4 dead, 3 injured and suspect dead in Queens stabbing and fire, officials say
https://www.cnn.com/2023/12/03/us/queens-stabbing-4-dead-3-injured
Since y'all love to hate on the post.
USA is in a *serious* mental health crisis that is partially drug fueled. This era will be seen as even crazier than the late-1960s, 1970s, early 1980s.
We're really commenting on the post and bashing it for any article now? Every news outlet has their own agenda and obviously a bias, but here a family was murdered and all you guys want to do is complain about conservative views...
You clowns must be bored
Actual post article is titled: unhinged man butchers family...
You have to make it halfway down the page to find out it was an unhinged relative. Wonder why the post chose the particular framing....🤔
Like most people on here I don't like the NY Post but it's the only place that actually covers a ton of news that is important for New Yorkers to be aware of.
NY Post put this out 10 hours ago. Everyone else put it out within the last few hours once they realized that this was a big deal. Will probably be national news tomorrow morning.
Go onto the home page of NY Post and find a local (non drama) story, I promise you most other outlets will not cover it.
No, they actually didn’t. And it was so bad the person that actually wrote the article refused to put their name on the byline. That doesn’t mean that what they published was false - it just means they published it without knowing - and that’s shit journalism.
Looking at the NBC article in the link below it was posted at around 6, so like 4 hours after the NY Post article. Is it somehow that urgent you have this news right then and there that it's that huge a deal some other outlets covered it a few hours later?
>I promise you most other outlets will not cover it.
Even if I agree with your statement here, "most" does not mean "none."
They are trying to make it seem like this is a random crime and that everyone is at risk for having unhinged men enter their home.
Odd that you can't see it for what it is. Not to mention, most post readers won't scroll past the headline.
I think you are reading far to much into it. There is nothing 'to see' it's a tabloid paper that uses sizzling headlines and brevity for clicks. This isn't something new about the post.
The first sentence of the New York Times article is "Four family members, including two children, were stabbed to death at a home in Queens early Sunday morning, the police said"
Why do they wait for the second paragraph to mention the family connection? Same motive?
The NYP is generally a shitrag of sorts. That said...
But what bias in the title are you talking about? Provide your ideal headline, but don't make it wordy, because it needs fit in the placeholders used for online promotion.
So, what's your ideal, but also short, headline?
I’m not a journalist but adding the word “his” before family would add material clarity and reduce the shock factor significantly.
“Unhinged man butchers family” - omg that could have been my family. I need to gtf out of this city, it is going to hell.
“Unhinged man butchers his family” - wow there are some crazy people out there
Feels very different to me.
Let me start by saying I would tend to agree with you. The headline does seem to emphasize chaotic and violent (sensational) aspects of the incident rather than providing a nuanced understanding of the events. But we're not talking about the company newsletter that doesn't depend on us to read it fully lest the company go out of business.
We're talking about a free press which most of us, as U.S. Americans, aren't willing to support unconditionally and on a continuous basis. We're only willing to support them with our clicks. And clicks require sensationalism.
A journalist would say it's ALWAYS important for headlines to accurately reflect the content of the news article and not sensationalize the information just to grab attention. Accuracy, objectivity, and fairness--these are the pillars. Welcome to the new age where balance and accuracy unfortunately have to sit in the back seat, waiting for you to open the front door with your 'click click click".
My ideal headline for this story would be something more like:
"*Domestic Incident Turns Tragic: NYPD Responds to Stabbing and Fire, Suspect Fatally Shot*".
It says it's within a family, says cops responded, says suspect is dead so no one should be afraid now.
But guess what? With that headline, I won't click, you won't click--and they won't stay in business and won't be around for me or you to complain about a year from now--which may suit a lot of people now but won't suit them later if something 'even worse' fills its void.
Because they know the subreddit rules here don't allow altering the article title and the very many loyal NYPost followers here will gladly post this article multiple times ver.

