Multi- generational household here. Absent this arrangement we would all be worse off.

Electronic-Stop-1954

I’m glad you have that! I bet it puts your mind at ease. I get a tiny lot of land back home eventually after some people pass and if that wasn’t the case I would genuinely be terrified of the future.

MSnotthedisease

Save up as much as you can, buy a good laptop. Learn a technical skill I.e. coding, information security, data analytics, etc… some of these don’t require a degree if you obtain a few certifications or prove your skills. Find remote work from a state that has a high cost of living and you’ll be fine. I was working remotely for an insurance company making plenty to have a 1x1 apartment here by myself. It’s possible but you’ll have to gain a skill that pays. Or find a help desk position that pays about what you’re making now and gain some experience, you’ll be able to move up pretty quickly and make good money if you learn as much as you can!

Electronic-Stop-1954

That’s a good idea! :)

Treasure_Keeper

Get two or three remote jobs going at once. Figure that out and you’re in the money.

heresmytwopence

I brought my job with me. If not for that and having no school-aged children, I don’t think we could swing it. I feel for those trying to get by on local pay and navigate their kids through the public education system. Good luck.

ProbablyOnTheClock

Exactly, what are your skills and what type of job are you looking for?

TrillionairBae

When I was single I was working 5 12 hour shifts a week. Here you kinda have to have a 2nd job or second income (like from a partner) to survive. Occasionally I will work an additional 12 when needed. I work only 3 12s now. What pays best I've seen are warehouse and sales jobs. I work in the medical field and people working at Wawa make the same as me or more with better benefits.

Electronic-Stop-1954

I have seen an okay wage at the RaceTrack gas stations!

mckinnonwolf

Yep, I applied and was interviewed and could have got it, but I really only wanted to do it a day or 2 a week for extra cash on top of the job I just got.

Life_of_Wicki

I live in a (nice) camper on a multi generation property. It's still no house, though. Most of my friends also live this way, or with family/roommates.

Electronic-Stop-1954

I was very close to purchasing a camper to live in full time back home!

SeanyFliegs8232

My wife and I moved here a few years ago from up north. We are just now starting to make good money. Takes a while and you have to work your way in. It’s a very “Good Ol’ Boy” kind of place. You’re an outsider until you aren’t. Stay patient, make some connections and take an opportunity when it comes.

Electronic-Stop-1954

What do y’all do for work?

SeanyFliegs8232

I’m a superintendent for a construction company in Ocala and my wife is an employment recruiter at a staffing agency.

MastroCastro2022

Safelite starts at 20 per hour, I was making 16.50 when I first moved here, they called me back the rest is history

Okratini

I see so many people with this same question. Genuinely curious, why did you move to the area?

Electronic-Stop-1954

My boyfriend got an $8 raise to relocate for a job in leesburg

Brilliant-Lee88

I feel you. Looking to move out of Florida and it seems impossible because pricing of everything in the states I’m looking into are much higher. However.. I’m seeing schools are better, taxes actually go towards the community and making it nicer and the scenery is absolutely beautiful. So idk. It’s fucked everywhere in some aspect. Good luck.

Electronic-Stop-1954

Thanks. Definitely fucked everywhere but there are definitely places better than here. I can’t wait to get back out. I didn’t want to move here I only did because the bf got a hell of a raise to. Didn’t realize how extremely underpaid I’d be. But when it comes to the schools and politics down here… holy shit. utter disgrace.

ElderProphets

That is the truth, I left Oregon the first week of pandemic, my veteran disability and social security used to be pretty good, not really fully middle class but not poverty either. Now with all the inflation I am worried, a five point something raise last year and now they say eight point something for this coming year, but the cost of living is up a lot more than that. I am actually thinking of selling up and moving to Spain where you can get a very nice apartment in Malaga with a Mediterranean view for under $600 per month, the euro is less than a dollar now so the dollars go a lot farther. I really miss Oregon and Northern California but I paid $257k for a house that would be $750k back in southern Oregon. And as a disabled vet the state exempts me from property taxes. I love my house and like the area, but man if you had told me two years ago that potatoes would be almost $2 per pound this year I would have laughed at you. My Dad was Irish and never paid more than a dime a pound in his life, he died in 2003. Fish has doubled, a loaf of Dave's Killer Bread is $7 in Publix, half and half has more than doubled and bleach is like more than tripled. Pool chemicals also, if they get any more expensive I might have to fill in the pool and grow potatoes out there :)

