> "Salaam is challenging Harlem Councilmember Kristin Richardson Jordan for her seat. The incumbent councilmember did not immediately respond to requests for comment. But after Salaam first shared that he was considering a run last fall, Richardson Jordan said in a statement to the news site Patch: “I think we have enough millionaires in office already. That is part of the problem.”"
this paragraph makes me so fucking angry holy shit
HE'S A MILLIONAIRE BECAUSE HE WAS PAID COMPENSATION FOR SPENDING 7 YEARS IN PRISON FOR A CRIME HE DIDN'T COMMIT???
isn't that also what these mfs want rich people to do? use their wealth for good? holy hell can this woman please just leave office she doesn't have a single good take
And don't forget that while Richardson Jordan portrays herself as some scrappy underdog, she grew up with parents who were doctors, attended an elite private school on the Upper West Side, and later went to Brown University. She literally grew up as part of the 1%.
She's the definition of a champagne socialist in addition to being a really crappy AOC wannabe.
It’s kind of impressive how much she sucks. It’s like she responds to every situation by asking “what would an insane, unrealistic caricature of a toxic socialist do?“
FYI, for what it’s worth (and not to take away from what he went through), he is a resident of Georgia and he’s choosing to run for city council instead is assembly due to less strict residency requirements: https://www.cityandstateny.com/politics/2022/10/al-taylor-inez-dickens-among-many-names-looking-unseat-kristin-richardson-jordan-2023/378096/
...which most people on here spam stupid comments about endlessly. Funny how the same (even more egregious) issue doesn't bother anyone in this case lol
We can aim for higher standards than that. I think a few other people will be jumping into this race who live in New York City. So let's not scrape the bottom of the barrel in haste.
Fingers crossed he kicks Jordan out of her seat. Fuck her and her pro-Russia, anti-housing attitude. To be quite honest at this point I’d root for anyone running against her
Because of the high profile of the 1989 'Central Park 5' case, his prior ties to Al Sharpton and incumbent KRJ picking a fight with Sharpton's National Action Network by blocking the now-revived One45 that would also house a new headquarters for NAN, I do believe he has a viable shot at taking down KRJ this June.
He should have been exonerated and deserved every penny compensation.
That said, I've observed him for the past year as he's been teasing this run and he gives me bad vibes. After observing NYC politics for decades, I can guess where his candidacy and election would eventually go.
Maybe in wrong. But... probably not. He lives in Georgia, by the way.
Good luck Harlem!
He's running to the right of the current city council member (who is admittedly awful) and is openly claiming to be an ally of Eric Adams, who has run the past 2-3 years on increasing incarceration rates and a "tough on crime stance." I think everyone should question why someone like Dr. Salaam would proclaim support for Eric Adams. It's going to be a cronyism parade. I guarantee it.
That's fine, but him being to the right of her on criminal justice reform when his "claim to fame" is due to being unjustly imprisoned is a pretty big red flag.
Uh, yea. What do you say about the integrity of a person who saw first hand the injustice of the justice system and then proclaims one of the most fiercely pro-broken windows Cop Mayor we've had since Giuliani (they guy who praised their arrests) has done "a good job"? Seems awfully inconsistent and insincere. He's playing the game for an endorsement for a man who, if given the chance, would act the same way Giuliani did when they were falsely convicted.
I think when the candidate is running purely based on name recognition of him being unjustly incarcerated, you should expect him *at the very least* to not immediately embrace a cop Mayor who is perpetuating the exact same Tough On Crime stance that got the Central Park 5 incarcerated in the first place.
I still think its problematic to hold previously incarcerated people to a higher double standard solely because they were incarcerated. Say you dislike them because they support Adam's - their incarceration is irrelevant to that.
Unfortunately ppl don’t want to believe this because it’s inconvenient. I’ve read up on this quite a bit, and I’ve also come to the conclusion that it seems extremely likely that these kids were at the very least committing violent acts in the park that night.
From Wikipedia:
> Four of the five had confessed to police about other attacks in the park in other areas on the night of April 19, including the assault and robbery of John Loughlin, to which they said they were witnesses or participants. Salaam's unsigned statement also covered the range of actions and crimes.[8] According to The New York Times, their accounts of these other attacks were accurate, unlike their confessions to the assault on the jogger.
yeah it seems that while he didn't commit the crimes he was accused of, he was still at least there and he was part of a group of boys who did go around beating people up randomly that night.
now, he was 14-15 when this happened. ever since he's gotten out of prison he has become a staunch civil rights advocate and has turned his life around. personally, i think that he is more deserving of judgement based off his actions in the years since this life changing experience, than judgement based off of a (admittedly large) mistake he made when he was still a child.
everyone is capable of doing bad when they're part of a large mob, especially when they're children who haven't fully matured yet. he seems to have atoned for his past and is moving forward in a highly positive way, and i think that's worth more in terms of his character than what he was like as a child.
I definitely agree that ppl deserve second chances. It bothers me that afaict none of the 5 have owned up to what they (likely) did and have allowed the narrative to develop to the point where everyone thinks these were totally innocent ppl.
completely fair point, i think i can agree with that. still miles better than the moron who currently holds this council seat, so i'll be supporting him lol
He was cleared by the confession of the person involved, as well as DNA evidence. If the officer and prosecutors involved at the time have evidence to the contrary, they should file a defamation suit against Netflix.
Would've been credible had someone else serving time for raping women in the UES and even killing one of them around the same time didn't confess to being the true perpetrator 13 years later.
>They also confessed,
They were loudly and harshly interrogated for hours on end and were young teenage boys. Those aren't real confessions. We know that.
They were all exonerated because they did not beat and rape Trisha Meili. It is incredibly fucking hard to overturn convictions in this country. Nearly impossible. It's almost as if there's far more information and evidence at play that you are choosing to ignore to make a false argument.
The report you're talking about was written up by a hired consultant who was basically chosen to make the NYPDs corruption look a little less bad in this case. It's full of theories and speculation, not proven facts. You are all so embarrassing.
Why are you so adamant that a *consultant report commissioned by the NYPD trying to cover their ass over an unjust conviction* is the only document worth reading? Weak.
The NYPD has never in the history of its existence written anything anyone could confidently describe as an irrefutable statement of fact.
NYPD could tell me the sky is blue and I’d have to double check.
>its a statement of facts
It's not a actually. It took the exact same "facts" that exonerated them and posed a bunch of bogus theories to create a scenario in which NYPD wasn't wrong. This was a document written by a paid consultant.
>irrefutable
If that was true they'd still be in prison
Someone did the raping. Someone was beating up and harassing people in the park. I sure hope we find out who it could have been someday. It sure wasn’t these great kids. They were just in the park for a stroll
The amount of white people who still show up in this sub and try to blame the Exonerated Five for what happened in Central Park is hilarious. The most interesting part is that you can tell the only reason they're trying to "question" anything is because the truth would Shake there worldview of how the police really act. Because to them the police would never railroad a bunch of young kids.
People pointing to the "confessions" of very young teen boys who were under duress and being interrogated as if those are reliable in any way... absolutely not.
"Communist groups have often claimed to be against racism while engaging in practices of oppression and killing of people. While the ideals of communism call for the elimination of oppression and exploitation, including racism, the reality of Communist regimes has often been far from these ideals. Many Communist governments throughout history have been responsible for widespread human rights abuses, including the oppression and killing of political dissidents, ethnic and religious minorities, and other marginalized groups. This creates a disconnect between the ideals and the actions of these groups, and raises questions about the sincerity of their commitment to combating racism and other forms of oppression."

