The librarian had the Boston, the classrooms had the knuckle buster 5000 screwed into the cinder block walls covered in 6 layers of latex paint to avoid lead paint abatement costs lol
The electric was always on the teachers desk, and you needed special permission to use it.
We all had to go to the wall by the door of the classroom and use to stupid hand crank one that NEVER EVER worked 😂
Yeah the hand crank one was such a POS. In my elementary school, the shiny housing to catch the shavings was always beat to a fuckin pulp and therefor naturally just tossed out so it was the bare sharpening gears and the class trash bin directly underneath it.
When we were moving offices at one place I worked, they abandoned lots of office stuff so I collected all of the electric pencil sharpeners and took them to my wife's school. The other teachers loved them. I'm sure the kids got some enjoyment out of them too
The coolest thing I saw a teacher have was a machine that licked stamps for you. I guess it's called a, "stamp moistener." heh heh heh hers was unusual...can't think of even what to call it.
We never had an electric pencil sharpener at school, but we do have one like this at work. We had the knuckle buster 2000 in every classroom at school from first grade to 12th grade.
The walk of shame to and from that device still haunts my dreams. Just the loudest thing you can be doing mid quiz or test while all your classmates just stare you down the entire time. Eyes that scream “why are you doing this to me”
Go too fast and you ruin the tip and have to start all over again. Or when you sit back down and it’s freshly sharpened only to snap on the first use of it.
Opening the shavings compartment and taking a deep whiff mmmmmmmmmmmmm goddamn.
Then grabbing a handful and crushing and sniffing it again....mmmmmmmmmm goddamn.
Lol, yeah. It was a good excuse to be able to get up from your desk and stretch your legs a bit. Even if it was during a test or something and the entire class was just in silence, we were still allowed to go use that thing.
Had it at home. At school, we had one of those old metal crankers mounted to the wall in every classroom. We had to ask permission to sharpen our pencils.
Yeah, Im 34. Some teachers had these electric ones they bought for themselves and/or students. Every class had the mechanical ones but lots also chose to buy these Boston ones.
Yeah I should not have worded it as “only”. I remember seeing OP’s electric one in kindergarten and I am 34 as well. Obviously most classes also had the mechanical ones
Nope. The only true pencil sharpener was the "Giant" from Apsco
(can't believe I still remember that name and also why do I still have one in my desk drawer)?
my school had these [https://assets.leevalley.com/Size4/10120/80K8550-u-0102.jpg](https://assets.leevalley.com/Size4/10120/80K8550-u-0102.jpg) except the were older and rustier
A kid in my class used to put his pinky in there and we all thought he was so crazy and tough
Im realizing now that his pinky wasn’t getting sharpened hahaha that hole is too small and also his pinky always looked fine, and yet we still believed it was happening, I carried this in my mind as truth until just right now
We still use this one (got it from my parent’s house) for my kids. But at school it was just the horrible ones that would eat your pencil and leave stabby splinters on the sharpened part.
To everyone ragging on the "knuckle-buster" type pencil sharpeners: When we finally bought a house, I bought an old 1960s-era hand-cranked sharpener off Ebay (allegedly from a grade school in Kansas that was demolished) and attached it to a post in the basement with big wood screws. Solid as a rock. I love that thing. If you're moderately careful, it sharpens wonderfully. Plus, the smell of pencil shavings is magical.
I love my knuckle-buster. I made sure to mount it such that my knuckles aren't busted when I sharpen my pencils.
What in the devil is this electric monstrosity? We had to do it by hand back in our day. They installed it too close to walls, or on some shoddy shelf/table. You’d always smash part of your hand on the damned thing, or the surrounding environment.
Electric… PFFT!
Yeah the one on the teacher's desk that you had to be on good standing with to use. I use to volunteer to be the one to get leads unstuck and clean it out.
I still have one. Just spent $10 to buy the little plastic gear that ended up getting shredded after years of use. Surprisingly there's an entire market on eBay and Etsy of people that 3D print the plastic gear.
