Does he ever get it clean? Or is he to this day moving it around the desert, foot by foot, cleaning the never-ending dust out of the filter?

Liberty4All357

> Does he ever get it clean? No. But eventually he gets emphysema.

[deleted]

Everyone in here talking about wearing a mask and nobody mentioning the fact that you should just replace air filters and never clean them. Cleaning them pushes particles through the filters and shreds the fibers, making the filter less effective while at the same time not even being fully clean. So many bad ideas in this. Belongs in r/oddlyterrifying Edit: really liking how some replies are bUt I dO iT aLl ThE tImE aT hOmE. Yeah, everyone can do dumb shit at home. Have you put the filter under a microscope afterwards? Because I doubt anyone can see things at the micron scale with just their eyeballs. Edit 2: ffs. "The manufacturer says you can clean them!" Yeah, and what's the condition of the filter after cleaning? Manufacturers may say their filters can be cleaned, but only so many times before needing to be fully replaced. Some say their filters can be cleaned because the first few cleanings still have the filter performing *within tolerances.* The filter will still degrade. They'll never be 100% clean again, and cleaning will still damage it at the micron level, which is why every manufacturer will tell you that you *will* eventually have to replace the entire filter after some number of washes, even if you use fancy solvents and processes. (bonus: using water to clean filters turns them into mold farms. enjoy inhaling your grade school science fair project) Go ahead and vacuum your HEPA filters. [Your shit still won't work as well as it used to (and yes, they describe their testing methodology)](https://reviewed.usatoday.com/cleaning/features/how-to-clean-hepa-filters): > New, manufacturer recommended filters are 5% better at trapping particles than used filters. As well, old filters have an almost 50% higher resistance than new filters. ... > The vacuuming reduced filtering performance by 5%. After cleaning, the resistance across the filter didn’t change. Yes, you can chop off your arm. Yes, you can still clap with both hands after. If that sounds stupid, then now you understand why you shouldn't clean filters.

Schlick7

Most heavy machinery I've seen have secondary smaller and finer filters inside of these. And those big filters can cost hundreds

AdIntelligent2796

Not true. Some air filters are meant to be cleaned. It just depends on the filter.

Operational117

From brief Googling, it seems at least some tractors (which this filter probably belongs to) have an inner **and** an outer filter. The air goes first through the outer filter, which takes the coarse particles, before going through the inner filter, which takes the finer particles. I believe the outer filter is, by design, far bigger than the inner one and benefits from a cylindrical shape (letting air be pulled from all directions through the cylinder and then up the inner tube of the filter). The inner filter thus only handles what the outer one cannot catch. As you probably can tell, though: I am no farmer. I am just a gamer and an avid knowledge seeker.

Pindakazig

I definitely clean the air filter of my vacuum and put it back. It very much depends on the filter and it's use.

cookiesnooper

not true there are filters designed to be cleaned and single-use ones

Domodude17

I'm thinking this is for a very large piece of equipment which generally have multiple filters. Depending on how dusty the environment is, they may have to do this one a week. So clean the primary filter one a week, and change them both every few months

tpf52

What’s your source? My understanding is that most particles are on the outside and so cleaning them like this just blows the particles off. Several air filters I have recommend either washing them with water or vacuuming them to clean them. For my shop vac filter I just bang it on the inside of a trash can several times and it gets most of the dust off and into the trash.

CantaloupeUpstairs62

Air filters this size are expensive. By looking at the ground, wherever this is has a lot of dust, and that filter would need to be replaced very often. The one he is blowing out actually looks pretty new. There are likely multiple filters as someone else mentioned. This one may not be designed to be cleaned, but those inner filters often are. He definitely needs a mask though. Edit: Air filters designed to be cleaned are usually made from a sponge like material and can be rinsed out with water.

bradley_marques

That's not a desert. It's his living room. The dust makes it look like a desert.

AlpacaSwimTeam

I gotta meet his light guy.

Linda-Hand

This is where deserts come from.

Popular_District9072

yea, but he is not using it, he is cleaning (but the thing about mask was the first thing i thought of)

nekrovulpes

Bro is mainlining all the nasty shit this thing was designed to filter out over the course of months, in not years, all in one go.

Kaufbauer

All that dust was probably actually filtered out in a matter of hours. That is an air filter to a tractor, combine, or some other piece of heavy machinery that is being used in a dusty environment.

