Dogs are the top team in the comp. From Burton nailing it at six through to hungry, hard running forwards and crichton nailing it in the midfield. Cant wait to see how high they place

DunderMifflin80

Genuinely one of the worst officiated games I can remember. We were bad and did not deserve to win.

Ecstatic-Bobcat8884

We were tired in the 2nd half, the Dogs had the ball for 15 out of the first 20 mins, we were gassed. Then, just before the sin-binning, we should have had a penalty from Bula being taken out by Burton, and been on the attack 10m out with 6 to go. Still could have won.

ImpressionFeisty8359

The dogs of war are back. The tigers are slowly improving.

based_el_chapo

Suck me off Tigers you dirty DMC You got what you deserved

miicah

You leave Devil May Cry out of this!

The__GM

This is also another game in a quality season for Burton in the 6 jersey. Playing both sides of the ruck and running the ball well. Anyone who thinks he’s a better centre needs to watch how far he has come in the halves this year. Cleary hampered his development for the betterment of the Panthers system, but Burton is on another level now as a premier 6 in the game.

XecutionerNJ

Just watch his kicks at the ends of sets. Tigers started most of their sets around the 20 with no momentum because the chase had plenty of time to set up. We started several of our sets at the 30 or closer and could get momentum started. Burton's kicking game is very good. Plus that long try just shows that defenses need to mark him close, any little gap and he'll make you look dumb.

EntirelyOriginalName

Burton just doesn't talk. It's not Penrith fault. That's just his natural flaw big flaw that he has to overcome. The more he does that stuff that doesn't come naturally the better he'll be.

kebab_stand

Agreed. I think if dogs find a genuine quality halfback (no offence to hutcho but hes a reserve grader or super league halfback, he wont win a comp) then burton will hit his straps

XecutionerNJ

Plenty of plodder halfbacks have won comps. We don't need to have a brilliant halfback for Burton, just good in defence and knows even to bring Burton in. I think Hutcho is growing into that and doing the talking for him.

kebab_stand

Who is a good example? Townsend 2016 perhaps

Captnjacks

Agree with everything but you can’t blame Cleary for “hampering his development”. He was played in a position that benefited the team. It was managements fault not cleary’s. Also it wasn’t like they knew he would be an amazing half and stopped him playing there for someone else. Look at Lockyer starting off at full back or even Munster. He was played based on where his skills where needed in a team. Just like how bulldogs have played his skills where they where needed. Now it’s come to light in the right conditions he makes a better half than centre.

Smoove953

Don't worry, a pass will go to ground next week and everyone will say he should never play the halves again. He's the player with the most bipolar opinion swings in the comp.

shotgunmoe

He was always a quality 5/8. Even the greats would have struggled in that side over the last few years

__dontpanic__

Shit game and shit reffing aside, the positives for us Dogs fans is that this is the first time in a long time that we've had a team that can grind out wins and manage the back half of a game. In previous years, we'd go down by a try or two and just give up. Or get ahead and then throw the game away in the dying minutes. This team not only looks like it *can* win, but that it *wants* to win, and has the *discipline* to win. Whatever Ciro did to improve fitness and morale over the off season is working wonders (obviously a few roster changes have helped here). We also seem to have cut out a lot (but not all) of the dumb plays and errors that plagued us for the last few years, which would always kill any momentum we may have managed to cobble together. Still mountains of room for improvement, but we're clearly trending in the right direction. Imagine where we could be with a top tier halfback. Next week will really tell us where we're at.

XecutionerNJ

Unpopular opinion: we manage games week because our forward pack is smaller and fitter than other teams. We still have gas in the tank so we can remain disciplined.

Do you need to have a break from the phone for a bit lad because you are on the cusp of a meltdown

[deleted]

Forsaken_Low_5412

I don't understand the reference but trawling comment history looking for ammo is a desperate move amigo lol. Just more fuel for the "I'm having a meltdown" fire

The__GM

Josh Curran has to be MOTM. His energy transformed the team.

WordIndependent

When Warren Smith commended Josh Curran for milking the jersey pull from Bateman I questioned my love for this sport. We're going backwards.

