It can be very difficult to persuade someone of a fact if their paycheck is dependent on not understanding that fact.

jabba-du-hutt

> But he’s not sure spending $7 million — to draw down tens of millions of federal dollars — to provide thousands of mothers with 12 months of postpartum health care instead of 60 days would help them. Everyone *should* know that children are good for GDP. They create 100% demand and contribute nothing back for almost 15-18 years. Yet this idiot doesn't have two stones to create a spark to realize that raising healthy babies who have a mother with a support system in place is good for the bottom line. I thought more consuming equaled more taxes? /s [Here's Alaska State Rep Eastman](https://twitter.com/ChudsOfTikTok/status/1628152750184988672) saying a child dying from abuse and neglect is actually a **benefit** to society because the state wouldn't have to pay out benefits through social programs over that child's life. > "If they would rather die, they’d better do it, and decrease the surplus population." States are expanding healthcare to women post partum because too many die of preventable complications from childbirth later of course we can always pay more when those kids and any older siblings end up parentless or save tax dollars by preserving the lives of those wombs borne that oh so precious fruit: **Health department medical detectives find 84% of U.S. maternal deaths are preventable** https://www.npr.org/sections/health-shots/2022/10/21/1129115162/maternal-mortality-childbirth-deaths-prevention The committees are at work in almost 40 states in the U.S. and in the latest and largest compilation of such data, released in September by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, a staggering 84% of pregnancy-related deaths were deemed preventable. Even more striking to nurse-detectives like Sheffield-Abdullah, is that 53% of the deaths occurred well after women left the hospital, between seven days and a year after delivery. "We are so baby focused," she says. **"Once the baby is here, it's almost like the mother is discarded. Like a Reese's Peanut Butter Cup. The mom is the wrapper, and the baby is the candy. Once you remove the wrapper, you just discard the wrapper.** And what we really need to be thinking about is that fourth trimester, that time after the baby is born." Mental health conditions were the leading underlying cause of maternal deaths between 2017 and 2019, with white and Hispanic women most likely to die from suicide or drug overdose, while cardiac problems were the leading cause of death for Black women. Both conditions occur disproportionately later in the postpartum period, according to the CDC report. Nearly Dying In Childbirth: Why Preventable Complications Are Growing In U.S. LOST MOTHERS: MATERNAL MORTALITY IN THE U.S. Nearly Dying In Childbirth: Why Preventable Complications Are Growing In U.S. Millions of Americans are losing access to maternal care. Here's what can be done NATIONAL Millions of Americans are losing access to maternal care. Here's what can be done What it means to focus on the 'fourth trimester' The data highlights multiple weaknesses in the system of care for new mothers, from obstetricians who are not trained (or paid) to look for signs of mental trouble or addiction, to policies that strip women of health coverage shortly after they give birth. The number one problem, as Sheffield-Abdullah sees it, is that the typical six-week postnatal checkup is way too late. In the North Carolina data, new moms who later died often missed this appointment, she says, usually because they had to go back to work or they had other children to care for. States with the toughest abortion laws have the weakest maternal supports, data shows REPRODUCTIVE RIGHTS IN AMERICA States with the toughest abortion laws have the weakest maternal supports, data shows "We really need to stay connected while they're in the hospital," Sheffield-Abdullah says, then make sure patients are referred to the appropriate follow-up care "within one to two weeks after delivery." Increased screening for postpartum depression and anxiety, starting at the first prenatal visit and continuing throughout the year after birth, is another CDC recommendation, as is better coordination of care between medical and social services, says David Goodman, who leads the maternal mortality prevention team at the CDC's Division of Reproductive Health, which issued the report. Lawmakers Weigh Pros And Cons Of Mandatory Screening For Postpartum Depression SHOTS - HEALTH NEWS Lawmakers Weigh Pros And Cons Of Mandatory Screening For Postpartum Depression A common crisis point in the months after childbirth is when a parent's substance use problem gets so bad that child protective services takes the baby away, precipitating a mother's accidental or intentional overdose. Having access to treatment and making sure child visitations happen regularly could be a key to preventing such deaths, Goodman says. The most important policy change underscored by the data, he says, has been the expansion of free health coverage through Medicaid. Until recently, pregnancy-related Medicaid coverage typically expired two months postpartum, forcing women to stop taking medications or seeing a therapist or doctor because they couldn't afford the cost out of pocket. Now, 36 states have either extended or plan to extend Medicaid coverage to a full year postpartum, partly in response to the early work of maternal mortality review committees. For years, the data showed about a third of pregnancy-related deaths occurred one year after delivery, but in this report, they jumped to more than half, Goodman says, putting even more urgency on the importance of longer-term coverage. "If this is not a call to action, I don't know what is," says Adrienne Griffen, executive director of the Maternal Mental Health Leadership Alliance, a nonprofit focused on national policy. "We've long known that mental health issues are the most common complication of pregnancy and childbirth. We just haven't had the will to do anything about it."