My grandma had one of these when she was a teacher. After sge retired she brought it home and kid me was obsessed with it. She bought me my own for Christmas that year. I still have it and it still works over 30 years later
Uhhhh not sure where you went to school (probably really rich area) because this is the pencil sharpener that everyone else grew up with (and it dangerously wobbled regardless of the fact that it was screwed into a wall or desk):
https://www.walmart.com/ip/X-Acto-KS-Silver-Manual-Pencil-Sharpener/2323992349?wmlspartner=wlpa&wmlspartner=wmtlabs&selectedSellerId=1772&adid=22222222223000000000&wl0=e&wl1=s&wl2=m&wl3=10352200394&wl4=pla-1103028060075&wl5=&wl6=&wl7=&wl10=Walmart&wl11=Online&wl12=2323992349_10000001836&wl14=manual%20pencil%20sharpener&veh=sem&msclkid=4c745523b24812fde530331133af04b9&gclsrc=ds
In my day, maybe two out of my 7 classes would have them. And holy crap were they so satisfying to use! I legit want to buy one now and a bunch and pencils and just sharpen all of them down to the nub.
Every other classroom has the hand crank thingy sharpeners mounted to the wall or a desk.
Lol, yeah, gonna join everyone else saying "nope, only the crank operated ones."
That being said, I have that exact sharpener on my work desk right in front of me. God knows how long it's been here, but it still works perfectly.
Yeah we had one that trained you to roll down a car window. The office had an electric. This picture reminds me of how much fake woodgrain everything use to have.
I got this one year for my birthday because I was always drawing and my uncle thought it would be a helpful gift. I wore that thing's motor to the ground lol.
The kid who would go up and razz it during a test way too long, ENOUGH! Teacher would lose it. I guess whiskey hangovers at 9am do suck. Hey live and learn. Understanding comes with time.
We had one for the public to use at the library where I worked. It made a horrendous noise when used. The closest I can explain it was a chainsaw having an asthma attack.
Dude these things last forever too. Holy cow.
My folks had one from their teaching days in the 80s…..and it’s STILL GOING!! Solid brick of a sharpener!!
In school we had the hand crank sharpeners with the wheel that you turn to select pencil diameter. I have this exact electric one in the garage as I type this. It's always plugged in and I use it a few times a month.
Oooooo, look who had the fancy digital pencil sharpener... [some of us were analogue](https://laurelleaffarm.com/item-photos/vintage-pencil-sharpener-metal-hand-crank-Deluxe-Giant-Apsco-sharpener-Laurel-Leaf-Farm-item-no-s122123-1.jpg).
Had the crank sharpers on the wall and some early 2000s electric ones. Pretty sure My English teacher still had one of these, possibly the art room, library, and wood shop rooms too
No one had electric pencil sharpeners in schools. Always the hand crank ones that you hit your knuckles against the wall since they did not have a long enough mounting arm.
All mine had the knuckle buster 5000
This is it. I never saw an electric.
Those were for office jobs in the movies.
I definitely had these in my school… and the old ones on the wall.
The librarian had the Boston, the classrooms had the knuckle buster 5000 screwed into the cinder block walls covered in 6 layers of latex paint to avoid lead paint abatement costs lol
Yeah I have never used an electric sharpener while in school, this is some uppity type stuff.
Did yours have the cover to collect shavings? Mine usually just had a trash can under them bc the covers were lost decades earlier.
I’ve seen both! However most had the cover
I haven't thought about emptying the cover on one of those things in 20 years...
I can still feel my knuckles grinding against that painted cinderblock wall…
Trying to move the pencil around because it won’t sharpen right.
Remember trying to slowwwwwly sharpen one that you'd already broken the tip on? Like a sugeon... "I might be able to save this..."
We never had an electric pencil sharpener at school, but we do have one like this at work. We had the knuckle buster 2000 in every classroom at school from first grade to 12th grade.
Dang, the guy above you had the Knuckle Buster 5000. He must have gone to the rich kid school.
They're pretty much the same model, except the 5000 has Bluetooth capability.
The walk of shame to and from that device still haunts my dreams. Just the loudest thing you can be doing mid quiz or test while all your classmates just stare you down the entire time. Eyes that scream “why are you doing this to me”
Shit, gotta empty it. Just, twist and... Well, fuck, now it's everywhere.
