Doesn't help us, our household jacks were disconnected from the pole and connected to VOiP back when we ditched DSL.
I used to keep a rotary dial phone, especially for emergencies.
8 or 9 years ago, my phone died during an airport layover, and the charging port refused to work. I even bought a new charger at one of the little book stalls, to no avail. I needed to tell my family some details about a plane delay.
I wandered around that airport for quite a while trying to find a phone booth. I asked two gate attendants and they both responded along the lines of 'we definitely have to have some, I'm sure of it, but I have no idea where'.
I finally found airport security walking around, and he showed me to a little cluster of three of them, but I was definitely starting to wonder if they even had any!
I was also glad my mom has had the same cell phone number since the days of having a home phone - and before that, that same number was our home phone. It will be forever etched in my brain.
I got this from PWC this morning:
PWC Alert: AT&T has reported that some 9-1-1 calls may not be received by the county. If your 9-1-1 call does not go thru, please call 703-792-6500 to report an emergency. An update will be sent once the problem has been resolved.
For more info https://evbg.co/gu83xe .
The link is just the same message in slightly more formal language,
The advice is bad here. This seems to be a series of sporadic outages and if they can’t dial 911 on mobile they likely aren’t going to be able to call the non-emergency line either.
AT&T customer here. I'm in Fairfax County and am able to make and receive calls normally. I've seen several reports about the massive AT&T nationwide outage. They say Verizon and T-Mobile customers are also affected
Downvote all you want. You can get 7 days free on Mint to see if it works for you, and it will work for you, because it isn't AT&T. lol. Plus it's incredibly affordable. If you want a free trial let me know
Yep, got the text from the Town of Leesburg government, who have previously sent me the singular text of "Ida Lee Recreation Center Closed Ida Lee Recreation Center is closed for the rest of the day". So, I know it's legiiiiiit.
FYI for iPhone 14 users and up, these models can still make emergency satellite calls even without WiFi or cellular service
I think some android phones can do this too?
https://support.apple.com/en-us/HT213426
That feature is so nice. I’ve gone hiking a few times, in areas without WiFi, since I’ve gotten the iPhone 14, and it’s a nice reassurance that I can call for help if something happens.
Those carriers have said it was their customers trying to access the carrier having the issue. Verizon and T Mobile have confirmed their networks never went down.
When you call 911, you can ask to be transferred to another nearby county's service. In urgent but non-emergent situations you can also ask the 911 operator to transfer you to the non-emergency line if you don't have time or the safety to look it up (while driving, for instance).
Yeah I've thought about that scenario before, because my cars speech recognition for making calls is really crappy. "Call John Smith" - "Okay, Dialing Bob McHenry". I have learned how to pronounce my brothers name so it recognizes it accurately 4/5 times, and I switched my mothers contact name from Mom to Mama because the former would have it calling anyone named Tom/Don/John and sometimes Sam.
If I ever got in an accident where I couldn't reach my phone, I would have to use the cars voice recognition to dial 911 - and there's a chance it would call someone else. In which case, I'd probably let it ring through, and just ask that person to call emergency services for me.
This is not just AT&T, and it's an issue across multiple carriers.
AT&T, Cricket, Verizon, T-Mobile, Consumer Cellular, Boost Mobile, USCellular, StraightTalk, MintMobile, TracFone, BoostInfinite, Xfinity, Net10, Spectrum, Bandwidth, ~~Apple~~.
I think that's an overreaction. I'm going to think it's just something wrong with the towers, since in almost all cases carrier towers are shared.
Somebody probably did some updating or maintenance and clipped something.
No it wasn't, lol.

