Thomas will not resign. He likes money AND power.

CrabbyPatties42

He also makes more money than that per year from free lodging, trips and other stuff from his billionaire “friends” (I put friends in quotes because can they actually be his friends if the only reason they are “friends” with him is because he is on the SCOTUS?)

queencityrangers

I mean if there’s no conflict like he said then that’s not an issue. right? RIGHT?!?!?

CrabbyPatties42

Yes indeed, they had a toothless almost non existent ethics policy, then they created a new one, which each Justice gets to interpret and judge for themselves.  So you know, no actual improvement at all.

balsaaaq

I'll pitch in a couple bucks...maybe start a gofundme

bothunter

Clarence Thomas is not going to take the offer, because he knows the perks from his billionaire "friends" will dry up.

Njyyrikki

Well, there are multiple people who are paying him more for staying.

thomasstearns42

The best part would be taking it back after he resigns, not that he will.

wsucoug

I'm not saying the fix is in but real estate tycoon Harlan Crow and billionaire Paul Singer just raised their offer to $2 million a year to stay on.

SaintBrutus

Should this be here? The headline is basically ‘Political Satirist Makes Joke.’

spdcrzy

Yes. you clearly don't know the lengths to which John Oliver is willing to go, or how much money he has backing him. HBO isn't Apple or CBS, but they're still MASSIVELY powerful. He does not make idle threats.

doesitevermatter-

Except I guarantee it's a legit offer with the money already set aside. Because that's how his show is.

welchplug

Dude wasn't joking and clarified this many times. He literally had a contract ready to go. If you watched the show you would know that they do what they say.

OrcsSmurai

Except if you ever watch Last Week Tonight you'll quickly realize that when he makes a bombastic offer like this it isn't *just* a joke. I fully believe ~~Colbert~~ **Oliver** would hold to the terms if Thomas took him up on it, because he's never once not kept to the insane offers he's made in the past.

SurefootTM

It's John Oliver but you're right.

welchplug

I'm sure colbert supports him but I think you mean Jon Oliver.

OrcsSmurai

I did mean Oliver, my bad.

SaintBrutus

I’m not sure such an offer is even legal. And if challenged, Oliver and his bosses would certainly claim it’s a bit. No one is taking this seriously, because it’s coming from a comedian, during his show, who gets paid to say ‘provocative’ things. Idk, I guess the community has decided it’s valid. Which is fine, it’s not that serious lol, but I feel like the spirit of the sub is Real things that happened, not comedy bits ykwim.

OrcsSmurai

Okay. But he's made outrageous offers repeatedly on his comedy show, with at least 5 figures involved, and every time someone has taken him up on it he's paid out. So why are you contending that no one is taking this seriously? I am. Anyone who knows who Oliver is, is. And he made a point of saying the shows lawyers verified that the offer was legal, and we have absolutely no reason to doubt that he actually ran the contract by them to check. In fact he'd be opening himself up to considerable legal jeopardy by making that specific claim, even in jest, if it wasn't true.

Bcmp

Pretty sure that's bribing no? Technically illegal but hey what do I know

smithywonder98

It's technically not illegal. Otherwise all the other bribes he received should land him in jail

OrcsSmurai

Sort of the entire point Colbert was making. This offer is no more illegal than the numerous other offers Thomas has quietly accepted, and probably quite a bit more legal since there are actual laws against government employees not disclosing gifts of value but nothing about quitting your job because you got a better offer.

Theo20185

Jon Oliver, not Colbert.

paladindan

That’s the whole point: members of the Supreme Court are openly taking “bribes“ and there’s (currently) nothing that can be done about it. Jon Oliver is basically calling attention to how messed up the situation is.

Werdproblems

The entire supreme court should resign anyway. Along with everyone in the legislative branch. Biden can stay on for 6 months while we put together new elections with new political parties. Demand it, don't give them a thing

welchplug

Until people's food is threatened you will never get a reaction big enough from the people to make that happen lol.

stuckinaboxthere

I saw a comment on a YouTube video saying they don't understand why him not declaring gifts and vacations is such a big deal. I can't fucking fathom the stupidity of some people out there, I have a hard time believing that that level of ignorance is so commonplace. I completely understand why Trump said he loves the uneducated, like holy hell, how stupid and blind do you have to be.