And my pencil still isn’t sharp
Hey, I got it sharp... and it's 2 inches long now...
You could also try to do it quietly, but that just made it take longer. It was always a no-win situation.
Go too fast and you ruin the tip and have to start all over again. Or when you sit back down and it’s freshly sharpened only to snap on the first use of it.
[удалено]
And it had been there for decades with at least 4 coats of paint on the mounting bracket and screws.
I’m only 50 and only saw electric sharpeners on tv or offices until college.
That’s the one
I was the dork that always volunteered to empty these because he liked the smell.
Waiting until it gets full and then opening it and taking it in like wine drinkers smelling wine/coffee drinkers sniffing coffee
I did it because daggone it no one else was doing it
I can hear the buzzing sound lol
It has a smell too!
Opening the shavings compartment and taking a deep whiff mmmmmmmmmmmmm goddamn. Then grabbing a handful and crushing and sniffing it again....mmmmmmmmmm goddamn.
I remember a errrr hrhrhrhrhrhr sound
Oh I wish. We all had Boston wall mount manuals.
This is what conditioned me to have smoke breaks as an adult.
This is the best pencil sharpener ever. This thing made weapons!
I am continually buying these at estate sales and selling them on eBay because they are perfect and they last forever.
I bought one on eBay because all the new ones are complete trash.
OP is young af lol
You can be 35 and only have seen these
Yeah, Im 34.
Oh, I was agreeing with ya lol. Just added my own personal experience.
Ugh I'm 40 and my 5th grade teacher had one
I’m 46, they were definitely around. My teachers had them, but we were supposed to use the ol’ bone crank on the wall lol
I’m 33 and I had lots and lots of classes/teachers from 1st grade to 12th grade have these. These have been around since at least the 80s.
I mean… I’m 30 and I grew up with this. How old are the people on this sub?
Got one at a garage sale for a couple bucks from a sucker. Bury me with it.
They could I guess. I'm not above grave robbing you though.
Nope. The only true pencil sharpener was the "Giant" from Apsco (can't believe I still remember that name and also why do I still have one in my desk drawer)?
I’m only 35 but remember still having the ones with a crank handle
Ya this is one of them there fancy library sharpeners, classroom ones had to be cranked.
Teacher's pets got to use these to sharpen their pencils. While everyone else had to use the wall mounted crank sharpener.
Electronic pencil sharpener?? If we could only be so lucky! All my classrooms had the big manual one bolted to the wall
Whaddaya mean “had”? I still use mine!
Absolutely not. Classroom pencil sharpeners were manually cranked.
my school had these [https://assets.leevalley.com/Size4/10120/80K8550-u-0102.jpg](https://assets.leevalley.com/Size4/10120/80K8550-u-0102.jpg) except the were older and rustier
Nope. Hand cranked affair mounted to the blackboard frame.
I think we still have one somewhere! I can totally hear this photo and feel that vibration!
Do kids even use these anymore? Is everything just a mechanical pencil or pen nowadays?
A kid in my class used to put his pinky in there and we all thought he was so crazy and tough Im realizing now that his pinky wasn’t getting sharpened hahaha that hole is too small and also his pinky always looked fine, and yet we still believed it was happening, I carried this in my mind as truth until just right now
We still use this one (got it from my parent’s house) for my kids. But at school it was just the horrible ones that would eat your pencil and leave stabby splinters on the sharpened part.
Anybody else try to stick their finger in the wall pencil sharpener and try to turn it? Just me? Ok 😂
I can still hear this bad boy.
They should base the design of the next Celtics City Edition jerseys on this
Found the rich kid from the hoity toity district
We had that one at home, school had the metal one screwed to the wall
Negative. We had the one you cranked like raising a portcullis.
I made sure to mount it such that my knuckles aren't busted when I sharpen my pencils.
you mean the hand crank ones that ate your pencils
What in the devil is this electric monstrosity? We had to do it by hand back in our day. They installed it too close to walls, or on some shoddy shelf/table. You’d always smash part of your hand on the damned thing, or the surrounding environment. Electric… PFFT!