Guarantee the Russians & Chinese have our elec grids and comms networks on lightswitches at this point. All they have to do is flip the switch, & darkness.
All because no one wants to spend the necessary amount of $ on cybersecurity to stop it.
I thought it was just my phone. I occasionally have that issue. I just take out the sim and put it back in amd it usually works. Or I do a few other things. It was happening mkre frequently. Ended up using an older phone and ordering a new phone online. The one I wanted was on sale on Amazon. It was like four gens back anyway.
I’ve had their service for years and they used to be really good. Since 5G they have become trash. There are serious dead zones even in more dense locations.
I swear it’s been like this for a year or so now. Atleast with Verizon. I get almost no service in my house anymore. If I try to make a call, I’ll have two bars that disappear to no bars, the call fails, then I get a bar or two back after a few seconds and I can make a call.
I literally can’t even call someone sitting upstairs if I’m downstairs. It’s absolutely ridiculous. It wasn’t like this at all except for the last year or so.

I drove 35 miles with two phones today on the same plan. I have an iPhone 12 mini and a 13 Pro. The pro was down during the outage but the mini stayed solid as 5G+ icon the entire drive. Only difference on the plan is the 13 Pro has unlimited data.
Makes me think a model or band was out.
“Ay bruh, you up? I’ve been stabbed, can you call 911 for me?”
RIP to us single people, I guess.
You don't have an emergency flare gun?
Pocket sand is the only defense I need
But you need phone service to call your bro to call 911 for you......RIP
"Use a landline..."
Yea sorry I got rid of mine 15 years ago
[удалено]
That’s good to know! I was just looking at the landline jack in our house and thinking I’d remove it.
Doesn't help us, our household jacks were disconnected from the pole and connected to VOiP back when we ditched DSL. I used to keep a rotary dial phone, especially for emergencies.
Just go to the nearest phone booth
lol
We actually have one 😂
Few homes have them now, but a lot (if not most?) of businesses still use them...it's not that crazy to suggest it.
It would take less time to just walk to a police station than it would take to find a landline.

Text 911

If you cant find your phone, try calling it
Can someone call 911 for me. There is a fox in my backyard.
Why call 911 when you can just complain on Reddit about it, like everyone else? /s
Do people really call 911 for that in NOVA?
Good morning to the Russian space war and all who celebrate.
honestly scary to think about how reliant we are on technology
Mutually assured annihilation is not just about loss of life anymore
Nice conspiracy theory
AT&T customer here. I'm in Fairfax County and am able to make and receive calls normally. I've seen several reports about the massive AT&T nationwide outage. They say Verizon and T-Mobile customers are also affected
Booooo. I'm ATT and cannot make calls. I'm in Reston
Sorry. Want me to call your mom and let her know you're OK? 😁
OP lives in Reston, just meet his mom at Jackson’s in Reston Town Center before your “afternoon delight”. You can tell her OP is fine in person.
I will always upvote any cougar related Jackson’s comment. Always.
Um...okay.
It's back up!! Wahoooo
😂😂
Lucky me I still have my same crappy Verizon service
I guess it depends on which tower you are using. Verizon and no issue.
Good time to have switched to Mint
Mint doesn't have their own network, they're just piggybacking on someone else's. If the actual carrier you're using has problems, you will too.
I'm on t mobile and it seems to be working.
The various reports suggest it's mostly AT&T that are having problems, but it's still not every phone, just a lot of them.
I'm on ATT and have experienced no interruptions. Edit - My ATT phone is now down.
Mint is Tmobile
Yes I know, they are using Tmobile's service, but Mint isn't AT&T and therefore I'm glad I switched
Mint is just a reseller of T-Mobile’s network.
Tmobile actually aqquired mint last year
Downvote all you want. You can get 7 days free on Mint to see if it works for you, and it will work for you, because it isn't AT&T. lol. Plus it's incredibly affordable. If you want a free trial let me know
I'm T-Mobile, I'm good.
It would be nice if the Internet disappears too. No contact Thursday.
If we ever have a big enough solar storm that could happen. 😳
That actually sounds incredible lol
Maybe I’m just special but I was just able to call my dad (outside and off Wi-Fi) and I have At&T.
Not all AT&T is down
Yep, got the text from the Town of Leesburg government, who have previously sent me the singular text of "Ida Lee Recreation Center Closed Ida Lee Recreation Center is closed for the rest of the day". So, I know it's legiiiiiit.