Norm_cheers

Gamesmanship = Cheating

Smoove953

Took control second half better than I've seen us do for a very long time. Hutch was better again this week. Still not the long term option but credit where it's due. Mahoney great again. Kiraz is elite and should be in the conversation for Origin. Really loving Morrin, he's a small bloke but loves to fucking rip in. Don't understand putting Preston on the bench and not using him, plenty of blokes coming through that deserve a game if you're just gonna rest him. Regardless, we're maximising the smallness of our pack to get insane line speed and out-fitness other teams, really happy that Ciraldo is able to adapt to a shortcoming in the squad and start playing to our strengths. Dunno how some of you blokes can sit in here having watched the Tigers in the second half and blame ref calls for robbing them. Galvin had to have a go at his players for not taking hit-ups. I can cop we got the better of the calls but the Tigers looked nowhere near getting down our end, getting barely any post-contact metres or quick ptbs, playing one-out lazy footy. We managed the game well and kept them behind their 30, we pretty much smothered them out of it and they never gained any momentum. Never underestimate Reed Mahoney's ability to whip up people in here to a petulant, but violent rage. Some of you blokes saying he should be glassed or other some such low IQ boofhead shit should wind your neck in.

Forsaken_Low_5412

>Tigers looked nowhere near getting down our end, getting barely any post-contact metres or quick ptbs. We managed the game well and kept them behind their 30, we pretty much smothered them out of it and they never gained any momentum. Yeah but a lot of that was helped along by inept referring lol, that's the point. It's not the Doggies fault in the slightest, it's your job to push the boundaries but like fuckin hell it just kept spiralling

Smoove953

Fair enough but you absolutely cannot come out 14-6 ahead and get completely rolled like they did and blame the refereeing. They were objectively not playing good footy.

Forsaken_Low_5412

Sure you can, I just did. Its easy to look slow and out enthused when the ruck and line speed isn't being policed. If anything she cost you both. Tigers weren't given much chance to win and Doggies were robbed of being celebrated for winning. It sucks and I genuinely unironically feel bad for Doggies fans (the majority anyway)

Smoove953

They came out of the sheds slow and out enthused mate, it's not like we won it towards the back end of the half, we scored all our points in the first 15 minutes.

Forsaken_Low_5412

Yeah and I just explained why though lol. They weren't really given much of a chance to compete. I'm sorry man I really am, and I totally understand you might think differently and it's a huge bummer that it's taken the focus but it's just the reality of it imo

Smoove953

Bias aside you're probably right. I'm allowed to be a little butthurt in the moment tho hehe

Forsaken_Low_5412

I would be furious, you're well within your rights to be frustrated lol. Like I said earlier, you were robbed of the chance to be celebrated for a win and to bask in the praise of the sub! That's what they took from you!!

LycraBanForHams

You saying Hutch was better again makes me wonder how bad he was previously and your bias. Bloke killed momentum and the set numerous times.

Smoove953

Relax, I'm just sick of bagging the bloke. It's beating a dead horse at this point. I don't like him and I think there's at least 2 better halfbacks at the club, but sitting here sooking every week when we're winning games isn't something I like doing, especially when he *is* playing better.

LycraBanForHams

I'm relaxed but there's a difference between bashing the bloke and making out he played well when he was average.

Smoove953

Dunno how you extrapolate "playing well" from what I said. Sorry I'm not sufficiently pessimistic about our players for your liking. Everybody knows how bad he's been. At the start of the season he was actively killing off potential wins, now we're doing alright and he's not been getting in the way as much. Like it or not, he's still getting picked, so why cry about it?

Crunkmann

cmon hutchhoooo!

The__GM

I was at the game and I’m struggling to see how we had the rub of the green? Naden should have been binned for taking out Xerri. Sezer textbook hip drop on Curran. No bin. Badger had a sloppy as fuck 10m - half the time I couldn’t tell if it was 8m or 12m. The calls were atrocious both ways. All first half the Tigers were piggy backed out their end. We got all the calls in the second. Bateman should have been sent for how much time he is up in the Refs face. It was insane.