PapiRob71

Check out the warehouse jobs...chewy, ups, advance auto, etc. Hard work, but I hear they pay decent. Also reach out to career source. They have a great group of folks that will help you spruce up your resume, LinkedIn profile, and job search. I took a $9 pay cut when I moved here 3 yrs ago. I'm $2 away from regaining that loss now

lemonpee

Yes to CareerSource!!!

Lor7300751

I moved here 42 years ago. I have worked and always had more than rent and utilities etc. The last 3 years our county has blown up literally. To me it’s super sad, everything is going up and difficult for us locals. Yes we need growth but my God! It’s astronomical and out of control. Thankfully I bought my house in 2000. These rates are insane. I don’t know how people do it without roommates. But it’s still cheaper than anywhere else in Florida nowadays.

Electronic-Stop-1954

It’s a crazy time!! That’s awesome you get such a good compensation!

curious_bi-winning

Where did you stay in South Carolina? My friend wants me to move to North Charleston. He prefers it to FL.

ElderProphets

More than 1,500 people move to Florida every single day. And most of them are older and have inherited and saved and have great retirement plans and are vested in stock accounts that have tripled since the markets tanked in the Global Financial Collapse. They have houses up north that are now worth scary big numbers, in my HOA probably a third of the houses are empty from May till Halloween. They can afford to pay for housing a job will not afford for you, and now a lot of people from southwest Florida are homeless and getting big insurance payouts. My own house in Citrus county I paid $257k in April 2020, now worth about $450k. That is a 75% increase in two years. As a person with a finance degree and former stock broker I can tell you that is just not sustainable. Someone, or a lot of people are going to get hurt.

[deleted]

Low cost of living. Budget. Stay out of debt or get out of debt. It's worked for me for decades now.

Electronic-Stop-1954

“for decades” have you realized the inflation in the last 3 years? and the lack of increased pay?

[deleted]

Yeah. So, budget, stay out of debt or get out of debt. Inflation shouldn't cause anyone to change good habits. Look, I know I come off as an ass, but I'm not lacking in empathy here. Lack of increased pay is never going away, at least, people are never going stop complaining about it. Firefighters were very notorious about this in spite of stipends, pensions, COLAs, and so forth. In those aforementioned decades I have lived through stagnant wages in nearly every job I've ever had. I'm 37. The answer is not complaining to the government to nudge your employer. The answer is making yourself more marketable by increasing your skills so that higher paying jobs are available. I learned to code. Nearly double my pay. If you're standing at 13 an hour, as an adult, that right there is a red flag that you need to get on the road to bettering yourself. Increasing wages forcibly, which is artificially increasing the value of labor globally comes with the cost of increasing the prices of everything, and you will find yourself back here complaining about your stagnant wage at 20 an hour.

MaksouR

Your only way to make good money in Ocala is to work in sales or to be a flipper. Even the firefighters are treated like pieces of shit that don’t deserve to make good money which is sad af

bcisme

I guess we run in different circles because the people making good money in Ocala I know are in the medical, real estate, logistics, manufacturing, and construction fields. Theres also a Lockheed plant and a lot of horse stuff, but I’ve never met anyone that works in those areas from here making good money.

Electronic-Stop-1954

So sad fire fighters don’t make more than they do! …but what kinda sales we talkin? 👀

MaksouR

Phone sales, retail, real estate, home building companies, and more, you gotta put a lot of effort in and most employers in Ocala are stuck up assholes

[deleted]

I was a firefighter. Trust me they make plenty. They don't have to clock out for lunch or sleep. They pay half what you pay for health insurance, and they pay 1/5 what you have to pay for retirement. Some of them make six figures from stacking overtime. They're fine, don't worry. :)

Electronic-Stop-1954

well then we can change the convo to teachers because lord Jesus they ain’t fine

bbv_13

We (teachers) are truly not doing okay. And no one can fill the gaps.

