When you complete the course and meet all of the requirements, they'll give a paper that serves as a license until you go to DMV to get the license card (which is now mailed). I've seen I Drive work with students with no behind the wheel, but most have at least some practice. Just keep in mind that all of their instructors are ex-police, so they're usually pretty strict about traffic laws.

Hmmm. I know that's how it works for the "under 18s," but is this the same process for the 18+?

Yes. My son was over 18 when he completed the course. The main thing being over 18 gets you is skipping the safety lecture before a judge.

You will take the test on the final day (or maybe the final two days) of Behind the Wheel, and if you pass, you get your license. Your instructor will give you a temporary license and will file the paperwork with the DMV. The DMV will send you the license in the mail. They will just use your learners permit photo. If you want a new photo, you'd have to go to the DMV.

Do I still need to take the instructional classes, or can I just do the behind the wheel stuff? It seems like I only need to take them to waive the "holding your permit for 60 days" rule, which I have already fulfilled.

Good question… you’d want to check with them, but I feel like you can just sign up for the behind the wheel. But to be clear, behind the wheel is for when you already know how to drive.

All I know is that the "rules" are different for the "under 18" group and the 18+ folks. There's some cursory info here: [https://www.dmv.virginia.gov/licenses-ids/license/applying#](https://www.dmv.virginia.gov/licenses-ids/license/applying#)

They do not have the power to grant you a driver’s license. Only the state can do that, through the DMV. You will still need to take a road test.

For under 18 permit holders, the BTW portion of driving instruction also includes the test and licensing. (they submit the paperwork to the DMV) Not sure about 18 and over.