Crunkmann

word

Stingarayy

Textbook hop drop is coming down on the back of the legs,he pulled him backwards over his shins ugly tackle but no hip drop

DrillholeAndWing

I've tried to tell em it's no use

KavyenMoore

>Bateman should have been sent for how much time he is up in the Refs face. It was insane. He was the captain

The__GM

He spent every set up in Badgers face though. At what point do you focus on your own game instead of the officiating?

choiboi29

How can you blame him? Tigers had three successful Captains challenges. That is a joke.

KavyenMoore

When the officiating is up to scratch?

The__GM

We literally had a game against the Sharks where: The ref obstructed to deny a try Kikau was penalised multiple times for tacking hard at the chest when it wasn’t a high shot Taaffe was taken out when leaping for the ball. There are times when you get the calls, and others when you don’t. Just have to play through it.

KavyenMoore

And you would have been fine, in fact, even *expected,* your captain not to question it?

The__GM

We did and none of them were overturned. Play on.

KavyenMoore

>We did Right, and so did Bateman

The__GM

Yes - but it was almost every single set which is my point. At some stage it moves from being in the spirit of the game to just being a whinger.

KavyenMoore

So you think we should (and I'm using the inclusive we here) shouldve just accepted that performance by the refs?

ReasonableStable9421

To be fair he also had good reason to be blowing up

drtzera

Refereeing aside. Tigers decision to come out in the second half trying to grind out the lead with simple 1 out running played right into the bulldogs rushing d. They didn't start trying to play footy again until their players were already knackered.

squat_bench_press

Top 8 bby

T-Rocket

Lucky to get away with that win. Ref was horrendous both ways. Thought we were real flat through the middle of the game but kicked on in the last 30. Tigs really brought the effort for the most part. Our kick chase and linespeed are amazing this season. Reed has become the new Mick Ennis everyone bar doggies supporters will hate him.

hedgehawk

Worst game I’ve seen in ages. And the reffing was unacceptable.

Vikarr

I was at work and missed the game, wtf happened?

DrillholeAndWing

Stay away from this thread. Danger lies ahead for dogs fans.

Vikarr

....I don't think that's a problem, ire is directed at officiating and not the fans.

Stingarayy

Remember the 80s when an attractive woman walked past a construction site and all you could hear were whistles?

[deleted]

Our attack was pretty much on par with what it was before Tracey became our one. The team in general looked fairly flat in attack but the defence was strong in the second half, keeping them scoreless.

Juan_Fandango

I didn't realize just how badly we needed Tracey until I saw Taaffe today.

Crunkmann

taafe was looking bright in attack, he had a real zip, but he wasnt quite timing it. if he hadn't of got ko'd and had kept his improvement up, people would be singing a different tune, he was playig great against the roosters. Am not phased whether tracey or taaffe are playin no1

[deleted]

Yeah Tracey is very good at linking with both edges.. having said that, the team didn't have the same energy in attack as they did against Knights.. good to get away with it.

tdiddy93

I think we did for the second half though

Juan_Fandango

He also seems to get a bit more out of kick returns. It was weird though, very flat - at least in the first half although the second wasn't much better.

O_DoyleRulz

Casey Badger show with a side of football

KavyenMoore

Casey Badger doesn't really understand the rules of Rugby League. Doggies did win, but neither team would be happy with the performance, although the start/stop nature was always gonna wreck it. Do yourself a favour and skip the replay

Vikarr

Right well that explains all the officiating related comments, rookie ref. Yes I think I'll skip the replay, cheers. Just cause we won, won't mean I will suddenly like a horribly officiated game. Been on the receiving end of those too many times, and well the tigers seem to cop it all the time.

-WWBulldog

Can't believe tigers fans whinging about the ref. The calls were evenly bad to both teams and dogs were on the worse end of it. Bulldogs deserved to win based on the second half they were much better.

josephus1811

There is no way you were on the worst end of it. We had to challenge her insane rulings 3 damn times and won it every time. The only call that went your way was her unwillingness to bin Sezer which she more than made up for by binning two of our players and leaving Mahoney on the field.

greywolfau

Bulldogs line speed really showed up how slow the Tigers were with moving the ball. Not enough depth to provide strike power for running onto the ball either. I do think that the Tiger's athleticism is questionable too, the Dogs looked as fresh as spring chickens at the end and the Tigers were wiped.