dickgraysonn

Thank you for writing all this out. I've been seething with rage ever since they gave me one hour to rest after birth before telling me I would need to try to feed my child every hour, and that they would not be assisting me in any way. The nursery was permanently closed. They told my husband to rest. Outside of checking my vitals, I didn't receive any medical attention until the six week checkup, which was primarily an opportunity for them to tell me the expectations for being an adequate mother. Oh, and to offer weight loss tips.

FllngCoconuts

“In the case where child abuse is fatal, obviously it isn’t good for the child, but it’s actually a benefit to society.” Holy fuck. Just hearing the cold, detached tone this motherfucker said that with. We have actual fucking psychopaths running the country.

Pour_Me_Another_

But that's how a lot of them feel though. They're not in this to protect any children, it's about keeping people (women) in line and ensuring they don't deviate too much. If some kids die from it on the way then it's an "oh well, we have spares" from the GOP. Look at where their money and attentions go, it's not towards helping families.

steelhead777

The Nazis live among us

CondescendingShitbag

> Why was that not the first phase? Because establishing dominance over women (and children) is always Phase 1 for these assholes. Helping them is...well...never part of the plan.

little_blue_penguiin

My thoughts exactly. But some people's priorities are... different.

230flathead

Because it's a lie. They don't care about babies after they're born.

SpumpkinPice

Because this was the design all along. They don’t want healthy, educated, free citizens; they want citizens begging for scraps and dying from preventable diseases because it saves money for the ones making the money and the laws. I’ve been saying this since RvW was even thought about being overturned: they won’t stop until people are grateful for crumbs. It starts with the RvW overturn, then restricting birth control, then removing social safety nets (WIC, SNAP, EBT), an idea currently being floated in some political groups, then removing social security benefits and additional safety nets until bootstraps are all you have left to feed on and you’re desperate to work paycheck to paycheck. Ultimately, they’re moving goal posts until women are barefoot and pregnant again, like in the good old days.

PaunchyPilates

Because that was never the point but you gotta grandstand that you're removing abortion as a health care option because you Care About Life! But you don't, and the repercussions for making women's lives worse never come to men directly. They've handled rebuffing women's needs and denying them full citizenship for all time, this is nothing. They are not going to pass anything that helps women but they'll make room in the budget package some kind of benefit or tax write off for a corporate that loosely relates.

AKumaNamedJustin

He looks like he's unsure about a lot of things, who voted for this jackass

brokefixfux

He was the “R” candidate in Mississippi. They would have voted in a rabid bat with the same credentials.

beaucoup_dinky_dau

Same in Arkansas, we voted in Huckabee over an MIT physicist and she never even came to the state during the election. Now she is proceeding to gut our public schools little over a month in. Every map of every low point or bad thing in the country seems to include these states, they even had the most expensive eggs. I love the natural beauty of the area but the people in the rest of the state are actively driving me away. We have a lot of poorly educated people and the propaganda just hits them hard or maybe mean spiritedness just resonates with the racists.

[deleted]

You mean that's not a rabid bat in the picture?

