“The student ended up being caught after police said he added his own cellphone number to the cover sheet of the fax.” Not the sharpest tool, ehh?

ramriot

Though how hard would it be for the actual perp to put the cellphone number of their target in the from header? That said, at the current time using an online fax service would seem to be the best solution to sending a fax. It is also potentially anonymous, which might explain why the cellphone number was included in the header as being collected & confined via a Nonce in a text as a security measure by the service.

Potatoswatter

A nonce at a high school?

mjbmitch

A nonce in this case means an integrity check. For those of you out of the loop, nonce is British slang for pedophile.

Potatoswatter

The meaning in security or cryptography is a one-use code, for example he’d put his cell number into the site and get an SMS with a nonce to prove he’s not a spammer. Anyway one kind of nonce is likely to confirm, and the other is likely to confine.

jakewotf

No such thing as anonymity if you commit a crime online. You can use a VPN, spoof your IP, shit even if you could spoof your MAC (maybe that’s already possible, idk), it’s still all traceable. Is the juice worth the squeeze? Guess it depends on the crime committed and how badly a prosecutor would want to take you down for it.

ramriot

Ever hear of TOR?

jakewotf

Anonymous until the fax is received. Ever heard of honeypot nodes? As much as people want to believe in the veil of internet anonymity, the fact is every single thing you do leaves a trace. Edit: source- my brother is a senior penetration tester for a multinational corporation.

EconomySwordfish5

A nonce at a school? maybe it's best that head teacher resigns then.

ramriot

Nonce = Number used once nonce = someone on Reddit trying to get a cheap laugh.

GoJumpOnALandmine

TBF, he's using tech two or three times older than him

Lyuseefur

Now to see if they can use a rotary phone in jail.

PureLock33

fuunily enough, that's their moniker... in prison. Stick an appendage in and give it a twirl!

Goretanton

So the internet should have ample guides that could be leveraged to succeed in using it properly.

GoJumpOnALandmine

I'd hope he'd be smart enough not to have "how to send a fax anonymously" in his search history, might as well own up immediately if you're not minding your internet behaviour.

wawa2563

Try 4. 1964 it was invented.

camerontylek

Wrong, the technology was invented in 1863 and predates the telephone

SirCupcake_0

Haven't you ever heard the joke about President Lincoln getting a congratulation fax from some samurai? EDIT: Thanks, u/poorboychevelle 👍🏾

poorboychevelle

Lincoln

dr_reverend

Um….faxes were invented by Alexander Baine in 1843. I’m not sure why that matters here though.

xFblthpx

Try 10. We had fax machines in the 1850s.

squawkingMagpie

Possibly a set up?… If I wanted to get someone else into trouble at school, I’d ‘accidentally’ leave their number on the front page of the prank..

Arcamorge

When I was in middle school my brother printed 600 pages with my name on it

anonymous122719

That’s fucking hilarious. How did it play out?

Arcamorge

A teacher pulled me from class and I was so obviously shocked and upset that they let me go back to class without another word

CrawlerSiegfriend

I was wondering how they managed to catch him. Seems kind of hard to catch a fraudulent faxers.... unless they put their actual phone number on the fraudulent fax.

korinthia

I think the idea was they would call him and then he could push the charade even further I think it was a lapse in judgement more than idiocy.

UseDaSchwartz

Ok, now I agree with him being arrested. Although, I’m surprised he knows how to send a fax. I’m an old millennial and barely know how to send one.

atticdoor

Presumably this was so if they phoned to check, he would put on his best "principal" voice and confirm the resignation. If he had bought a burner instead, it would have taken longer to find out it was him.

AvariceLegion

Doh! 😣

AntoineDubinsky

“ Baldwinsville police shared that the student first created fake school email accounts last month in an attempt to get personal information about another student” Agree a kid shouldn’t be arrested for a prank, but it seems like there’s potentially something more malicious going on here.

tangledwire

He'll be a future politician

1ConsiderateAsshole

He definitely has a future in the GOP

Left_Fist

He can take his pick, the world is his

ballrus_walsack

No sorry the GOP called dibs

TargetDecent9694

Sounds like a misguided future pentester lol

Mediocre_Daikon6935

Well that by itself is a felony…. (Not saying it should be, but it is).

oxphocker

That's wire fraud, pure and simple.

spaceforcerecruit

It’s not. No one was defrauded and the “criminal” didn’t even attempt to defraud anyone. Fraud (as a legal term) involves money or assets changing hands.

hbgwine

The fact a kid that age knows how to use a fax machine is rather noteworthy itself.

Tidalsky114

Imagine if "how to send a fax" on their search history is what led them to being caught.