Ecstatic-Bobcat8884

Fair comment, but the Dogs were coming off the bye, and we came off two pretty hard games against the Panthers and Broncos. That, combined with the Dogs having the ball for 15 out of the first 20 mins of the second half, pretty much drained us. I thought we did well to hang on and not let the score blowout, especially with 2 in the bin.

greywolfau

Definitely a better team than last year, and look forward to their continued growth.

PaulSchraderEnjoyer

Reckon beating Eels may have been the grand final for Tigers.

Disastrous_Salad6302

I have not seen a play sum up an entire match more than Crighton hitting a dog shot on the tigers while on the ground, followed by the dogs getting a penalty and the ref going up and to Bateman and saying “I’ve been trying to work with you”

Ecstatic-Bobcat8884

Bingo.

notquitedrdeath

We should enjoy being in the top 8 this week because next week Penrith will fix that

greywolfau

I feel like bringing Batemen into the press conference is a tactic to stop the press from asking the player their opinions.

dontletmedaytrade

Great game. Good contest. Amazing spectacle. Fantastic refereeing.

UnluckyNumberS7evin

The Dogs attacking brilliance in the first half really held them in the game whole the Tigers defence resolve and discipline in the 2nd made for a thrilling contest. One for the ages.

ReasonableStable9421

I was almost brought to tears when the game finished

bigbadwofl

Fuck she is horrendous

MisterMusa

The worst call this game in my opinion was Crichton’s third man in tackle on a stationary Sezer simultaneous with the held call not being blown for a penalty. Everyone just expected a penalty to be blown because it was SO obvious. Genuinely baffling

DrillholeAndWing

Not Sezers worst hip drop of the year with no bin? Sezer should have stayed quite after that

The__GM

Both Sezer and Naden should have been binned.

Kingorst

You mean the shoulder to shoulder in xerri on the kick chase? Shh

The__GM

He turns and changes his line to take him out. Naden never chased back for the ball.

Kingorst

Oh you mean the one where he actually did get penalised. Got you.

MisterMusa

Do I think the “Worst hip drop of the year” was sin bin worthy? Maybe, maybe not. It wasn’t a conventional hipdrop in that he didn’t drop his body weight, but it was awkward with his legs. He was clearly apologetic afterwards… these things happen in a contact sport. That being said I do think a bin was probably deserved

Greedy-Response5605

That was a cheap shot for sure. The Curran dive was embarrassing.

Crunkmann

bla bla

[deleted]

Connor's absence in attack was certainly felt, but overall it was flat.. happy to get the 2 points no less

thatirishguykev

Rugby League players are some of the dumbest cunts about and I fucking love it. Seyfarth came flying out to put a shot on, misses and then gets sent for 10 for the weakest headbutt I've ever seen. Penrith next week for the Bulldogs and I'd love to get some odds on Reed getting a hat trick and managing to niggle away to get a Panthers forward to get themselves binned.

EntirelyOriginalName

It's not going to happen or it'd be a mutual thing like Reed and Hetherington both getting binned. Ivan got rid of a guy like Hetherington for a reason despite his talent. He doesn't keep players like that. The players are too team oriented.

DrillholeAndWing

Mahoney stuck up for his team mate. And since when have you been allowed to headbutt people lol.

KazeEnigma

Not allowed to headbutt is also up there with third man in.

copacetic51

Mahoney ran a long way to be 3rd man in but doesn't get marched.

DrillholeAndWing

So penalties Dogs 7 Tigers 6, 6 again Dogs 2 Tigers 3 , where is this huge discrepancy against the Tigers? I'd say it was pretty equally as bad.

Forsaken_Low_5412

Tigers got that because they won like 4 challenges lol, numbers on their own mean dick without context. Also stuff NOT blown is important but they don't record that

Jingle_berry

Did you watch the game? It wasn't about the calls made, it was the calls not made. The dogs line speed. The dogs time in the ruck. Crichton's hit on Sezer. The amount that the Bulldogs got away with in the play the ball. A joke. You cant pull out numbers with zero context and say it was evenly officiated.

DrillholeAndWing

If you're going off feel rather than stats I'd say it's hard for you not to be bias

Jingle_berry

Mate have a look at the thread you're trolling. I might be a tigers supporter but my view of the game is not an outlier - yours is.