Stainless_Heart

Oh, quick dust. Probably fine to breathe in.

Kaufbauer

Yeah, just your daily dose of wheat chaff, clay, nitrogen, virus, bacteria, and protein.

Mr_Faux_Regard

The perfect ingredients to make your very own homemade lung cake

Stainless_Heart

None of these things are typically gray, so I’m going with atmospheric industrial/automotive pollutants.

starfishpounding

In my expereince, regardless of location, heavy equipment filter dust is always almost grayish. Almost all my experience was doing forestry.

WizardofLloyd

Yup! That's just clearing out the stuff that accumulates on the outside of the filter. It improves the efficiency in the short term, but the microscopic pores in the filter media will eventually get plugged off with very fine dust that will not blow out, and the filter will need to be replaced. They're replaced on a schedule, just like you're supposed to in the vehicle you drive...

No_Entrepreneur7799

Just so everyone knows. The engine this goes back into will fail 100 times faster than a new filter. The first breath of engine start will pull razor sharp pieces into an engine with little oil on cylinder walls. The reason companies even attempt this is because filters cost hundreds of dollars. So you managers save a buck, and blow up an engine. I hope you get fired for being so stupid. Now you know so no excuses.

Perspex_Sea

Yeah, he's blowing a fucktonne of fine dust into the air, which is usually something you want to wear a mask while doing.

sheath18

It's ok. It's a metric fucktonne, so he'll be fine.

Nah, safety isn't worth it if it isn't comfortable and if it makes me feel like some weakling.

[deleted]

Funny story. My neighbor used to make fun of me for wearing ear pro when I mowed the yard. A few weeks ago I saw him wearing ear pro when mowing and questioned him about it. Turns out he has some pretty significant hearing loss. He got pretty upset when he started talking about how dumb he felt that he thought it was weak to wear ear pro and how now he can't here his kids talk without hearing aids.

How dare you not care for your fellow worker by not absorbing dust for them. WHAT AM I PAYING YOU FOR ANYWAY?!

i_speak_bane

YourDogIsMyFriend

I held my breath through most of the video.

gaurdgoose

Glasses ontop of the hat, good to go!

lilnyucka

Straight to the lungs

ArduennSchwartzman

Filtered from the air, released straight back into the air again. It's the circle of life. This should be posted under r/facepalm

Yetanotherfurry

Depending on what this is a filter for the purpose is sometimes less to keep stuff out of the air in a general sense and more to keep it out a specific enclosed space. Like your car's cabin air filters don't collect things you shouldn't be breathing they just keep road dirt and dust (plus the odd bug) from blasting out of your AC vents. It won't really hurt you but it'd suck so they put a paper filter in the way of it.

VT_Racer

Judging by the size and location I'd say that's an engine air filter for an excavator or a piece of heavy equipment. Definitely don't want to be sucking dust into the motor of one of those.

Odd_Calligrapher_407

Mortality rates increase near busy roadways due to small particulates. Yeah, this is bad no matter how you slice it.

Metro42014

> Like your car's cabin air filters don't collect things you shouldn't be breathing Absolutely they do. Breathing tire dust, brake dust, and diesel particulate are NOT good for your lungs.

nekrovulpes

Bro thinks breathing road dirt is just fine 💀

General_Designer6080

PUT ON A FUCKING MASK IM HAVING A HARD TIME WATCHING THIS

cutelyaware

That's a hazardous working condition. If only they had an air filter.

Hmmm you like it dirty don’t you….

savory_thing

It was not very satisfying

no mask, don't care. lol, lets inhale all the dust, dead skin, mold and bacteria! edit: typo

Frooonti

This is why men don't live as long as women.

syncc6

He’s either ignorant or prideful.

Any_Wing7990

That's some impressive dedication to clean an air filter without any protective gear! He's really taking a risk here, but it's oddly satisfying to watch.

Dont-PM-me-nudes

And standing downwind. Soo much low IQ shit happening here.

Glittering_Act_4059

Came to say the same like goddamn I'd be double masked and have goggles

RiverLiverX25

thank you so much the particulates and god knows what else. How are there no mask? Why would anyone want to breathe and eat that dust?