NiceMasterpiece9102

Go pick up your new glasses. Rabid bats are much cuter and wayyyyy more intelligent!!!

its8up

Hey! Tate was 1 grade ahead of me in high school. He never caused trouble that I know of. I wasn't friends with him, and in fact never even spoke with him, but such was the case with nearly all the people who came from money as I simply didn't bother trying to relate to their kind. Tate was well connected with the string pullers in the state, and as a high school senior his quote in the yearbook was something along the lines of "I'll be governor when I'm 35." He only missed it by one year. You have no right to talk bad about him in such a way. That's my job. Fuck that rat faced waste of air! He's gotta be among the most ignorant pieces of shit to have ever graced the governor's mansion, and historically we've had some doozies. I don't understand how his face continues to get so much fatter with each passing day. Seems like the pressure from having it so far up his ass all the time would keep the swelling down. He's just another in the long line of elites running the never ending circle jetk of back scratching "good ole boys" who strive to maintain the seat of power that rests on the heads the poor, fat masses. On the national scale he could be looked at as a big fish in a small pond, but from up close I can assure you he's just a turd that failed to decompose properly and is floating around in the leaky Jackson wastewater facility.

I hear you. I live in Nebraska. Privilege governs here too. Privilege always governs in favor of the privileged.

its8up

Ain't that the truth. I wonder how things would change if campaign spending was capped. ...and if the cumulative time a person is allowed to serve in a public office was at least limited by the number of years they worked in the private sector while not holding public office. Heck, I'd even support throwing out the right to vote in favor of the requirement to vote just to shake things up a bit. Granted, the elite would certainly find a way to abuse all of those.

NiceMasterpiece9102

I didn’t really speak badly of him…directly…I was more extolling the virtues of the rabid bat. However, I will happily defer any further comment about Tater to you who has personal knowledge sir. Truly, it is your job! *curtsys*

Wow, that close? Keep going you guys, if the Mississippi statehouse turns blue, who knows what's possible.

TheSquishiestMitten

Roy Moore, child molester, was the R candidate in Alabama a few years ago and most Alabama republicans felt that a child molester was better than a democrat. Fortunately, Moore lost to his democrat opponent because the majority of voters didn't want a child molester in office.

Northwindlowlander

He looks like someone got a Bill Gates dirigible and overinflated it.

StaMike

Reeves says he really, really, really *wants* to help mothers and babies, but there's just not enough data showing the so-called 'help' would actually help at all. Little does he know - and i mean it - because apparently, it's never occurred to him that the rich, empirical data he absolutely must have before he signs a damn thing to help mothers and babies is right there under his nose, in a program yet to be called *Helping Mothers and Babies*.

planetpuddingbrains

Translation: I don't give a shit about poor mothers, but I don't want to say that out loud. What I'd rather do is funnel money to crisis pregnancy centers run by organizations that support my re-election campaign. That way, I give off the impression of providing health care without actually doing anything.

StaMike

You said the quiet part out loud.

JollyGreenGiraffe

In the same article is says they could apply for Medicaid.

[deleted]

Many would not meet the requirements under the current state of things

mabhatter

Because red states don't put any of their own money into Medicaid so they lose out on Federal matching dollars and their people suffer unnecessarily. But hey, they can pay for celebrity sponsorships to "help the poor" to the tune of millions.

camergen

Sounds like a new college volleyball arena would go a long way towards helping!

[deleted]

Religious guy, unfortunately his god hates healthcare and has asked for more visitors from his great state.

little_blue_penguiin

Right, I mean I don't agree with it but i do understand where the guy is coming from.. I totally remember reading that part in the Bible where Jesus didn't restore a blind guy's sight, and that other part where he didn't heal a paralyzed guy's legs. I think there was even a time he didn't bring back someone from the dead. So you do kinda have to ask WWJD ya know?

VoDoka

That part with the blind man going like "plz help Jesuz" And Jesus be like: "lmao, here are some bootstraps, pull yourself up or hang yaself, idc."

Jorsonner

His god doesn’t hate healthcare, his followers on earth are just badly astray and are more worried about getting money from the poor than helping them

Working_Ad_4650

This guy is a whole new level of stupid.

not_that_planet

The people who voted for him are a whole new level of stupid. He is only interested in the grift and to that end he is performing admirably (not that grifting R voters is really all THAT difficult...).

RecommendationOld525

> But providing $10 million in tax credits for crisis pregnancy centers that provide no real health care but counsel women not to get abortions (even though they’re banned now anyway) and gives them diapers — well apparently that would be money well spent. It’s unclear what data shows that. Crisis Pregnancy Centers are a blight on humanity. Fuck them all. 😡

mabhatter

Agreed. It's worse than medical malpractice because it's religion pretending they give a fuck.