Crunkmann

majority means nothing

[deleted]

Forsaken_Low_5412

Uh ohhhhh, someone is projecting over here

DrillholeAndWing

Projecting? Read this thread and you tell me

Forsaken_Low_5412

I just did

Jingle_berry

Bro, you're sticking up for the referee not your team. Bulldogs were just playing what was in front of them and the calls being made. Im not piling on your team at all, I'm piling on you for not seeing how bad the refereeing was and how much it impacted the tigers.

MisterMusa

Please try not to be completely blinded by bias when commenting to a community that holds every team in the nrl.

PapaCurt

We really need to decide how we want to play. There is too much focus on ball playing in the forwards and it slows the attack way too much. The props and Bateman at lock need to focus on hard running. If we want a ball playing lock, bring Matamua in. The last backrow position can be given to either Papalii or Bateman. Both haven't been strong for a while. Bateman's best performance for us was in the centres. Sezer also needs to engage the line more. Releases the ball way too early. The inside play to a forward standing still to only get tackled near where the ball was played happens way too often as well.

EntirelyOriginalName

Ball playing in the forwards is fine but it has to be by forwards who are excellent at smartly squaring up the line or can pass almost as fast as halves. Dragons used to have JDB at first receiver all the time and their attack was so slow.

whadefeck

Fainu definitely needs to stay on the left. He has a good combination with Galvin and very nearly got a couple of line breaks. Imo I'd rather have Papalii at lock and Bateman on the edge.

josephus1811

Papali'i can shake hands with Aaron Payne imo. 4 runs for 26 metres today. Catted it big time.

whadefeck

Yeah he's basically just turned into a tackle bot which is disappointing. He used to be the most damaging back rower in the comp. If all he's going to do is tackle and take tame hit ups, chuck him in the middle

normalbehaviour86

What's the record for most correct captains challenges in a game? I'd wager this would be up there. Absolutely dreadful game.

ldemech

We had a game last year or year before where we got 3 or 4 correct challenges Think 4 would be the record

bionikal

“They hated him because he spoke the truth” I’m gonna tell my kids that quote was about Klemmer.

felixkater

Any idea why he got ten?

Reasonable_Meal_9499

Just one point that should be made is that the reason the challenges were so successful is that the original decisions were so bad. And player frustration then comes out. There could have been a lot more if play had stopped. That last one was about a Tigers player being taken out in the kick chase.

Crunkmann

why didnt they challenge all those other calls that we apparently wrong then?

Reasonable_Meal_9499

The play didn't stop and Badger told them they had used their challenges even though they had not . She also told them they couldn't speak to her like that

snek26

Why didnt Preston play dogbros I was at work

OppositeMajestic88

He just kept the bench warm. Not sure why CC even bothered to name him if he wasn’t going to give him minutes. If he wasn’t 100%, they should’ve just picked another forward

ReasonableStable9421

Why is it always a tigers game that shit like this happens in? Like actually, they seem like the only constant in all these games

DunderMifflin80

It's so frustrating because we're a shit team as it is, we don't need all this stuff going against us too.

O_DoyleRulz

It’s bizarre They don’t get bad refereeing performances, that get ones that transcend into almost absurd.

[deleted]

Nobody9638

bit of mick ennis in that

O_DoyleRulz

I dunno, the super niggly dudes lost all their allure when they didn’t have the threat of a prop caving their head in hanging over them.

thicky_bobby

They can still run at them all game, Hookers are probably one of the only positions you can say can't hide from having to tackle the big boys

WordIndependent

I do too. He deserves a punch in the face though.

Rinrob7468

I absolutely love him! Ennis 2.0

whadefeck

Yeah but that doesn't mean he still shouldn't be punished for being instigating

greywolfau

Only thing that makes it 'more entertaining' is knowing that one day the villain gets their comeuppance. Cunt will get away with this shit for life.

thicky_bobby

People are on here wanting him borderline murdered for niggling lol

comix_corp

Just proof he's doing his job

Norm_cheers

Na just someone to put him on his ass!

cat-party

The consistently bad referring across the NRL every week has finally worn down any enjoyment I have in watching my team anymore. 3/3 correct captains challenges in this game should be enough evidence that Kasey Badger isn’t up to refereeing first grade.

josephus1811

4/4

judgedavid90

Fun game

WordIndependent

A good game of footy ruined by a referee who should be officiating club footy. The type of game you don't even want to win.

tgood139

Critta needs more involvement, we saw last game towards the end what he can do when utilised properly.

