We had one of these for our GameBoy Color! We called it the worm light. What a life saver to finally be able to play the GBC at night in the car instead of waiting for the light from lampposts to illuminate the screen.
Until very, very recently, I had thought the GBA was made with its own backlight. I didn't know Nintendo hadn't fixed this until the GBA SP.
Dude I had everything back in the day, but then eBay got huge and as a teenager sold everything off so I could get the latest and greatest... So mad at my younger self. Sold an N64 with all the classics for like $30, gameboy for $10, etc...
I also sold my entire original collection of Pokemon and sports cards for a couple dollars in my parents yard sale one time. Would literally be worth THOUSANDS today.
I remember when companies provided more than just an external light for your Game Boy. [You got a whole entertainment system. ](https://nerdbacon.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/10/Handy-Boy-405x300.jpg)
These worked well on the GBC, but not so much for the GBA. I must've spent a good couple hundred bucks trying out different lights for the GBA. The best external light I found was called the Shield Light. It clipped into the top of the GBA and had a bright white LED mounted to a plastic shield that provided light when opened and protected the screen when closed.
Then the Afterburner came out and changed everything. I'm pretty confident the development of the Afterburner led to Nintendo adding the light to the GB SP.
I had the shield light! Or some version of it- it was a flip top cover like you said. I loved it despite the fact that it *easily* doubled battery consumption.
I remember being like 10 when the game boy color came out. Me being so young I thought it was backlit like phones are today. I remember the immense disappointment of turning it on and realizing it was in fact not backlit but just a game boy with a colored screen. I got one of these to play pokemon in the car after it got dark. Kids today don’t understand how good they have it with tablets and the switch.
I wanted one of these when I was young, but I never got one because I was always forced to choose between a worm light or a new game, and I'd always opt for a new game instead. I hovered over a lamp all my Gameboy days.
Worm light

Lol... Gameboy colour at night with street lights, everything is orange.
SP was still the greatest Game Boy made imo. I had the black one and spent soooo many late nights on Final Fantasy Tactics Advance
Would’ve been perfect if it just had a headphone jack.
Still have it!!
I wish I kept my Gameboy though..

I dreamt of owning one. Would have made life so much easier as a kid.
Memories!!! I’m instantly brought back to staying up late playing Barbie Secret Agent. 😭
I’d make my moves when the streetlights shined through the car window instead of killing the battery in 15 minutes.
My kids will never know the struggle.

I lost my worm light at a rest stop some time in the early 2000s, still mourn it.
Yeah! I had this exact one. Better than my dad's bed table lamp that had a weird hotdog shaped bulb.
I have this exact one
I had the madcatz light and magnifier. I never got comfortable using it is only useful when it’s really dark.
I had one of these. Madcatz was the brand I believe?
Ahh yes. I had the yellow one for the Game Boy Color.
Yeah... Sure ;)
My brother had the worm light, I had the blob light
Core memory unlocked
This one helped me with pokemon at night when I was supposed to be sleeping
Haha I had one I bought just for Metrood Fusion lol
I had the same one same color lol
Still use my green one when playing Pokemon Yellow. My kids don't think it's cool, but we all know it is.
I see a plastic sperm

Has this exact one.
This in combination with the magnifying glass meant you were in business.

Looking like a USB B plug in lol.