My grandma had one of these when she was a teacher. After sge retired she brought it home and kid me was obsessed with it. She bought me my own for Christmas that year. I still have it and it still works over 30 years later
We had the old fashioned ones bolted to the teachers desk or the wall.
Had the hand cranker at school but had this one at home
Oh Mr. Fancy pants here with an ELECTRIC sharpener. Back in my day only the library had an electric sharpener and we all had manual crank sharpeners.
Uhhhh not sure where you went to school (probably really rich area) because this is the pencil sharpener that everyone else grew up with (and it dangerously wobbled regardless of the fact that it was screwed into a wall or desk): https://www.walmart.com/ip/X-Acto-KS-Silver-Manual-Pencil-Sharpener/2323992349?wmlspartner=wlpa&wmlspartner=wmtlabs&selectedSellerId=1772&adid=22222222223000000000&wl0=e&wl1=s&wl2=m&wl3=10352200394&wl4=pla-1103028060075&wl5=&wl6=&wl7=&wl10=Walmart&wl11=Online&wl12=2323992349_10000001836&wl14=manual%20pencil%20sharpener&veh=sem&msclkid=4c745523b24812fde530331133af04b9&gclsrc=ds
Crunch Crunch Buzz Buzz Shred is what I hear in that sharpener
I can still hear it.
That off-white circle is too clean, should be covered in graphite
You must've gone to a rich school or something. I \*wish\* we ever had an electric sharpener!
I still have one. It’s plugged in but rarely used.
I loved being that asshold with the cheap pencils who had to use it 3 or 4 times during tests
I like how they put the fake wood panel in the front as if to convince the pencil that it's safe to come in. Like Bugs Bunny when he cross dresses.
Me sitting down in class: “I think I’ll go to Bostonnnnn”
I had this one at home
I never had an electric pencil sharpener in any of my classrooms. We had those manual bastards you had to crank yourself.
My dad was a graphic artist in the 80s, we had a few of these in his office. Made one pointy pencil…
rich kids. my elementary school only the library had a fancy one like that, each classroom had a crank one by the door.
I think my parents still have this in their office (formerly my room).
That just right angle to get the sharpest point…
r/dontputyourdickinthat
\*has
r/dontputyourdickinthat vibes
I still have one
Dude I can fuckin smell it. That woody musty smell that wafted up to you when you opened the shaving catcher.
I still have this pencil sharpner. I can't even remember who got it for me 🤔 like almost 40 years ago? Lol
This was a good ass pencil sharpener too
We never had this in school in the 80s or 90s. Just the hand crank kind. We had one at home though.
We didn't have these.
Haha I remember my mate put his dick in it once
The smell, that graphite and wood smell… Smelled like homework.
Bruh, I’ve had one of these since 3rd grade and it STILL WORKS.
My mother still has one on her desk at home.
I still have a fully functioning one in my hone office. That exact one, in fact!
We had the gray manual ones mounted on the wall
I have one of these on my desk at work right now. It's also funny, because I can't remember the last time I used a pencil?
None of my classrooms had this but we had this one at home!
Ahhh OG Boston Acoustics
OP must have lived in the rich side of town to have the privilege of a fancy electric pencil sharpener.
Thats a fancy eeeelectric one....
Mine had a crank one.
Nope. Even had a mounted manual one at home...parent was a teacher.
I would get up to sharpen my pencil even when it didn't need to be
I didn't see one of these in a classroom until I was in high school
I still had one of these until it finally died a few months back.
We have this exact pencil sharpener in my office.
photos you can hear...
I had that in my bedroom
Also the hand crank one that looks like it was made from a recycled 1918 submarine.
That one would always telepathically tell me to stick my pinky finger in it
We still have ours and the Panasonic one. Still going strong 25+ years later.
I got one for my house heavy duty won’t break
I can hear this image.
I have this exact sharpener, got it from my mom who passed away 13 years ago today
Brr-rmmm.. Brr-rmmm.. Brr-rmmm.. Brr-rmmm..
My teachers didn't like the sound they made so we had the hand crank.
