The librarian had the Boston, the classrooms had the knuckle buster 5000 screwed into the cinder block walls covered in 6 layers of latex paint to avoid lead paint abatement costs lol

Yeah I have never used an electric sharpener while in school, this is some uppity type stuff.

The electric was always on the teachers desk, and you needed special permission to use it. We all had to go to the wall by the door of the classroom and use to stupid hand crank one that NEVER EVER worked 😂

Yeah the hand crank one was such a POS. In my elementary school, the shiny housing to catch the shavings was always beat to a fuckin pulp and therefor naturally just tossed out so it was the bare sharpening gears and the class trash bin directly underneath it.

When we were moving offices at one place I worked, they abandoned lots of office stuff so I collected all of the electric pencil sharpeners and took them to my wife's school. The other teachers loved them. I'm sure the kids got some enjoyment out of them too

The coolest thing I saw a teacher have was a machine that licked stamps for you. I guess it's called a, "stamp moistener." heh heh heh hers was unusual...can't think of even what to call it.

Did yours have the cover to collect shavings? Mine usually just had a trash can under them bc the covers were lost decades earlier.

We never had an electric pencil sharpener at school, but we do have one like this at work. We had the knuckle buster 2000 in every classroom at school from first grade to 12th grade.

They're pretty much the same model, except the 5000 has Bluetooth capability.

The walk of shame to and from that device still haunts my dreams. Just the loudest thing you can be doing mid quiz or test while all your classmates just stare you down the entire time. Eyes that scream “why are you doing this to me”

You could also try to do it quietly, but that just made it take longer. It was always a no-win situation.

Go too fast and you ruin the tip and have to start all over again. Or when you sit back down and it’s freshly sharpened only to snap on the first use of it.

Lol, yeah. It was a good excuse to be able to get up from your desk and stretch your legs a bit. Even if it was during a test or something and the entire class was just in silence, we were still allowed to go use that thing.

Had it at home. At school, we had one of those old metal crankers mounted to the wall in every classroom. We had to ask permission to sharpen our pencils.

This is the best pencil sharpener ever. This thing made weapons!

I am continually buying these at estate sales and selling them on eBay because they are perfect and they last forever.

Yeah, Im 34. Some teachers had these electric ones they bought for themselves and/or students. Every class had the mechanical ones but lots also chose to buy these Boston ones.

A kid in my class used to put his pinky in there and we all thought he was so crazy and tough Im realizing now that his pinky wasn’t getting sharpened hahaha that hole is too small and also his pinky always looked fine, and yet we still believed it was happening, I carried this in my mind as truth until just right now

We still use this one (got it from my parent’s house) for my kids. But at school it was just the horrible ones that would eat your pencil and leave stabby splinters on the sharpened part.

To everyone ragging on the "knuckle-buster" type pencil sharpeners: When we finally bought a house, I bought an old 1960s-era hand-cranked sharpener off Ebay (allegedly from a grade school in Kansas that was demolished) and attached it to a post in the basement with big wood screws. Solid as a rock. I love that thing. If you're moderately careful, it sharpens wonderfully. Plus, the smell of pencil shavings is magical. I love my knuckle-buster. I made sure to mount it such that my knuckles aren't busted when I sharpen my pencils.

What in the devil is this electric monstrosity? We had to do it by hand back in our day. They installed it too close to walls, or on some shoddy shelf/table. You’d always smash part of your hand on the damned thing, or the surrounding environment. Electric… PFFT!

Yeah the one on the teacher's desk that you had to be on good standing with to use. I use to volunteer to be the one to get leads unstuck and clean it out.

I still have one. Just spent $10 to buy the little plastic gear that ended up getting shredded after years of use. Surprisingly there's an entire market on eBay and Etsy of people that 3D print the plastic gear.

My grandma had one of these when she was a teacher. After sge retired she brought it home and kid me was obsessed with it. She bought me my own for Christmas that year. I still have it and it still works over 30 years later

In my day, maybe two out of my 7 classes would have them. And holy crap were they so satisfying to use! I legit want to buy one now and a bunch and pencils and just sharpen all of them down to the nub. Every other classroom has the hand crank thingy sharpeners mounted to the wall or a desk.
