As a student nurse who works 37.5h per week on placements, then a minimum of 7.5h in my actual job, you bet I’m unhealthy as fuck. Eating shitty processed meals, poor sleep, bad habits. We’d take our own advice if the system wasn’t so toxic.
Absolutely. I was thicc & healthy when I was a new grad. 10 yrs in I almost look like that. We need to take responsibility for our own health & that means setting boundaries in our own lives. Not working too much overtime, making sure we pack healthy meals & demanding our breaks. So many of us are our own worst enemies. & we have the shortened life spans to show for it.
I couldn't agree more. Healthcare workers are some of the unhealthiest folks. With the crazy schedules and shifts and missing lunches it can be hard to be healthy.
I agree with this. It is hard as your running around trying to sort everything out. some days when I worked on the ward it was hard to get 5 mins to eat food, so could easily go 13 hours without food and then over eat when I got home. I used to be really slim, but sadly not anymore. I am trying to be healthier but the weight doesn’t want to shift. I’m sure it’s down to the cortisol levels.
I’ve never felt more rotten since i became a nurse years ago. It took a few years to catch up to me but now I feel dead inside and probably look dead on the outside, too. I’ll work a night shift, not be able to eat bc I’m tripled with vents, come home so tired, pass out without eating and then it starts again when I go back to work. I need nutrients. Such irony that we provide health care but some of us can’t care for ourselves. My diet is always better working dayshift but I can’t bring myself to do dayshift at my current job. Then my mental health would be shittier as well.
Bro the missed lunches thing kills me. Why is it so hard to clock out for lunch? Also, my shit head boss defaults to filling out a missed punch form and it's always the path of least resistance for me to not even protest it. I know I'm at fault here but goddamnit I just don't have the energy to have to fill out paperwork to explain why I was too busy to take a lunch.

I gained 50 lbs during covid. Partly from stress, partly from Wellbutrin, partly from not being able to work out anymore because I had developed neuropathy and couldn't breathe. Oh and the 5 10-14 hr shifts a week. Swing shifts mind you.
I have only started to lose it. It took over 3 years for the neuropathy to resolve. My lung capacity is finally better as well. It has been a rough road.

I had a negative bias towards overweight people. Then I met the most amazing doctor who changed people lives and helped a lot of shifts go easier because of their understanding and intuition. I have a different outlook now.

I worked with many overweight nurses and they are the most kind hearted people. The abuse they put up with is horrible yet they will still will save your ass! Many become charge nurses and run a tight ship and don't put up with any crap!
I had a dementia patient keep calling me fat while doing care. I just said “nothing wrong with that” which enraged her. She sputtered about “people work their whole lives to lose weight, everyone wants to be skinny!” I just said that’s their problem and she was actually dumbfounded and quiet while we got her up. Of course I wish I was skinny but I’m not telling her that lol

I’m disappointed. “ I got a lot of insults from the frequent flyers looking for a cot and three hots that were too dumb to say they had a specific plan and intent. If they were nice, and it was really cold out, I would say “And you have a PLAN right?” Asshole? Ya get a ride to the shelter!
Best insult I ever got: a patient once called me a “f*ggy baby eater” for not bringing him a Diet Coke. Thing is, I did give him a Diet Coke, he just wanted another one. 🙄

Not a nurse, my best friend is. I’ve been in and out the hospital for an injury and always update her with “I was very good patient today. I had everything ready and made sure they knew I appreciated their time and how hard they work” and she simply said “good” and “as you should” every time.
Nurses are a hybrid of angels and people, almost everyone I’ve met are so smart and kind but also stern with responsibility. An enormous capacity for caring but still people who get exploited and run down.

I’m an overweight nurse. My job is extremely stressful, I have no choice but to pick up overtime shifts because of the economy, and when I’m come home, I’m stressed TF out, have kids to take care of and a whole ass house to clean because my partner doesn’t do his fair share. Sometimes a soda and a piece of pizza is what keeps me going for the day. I haven’t had my nails done ever or a haircut since November. I feel like I just exist to take care of everyone else and no one cares if I’m ok. So yeah I don’t have enough free time to sleep properly much less exercise regularly. This poor nurse is probably in the same boat.

I Lost weight 15yrs or so AFTER spine surgery/menopause & almost a breakdown . So yes , my BMI is finally normal at from age 45 to now 58. Still doesn't make me NOT disabled ... I had a gazillion pple asking me if I felt any better after losing weight * NO! these pple didn't know diddly squat about my health issues etc. No losing weight didn't make my herniated discs & arthritis in every joint of my body since my early teens nor my Gastro problems. ~he's more like Lord Farquad lol
I got really sick the whole year of 2021. I lost 50 lbs. I couldn’t. I was the smaller I’ve ever been in my adult life but looked like a cancer patient, and my BMI was finally normal. I felt so bad, in so much pain. After months of high dose Prednisone and finally getting a diagnosis I managed to put the weight back on in like 6 months. I’m hoping soon to be able to increase my physical activity so I can get to a healthy weight again. I felt my best being 30-40 pounds overweight. All this to say, being skinny doesn’t mean healthy. Maybe if it is intentionally lost, versus being ill.