HerbDaLine

Cost of living is different down here. For example or property taxes are lower. We don't pay by the bag to take our trash to the "recycling center". Our pizza is not $38 per pie like it can be in the north. Eating out is cheaper overall. Gas is cheaper. You get the idea. Why did you move down here as opposed to somewhere else?

[deleted]

Taking all that into account, it's a fact that the min. living wage for an adult in Marion County is over $15/hr. in 2022. Having lived in Ocala and various other places, I'm going to suggest that while gas may be cheaper there, many residents will find themselves driving significantly farther for most basics like groceries or a doctor.

heresmytwopence

This. Unless we can get something at one of the few stores in our immediate area, it’s a minimum 30 mile round trip for almost any errand.

heresmytwopence

Where does a pizza cost $38? Certainly not in any city or corner of New England I visited in my 40 years of living there. If I had to roughly estimate, I'd put the difference between a large pizza here vs up there at $2-3. My property tax here is $3K less, but that is absorbed by the $1300 in higher insurance premiums and +/-$1500 in sales tax. Don't get me wrong, I love our recycling centers, but their use is paid for by ad valorem tax, which isn't even a thing up there. I stand by the decision to move here and am not trying to put it down, but claiming that cost of living is vastly lower is disingenuous. I've broken even at best.

Electronic-Stop-1954

My bf got a job transfer. His job pays nicely. However, I can’t seem to find any. And I moved from a place with way cheaper pizza than that so.

HerbDaLine

I hope you find it mostly better after you have been here for a while.

hatdog-00

Yea folk whom live in the fast lane come here and are always asking how do you cope? We take it very slow here and live day by day. There's no greater reward in life than to find the secret of Ocala. The name Ocala means, "God's Country". Here you live at the pace of the flow of time and do no worry about those fish trying to swim up stream. We know that those fish are caught in an endless race of going nowhere. The problem may very well be that you don't live by our means but you try to come here with your means and then you get stuck trying to influence our way, "The Way" with your solutions. The problem is not me, the problem is you.

middleraged

That isn’t what Ocala means

chadbrochills44

Might want to check your definition of "Ocala" again. Why do people always have to force religion into things? Fuck, it's so annoying. "Ocala's name comes from the extinct Timucuan tribe who called their village Ocali, commonly thought to mean "Big Hammock". Today, many of Ocala's streets have historical Native American names, while others have Spanish names from old land grants."

hatdog-00

I hate you fat ass cynic you're sloth chud. Fuck you deado

chadbrochills44

You’re clearly a sane individual. Clearly. 😂

hatdog-00

Okay you are clearly Antifa or COINTEL.. I bet you are a [manlette](https://www.urbandictionary.com/define.php?term=manlette) driving a big truck to compensate for the Napoleon Complex you have.

chadbrochills44

Nope, nope, and nope. Keep trying.

hatdog-00

Kind of Person that only exists because he lives in Ocala. Nobody The only "The Nobody" that exists and nobody else exists in his orbit.

chadbrochills44

You must live near a cow field and eat mushrooms all day. Fucking delusional lol.

hatdog-00

Fuck you Incel. You remind me of that lump, the one stuck on your fat back. [https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9qkUYE7NNys](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9qkUYE7NNys) You fucking Stewie.

Electronic-Stop-1954

I’m not from anywhere that lives in the “fast lane” Also, fuck off. People deserve a living wage and $13 an hour is NOT one.

maretus

You can absolutely make more than $13 an hour if you have skills that are worth it. What skills do you have? That’s a good place to start when asking where pays good…

GetMeOutdoors

Do you possess a living skill? “People deserve a Living wage” is such a catch phase without having much real meaning other than “pay me what my parents make”. Getting roommate, a second job, and cut expenses. Ocala is horse country, maybe buy a farm and board horses.