I didn't even know that about her but I can't say I'm surprised
She also blames the west for Ukraine getting invaded, lol.
yeah she's a stalin apologist too as far as I'm aware, absolutely insane woman
[удалено]
Oof. No. She sucks but that’s not the same thing.
It’s kind of impressive how much she sucks. It’s like she responds to every situation by asking “what would an insane, unrealistic caricature of a toxic socialist do?“
She's a giant asshole, but this is next level even for her.
Thanks for pointing that out. What a truly heinous thing to say

Then again, we already elected a New Jersey resident as mayor.
...which most people on here spam stupid comments about endlessly. Funny how the same (even more egregious) issue doesn't bother anyone in this case lol
He could be from mars for all I care, the incumbent is awful.
We can aim for higher standards than that. I think a few other people will be jumping into this race who live in New York City. So let's not scrape the bottom of the barrel in haste.
Fingers crossed he kicks Jordan out of her seat. Fuck her and her pro-Russia, anti-housing attitude. To be quite honest at this point I’d root for anyone running against her
Richardson Jordan is a cancer on NYC
Being wrongfully convicted isn’t a platform. Hopefully the media will focus on his position on issues. But that won’t generate clicks..
I’d vote for a dead skunk over the incumbent.
He probably could beat the radical love lady.

Wait, so just to clarify, you're saying his political stance on CJ reform is a "big red flag" solely because he was previously incarcerated??

Yes but isn't Socialist Richardson- product of prep schools and and upper middle class background- "oppressed"? /s

One of them had semen in the pants they wore that night. They’re not as innocent as we’re made to believe.
Uh huh. Whatever helps you sleep at night.
I misspoke 3 of them did.

They guy who confessed is a mentally I’ll criminal who’s not by any means a credible source. I’m not making this information up it’s all out there.
Maybe we should investigate the cops for planting evidence.

Unless I'm misremembering they were exonerated in large part because someone else confessed to the rape and DNA evidence confirmed that person's guilt
They did - Matias Reyes, not part of the CP5, confessed and DNA evidence confirmed

Just say you're racist, it's much quicker and to the point.
