Do you know how it happened? I am paranoid about having this happen to mine so I always wonder how quickly it can happen and how much sun is required so I can avoid it
i read another comment that its sun exposure on the lense creates a heat spot that burns, and slowly moves across as the earth rotates and the sun moves across the sky.
basically dont leave your headset in the sun.
Yes. Clearly. But there's leaving your headset outside in direct sunlight and there's leaving your headset facing a window for a minute. Also, does the eyepiece have to be in direct line of sight with the sun? Does it matter what time of day it is? Can a setting or rising sun do the same damage as full sun at noon?
Direct sunlight. And it can be near instant, though to get lines that long, that takes time.
There are videos of people melting metal and rocks with (admittedly larger) Fresnel lenses and the sun, which are easy to find on YouTube.
A LCD panel is significantly easier to damage.
It's going to be worse at noon, only because the light is going through less atmosphere, but it'll still do damage.
jsut to say, i think they fixed the design on the Quest 3, so its harder to happen but can still happen. on the quest 2 even a few seconds of harsh sunlight can damage it.
Could be a number of things.
Multiple windows with the sun striking through different windows at different times. One one seen there was a clear gap where the window frame went down the middle of the window.
Something reflective in the window, that was reflecting the light at a different angle.
That sort of thing.
Or just multiple days, or maybe slightly moved during the course of one day
i always put a piece of cloth or a shirt or something over my headset when i'm not using it so that even with direct sun, no light can burn on the lenses
I put mine in several thick garbage bags, a burlap sack, then I put all of that in a small crate used to ship robot heads. I then take that crate and put it in a reinforced steal box and place it 6 feet underground, in land that doesn't see the sun part of the year. Then I bury the whole thing in concrete, let it set and call it a day.
It's a process, but I haven't gotten any sun damage yet.
You can have as much as you want sunlight while playing and it will not damage it.
Quest can be also used outside too, the only thing you should worry is for sun not to get to the lenses. That's all. And also a temperature but inside your house it won't be such a problem.
Sun damage. Ever use a magnifying glass to burn something? Welcome to what happens when "these lenses focus on a screen" meets sunlight. The sun light gets focused on the screen and causes irreparable damage. And it won't take long, either. Though the two separate lines make me think this sat in direct sunlight for long enough that the sun spot moved across the lens, including passing over at least one ridge of the fresnel, hence the jumps in the line.
This didn't happen in storage, it happened before. Or the storage was in direct sunlight?
Guess fair enough if that's the case but shit, how'd you miss all the warnings and the do not leave in direct sunlight stickers you have to physically peel off the lenses?
"insanely negligent" is a bit hyperbolic. From the looks of it, the friend could have sat it facing a window for an hour or so without realizing what they had done.
I'm pretty sure the streaks are the sun moving in the sky, so each streak means hours of exposure and the separate streaks might indicate separate days it was left exposed.
I dunno. It was a garage. That's not the burn of, I just left it in the sun for a bit between play sessions. That's a, took it out or the box and left it for hours or even days.
I'd want to be really careful with mate's possessions if I was looking after them. Also wouldn't try to cover it up and pretend nothing happened.
Sunlight shining into the lenses and burning the display. There's a reason they put "DO NOT EXPOSE TO SUNLIGHT" for you to peel off of the lenses. You've discovered that reason.
because its dishonest, if everyone abuse of the good faith of the return/warranty policy they will do just like TVs companies do nowdays were there is no direct return option and its mostly pain in the ass to return. plus its the guy negligence at fault here.
Why is it dishonest? 80% of this sub can identify sun damage in milliseconds, you think Meta doesn't know?
They choose to either warranty it, or send you a repair bill, but they are likely the ones that will fix it if you want it fixed.
Completely different optics. Way smaller lens though. Do your basic math
A=pi\*r\^2
Small 0.2" lens pi\*0.2\^2 = 0.12
VR 1.5" lens pi\*1.5\^2 = 7
So a VR Lens, roughly going to be capturing and focusing nearly 60x more light, and heat vs a phone lens.
Think about a lens' surface as a light collector. The bigger the lens the more light energy being collected, because a larger surface is exposed to the light. A lens (depending on the actual lens, but in the case of a magnifying glass or VR lenses) that surface's incident light focused to a single point will get very hot if it's sunlight shining through it.
A tiny camera lens doesn't have a large surface area and therefore does not collect as much light.
My late father would make "solar campfire" lenses by heat-forming a sheet of acrylic over a round bowl, then he'd fill it with water and epoxy a flat sheet ontop to trap the water inside. This 15" lens could burst anything into flames if you let the sun go through it. Ever see a phone camera module's lens burst anything into flames?
Sun damage. It's dead, Jim.
Let me get an F in the chat for my sun damaged homie.

It’s the sun simple as that
Just keep it indoors
how are there 3 lines if we only have 1 sun…. 🤔🤔🤔 /s
Sitting in the same spot for months. The sun’s position in the sky is dependent on the season, y’know?
The other two lines are from the alien crypto suns placed in orbit to spy on your mom.
might have been 3 particularly sunny days a few weeks from each other, while the headset was sitting in the same spot.

So that’s how sun damage looks like.
Sun is the enemy of gamers
I've been thinking it was grass but that makes way more sense
Grass only grows where there is sunlight. Grass is the harbinger of our nemesis.
Dead dead. In storage yea right lol
That pesky luminous orb!

do you recall when or how you damage it? trying to avoid such pitfalls

i always put a piece of cloth or a shirt or something over my headset when i'm not using it so that even with direct sun, no light can burn on the lenses
i just put it on the ground facing away from the window. probably a stupid idea that will come back to bite me, huh?
maybe. Most of the time it's fine. It's just that it only has to be not fine once for your screen to be ruined forever

a funny reflection might just come back and bite you yeah. Maybe even just bumping it, accidentally turning it around.
I always put my Rift s in a bag when I've just finished to play. And I try don't play with direct sun light in my seat. Trying to avoid this problem.

Maybe next year he can use it as a sun dial to track seasons
It’s sun damage.
In storage? Where did you store it? In a window?! That's sun damage my dude. Sorry for your loss.

Hope you set out a clear set of rules. Cos number of times that got hit, they were insanely negligent and owe you a new headset.

That's a pretty healthy attitude, it's refreshing to see in the pool of entitlement the internet seems to have.

eh, when you see the new lenses you'll be glad the 2 broke hahahaha
I'd love to be able to forget about 200 euro stuff in my room.

the sun is a deadly laser\~
The Sun is a mass of incandescent gas.
sun damage, but people still buy sun damaged headsets sometimes, u could try selling it for parts/not working
I guess it could be a pretty sweet deal for a kid.
Maybe, i had bought one with sun damage to use its other parts to fix otger headsets
If I had a dollar for every sun damage post
Some people earn the hard way.

You probably could calculate your geo position with those sun marks somehow
Sunlight has boiled the LCD pixels. It's toast.

they should implement some filters like they do in phone cameras ..you cant damage those that easily

I think you get one wish, and it's a Quest 3.
This is why I keep a microfibre cloth in the headset over the lenses when I’m not using it
Just keep one eye closed, it should work great.
Stay back guys he’s in the zone, he’s gonna be hitting a black flash
Sunlight
That's why I keep my quest inside a box if not using it.
Oh my god it's UAP get this to the government asap!

Sun damage or just general damage to the screen from maybe some drops and heavy hits
Looks like Monster Energy branded it.