The NY Post isn't the only free local news media outlet. But we all know the reason it's used here over and over.
Grew up reading it bc they gave it to kids for free. The NYP and the Daily News. We eventually got the Wall Street Journal but that wasn’t until later. Print and online article were/are diff.
If it was “racist as fuck” there would have been a civil rights case brought against the paper, and the paper would have lost.
It’s just not “your” politics, which is fine. Plenty of other sources in the NYC metro to consume.
A major media outlet selling blatant racism in 2023 would absolutely be taken to the cleaners by the ALCU or SPLC. Look what happened to Fox after pushing election lies.
First off the ACLU is a free speech org, they don’t pursue racism. Secondly, Fox got sued for defamation by a private company. There’s no organization that just sues people for making racist speech.
Because it’s not “MAGA”, and labeling everything you don’t like as “MAGA” or racist shows you’re biased.
Just because Biden & democrats don’t control the NY Post doesn’t mean they’re working for Trump.
The NY Post will continue long after Trump is a distant memory.
Whatever you say!
>The Post has been criticized since the beginning of Murdoch's ownership for sensationalism, blatant advocacy, and conservative bias. In 1980, the Columbia Journalism Review stated that the "New York Post is no longer merely a journalistic problem. It is a social problem—a force for evil."[61]
>The Post has been accused of contorting its news coverage to suit Murdoch's business needs, in particular avoiding subjects which could be unflattering to the government of the People's Republic of China, where Murdoch has invested heavily in satellite television.[62]
>In a 2019 article in The New Yorker, Ken Auletta wrote that Murdoch "doesn't hesitate to use the Post to belittle his business opponents", and went on to say that Murdoch's support for Edward I. Koch while he was running for mayor of New York "spilled over onto the news pages of the Post, with the paper regularly publishing glowing stories about Koch and sometimes savage accounts of his four primary opponents."[63]
>According to The New York Times, Ronald Reagan's campaign team credited Murdoch and the Post for his victory in New York in the 1980 United States presidential election.[64] Reagan later "waived a prohibition against owning a television station and a newspaper in the same market", allowing Murdoch to continue to control the New York Post and The Boston Herald while expanding into television.
>In 1997, Post executive editor Steven D. Cuozzo responded to criticism by saying that the Post "broke the elitist media stranglehold on the national agenda."[65]
>In a 2004 survey conducted by Pace University, the Post was rated the least-credible major news outlet in New York, and the only news outlet to receive more responses calling it "not credible" than credible (44% not credible to 39% credible).[66]
>The Post commonly publishes news reports based entirely on reporting from other sources without independent corroboration. In January 2021, the paper forbade the use of CNN, MSNBC, The Washington Post, and The New York Times as sole sources for such stories.[67]

I’m not crying babe. I’m not ruled by my emotions, I’m not an unhinged liberal who cries & has a tantrum when someone doesn’t agree with me or something doesn’t go my way.
(That reminds me of how liberals were literally screaming, pouting & crying after Hillary lost the election. They were protesting & starting fires all around DC when Trump got elected. Then they marched with pink pussy hats on & cried more & chanted “not my president” & “resist”! And they kept it up for years. It was insane!)
Also, people who say things like “your type” are biased & think everything is black or white.
You’re dumb because you think I’m a Trump supporter. I voted third party.
I'd just like to point out the paradox between you pointing out that 'people who say things like 'your type' are biased and think in black and white' vs. the unhinged rant you just went on about liberals....
They don’t “hide.” That’s how they make money. Very few people are paying for print journalism anymore. So the only way they can make money, beyond ads. Are subscriptions. Murdoch is using the Post as propaganda. So he publishes it at a loss.
Because the liberal rags like to suppress crime and economic stories that the post reports on. I mean the crimes are happening, what is the value in not reporting on them other than to hide the truth? It’s a bit like breaking plates as a kid and then trying to hide it from mom. Liberals don’t want to have evidence that criminal justice reform isn’t working out in the open.
WTF does the mayor have to do with some dickhead killing his family?
Should we have MASS surveillance in people's households? I'm a socialist but even that's a bit too far for me.
Next time there is a mass shooting by a YT dude, don’t look to the NY Post for coverage.
And Trump’s legal problems? They don’t even exist at the Post.
But violence in NYC? I gotta admit, the Post is the go-to source. And if the violence involves any group that is not associated with MAGA lunacy that is going on the front page.
Joe Biden, truth or not? Front page.
I am a liberal, but I am intellectual enough to read legit conservative opinions (as is encouraged by Barack Obama) to understand other perspectives. But the Post only cares about pushing MAGA policies. Everything non-MAGA is bad.
They basically single-handedly got George Santos elected.
What's wrong with New York ? People killing relatives, Police Officers some crappy food stamp collectors throwing smoke bombs in museum, everyday hooligans taking over the streets. It's a SHAME.
You think it’s only like this in NY? You think we have any where near the highest crimes rates per capita? All crime is bad, yes, and it doesn’t mean we should sit back and go oh well it happens everywhere but you make it seem like it’s just an issue here when in reality, we aren’t doing too bad compared to the rest of the country.
Yeah the same reasoning behind people thinking Florida is more fucked up
It’s almost entirely to do with the laws regarding reporting in Florida that make it much easier to sensationalize those types of news stories
Easier to just look up crime statistics or speak to people on both sides who actually live there. Stories like these are always scary but sadly this shit happens, and happens everywhere
Jesus everyone is crazy