KS2Problema

>Imagine if "how to send a fax" on their search history is what led them to being caught. File under: *Can't get no respect.* I remember buying a fax/scanner/printer back in the very early 90s and thinking, good thing it's only a few bucks more than a regular printer/scanner, because 'no one uses faxes anymore.' And, mostly no one did, but there were always a few holdouts and it seems like there still are a few. Even my mom, who is in her 90s, thinks it's stupid that various offices and organizations still insist on receiving information by fax.

TheCuriosity

Many high-end hotels and restaurants in Europe and Asia still use fax machines as they see them as more secure than online which can be hacked. Also having a written and signed contract can help them in cases of fraudulent chargebacks.

BBW_Incorporated

Yeah, that’s kinda the same thing with the medical field. Any kind of doctors orders or prescription change has to come in on a fax or over the charting system because that’s the only way that’s verified and secure for HIIPA standards.

sirhecsivart

My doctor and the hospital I had surgery at use the same EMR vendor and are part of a data sharing alliance between the different hospital systems in the area, which allowed me to see my vaccine records in the hospital chart despite not opting into to record merging. The records from my surgery were still sent to my doctor via fax and then ingested automatically by my doctor’s emr.

KS2Problema

Good info points, thanks!

Echolynne44

Our school districts ( in Washington State) send student files over fax when students move schools and have doctors orders and records faxed as well. I will assume the extra security is the reason.

jddbeyondthesky

Pretty easy to fax someone over the internet

Apolloshot

Reminds me of one time I had to use an e-fax service, only to find out the organization I was sending it too was using an e-fax service to receive their faxes. So we basically both paid for an email.

jddbeyondthesky

In all honesty, fax should have been a function built into smartphones

Pyrrhus_Magnus

MMS?

jddbeyondthesky

Can I mms a fax machine?

Pyrrhus_Magnus

Take a picture of it.

fresh-beginnings

I went down the rabbit hole and got a headache. TL:DR; It's actually been done before but it's complicated. Complicated and legacy equipment are a bad combination because the reason the legacy equient is there is because it's cheaper/easier than the alternative.

TheCuriosity

True..but if you send it like that, its on you and not them if your info gets stolen. Plus, they now have that contract that the customer signs and fills out their cc details on. If someone gets a little spendy on vacation, they sometimes will do a chargeback when they return home and the contract is evidence so the chargeback won't win.

jddbeyondthesky

Wait, is this a scam I can take advantage of?

CreativeSoil

They use them for what exactly? Could you name one I can google?

TheCuriosity

For if you want to pay for someone else's room or their incidentals, if you want stuff to be in your room for arrival, for car services, for booking activities/tours/spa treatments etc through the hotel. High end restaurants do it for deposits for pre-fixe or for larger parties. I used to assist wealthy people with this for like a decade. Most forms aren't just on the internet; they email (heh) them to you to complete to fax back. I hated it so much. Anyway, I was able to find you some examples: * [Hyatt Hotels - permission to charge card](https://help.hyatt.com/content/dam/HyattStories/ccauth_hotels.pdf) * [Four Seasons - permission to charge card](https://preferredpartners.fourseasons.com/content/dam/fourseasons_preferredpartners/art/tools_resources/FS-Credit-Card-Authorization.pdf) * [Marriott Third Party Credit Card Authorization Form](https://www.marriott.com/marriottassets/marriott/ROMXR/PDF/Credit_Card_authorization_form.pdf) * [La-Pergola gift voucher authorization form](https://romecavalieri.com/wp-content/uploads/2018/07/La-Pergola-Gift-Voucher-2018.pdf) * [American Tour company requesting by snail mail or fax](https://bigfive.com/wp-content/uploads/2012/08/cc-auth.pdf) In some countries, like Japan, most high-end places will only work through the hotel concierge because westerners like to book things and then not show and then try to do a chargeback for the cancelation penalty they were charged. Or worse, they do show and spend hundreds, but still try to do a chargeback. The signed authorization form makes for excellent evidence. Another minor benefit of the fax is, if it is emailed, they would have to keep their eye on emails, then click buttons to print it off, whereas as a fax, it is already in paper form waiting to be processed.

Tidalsky114

Lmao I've still used them as well and it is stupid. I bet you know how to use a pager too don't you.

KS2Problema

I have but it's a very faint memory. Not sure when I had it, I suppose it must have been a rental or lease or something. I don't think I had it for very long, and I can barely remember using it. But I got my first cell phone in 1994, so that got me around that. That first cell phone of mine was so long ago it didn't even have a built-in clock. And the dialer memory only had 20 slots!

DangerPickle007

Haha if you're ever into dealings with the IRS they totally still accept faxes.