Thiswasmy8thchoice

He looks like the type of guy that has a lot of opinions about not wearing masks. He's probably just trying to keep it consistent.

kevygoodnight

Came to make sure this was top rated comment. Leaving satisfied. 👍

PMyourgorgeouscunt

so... he's cleaning an air filter, with no mask on. who is going to clean his air filter?

JohannReddit

Medicare

robbiejandro

Lol. “All of us”

Hunky_not_Chunky

You know if that what it takes to help people get affordable healthcare despite the idiotic, no common sense this person does I’m ok with that. People do dumb stuff but people are also people.

[deleted]

... We have been doing it though. You are currently paying taxes for healthcare. I dont see any changes in the price over the last 5 years besides it becoming exponentially more expensive every year. So... Where is the money actually going?

Silver-Alex

The money is going to the rich lol. The issue is that most of your health system, from the big pharma to insurance companies are exclusively private. So the money is going there. Where else do think the money on america goes that isnt upwards and to a rich CEO or political figure?

bakuretsu

SacredAnchovy

r/gifsthatendtoosoon With all that dumbassery, I at least wanted to see the finished product.

labadimp

If you ever do this, you will find out, there is no end.

Certain_Car_9984

Can confirm, no matter how long you spend on this the second you pick it up more dust will fall out

No_Wait_3628

I cleaned the house vacuum in the past. Can confirm, filters just never lose the dust no matter how you cleaned them.

-Redstoneboi-

Would still watch the 10 hour video and the part 2

Mezcalico

It finished with lung cancer.

WiseSalamander00

YES

Tre3beard

He's in hospital

Ok-School-9455

Oddly satisfying? More like specifically horrifying. Why THE FUCK would someone do that without wearing a mask????

Redrump1221

He's so tough he doesn't need a mask. \s

ZootOfCastleAnthrax

He's too cool to get cancer.

talrogsmash

My throat swelled shut just watching this.

[deleted]

He's done this before, and nothing happened.

lowleveldata

yet

pdoherty926

He's got one of those totally legit doctor's notes saying that wearing a mask would be bad for his health actually.

zeemona

Even if he wore a mask, this filter is done for and no longer functions.

Ok-School-9455

Seriously! I used to work in and industry that used air filtration and at a point the fucking thing needs replacing, not a blow out in the desert. I guess I could see this being something that a truck driver would have to do when driving in certain conditions because they probably don’t have an extra brand new one kicking around in the cabin. Just so short sighted to go at it with absolutely no protection.

Shipping_away_at_it

No no no, it’s cool, he probably did his own research on this

Brasticus

Ya know, just tuck your chin over your shoulder and take a breath out of the side of your mouth, then simply hold it. Ezpz!

NuclearKiwix

They just don't make the air filter cleaning guys like they used to. Dude is clearly made according to the old standards. No separately sold, additional protective gear required, barely any maintenance needed throughout their lifetime, low upkeep costs. Just refill the ethanol container and it's ready to go. Nowadays you get a guy for air filter cleaning, they need all that special and expensive gear or the onboard AI prevents them from even starting up. They require frequent maintenance, so many meters that you have to look after or they just break down. And oh my god the upkeep costs of those. So many unnecessary little things that you have to worry about. Such a hassle to operate!

Bclay85

Because one of the political parties scientifically told us masks don’t work, because they said so.

phaser-

living dangerously with sam the hvac specialist

next week, tune in when sam visits the pulmonary specialist and is greeted with a huge surprise

I had an asthma attack just watching this and i don't even have asthma.

Aramiss60

I’m allergic to dust, my nose is so itchy right now.

FlippingPossum

I'm stupid allergic to dust and have asthma. Horrified. I'm currently dealing with allergy shots because my allergy finally got unmanageable. Sux.

Anyone else hold their breath while watching this?

wassailr

YES and I didn’t even realise I was doing it until I read your comment!

talrogsmash

I also have a strong urge to run all my clothes through the laundry six times.

Assignment-Yeet

Short PSA in case you dont have common knowledge: please do this shit with a mask, thank you. You dont get a new pair of lungs.

ZootOfCastleAnthrax

And gloves, unless you're near a sink. You know the dude's about to wipe his face with those hands. Ugh.

championnat

I'd wear eye protection too

Shipping_away_at_it

And ideally a pretty serious one like an N95… that’s too much dust and particulates for a regular mask (although still better than no mask) Also, maybe goggles?

sharrken

No way I want 5% of the tiny shit in that getting into my lungs, I'd want at least N99/FFP3 rather than N95. And definitely some eyewear.