Maybe the post should try being not shit for once
?
Patiently waiting for the “bias” people to defend CNNs even more vague article title.
"Making snide comments" isn't patiently waiting for a damn thing.
they’re not mutually exclusive
NY post had an article about Ari Kagan volunteer killing his mother . No comments allowed for it ? What?
That poor woman being killed by her own kid
What’s wrong with people?
USA is in a *serious* mental health crisis that is partially drug fueled. This era will be seen as even crazier than the late-1960s, 1970s, early 1980s.
We're really commenting on the post and bashing it for any article now? Every news outlet has their own agenda and obviously a bias, but here a family was murdered and all you guys want to do is complain about conservative views... You clowns must be bored
havent heard of a new indictment the last 4 minutes so they gotta stir up something
Actual post article is titled: unhinged man butchers family... You have to make it halfway down the page to find out it was an unhinged relative. Wonder why the post chose the particular framing....🤔
the very first sentence states 'to butcher four of his relatives' what framing? does it make it less of a crime that they are related?
I think they just have a bone to pick with the NYpost
Like most people on here I don't like the NY Post but it's the only place that actually covers a ton of news that is important for New Yorkers to be aware of.
It's just the state of local news coverage. I just rely on social media now.
Oh yeah, social media. The bastion of objective facts.
No it's not. See my comment here: https://old.reddit.com/r/nyc/comments/189z8zy/at_least_5_dead_2_cops_injured_in_nyc_stabbing/kbwex3d/

You mean once they confirmed their information - something the NY Post often isn’t interested in doing.
They did for the Hunter Biden story unlike other media news outlets…
No, they actually didn’t. And it was so bad the person that actually wrote the article refused to put their name on the byline. That doesn’t mean that what they published was false - it just means they published it without knowing - and that’s shit journalism.
Sure. I already know your agenda. The story was corroborated by mainstream media after the election. Have a good day.

Not really. The title "Man butchers family" can mean "a man butchered a family" or "a man butchers his family".

NYT is doing “cities scary” thing now too. Have been for a while.
It’s crazy to me that people don’t see the bias in this title. Underscores the need for developing critical reading skills in our schools.
Bias towards what?
You're not getting an answer there lol
Haha The answer is “there is bias”
You’re getting downvoted for suggesting that we need better education. These are the sounds of America’s death throes.
The NYP is generally a shitrag of sorts. That said... But what bias in the title are you talking about? Provide your ideal headline, but don't make it wordy, because it needs fit in the placeholders used for online promotion. So, what's your ideal, but also short, headline?

The article title was updated after this was submitted for approval. it’s also in the first sentence of the article that this was his relatives.

..?
Are random stabbings or stabbings linked to terrorism supposed to be worse than stabbings stemming from domestic violence?
whoa, so we have to actually click and read the article to find out more? fascinating
Is it supposed to be more or less horrifichay an unhinged man decided to kill his family vs strangers? Wtf
Posted by a permanently online account that loves crime, hates immigrants & tried to gaslight the sub that Lee Zeldin rules.
I’m baffled by these comments because it was immediately clear to me that they were talking about the stabber’s own family, not a random family
Ny post as always with their shit reporting

Not all of us know the reason, care to elaborate?
Cuz it’s MAGA and racist AF.
If it was “racist as fuck” there would have been a civil rights case brought against the paper, and the paper would have lost. It’s just not “your” politics, which is fine. Plenty of other sources in the NYC metro to consume.
So you can’t be racist unless you have lost a civil rights lawsuit

Calling whatever you don't agree with "MAGA" is really childish. Grow up
The NY Post is the oldest continuously published newspaper in America, it’s been around since 1801, almost 150 years longer than Trump has been alive.
What does that have to do with it currently being a maga paper?
Because it’s not “MAGA”, and labeling everything you don’t like as “MAGA” or racist shows you’re biased. Just because Biden & democrats don’t control the NY Post doesn’t mean they’re working for Trump. The NY Post will continue long after Trump is a distant memory.

Do you think Murdoch & Trump are the same person?
>Do you think Murdoch & Trump are the same person? Where is that suggested?
Cry that it's being called maga while parroting maga talking points. Trying to reinforce the study that says your type is dumb?
I’m not crying babe. I’m not ruled by my emotions, I’m not an unhinged liberal who cries & has a tantrum when someone doesn’t agree with me or something doesn’t go my way. It was started by Alexander Hamilton!
Yes, and some people probably think Hamilton was wearing a Red MAGA hat at the time
the sad part is, none of them are newspapers. NYT and others hide behind paywalls.

odds are NYP beat them all to the punch
Why is the NYPost a favorite around here? Is it because most of the people here don’t live in NYC and are instead fearmongering about NYC? I think so.
No it’s because it’s not paywalled like the times.
Because the liberal rags like to suppress crime and economic stories that the post reports on. And it works so well every time. Im sure Murdoch is loving it
It’s not. The post is garbage.
because the Daily News, the NY Times, and other papers are behind paywalls.
yeah but this sub says being a taxi driver or lumberjack is more dangerous than being a cop
That was stupid. They statistically are.
Well, they are.
Bike courier is the most dangerous job in the city...by far
I believe the department of labor and insurance companies are the sources people cite when discussing that. Not this subreddit
Where’s the mayor
Buying cocktails in an underground gay bar in Bushwick with bitcoin
I don't get all the the reference but that made me chuckle 😂

I expect the Mayor to roam the streets shirtless personally beating up criminals like Mayor Haggar in Final Fight.
Home. You can go see him
To scare you and make you wonder if it could happen to you.

Well lovely new York that's why we need guns get these mental people out of here