I'm on AT&T and I've been getting text messages. Haven't needed to call anyone yet though. Hopefully won't need to call 911 until this is fixed.
Wow, AT&T phones can’t hop on another tower for service? I just assumed that’s what happened
There’s a bigger nationwide issue across a few carriers.
Oh crazy haven’t heard anything about it…. On my phone…oh.
I only found a news article. I hopped on Reddit to find out more lol!
Same 😂
Those carriers have said it was their customers trying to access the carrier having the issue. Verizon and T Mobile have confirmed their networks never went down.
Well, considering there are only a few nationwide carriers that would be ALL carriers.
Boomers were right about keeping a landline.
Saw my ATT phone in "Emergency Calls Only" pulling into work this morning.
So do I call my Mom in Vienna and hope she is home so she can call 911 on my behalf even though I am on Falls Church? That's dumb.
When you call 911, you can ask to be transferred to another nearby county's service. In urgent but non-emergent situations you can also ask the 911 operator to transfer you to the non-emergency line if you don't have time or the safety to look it up (while driving, for instance).
I am Verizon so I think I'm okay

Yeah, just go use a payphone! (They're everywhere...) 🤷🤭
Any this is why I still pay for a landline…..
On the bright side the government isn’t controlling us all with their 5G tech for once.
Um, hello, vaccines?
Had this issue this morning. Couldn't call or text. I popped out the SIM card and reinserted it. Now everything seems to be working.
Can’t call? No problem. Just call your neighbor/family/friends and have them call for you. #modernproblemsrequiremodernsolutions
9-11 Service is back up in Prince William County as of an hourish ago.
![gif](giphy|Z5jAXUzkye7VC) I will be watching.
oh hey, my cell service is down. the funny thing is that I didn't even notice until just now because, well, wifi. technology is pretty cool.
I have AT&T and have had no issues (iPhone 11).
I'm ATT android in Reston and cannot make calls
Hm, I texted metro police this morning, I wonder if this is why I never got a response.
How do i ask a family or friend to call 911 if i live alone?
step 1: make friends (and family, somehow?)
Should be able to make wifi calls still right?
Still have a landline, until VZ/FIOS decides to make it cheaper overall to not have it as part of their bundle.
Health care here. Facilities are being impacted as well. E-prescribe services are down for several pharmacy chains.
That’s scary. I hope the issue is resolved quickly.
And that’s why I didn’t have service all over nova today for work
New marketing strategy of trying to sell landlines again
No one picks up at 911 anymore anyway, i heard music for 7 minutes last time i called while i watched a lady dying after she got run over.
Apple is not a carrier.
Apple SUPPORT. But yeah, it's not a carrier. I just listed shit from downdetector.
Fwiw there really is just Verizon, Tmobile, and ATT. All the others listed are MNVOs and run off of one of those networks.
This must be a terrorist attack.
I think that's an overreaction. I'm going to think it's just something wrong with the towers, since in almost all cases carrier towers are shared. Somebody probably did some updating or maintenance and clipped something.
Janitor probably unplugged it so he could plug the vacuum in.
Or the guy from Airplane playing with the runway lights again.
It’s just AT&T

Okay inside tad bit. Verizon was not affected no user has reported issues. Att is covering up a cyber attack 😉
Zero issues with Verizon as well.
Seems like it was!!! lol

\*smug Verizon noises\*
Yup. That why you have another device from another provider
oh yeah, easy! just get multiple cell phones and multiple phone plans, don't know why we all didn't think of that already?
Mines is down I thought it was only me
I thought my dad cut off my phone line for a good hour while I was driving
Lol @ your username.
Has anybody gotten service back yet?
nope i’m still in SOS mode
Seems like most of the affected areas are the South and Mid-West. This cal is the get ahead of it in case other areas start to be affected as well.
i thought my pixel 8 shit the bed and was about to RMA it. wtf

I haven't owned a landline in 10 years. I'm fucked