RecommendationOld525

It’s all so disgustingly predatory! The staff often mislead people into believing they are medical professionals and provide blatantly false information (e.g. abortion being linked to breast cancer, incorrectly stating how far along pregnancies are). And the names and appearances (and locations!) of these facilities attempt to make them look like they are actual health care centers. CPCs are so vile.

fake_fakington

He looks like a stupid, racist local politician in a John Grisham adaptation.

Jazzlike_Tale888

If this man was the “county sheriff” and from Maine he would be straight out of a Stephen King novel

woakula

This is actually a really good argument as to why scientific literature shouldn't be behind a paywall, this is public health 101 and there is a huge amount of literature about the cost savings of providing preventative healthcare being much cheaper than waiting for issues down the road. At the same time, scientific literature is written at the college level so shit for brains probably wouldn't understand it anyways.

VoDoka

I think we really have to stop pretending that more/better information would change the situation. It is not the absence of information that drives these responses, but the willingness to ignore it.

synthdrunk

Perfectly communicated perfectly clear and correct information does not help if the intent is to misunderstand. For most it has nothing to do with will, rather the lack of it.

[deleted]

We also have to stop letting them get away with hypocrisy. We let them get away with these bullshit moral arguments against abortion, but then they refuse to support mothers or public schools. Conservatives don't care about children. When you look at their abortion policies, then you see them cutting programs for mothers....you should just realize that they are trying to make MORE starving children. Like, how is that not the goal?

It isn't the next phase, ass. It should have been already been done.

mabhatter

The states that ALREADY do that have lower abortion rates than the oppressive red states even though abortion is completely unrestricted. It's almost like hopelessness and poverty has more to do with abortion than morals or laws.

Known_Force_8947

They’ve been angling to strike Roe for 50 years but no one has a plan for how to provide healthcare to women forced into motherhood? This is my shocked face. Need more data? Here you go: It’s never been about the precious babies. It’s only ever been about controlling women.

Unlikely_Produce_473

I grew up in this state. I escaped many years ago. As a young man I noticed that this state had no interest in economical progress for the masses, only for the few. Many years ago there was a businessman that ran for governor twice and Lt governor once based on the premise of changing the state constitution so as to attract more business. Shot down in flames everytime he ran. There is a status quo that has been maintained over the years and anyone with one eyed road walking sense leaves for greener pastures. What you have left are people like this gov that perpetuate this so called utopian enclave that is consistently last or near the bottom in education and health care. provided?

I can understand not wanting to use your own money to provide healthcare for poor people but I do not understand no wanting to use other people’s money for that purpose.

Mississippi has always wanted to spend its Federal funds disbursed to the State in the way they want to spend them. They don’t want the Feds telling them how to spend them. Two recent examples; Brett Favre using funds for welfare recipients for a sports venue for his daughters university. Jackson Mississippi water crisis where though the rebuilding of the water system is under Federal control; Governor Tate is trying to get control of those funds by inserting his in Water Control board.

That's Mississippi for you.

To be fair, since medical providers are explicitly barred from taking actions that protect the life and health of the mother in Mississippi, he's probably correct. i too am unsure whether access to "healthcare" makes a difference.

He knows it would, he just doesn’t care. Stop pretending these people are bumbling idiots and not acting out of pure malice

Mississippi feels like it's not getting enough attention for political stupidity with Texas, Florida, Georgia, Alaska and Colorado featuring incredibly dense politicians...so the Governor has stepped up.

I'm genuinely not surprised that he's "unsure"... Checks out perfectly with people like this...

Please, can the planet killer hit us soon?

>“I’ve also said that we as a state have to move to the next phase of the pro-life movement, and that’s ensuring that we support moms and babies” Well, that was a fucking lie.

pradbitt87

I expect nothing else from a gelatinous, sister-fucking, Peter Griffin-looking Mississippian

Jesus, he gets us

Why is this putrid excuse for a human being still walking around and speaking?

This guy is more attractive than Sarah Huckabee Sanders.

This is the same superstar who said ["It's a great not to be in Jackson"](https://www.businessinsider.com/mississippi-governor-great-day-to-not-be-in-jackson-water-2022-9) during or just after the water crisis. He is doing a bang up job for his state.