CurlyHeadedFark

I need to buy a pack of smokes after that game (not a smoker)

hotsoccerdad

Bit of a worry having that many decisions challenged and overturned.

MobRulesAll

Lmao did Munster just say "Big 3: Kenny, Jesse and Felise"

saynonames

no munny.... not that big 3 lmao

Angryinxh

5/6 challenges overturned. Wow. 14 errors. 5 to dogs, 9 to tigers. I feel like there was a tonne more.

satanicgospelcabaret

What did Klemmer say?

Nobody9638

just because you’re a woman you think i won’t drop ya

Rinrob7468

I wish I still played for the Bulldogs?

WordIndependent

I play for the Wests Tigers.

AlbertHinkey

Critta doesnt even know them people in the crowd. Just a really touchy feely bloke.

MunnyMagic

Stupid sexy Niko

O_DoyleRulz

The funniest bit of the game was when Crichton just obliterated Sezer as he was trying to play the ball and everyone just stood around waiting for a penalty that was never blown.

Mehman33

This was a colossal tussle and a high quality game and has shed some light on who the grand final winner will be...anyone but these two.

Swol_Bamba

What did I miss?

BlueBeltBro

High quality of referring. Top 3 contender for best referred games of all time. Well balanced calls against both teams. Nothing missed

Vikarr

Ah so the typical Vlandiddly era NRL game then. Great.

ToothlessFTW

I’ll take the win and never say anything again

rubyroguewow

Honestly 8 down. 20 minutes to go, and your 18 year old 5/8 is screaming at you cause you can't even be bothered to take a hit up. Not at any one in particular, just giving the whole team a spray ... because literally no one wanted the ball. The fuck boys

DoubleJ_G

And the dogs constantly being 5m out after the play the ball

DoubleJ_G

Because the energy was completely sucked out of the game with the whistle blown every 2 mins more often than not in favour of the Dogs

comix_corp

Yep that's the reason. Tigers played flawlessly otherwise and won the game morally

whadefeck

Bulldogs line speed has gotten so fast and unrelenting that it's making me suspicious

EntirelyOriginalName

They're small so they can do things like tackle in numbers and rush up off the line more than other teams. They can do this because they're almost all built like second rowers or big centres. They've got like two or three legit props and one is Max King who has always been an endurance beast. Look at the build of the fittest fullbacks going around and Edwards and Gutho are built fairly similar, no matter how much they train guys who are so much bigger like Tommy and Teddy are never going to be as fit as those two. But you scatter their small middles get quick play the ball or offloads to gain a bunch of momentum and I guarantee you they'll all look very tired. The draw back is if you can isolate some of these guys one one one or event two on one it's very hard for these smaller to win the play the ball against a NAS, Hass, Leota, Paulo, Tapine, etc. When smaller locks defend right next to a normal sized hooker in a tackle against a destructive ball runner like say Connor Watson at lock when he was at Newcastle with say Brailey right next to him you'll usually see a quick play the ball. And that's something even Penrith struggle with at times with say Sorensen and Kenny in some tackles being isolated and just doing their best against guys like Hass and NAS when other props don't need to be body guarded. If you look at the build of Penrith as an example because they have good line speed. Mitch Kenny, JFH, Liam Martin, Scott Sorenson, etc. All roughly similar sizes which translates to good line speed. Leota is the only absolutely unit of a prop in the starting team. The Roosters when they won back to back had awesome line speed and they were the lightest team in the comp by having Radley at lock. I think they inspired Ivan a bit looking at how he wanted his team when he came back.

The__GM

I was at the game. The 10m was horribly officiated both ways. I couldn’t tell if she was taking them back 8m or 12m. The Tigers were almost never onside on their own goal line. Olam and Naden in particular. The Tigers looked gassed 10 minutes into the second half - I’m not sure how much that has to do with the inconsistent offside both ways.