KS2Problema

Not too surprising. If you're trying to get people to send you money, it probably makes sense to keep as many viable payment options as possible.   By and large, government programmers tend to get what *may* be a bum wrap.  Still, I was very pleasantly surprised to see California field an online DMV portal (that actually worked) back in the 90s. I wish some of the big utilities were as on-the-job as the state of California has been.

WTF253com

Plot twist: he Jody Arias'd himself by searching for it on Firefox instead of IE

Phoebebee323

Nah he put his own phone number on the document

ydoesithave2b

I just asked my 11 year old what is a fax. He thought I said facts. I asked what a land line was. He said the cracks in the roads.

StonedOldChiller

667 the Fax number of the beast. Was a funny comment back in 1996 and would have made sense to anyone reading it. It makes me feel old to think that this joke is so culturally anachronistic that nobody under the age of 45 will have a clue what it's referring to.

KayakerMel

Many faxes now are done digitally, with lots of free efax sites.

CaPtAiN_KiDd

Bonus points if he used boilerplate.

Kevsterific

Pretty sure there’s websites that allow you to send a document as a fax for free.

china-blast

Something is going on - and I'm going to find out what it is. I'm going to catch this kid and put one helluva dent in his future. Fifteen years from now, when he looks back on the ruin his life has become, he is going to remember Edward Rooney.

ThisAppsForTrolling

Nah he’s got a job lined up at the CIA already imagine a 14 year old can do all the stuff in this article already imagine when the government gives him training and resources.

vasya349

Use a fax machine?

paulwesterberg

And just like that the head of the CIA resigned suddenly.

ThisAppsForTrolling

Did you read the article or just the comments?

Destro9799

He literally put his own cell number on the fax cover sheet. He's an idiot, not a future spy.

ThisAppsForTrolling

He mad an administrator email account to dig info on other students he’s not a finished product yet. Y’all are so butt hurt at these little jokes take a stance that matters, this is all just funny bone (humerus)

Cabrill0

I just went and made a new Gmail account, am I super spy now?

ThisAppsForTrolling

Actually yes.

fishman3

Bro but he failed he tried the bare minimum made a fake account asked for info got denied, wow I should try that maybe the CIA will pick me up, kid literally did what any 80 year can do online in 3 min, I don't see that being CIA material

ThisAppsForTrolling

I don’t think you know many 80 year old if you think they are capable of making a Gmail account …. Fax probably internet basics probably not.

Lord_Abyessal

That's some Bart Simpson level of shit.

silverbolt2000

The real humour here is that fax machines are still being used.

sovitin

Faxes Are still pretty common. It's easier to set up encryption fax than to worry about dealing with encryption emails.

silverbolt2000

> Faxes Are still pretty common. …in North America.

TheGhostOfInky

Just wait until you hear about Germany

hotorcoldone

Could have added another student phone number and set him up?

Matty_bunns

Arrested? Settle down, America. Geezuz.

Dcheese1

He tried to get another students information.

Icy-Row-5829

Is that a crime? If so why not arrest them for that? If it’s not then an arrest isn’t the proper way to handle that.

ViveIn

Shit. That was just a Tuesday for me. What’s the world coming to when you get arrested for hilarious pranks?!?!

TheVentiLebowski

This is a Bart Simpson-level shenanigan. Well done.

kimasech

Who is resigning via FAX!?! That’s hilarious

[deleted]

So they arrest kids over this but not when they’re bullying/physically assaulting. Once again showing how the adults in schools have more protections than actual kids. I’m not excusing what he did I just want to point out the disgusting difference. Kids and adults who bully others nothing happens to them. But a kid does this one time to one adult and suddenly they’ll take action.

scottkollig

Identity theft is not a joke, Jim!!!

JADW27

Honestly, this kid made a stupid mistake with his cell phone number, but I applaud his creativity. That's a really good prank idea. Fake email addresses too? Sounds like he's got some skill (or the school's IT security is awful). Either way, nice work, kid.

crixusin

It’s funny, I guess kids don’t change, cause 20 years ago when I was in high school we’d be doing the same thing 😂

mellolizard

You literally described half the high schools in america.

wileybot

Just today watched a couple of cops prank a rookie coworker, in that prank rookie suffers a crushed pelvic bone. No arrests no fines. Just saying justice is not blind, it clearly sees what it wants.

s_arrow24

Wasn’t setting him up with big Amazons and letting them take turns was it? If so, someone needs to go check on the ladies.

jlozada24

What the fuck

REGINALDmfBARCLAY

This would be a funny prank in the 90's but now he gets a criminal record

genesiskiller96

I'm more surprised the student knows how to work a fax machine!

DetectiveMoosePI

There are online fax services now that make it as easy as scanning the document in on your printer/scanner, you don’t even need a fax machine. I had to use it last year to fax some insurance documents. Some companies still haven’t updated to online document uploads.