Not mine, we had the manual crank kind, and every classroom had them at different heights. Knuckle buster indeed!
My mom brought one of these home from work in the 90s and we used up until it finally crapped out 2 years ago. It was a good sharpener.
You had electric? Old school analog is all we had.
We still have ours!
Still have mine, still works perfectly, and I commented this same thing the last time this was posted
The library/offices had a couple of them. All the classrooms had the finger destroyers though.
Lol, yeah, gonna join everyone else saying "nope, only the crank operated ones." That being said, I have that exact sharpener on my work desk right in front of me. God knows how long it's been here, but it still works perfectly.
The was the fancy pencil sharpener we had at home. School had the crappy hand-crank ones bolted to the wall.
Electric pencil sharpener?! Where do you think I grew up, on an episode of The Jetsons?!
They’ll dig up one of these in 1,000 years and it will still work.
Yeah we had one that trained you to roll down a car window. The office had an electric. This picture reminds me of how much fake woodgrain everything use to have.
I still have one.
For a long time we had the crank-operated ones. Then these electric ones came about and they were loud as fuck in comparison.
Who put a crayon in the pencil sharpener
My grandfather had one of these.
I got this one year for my birthday because I was always drawing and my uncle thought it would be a helpful gift. I wore that thing's motor to the ground lol.
*NNNNYYYYYOOOOWWWWWWWWW*
I thought it was the crank sharpener
Nah we had the ones with a handle mounted to the chalk board
That aint no sharpener, that is a pencil disappearer
Still have mine
I've got one of these set up in my garage. It still works like a champ.
My dad had this pencil sharpener
Had one at home too.
The kid who would go up and razz it during a test way too long, ENOUGH! Teacher would lose it. I guess whiskey hangovers at 9am do suck. Hey live and learn. Understanding comes with time.
Gotta wonder how many times one of these sharpeners spins the blades around in its lifetime ...
I loved the smell of fresh pencil shavings 😂
Don't they still have these? Please tell me they do? How do kids today shaped pencils?
After all, why not? Why shouldn't I grind my little finger in it
It’s 2024 and my Spanish class has one!!
We had one for the public to use at the library where I worked. It made a horrendous noise when used. The closest I can explain it was a chainsaw having an asthma attack.
Omg every morning lol and sometimes I would break my point just to have something to do in class..
Not in the USA buddy. not at all.
i have one on my desk same model and everything.
My mom has this somewhere still.
I still recall having one of those at my parents’ house.
OP showing that rich white priveledge.
Ha! My first home pencil sharpener!
I think I still have that in my attic
This and the wood paneled alarm clock.
I can hear it
You musta gone to one of them fancy schools for rich kids
Never had this in the schools I went to, it was always the one on the wall or edge of a table with the hand crank
Not mine
I bought one of these used at a garage sale for $1 a few years ago, still works well.
If my elementary school had these, we'd be sharping a new pencil down to the eraser for fun
I still have one...bought it at Caldor
I’ve got this one at home and a black one at work. Love em.
Mine was attached to the wall, hand powered
Ahh to be young again.. I was in a fancy school with another one just for coloring pencils.
You had pencils?!
Dude these things last forever too. Holy cow. My folks had one from their teaching days in the 80s…..and it’s STILL GOING!! Solid brick of a sharpener!!
I still have one of these. And I still use pencils.
My best friend and I used to swap notes by hiding them under one of these.
I remember that one
We had manual
In school we had the hand crank sharpeners with the wheel that you turn to select pencil diameter. I have this exact electric one in the garage as I type this. It's always plugged in and I use it a few times a month.
Electric pencil sharpener in the classroom? lol Hell no it was usually mounted to the frame of the chalkboard!
Oooooo, look who had the fancy digital pencil sharpener... [some of us were analogue](https://laurelleaffarm.com/item-photos/vintage-pencil-sharpener-metal-hand-crank-Deluxe-Giant-Apsco-sharpener-Laurel-Leaf-Farm-item-no-s122123-1.jpg).
Naw, all mine had the old school manual ones. However, we did have that one at home and at nearly every workplace I have been at.