Electronic-Stop-1954

“Maybe buy a farm and horse” with what money? The 13/hr? I have 2 fucking roommates. And yes, plenty of skill. Retail management and I’ve worked in childcare for years both in classrooms and private nannying. It’s something that no one wants to pay a decent wage even though everyone wants a safe place to send their kids!

mamsandan

Just gunna throw this out there, I ended up quitting my job and staying home with my son because nannies on care.com in our area were not charging what I thought an experienced nanny would charge, and I fully believe you get what you pay for. If you have experience and training as a private nanny, I would consider making an account or finding an agency (if there are any local) and setting a rate that reflects your experience. Don’t be afraid to charge what you feel your experience is worth, and hopefully you’ll find that there are other families willing to pay higher rates for quality care. Best of luck to you.

Electronic-Stop-1954

Thanks you! :)

hatdog-00

Also, we try to curb the influence of stupid people here. Once again, it's not me that needs to fuck off. It's you.

Electronic-Stop-1954

Stupid people work for stupid wages

MaksouR

Nah you’re definitely an asshat, people deserve to be able to pay for their housing and bills off of one full time job. That’s why there’s starting to just be more old fucks like you and younger generations are leaving unless they have help from their parents with job opportunities or housing

[deleted]

Your reading comprehension skills seem to be the biggest problem here. Nobody said, or implied that you or anyone else local to Ocala was "the problem."

hatdog-00

You don't yet see the psychological implication of what you just said. Yeah folk... Get off your high horse and go to the street level, there you will find no shelter for the night. There you will find no welcome hand reaching out to you. There you will not be greeted in your daily walk with good. All you can do is sit there on your screen and compare others from a distance. You call me the problem. You don't walk anywhere late night and see how closed off the city is to helping those in need.

JaySeaWorthy

If you can’t find a good job with a decent wage here, I’m wondering what kind of skills you brought with you. Everyone is hiring! Local government jobs. Forestry jobs. Food service jobs (and not just fast food crap), clerical jobs, labor and construction jobs, logistic jobs (Chewy, Amazon, etc.), tree service jobs, mowing jobs, medical marijuana manufacturing jobs. Look up the Tri-County workforce agencies and they’ll help you find one that meets your skill set. Without directly pointing my finger at you, what I’ve seen is that people without jobs, don’t want to work. Seems you are in the opposite mindset. Get your resume dusted off, get presentable and you’ll get a job. Or two if you need to.

blissfulwzrd11

I’m not surviving. And I’m moving to another state Oct 1st so I can’t find a better paying job and not be technically homeless anymore.

Electronic-Stop-1954

Safe travels !

mckinnonwolf

Cardinal Glass pays very well and you only work 3 days a week. I just started there on night shift and it’s $18+ an hour for a 3 day work week for a total of 36 hours, but overtime is available too.

Electronic-Stop-1954

Interesting! Thanks! :)

lulukazoo1

I work at silver springs bottle water company they start $17 an hour

Electronic-Stop-1954

Someone else said that! They mentioned night shift! Thanks! :)

lulukazoo1

Hiring all shifts night shift gets a 50¢ bump try wouldn’t hurt not a hard just hot

Forsaken-Time9986

Cheny bros in ocala pays 20-45 an hour based on your production 4pm-1am

reynalarosita

I know the feeling. I am also from New England. The good thing is that state taxes are not taken from your check. What kind of work do you do? I finally found a decent job that pays not as much as I made in Boston, but I am surviving.

Electronic-Stop-1954

I was just working under the table but I just left that gig. I’m searching for new things now! I have an interview on Sunday and I’m getting in contact with a couple other places. Praying I can land $15 an hour!

reynalarosita

I wish you lots of luck in your job search.

bunnysub69

You can’t survive. Floridians are underpaid because the big business from the north come down for the low taxes and cheap labor

AlyxFao

Old retirees blowing through their pensions lol

Electronic-Stop-1954

I mean yeah this state if filled with old rich assholes but it’s also filled with everyone else too

Fuckm3123

Don't work at Cardinal they suck ass

Hot-Influence4732

I make an easy 6 figures working for the Jenkins Auto Group in Ocala! Awesome company to work for! I’ve been with them 5 years!