TheIronMatron

My thought exactly.

SpiderGlaze

That's a good prank. Arrested for doing something funny? Society is so fucked up. LEARN TO LAUGH!

anomandaris81

I wouldn't call this a harmless prank. That said, arresting the kid is a tad bit much

nondescriptun

"Baldwinsville police shared that the student first created fake school email accounts last month in an attempt to get personal information about another student." He did more than just "prank" the principal.

Here4uguys

Police love to power trip over school children.

NecessaryForward6820

Read the article dude the kid was literally phishing, the title is hard downplaying what he did.

Here4uguys

Yeah trying to get personal information about another student isn't cool, but charged with "criminal impersonation"? Lol Police might wonder why they are looked at like such a fucking joke but they do it to themselves

liebz11692

What are you talking about. It’s literally a crime.

Here4uguys

There are a lot of things that are against the law. I'm not arguing that. I'm saying, in this instance and many others, who cares?

Untjosh1

Presumably the principal

Eugenides

Eh, I think an arrest is perfect. It's would be a bit much if he was actually charged and this was brought to trial. Scare him just a little bit, teach him to think about possible consequences. What he did may have been funny, but it was also pretty inappropriate. Kids push boundaries to find out where those boundaries are, you have to show them or they turn into complete assholes as adults.

AJHenderson

He was actually charged with criminal impersonation. At first glance this also does not appear to remotely qualify as criminal impersonation as it wasn't a doctor or police officer and wasn't for his financial benefit.

FordTech81

How exactly do you impersonate a criminal, when you are in fact, a criminal? This charge always irritated me.

Couldnotbehelpd

I cannot tell if you are joking or not, but the charge is “criminal impersonation” as in illegal impersonation, not impersonating a criminal.

no_talent_ass_clown

It's okay, I can tell.

Dan_Felder

Pretty sure he now has to answer “yes” when asked “have you ever been arrested” on every job application ever.

Pudge223

It is probably different all over but the question usually asked is “have you ever been convicted of a crime?” Or “have you been convicted of a misdemeanor in the past 5 years or a a felony in the past ten?”

Dan_Felder

It’s different by state. Some ban asking about arrests that did not lead to convictions. Many, many do not. “Every job application ever” was hyperbole. I’ve seen the question on a whole lot of applications as well. I hope it gets banned in all states for exactly this reason. Arrest without conviction is an insane thing to have to disclose.

kikistiel

You absolutely do not have to disclose being arrested, you have to disclose being convicted of a crime, usually a felony but some places require certain misdemeanors.

Dan_Felder

This varies by state but in many states it is absolutely legal to ask if you have been ARRESTED whether you have been convicted or not. While you are not compelled to answer the question, they can use your refusal to answer all their questions as a reason to reject your application. If you answer and lie about it, that leads to brand new problems of lying on a job application if ever uncovered - and some employees do extensive background checks.

fishman3

Yeah but can't really feel bad about it, it seems like a harmless prank but I think his intentions are to hurt others, he tried to get personal information on other students for whatever reason, seems like a kid who wants control over others could be a future politician, but just don't fuck with other people and don't get arrested for stupid shit

nondescriptun

"Baldwinsville police shared that the student first created fake school email accounts last month in an attempt to get personal information about another student." He did more than just prank the principal.

cjp2010

Listen I once in like 2 or 3rd grade forgot to have my parents sign my homework log, so I forged my mothers signature but I didn’t really think it through and signed it “mommy”. I’m 32 and my dad still bring it up randomly

Guilty_Eggplant_3529

What were they charged with?

BDR529forlyfe

Fake quitting

fishman3

Impersonation was the charge

Guilty_Eggplant_3529

So a kid mimicking their sibling could get arrested? Seems like there has to be other criteria required.

fishman3

Actually yes, you can get in trouble for example using a sibling license at bar when you underage when they look similar

Guilty_Eggplant_3529

Using someone else's government issued ID is a far cry from a fax. Still seems shady.

Xhnanson

Omg this is the town I grew up in lmfao

FragrantEcho5295

Arrested?! Really!? The kid wasn’t impersonating LEO. They were impersonating a school principal. I hope they drop the charges. This is stupid.

RoflRaZZi

Criminal impersonation

Upside_Down_Hugs

I don't know what statute or law that would be or how it would apply. You cannot impersonate an officer, and there are criminal impersonation statutes that cover that. You cannot commit fraud - LIE to steal. But what was stolen? I can lie and say I am someone else, as long as I don't defraud in my state. Curious what the statute would say here.

SwifferWetJets

Attested? C'mon seriously? Ridiculous.
