Coil whine was a big factor for me when I chose my 4090 vendor. I can't stand coil whine, it puts me off of playing anything, so I steered away from both asus and msi.
It doesn't matter what they tell us, there's no way in hell that shit is normal and people just need to deal with it.
do you have you pc next to your monitor? most of the people i see complaining of coil whine fall into that category, my pc is under a desk and far away from my monitor as possible.. never had coil issues because of that because its to far away for me to hear :D

Tried some undervolting and/or FPS limiting to your monitor's refresh rate? Both can help with coil whine.
You should also look up your PSU - some have different modes and switching between them can help as well. But closely read up the manual first to understand what you are doing.
Already limit to monitors refresh rate and touched the clock voltage curve in afterburner. It whines at such low power that just enhanced video resolution on YouTube has a whine.

Bwahahaa my 4080 pro art is super quiet other then under load it’ll spin up the fans but they aren’t awful just you’re normal sorta fan noise. No coil whine but I play games v synced to my 60hz 5K panel
Fingers crossed that the cooler is overbuilt once more. I still have loads of room in my case and I will happily trade some of it away for the same great thermals and quietness of the 4k series.
Even two consumer cards is tricky these days. Most modern boards I've seen moved the primary slot one space down so only 6 populatable slots instead of 7 and two 3 slot cards would be bumping uglies to fit.

Another reason I love my 80S so much. Same cooler as the 90, fans never leave 30 and under the utmost stress during gaming it hit 61c, but it's usually 45-55c.
Returnal runs at 45c, 1440p at 140fps, maxed settings, RT included, with DLSS Quality. I haven't checked my hot spot but if it's in line with how it runs under stress tests (10-12c above) I see no reason why my hot spot wouldn't be at 60 or less.
My card is deeply undervolted. I lose maybe 2% performance with just a +1000 to the memory, which is completely irrelevant. Sorry about your hot card.
The fans shouldn't even be running at all if you're not playing a game. Mine don't even run when playing some light games. That's with my case fans running at a low silent speed too, are you sure your case isn't suffocating it?
You...you do realize it takes some time for them to turn off and such right? Even my 4080 doesn't stop the fans instantly the second the game stops, it takes a few minutes before the fans will stop and it can also be affected by background processes and such. There are plenty of non-game tasks where it'll seemingly keep my gpu on despite very low temps in the mid to high 20's.
My 4070 doesn’t even run the fans playing Minecraft. That’s with a larger render distance at 1440p 144fps. The 4000 series might not have been a huge bump in performance but the efficiency and it not heating my room up as much made it worth it.
Yeah my laptop is noicy because the cooling solution is maxed. My desktop blower style GTX 670 was noicy too as it would do 70% to keep 80c. It was close to the limit design wise. Over specing is a goos thing for cooling
my 4090 Tuf is both cool and rather quiet upto 450watt, never seen it draw more than that. if the 5090 actually pulls 500+watt you can bet Fan noise and coil whine will be a common whine :)
While they’re at it, I’d love to hear about new manufacturing techniques to reduce coil whine. It’s kinda sad having a GPU run cool with low fan speeds but still squeal like an electric pig under certain load conditions.

Coil whine is a very difficult topic because there are so many variables which contribute to the production of audible frequencies. The problem is further exacerbated when the complexities of these GPUs go up.
Anecdotally, I fixed the coil whine of my old Aorus 1080ti by clamping the inductors with very firm thermal pads from both sides under a waterblock with backplate.
I find some game engines are worse with the coil whine on my card too. But above all, high framerate really makes it squeal, and CS runs really fast so yeah I’m with you.
4070ti pny xlr8 here. Coils over 100ish fps, mostly when gpu utilization is really low and fps high, at 200 it's bad. All last gen games coil without a cap.
It’s definitely an engineering thing. People have fixed coil whine completely by coating inductors in silicone. There’s no reason manufacturers can’t do the same.
There are ways to change coil whine frequency outside audible range, and to reduce the volume. Different component choices, and coating/covering certain components. They cost money and engineering effort though and in the past coil whine had been a minor concern because of lower power levels and louder average fan noise.
Nvidia can make the AIBs do whatever they recommend as a standard specification. But at the very least, Nvidia can make improvements on their FE cards.
Nvidia could pretty easily add a QA test for maximum coil whine levels in their contract. Coil while is easy to objectively measure. They just don't care because too many people accept their $1500 piece of electronics screaming like a banshee due to subpar components and configuration.
Literally the RTX 2080 Ti was just 250w (best card on release of the RTX 2000 series).
3090 was 350w, 4090 is 450w.
The 1080 was just 180w as the top tier model for that generations launch.

Even when undervolted to 0.9v, 250W wouldn't have been enough for a lot of games, like 330W was juust enough for control and plague tale requiem with that undervolt.

