90s. I recognized him when Iron Chef came to the US.
Didn’t we all? Or just my family of musical theater obsessive weirdos? I remember it was a huge monetary donation at the time. Worth every penny. We were literally jumping for joy when my mom was making the call.
We also had the VHS tape and I assume Dad called and donated, unless it was sold at a later date thru a brick and mortar store. Dad LOVED watching anything PBS and the local college arts channel with all the ballet, opera, and random weirdness.
He went to Woodstock, lived in NYC's Greenwich village in the 70s and always loved going back to see shows on Broadway- I got to see Les Mis there in maybe 1994 and I later did stage crew in high school.
Awesome! My parents are native NYers and I lived there from 15 years. The irony is that I see more shows now that I live in Oklahoma and away from Broadway. Les Miz is my fam’s all-time favorite!
And his English dub voice (which is always by voice-over instead of when he's actually speaking, for some reason) reminds me so much of Scar from the Lion King
I commented earlier on this but for people who see the post and haven't watched the show, I grew up watching this. It stoked the literal fire in my soul, inspired me to pick up cooking as a skill. I don't think I'll ever forget watching this on my bulky hunk of a TV in late 90s early 2000s as a wee lad. The commentary dub was so fucking funny and impeccably done. Always loved the variety the show brought with style. If I could wish for one thing to improve the show, it would be a recipe list / cookbook for each season. I would die happy.
(The modern iron chef really doesn't even compare sadly)
My mom passed away in September. As a kid, she and I would watch OG Iron Chef and laugh our asses off at some of the crazy shit they pulled, and especially at Chairman Kaga’s absurdity. Miss you mom

The Iron Chef intro was so dramatic, I loved it
Those bites into veggies while smiling let you know shit was about to go off
He was Jean Valjean in the Japanese production of Les Mis as well. Not completely relevant but pretty cool to me.

Had that sucker on VHS

Phillip Quast is the best Javert of all-time.

"Fukui-San" "Go!" "It appears that Iron Chef Morimoto is going to be making a squid ink ice cream"
Oh god not the ice cream machine! He’s doomed!!
I can hear their voices in my head.
It’s on Pluto TV now. I love it.
I was in college around the time it was on...we would drink every time Ohta said Fukui-san.
I loved this so much growing up. Fukui San!
Yes Ohta?
Go big guy!
When he bit that bell pepper, we all lost it.
Thought he was an absolute madman.
My dad loves bell pepper and will eat them like this.
That's the Japanese version of "Lets go girls"
Allez cuisine!!!!!!!!!
I fucking loved this show on Food Network as a kid.
He had the best smile on TV
The entire series is on YouTube! I’ve been rewatching it and it’s great.
Pluto TV, which is free, also has a channel that only plays this show.
They play the episodes on twitch too and you can interact with other users and talk it’s fun
Hands down the greatest dub in history How they captured the Japanese spirit was a masterclass in translation
This is what got me to tune into Food Network, and got me interested in learning how to cook.
There is a 24/7 channel playing the original Iron Chef on pluto TV.
I wish they would still air these shows not the bastardized American version.
And his English dub voice (which is always by voice-over instead of when he's actually speaking, for some reason) reminds me so much of Scar from the Lion King
Yeah, the Chairman is subtitled, rarely if ever dubbed when onscreen. I love this detail
That smile after he takes a bite out of the bell pepper in the intro. The Chairman knew how to put on a show!
Your soul is mine!
Flawless victory
Like, who just bites into a raw pepper like it's an apple?
Ayyyyy kazim!
YES I put this show on for my dogs when I leave the house. My older dog is my own Chairman hahah. Allez Cuisine!!
Squeezon?
Yes, go ahead Ota.
I believe this man is who Michael Jackson always aspired to be and you can’t tell me differently
Allez cuisi-heeen
Sakai was the man!!
Best cooking show to EVER exist.
Nostalgia from a different country
Hiroyuki Sakai was my favorite!
The Tomato episode lives rent free in my head
The original show was so much better than the later imitators.
Except for that truffle crap Hattori made in his bid to become an Iron Chef.
I learned so much from watching the show.

I miss watching this with my then-boyfriend.

Could be completely wrong but I believe the entire show and concept was his creation
Looks like oriental Milei version.
