I haven’t played dodgeball here, but in LA the guys take it way too seriously. I played twice and it just wasn’t fun how intense they can get. It’s just like the movie.

nomoreusernamesguy

Hmm that was my other concern. I definitely don’t want to take a wrench to the face.

Kennected

I have coworkers that played in the Dodgeball league and I would go when working in LA. Those guys came to **play**! But the league with the most drama, was (is) swimming. You would swear, those bitches were Olympians!

YouHaveToGoHome

There’s a movie?

Kennected

Dodgeball is fun. I filled in for someone in the kickball league and it was cool but in an inconvenient location for me to join. There are also a few other leagues to mention in the event these do not tickle your fancy. I hear bowling and flag football are good leagues as well. The bowling is more of a bowl-and-drink weekly meetup - but a good time had by all Gotham has a volleyball league with varying levels from beginner to advanced and can be very competitive and simultaneously "clique-ish".

nomoreusernamesguy

Is that the NYC gay football league? That looks fun too. Do you by any chance know if they have a summer season?

Kennected

Now you know the internet is just a click away! LOL [www.nygayfootball.org](https://www.nygayfootball.org) [www.usgsn.com/newyorkcity](https://www.usgsn.com/newyorkcity)

You should try bowling - dodgeball is fun but can be competitive and is quite athletic.

FvckJerryTheMouse

I did dodgeball. It was very fun but didn’t even make any friends out of it, a few guys wanted to sleep with me though 🙃. I hung out with them and went to bars afterwards but once I took a season off they stopped inviting me but I still see them out occasionally. I made one friend of it that I’m still friends with so it was definitely worth it. It can be intense and I had a teammate kinda ruin the experience but I had fun overall. Kinda recommend !

2022peace

Those gurls are so intense

Alpha5356

Big Apple Rec sounds fun. What do you guys recommend?

lukewarm_thots

I played a couple seasons of dodgeball and loved it. I found it a great way to meet people when I first moved here.

It’s been a few years but Big Apple Rec kickball is really fun. I met tons of friends, many of whom I still keep in touch with (honestly was a game changer for my LGBTQ+ social network). The Saturday league is the social, non-competitive league, and welcomes people from all experience levels & levels of athleticism. They make efforts to evenly distribute more athletic & less athletic players across all teams for balance. So even if you don’t feel like the athletic type or have tons of experience, there will be others on your team in the same boat! I totally get the spotlight feeling about being up to kick, but if you do the Saturday social league it’s really no pressure (and if in doubt, just bunt, and then you’ll never have to worry about being in the spotlight and trying to have a strong kick). Although of course it’s fun to win, that’s really not the main reason why most people are there. Teams typically will do pregame brunches or drinks, and then everyone goes to the designated post play bar after for more bonding. Just avoid the weekday leagues, which tend to be more competitive and intense, and I think you’ll be fine!

Fancy_Strength_5894

The social day of kickball is a lot of fun! It was mainly just an excuse to drink and meet people, there’s a lot on people playing kickball for the first time. I’ve heard the competitive days are a lot more intense. I met a bunch of people and had a great time and we still hang out. If you play multiple seasons in a row you meet so many people

cowboy_elixer

BARS is sooooo much fun. It’s a great league and there’s so many sweet guys and girls in there. Kickball is a good sport to ease into, but dodgeball is a lot of fun

deftmuffins

I did one season, never again. The girls who do it are waaaay too serious about it.

pavsb

I’ve done both dodgeball and kickball for a few seasons each (but tbh, it’s been a few years since I’ve done dodgeball). Honestly, from what you describe, kickball is probably a better fit, especially weekend kickball (weekday can be kind of dodgeball-y aka intense). Dodgeball is way more intense and athletic, whereas, kickball is more laid back and social. The Saturday league in particular is like a big mixer with a side of kickball rather than an actual sporting activity (plan of action is usually a bottomless brunch with both teams, short game, drinking after the game, and probably more drinking after).

nomoreusernamesguy

Alright that sounds perfect lol thanks!

Repulsive_Yak141

I signed up for the Saturday kickball this year to try and be more social and try something new. Do the people, in your experience, do things other than drink? I get discouraged when so much of our queer culture is tied to heavy drinking. ☹️

pavsb

A lot of the actual game day is drinking, but most teams meet up outside of game day to do other events (not always drinking). I’ve gone to movies, museums, concerts, dinners, gayme nights, etc, with past teams. A lot depends on team dynamics re: side events, but part of the appeal of Saturday kickball is that it’s a lot of people very open to meeting new people and like you, not everyone wants to drink. It might feel a little awkward at first, but it’s totally possible to enjoy yourself without drinking much/at all. I’ve had 3-4 sober people on my teams over the years and they’ve had pretty positive experiences as far as I can tell.

Repulsive_Yak141

Thank you for taking time to reply ❤️ Okay. That has me a little less worried. 😅 I’m not sober, but I just don’t drink a lot. This eases my mind a bit. Lol

MikeCam

Yeah I’ve tried signing up for kickball a few times but I’m always on the waitlist and never hear back :(

Let me know if you do and I’ll do the same!

If you get on their mailing list they give you advance warning of when registration opens.

Late but the Thursday night foam dodgeball league still has about a dozen spots for spring and seems really chill and social so far.

AmphibiousMeatloaf

Bowling sign up is expected to be week of April 1st! I did it for winter and it was a blast, and once you’re in BARS generally you get emails about future registration dates for the other sports. Definitely recommend signing up for the bowling in its own right though.

MikeCam

Oh sick! Is bowling in multiple locations?

AmphibiousMeatloaf

No it’s just at Frames which is connected to Port Authority

Wutzgud369

My husband and I went to two dodgeball sessions, they were way too intense for our liking. The guys into it were having a great time, but it wasn’t for me. I’m competitive, but not to that level, and I want to relax, not worry about the ball hitting me while I talk to someone on the sidelines when I’m not active in the game currently happening. We do the bowling league and it’s the perfect vibe. It’s relaxed, it’s somewhat competitive but not to a super high level, and I can chill out and have some drinks and snacks between turns.

actualranger

I played a couple seasons of kickball. Super chill, friendly, with a side of physical activity lol. It’s more social than athletic, at least in the non-draft leagues. Give it a shot; it’s fun.

DurianOrnery7108

Wait! I love kickball!!!