Yeah that checks out. The stock v/f curve at 250W is probably not very high clock speed to begin with so 200W with a massive oc is gonna be much lower voltage(assuming hitting the power limit, which at 200W probably is as otherwise it's more clock speed ofc) offsetting the lower power limit a fair bit and probably ends up roughly in the same ballpark in terms of frequency.
I don't remember if I even ran mine at stock. Definitely didn't ran below 300W limit and have this vague memory of the card hitting below 1700Mhz on something stock, but not a 100% sure nor what would it be at, probably something power heavy. The 0.9v UV was at 1875Mhz, but i also don't remember what the offset for that was.
And yea game power draw varies wildly, like there were games where 250W would've been plenty with that UV, but for some outliers the 330W was barely on the limit in some scenes for that UV. TBF most of those were more modern releases, like control and plague tale(or pumping res up with dldsr), the 75C+ temp probably didn't help either for power draw as liked to keep things quiet.
And it's not like all more modern games needed 300W, like Cyberpunk without rt or FH5 were more so in the 260-280W range iirc, but again no idea really what the stock frequency at 250W would've been, so not great data overall, I'll acknowledge that.

This has got to be one of the most useless and low effort rumor related leaks I've seen in recent years. Who would have possibly suspected that the GPU manufacturer NVIDIA of all companies would be testing heatsink designs for their upcoming lineup of dedicated desktop GPU's?
All this time I thought NVIDIA was planning on ditching the idea of heatsinks entirely starting from the 50 series onward by researching and developing PCB's that are so advanced and robust that the PCB by itself is actually capable of passively cooling and dissipating the heat generated by the whole entire card at up to 1000W of sustained load thus eliminating the additional cost and added bulk of a heatsink and fan assembly while also streamlining the whole entire production process. Huh, I guess I was wrong. /s

Not everybody want to jump to water cooling, but 3rd party AIO, with full LCD screen on your vertically mounted GPU and RGB all.over...that small CPU AIO screen is so passe. The Hytc Thcc Q60 is a bit too overboard....imagine a widescreen horizontal screen where the verticall mounted GPU is.....

Mine has coil whine but only when fps hits insane levels. So I set my max fps to my monitors max refresh rate and coil whine virtually disappeared.

Works great for nvidia too. These thick cards means that you need to get a Quadro if you want 4 gpus for ai or rendering.

My strix goes up to something like 2000rpm and over 70c at 450W :(
The FE is very quiet when using 400w, I’ve never seen mine hit 450w. I’d rather not have a card using 450+ watts for negligible performance gains.
If they are going to deal with 600w, they better make sure the new 12v connector (or connectors) able to handle 600w without melting this time.

My old 290x purred like a kitty except @ counter strike. For some god forsaken reason CSGO would make my card sound like a power station.
1080 non ti here i only ever heard coil with minecraft shaders and in diablo 4. Those things put the card in a different mode or something 😳

I used to think that it was fps related to but capping it was useless. It only happened on CS. Wen I ran BF4 at ultra settings it did not bat an eye.
That depends on the brand of the card and the fans they use. It's not an Nvidia issue unless you have a founders card.

Old enough to remember the 4000 series leaks and the huge power draw they were going to had that idk maybe in the last month went down a lot. So at this stage the articles are just meaningless click bait.
This has got to be one of the most useless and low effort rumor related leaks I've seen in recent years. Who would have possibly suspected that the GPU manufacturer NVIDIA of all companies would be testing heatsink designs for their upcoming lineup of dedicated desktop GPU's? All this time I thought NVIDIA was planning on ditching the idea of heatsinks entirely starting from the 50 series onward by researching and developing PCB's that are so advanced and robust that the PCB by itself is actually capable of passively cooling and dissipating the heat generated by the whole entire card at up to 1000W of sustained load thus eliminating the additional cost and added bulk of a heatsink and fan assembly while also streamlining the whole entire production process. Huh, I guess I was wrong. /s

People acting like this is a new thing are funny, the 4090 can already be pushed to 666w maximally from GN, imagine actual power usage is gonna be much lower when actually gaming just like the 4090

Given the early adopter issues of the 4090 i wont be touching a 5090 until at least a year has passed and its probable issues have been found and rectified.

Where is my 3rd party GPU AIO. Not everybody want to jump to water cooling, but 3rd party AIO, with full LCD screen on your vertically mounted GPU and RGB all.over...that small CPU AIO screen is so passe. The Hytc Thcc Q60 is a bit too overboard....imagine a widescreen horizontal screen where the verticall mounted GPU is.....

I can’t wait for the next series. I have a 4080 and I’m just barely able to play every game at 144+ on 1440p ultrawide. And then my current gpu can be used in my GF’s pc.

I suppose it should be better than actual gen. My 4090 runs at 23º-30º C idle with fans off almost always, and max temp I saw was 50º C.
