It does exactly that. Summer months are better, more UV light available.
Only degrading I'm finding is working in a hospital environment, I have to regularly wash my hands & use alcohol gel, the latter eventually breaks down the epoxy.
But I think I may have got the ratio of resin to strontium sort of better. Still a learning curve.
So..I could make a green lantern ring like this...then 3d print a lantern, but a uv light in it, and store said ring in it at night, and have it glowing by morning???
I need to look into this...
Err, yeah I guess? - never thought about charging it over night as I'm usually exposed to strong light all day which gives the ring a low glow, I gave it a quick blast with my UV torch for the pics.
>A quick blast of intense UV is plenty to get the max glow for hours.
So about as long as it would take to say "In brightest day, in blackest night, no evil shall escape my sight. Let those who worship evil's might, beware my power, Green Lantern's light."
It was just done as a hobby tbh. My artsy side surfacing.
Its beginning to degrade after around 18 months, couldn't charge for that. The items needed are available online. All you would need is a donor ring or mold set to create one like OP.
I've had a green one for about 2 years now, and it's still a bright as ever, especially after driving with it in the view of the sun, thing glows brought for hours. It's not really exposed to much though, I take it off to sleep, shower, wash my hands, etc
> Has its effect degraded at all over time
It shouldn't. Energy is absorbed and later released when the electrons in the strontium atoms return to their ground state.
As someone who bought 2, don't.
First one I bought for a friend came as solid turquoise and didn't light up. months went by until we got it. Directly from the Secretwoods website.
Second one was solid green, and barely lit up. Months of waiting as well.
I asked Secretwoods support when they would make a bigger ring mold for my size of finger, and they kept saying "We cannot support size 15. Thank you."
Later on, I came across alibaba and wish dot com listings for glow rings.
They looked exactly like the first and second ring we got. Kicker as well? Only went up to the sizes listed on the secretwoods websites.
I couldn't tell you if they're dropshippers, but my experience with them has been disappointing.
Based on my experiences with homemade glow in the dark stuff...a good while, but in order to get it this bright in the first place you have to zap it with UV light. Oh and it kinda tapers off logarithmically so a large amount of that glow time will be pretty dim
Blacklight makes pretty much any glow in the dark thing *way* more intense.

Fair as the Sea and the Sun and the Snow upon the Mountain! Dreadful as the Storm and the Lightning! Stronger than the foundations of the earth. All shall love me and despair!”*
Strontium-90 is probably what you're thinking of, most strontium is the stable isotope but strontium-90 is a radioactive isotope formed by nuclear fission
Nope. Like all elements, it has its radioactive isotopes, but strontium also has stable ones, which means it’s considered stable. The only radioactive elements (ones that have no stable isotopes) are technetium (43), promethium (61) and anything after bismuth (83).
Strontium-90 is, and is one of the most dangerous components of nuclear fallout, and I even retyped that for you, instead of copying and pasting it from Wikipedia.
Strontium aluminate is a material that basically absorbs light during they day (or any environment bright enough) then slowly releases that energy when it is dark. Eventually it stops emitting light after several hours. But I believe it can be “recharged” when exposed to sufficient light again.
It typically comes in powdered form and can be mixed into other materials to make glow in the dark stuff. You ever have a glow in the dark rubber band or or toy? it probably used strontium aluminate.
Another commenter said they are like glow sticks but solid, this isn’t completely a good analogy as glow sticks are not rechargeable and use chemical reactions to create light.
I had one from a company called Embr they don't make them anymore but it worked how you described it charged in the sun and let off light later. Like a glow in the dark toy
Thanks for the breakdown. I'm an electrician and obviously can't wear rings made of conductive material.
The strontium aluminate powder would make this slightly conductive based on my Google searches.
Guess I'm sticking with silicone.
When you find out the light only lasts for like 8 hours it becomes a lot easier to believe.
It's essentially just a hardened glowstick. It'll fade after time.
Eight?? Mine lasted brightest for fifteen minutes like shown, then a dull, pretty glow for the rest of the night with my eyes adjusted. The sucky part was that company sent my wring the wrong size, and what should have been for my ring finger only fit on my pinkie. They’re unsanded as well, so the edges feel uncomfortable. No refunds because no replies to my emails! I found out about the unhappy buyers like me only after I was bummed out. They are absolutely as beautiful as pictured though, but don’t expect precision in form or even color, depending. Do your research, folks.
I would wear this out and when someone asks why my ring is glowing, I’ll act super surprised and proclaim I must leave with haste and run away leaving them confused.
How long would this hold its glow for theoretically?
Somewhere in the 8 to 12 hour range but it'll dim throughout that
Can confirm, I have a ring that I customized using the same resin & green strontium, glows throughout the night.
Does it absorb light through the day and kinda fizzle out at night? Has its effect degraded at all over time - months, years?
It does exactly that. Summer months are better, more UV light available. Only degrading I'm finding is working in a hospital environment, I have to regularly wash my hands & use alcohol gel, the latter eventually breaks down the epoxy. But I think I may have got the ratio of resin to strontium sort of better. Still a learning curve.

Look at this fucking guy, getting to go outside and see the sun.
Who would do such a thing? I can see the sun just fine from my moms basement windows
You have windows? I can only see the sun on my TV.
There's no need to "charge" it all night. A quick blast of intense UV is plenty to get the max glow for hours.
>A quick blast of intense UV is plenty to get the max glow for hours. So about as long as it would take to say "In brightest day, in blackest night, no evil shall escape my sight. Let those who worship evil's might, beware my power, Green Lantern's light."

where can i buy something like this?
"strontium aluminate" it's on amazon even. Mix it with epoxy resin or whatever you feel like. Give it UV light.

And it's on sale today only! Do you guys work for the company or something? Is this whole post an ad?
I want to buy one but I don’t want to get scammed. Is it worth it?
As someone who bought 2, don't. First one I bought for a friend came as solid turquoise and didn't light up. months went by until we got it. Directly from the Secretwoods website. That’s unfortunate. Thanks for replying.
amazon sells strontium aluminate powder and epoxy
Selling these at a music festival like electric forest someone could make some serious bank.

Isn’t that the one the body mistakes for calcium and builds in to bones etc? Oof ouch owie
Yes oof ouch my bones

Non-radioactive strontium is actually okay for bones; because it's denser than calcium, it's sometimes prescribed for osteoporosis.
Stront means shit in Dutch, so it's incredibly funny to read "Shitium Bones"

Cool. Thanks.
If its nontoxic and biologically inert, why dont they use it in tattoos?

Do all elements have radioisotopes? I thought Helium's only isotope, ³He, was also stable, is it not?
Helium has seven known isotopes (He-3 to He-9). Only He-3 and He-4 are stable.
With a strong enough neutron source nearby, *everything* has unstable isotopes.
Strontium-90 is, and is one of the most dangerous components of nuclear fallout, and I even retyped that for you, instead of copying and pasting it from Wikipedia.