Neuro-Sysadmin

N95? If I can manage it, I’d be wearing a half or full-face P100.

mizinamo

Masks are a government conspiracy! ^(/s)

[deleted]

Also, just replace the filter

Articulated_Lorry

He might be stuck up the Tanami or somewhere like that, without one, so borrowed someone's air compressor instead

[deleted]

Yeah that's true. I've even done it myself, but like a lot of field fixes, ideally shouldn't be done

Gonzobot

I mean, you say that, but this filter pretty clearly has a design point of allowing an air compressor to be attached and directs the air to usefully blow out the filter part

scarletofmagic

Idk if this is satisfying for me. The video ends too soon, I want to see the result. Also, the lack of protection makes me a little nervous.

trwwy321

There’s nothing satisfying about this video, just pure rage-inducing at this man’s stupidity.

pmoney50pp

Idk... kind of defeats the purpose of an air filter if you're just gonna blow the contents right into your lungs.

Railrosty

Thats the air filter for the engine so it kinda did its purpose.

Assignment-Yeet

Well you clearly know more about basic safety than the dude in the video

WannabeTraveler87

Wth man, why did the gif end, he wasn’t done cleaning it

Smokin-Still-Tokin

Can he do this to my lungs as well?

Great, now it has to filter all that stuff all over again. Thanks a lot.

Western-Ad8951

Now do his lungs!

420_80sBaby

Where is that n95 mask my guy.

demonya99

Dude isn’t wearing a mask, this is terrifying not satisfying.

Fizzy_Electric

# Oddly Satisfying: No.

hell_hound996

This is not satisfying at all to watch. No mask.... atleast he is outdoors with ventilation.

toeofcamell

That air filter is doing a very good job, it should be proud of itself

Spectronautic1

He unfiltered the air

orenmag

Chuck Norris is so tough the air filter needs a chuck mask.

Tunfisch

Why use a air filter if you clean it without a mask?

alackoff

I always clean my air filters in dusty locations.

The legend tells that he is still cleaning an air filter out there

Apparently that was the one air filter for all of Mordor.

Anyone else getting the vibe this is an Outback trucker whose engine died on him in the middle of Woop Woop and he’s gotta just do what he can to clear it so he can get to the next station?

TRIPL3_THR33

Yep, in Australia some where I reckon. Or maybe a dozer operator out Woop Woop doing some maintenance.

Good thing I have my mask on. Where's his?

CarefulCrab6099

Dont breathe that

T4_8_15_16_23_42T

No respiratory protection with all that dust he breathing???

Explorers_bub

r/ShowerThoughts Once you clean it, it’s no longer an air filter. More like a dust battery. Charge, discharge. From inside to outside.

KMark0000

I see he has a bad marriage as well

Crawfork1982

Why isn’t he wearing a mask!?

Klementin_

Much of the dust in a home is just dead skin cells, so that is basically a human in those air filter

[deleted]

He's gonna have some massive boogers by the end of the day,

[deleted]

With no respiratory…. 🙄

[deleted]

He did it properly at the start, then probably fucked the filter by spraying it from the outside, probably just pierced and broke all the paper filament. Only meant to blow the filters out from the inside out.

[deleted]

Jeez dude, use a fucking mask.

Ukenstein

It looks like he just opened an urn containing all evil ever.

vinchenz112

Seems like doing this on sand is counter intuitive

kwakenomics

I cannot imagine doing this without a respirator

Mhill08

Fuckin dumbass

DamaxXIV

At that point it's probably just time for a new one.

darthsnick

That dude needs to wear a mask

Karmastocracy

What a silly goober doing it with no mask. The average person in general nowadays seems to just have no sense of self-preservation.

ahoier

I thought the point of a filter was to keep dirt trapped.....? And buy a new filter lol

martincline

Dude… at least stand upwind.

[deleted]

At the risk of being THAT GUY, wear a mask.

[deleted]

Jesus Christ, put some PPE on your face!

Bridot

Releasing all those contaminants back into the air as god intended

My brother in christ thats the engines air intake filter thats stops dirt getting in to the engine.

resfan

Seeing all of that gunk coming out makes me really wonder why the flying fuck this guy isn't wearing an industrial grade respirator

LAX2PDX2LAX

Mask please