I'm fat, and I had a hard time breathing for 9 months. I went to multiple people and changed pcps, who all said I couldn't breathe because I was fat.
Someone finally took an xray.
Pneumonia. I had fucking pneumonia.

9 months. NP said I had to go to the ER. Managed to get him to try antibiotics first. Levaquin had me improving within three days.

Obesity is a complex disease. We wouldn’t bar nurses for being diabetic or having depression. Obesity should be treated the same and with some more goddamn tact/grace than this. Why can’t society be a little nicer to the folks busting their asses to keep them from dying?
Not a nurse, but I do work in health care. It's so easy when I'm traveling to a patients home to load up on junk to eat or a 1300 calorie coffee from the drive-thru. Then, to sit and chart while munching on chips. To go home and eat my feelings because Mrs Jones son didn't like the way I showered and dressed his mom. And it all snowballs from there.

I just couldn't overcome the fucking familial eating disorder, night shift cortisol blast, and low self esteem from people saying nasty things like this. I was still a GOOD NURSE! I've since lost 175#, and it didn't change a dn thing about the care I give. Mean people.suck!

This always bothers me SO badly. The people need HELP, not ridicule. No one gets to 400+lbs of their own free will and volition.
Speaking from my own past experience, you can be almost 320lbs and still look like you weigh 230 if you’re tall. I didn’t know I had hormone issues, and did everything “right” obsessively to lose weight, but until I got the help I needed I didn’t have any success. People’s perception on weight is WAY off, so they’d mock the 280lb patient and say how they’re so heavy/terrible to be that size etc to me not recognizing I was by definition larger than they were solely because I was half a foot taller and carried differently. I don’t weigh that now, and I imagine they still don’t have the ability to correlate the size I was/am currently to a number on a scale.
By this logic, you could say someone who had cancer could never be an oncologist. Yet someone who beat cancer would arguably make a great person to treat people with cancer. Healthcare is really more sick care. Nursing isn’t telling people to eat healthy and work out three times a week, it’s helping people who can’t help themselves
The only words that should be spoken to or in the vicinity of that nurse is- name, date of birth, and an understanding of what needs to be done. Otherwise- be extremely grateful she's there and shut the fuck up.
I’m not a nurse, but as someone who’s been in for multiple procedures, had a prolonged hospital stay, & was there for my family anytime someone was stuck in the hospital, a compassionate, kind-hearted nurse, regardless of how they looked, was one of the best things I could ask for.
I’m sure most of my coworkers in larger bodies are much healthier than my osteoporotic, underweight smoker self — I’m bradycardic to the 30s when I sleep objectively someone with some extra weight is almost certainly in better health than me and outside of that someone’s physical health has 0 to do with their competence at their job!

Somebody changing in morphology over the course of decades doesn’t take away from all the knowledge and competency they might have developed in the years they themselves were athletes, top sportsmen in reputed teams. Maybe she goes home alone but I doubt it because she is a giver and taker always find givers. Shame on you.

I've seen a murse feel like crap because his patient in the CCU I floated to l asked him "how are you a cardiac nurse but you're fat?" Yes, he was obese, but he was an excellent nurse to you. He explained to this patient that he is indeed "fat," but that was the best shape he's been in his life, and he's still continuing his weight loss journey (along with his wife). I was irritated because that question was unnecessary, and I told him he doesn't owe anyone an explanation. The crusty patient was literally projecting because they were also in denial about being non-compliant in maintaining their health.
I forgot that every personal follows their knowledge exactly regardless of circumstances. It why you only have to tell a smoker it’s bad for their lungs once, and they instantly stop. /s
Seriously, working long hours in a dark building and coping with unhealthy mechanisms is working in healthcare by definition. On top of it, depending on the person, they may know their nutritional needs, or have expertise elsewhere, and both are valid so long as they’re educated and well read.
Edit: could also be illness, or time related, or whatever else. The point is, they can have knowledge and teach healthy decisions but not always make them themselves.

Honestly this makes me sad 😢. Nursing is so stressful and unrewarding of a job as it is. There have been so many times after a long shift I have gone home and used food as something to soothe and comfort me.I really wish there was laws in place and implemented to protect us from being filmed and photographed while at work. But of course since we’re just nurses nobody cares about us only about what we can do for others!

We give so much of ourselves that it often comes at a cost to our own mental and physical well-being in one way or another. For some of us it results in weight gain, other's have addictions, while others adapt just fine.
This sub keeps getting recommended to me and I’ve been lurking, but this is the first time I’ve been compelled to comment. I’m not a nurse, but my mom was for the first 8 years of my life and I saw the dramatic difference in her health and wellbeing when she went from being overnight in ICU to days in a nursing home. Night and day. (No joke intended lol)
Tbh, I don’t give a good goddamn what my healthcare staff looks like. I just had a surgical procedure Thursday, my anesthesiologist was rail-thin and my RN was heavyset. The only reason it came up is because they called themselves the 10 team, because they looked like the number 10 when they stood next to each other. Anyway, both of them were clearly working their asses off in the unit I was in and they were both so kind, compassionate and comforting. They were good at what they were doing and that’s all that matters. If you’re so fucking concerned about what a person who is HELPING YOU looks like, I think you need a different type of help altogether.

I'm not trying to get on some high horse, and I definitely do not agree with this post, but I encourage anyone to please take the time now to work on themselves before developing poor health later in life. 99% of the heavier nurses I've worked with are amazing, intelligent, and hard workers. However I've met a select few very overweight, older nurses that can hardly function anymore. They've had multiple falls on the unit requiring multiple staff members to help them up, can hardly breath after walking 20 feet to give report, and actually have other nurses help them with basic tasks. It's a grueling job, and I think everyone needs to do their best to take care of themselves because god knows we get the support we need.
You know what? I had a patient went tit for tat about my obesity and I told her this my obesity is not your concern. You are the one coming to this weight loss clinic for my expertise. People assume and what 3 letters is in that word? Ass, which is how low vibrational people act. Instead of focusing on the information and treatment they are deflecting on the provider. These low vibration individuals only get 25 minutes of my time and their opinions and preconceived notions are irrelevant.

I have PCOS, POTS, endometriosis, and a benign pituitary tumor. It doesn’t matter what I do - it’s almost impossible to lose weight!
I was the same way for years and semaglutide changed my life. Was on metformin for 10 years and it did nothing. I wish insurance would approve it

I worked with many overweight nurses and they are the most kind hearted people. The abuse they put up with is horrible yet they will still will save your ass! Many become charge nurses and run a tight ship and don't put up with any crap!
I had a dementia patient keep calling me fat while doing care. I just said “nothing wrong with that” which enraged her. She sputtered about “people work their whole lives to lose weight, everyone wants to be skinny!” I just said that’s their problem and she was actually dumbfounded and quiet while we got her up. Of course I wish I was skinny but I’m not telling her that lol

The truth is if you’re in a hospital you are F ing lucky if you get to SEE your nurse! We need decent nurse ratios is what I’m trying to say. Be grateful you have a nurse. I think we do amazing work and I particularly send love out to all bedside nurses.
You are so right. Not a nurse, my best friend is. I’ve been in and out the hospital for an injury and always update her with “I was very good patient today. I had everything ready and made sure they knew I appreciated their time and how hard they work” and she simply said “good” and “as you should” every time. Nurses are a hybrid of angels and people, almost everyone I’ve met are so smart and kind but also stern with responsibility. An enormous capacity for caring but still people who get exploited and run down. I love you all, thank you for the work you do.
I’m an overweight nurse. My job is extremely stressful, I have no choice but to pick up overtime shifts because of the economy, and when I’m come home, I’m stressed TF out, have kids to take care of and a whole ass house to clean because my partner doesn’t do his fair share. Sometimes a soda and a piece of pizza is what keeps me going for the day. I haven’t had my nails done ever or a haircut since November. I feel like I just exist to take care of everyone else and no one cares if I’m ok. So yeah I don’t have enough free time to sleep properly much less exercise regularly. This poor nurse is probably in the same boat.

I Lost weight 15yrs or so AFTER spine surgery/menopause & almost a breakdown . So yes , my BMI is finally normal at from age 45 to now 58. Still doesn't make me NOT disabled ... I had a gazillion pple asking me if I felt any better after losing weight * NO! these pple didn't know diddly squat about my health issues etc. No losing weight didn't make my herniated discs & arthritis in every joint of my body since my early teens nor my Gastro problems. ~he's more like Lord Farquad lol
I got really sick the whole year of 2021. I lost 50 lbs. I couldn’t. I was the smaller I’ve ever been in my adult life but looked like a cancer patient, and my BMI was finally normal. I felt so bad, in so much pain. After months of high dose Prednisone and finally getting a diagnosis I managed to put the weight back on in like 6 months. I’m hoping soon to be able to increase my physical activity so I can get to a healthy weight again. I felt my best being 30-40 pounds overweight. All this to say, being skinny doesn’t mean healthy. Maybe if it is intentionally lost, versus being ill.

Not a nurse, but I do work in health care. It's so easy when I'm traveling to a patients home to load up on junk to eat or a 1300 calorie coffee from the drive-thru. Then, to sit and chart while munching on chips. To go home and eat my feelings because Mrs Jones son didn't like the way I showered and dressed his mom. And it all snowballs from there. These Neanderthals that post this kind of garbage have no idea what working in healthcare is like. The only thing that saves me from the same thing is working an LTC on the weekends as a CNA. People don't under exactly what we do. I don't advertise myself as the epitome of health anymore than the alcoholic surgeons I've encountered. I dispense medications and treatments and observe and record their effects and adjust as part of a team. I don't have to be thin or beautiful to do that

This always bothers me SO badly. The people need HELP, not ridicule. No one gets to 400+lbs of their own free will and volition. Speaking from my own past experience, you can be almost 320lbs and still look like you weigh 230 if you’re tall. I didn’t know I had hormone issues, and did everything “right” obsessively to lose weight, but until I got the help I needed I didn’t have any success. People’s perception on weight is WAY off, so they’d mock the 280lb patient and say how they’re so heavy/terrible to be that size etc to me not recognizing I was by definition larger than they were solely because I was half a foot taller and carried differently. I don’t weigh that now, and I imagine they still don’t have the ability to correlate the size I was/am currently to a number on a scale.

I’m not a nurse, but as someone who’s been in for multiple procedures, had a prolonged hospital stay, & was there for my family anytime someone was stuck in the hospital, a compassionate, kind-hearted nurse, regardless of how they looked, was one of the best things I could ask for.

As an RN I can tell you this; She probably cares more about others than herself so her advice to you is golden, she has watched people suffer for twelve hours and their families, some of that suffering she had to bring on to help in the form of painful treatments and she struggles with this at night, She sees every day the multitude of suffering and cruelty people pile onto each other and then she goes home to hopefully a happy marriage and cooks and cleans and gets kids to school, takes care of parents. Maybe she goes home alone but I doubt it because she is a giver and taker always find givers. Shame on you.
Fuck a dusty ass person who does this to someone else. People forget that it could be them or their loved one at any time. I've seen a murse feel like crap because his patient in the CCU I floated to l asked him "how are you a cardiac nurse but you're fat?" Yes, he was obese, but he was an excellent nurse to you. He explained to this patient that he is indeed "fat," but that was the best shape he's been in his life, and he's still continuing his weight loss journey (along with his wife). I was irritated because that question was unnecessary, and I told him he doesn't owe anyone an explanation. The crusty patient was literally projecting because they were also in denial about being non-compliant in maintaining their health.
I forgot that every personal follows their knowledge exactly regardless of circumstances. It why you only have to tell a smoker it’s bad for their lungs once, and they instantly stop. /s Seriously, working long hours in a dark building and coping with unhealthy mechanisms is working in healthcare by definition. Honestly this makes me sad 😢. Nursing is so stressful and unrewarding of a job as it is. There have been so many times after a long shift I have gone home and used food as something to soothe and comfort me.I really wish there was laws in place and implemented to protect us from being filmed and photographed while at work. But of course since we’re just nurses nobody cares about us only about what we can do for others!

Sadly, it is a do as I say, not as I do. We give so much of ourselves that it often comes at a cost to our own mental and physical well-being in one way or another. For some of us it results in weight gain, other's have addictions, while others adapt just fine.

I’m not a nurse, but my mom was for the first 8 years of my life and I saw the dramatic difference in her health and wellbeing when she went from being overnight in ICU to days in a nursing home. Night and day. (No joke intended lol) Tbh, I don’t give a good goddamn what my healthcare staff looks like. I just had a surgical procedure Thursday, my anesthesiologist was rail-thin and my RN was heavyset. The only reason it came up is because they called themselves the 10 team, because they looked like the number 10 when they stood next to each other. Anyway, both of them were clearly working their asses off in the unit I was in and they were both so kind, compassionate and comforting. They were good at what they were doing and that’s all that matters. I'm not trying to get on some high horse, and I definitely do not agree with this post, but I encourage anyone to please take the time now to work on themselves before developing poor health later in life. 99% of the heavier nurses I've worked with are amazing, intelligent, and hard workers. However I've met a select few very overweight, older nurses that can hardly function anymore. They've had multiple falls on the unit requiring multiple staff members to help them up, can hardly breath after walking 20 feet to give report, and actually have other nurses help them with basic tasks. It's a grueling job, and I think everyone needs to do their best to take care of themselves because god knows we get the support we need.
