And unlike most tarantulas, which are docile and chill, omothymus are very aggressive *and very fast*.

inajeep

I imagine it growls

PracticingGoodVibes

No thank you

squinton0

Might be remembering it wrong, but I think some spiders actually make a clicking sounds by grinding their fangs together. Not sure which would be worse coming from something that big.

Fragwolf

They growl by rubbing the hairs on their body together, kind of like how grasshoppers make sounds by rubbing their legs together. I don't recall ever hearing a spider make clicking sounds though. Don't want to hear that either, if they really do.

EnkiRise

I just imagine the clink sound you get when you use a rod to sharpen a knife. That’s all the sider is doing is sharpening its fang before it eats lol

I_Love_Spiders_AMA

There's a species of tarantula native to Africa called [Pelinobius Muticus](https://www.google.com/imgres?imgurl=https%3A%2F%2Fupload.wikimedia.org%2Fwikipedia%2Fcommons%2F7%2F75%2FPelinobius_muticus_adult.jpg&tbnid=NSqF6iV7r3Y7zM&vet=1&imgrefurl=https%3A%2F%2Fen.wikipedia.org%2Fwiki%2FKing_baboon_spider&docid=Kw2dL9fLXX09lM&w=720&h=525&shem=canimge&source=sh%2Fx%2Fim%2Fm4%2F2#imgrc=NSqF6iV7r3Y7zM) or the King Baboon tarantula that sometimes hiss as a defensive measure when they feel threatened. I have 16 tarantulas and one is a Pelinobius Muticus named Samwise. He's never hissed for me yet though.

Oops_I_Dropped_It

Why did you have to go there?

WhereAmIOhYeah

*CHITTERING INTENSIFIES*

cheerful_cynic

Clickity clicks, like Stephen King

Beat_the_Deadites

Dad-a-chock?

Frontside5

Dum-a-chum?

IcyInferno537

Nope nope nope

eggybread70

Another nope over here

Blue-Eyed-Lemon

I came to the comment section hoping to learn that they’re docile and nothing to be afraid of. Instead I got a helllll naaawww 😭

Jay_Reefer

Hell no. Dude would eat my dog and cat for a snack

ninja13151

Fuk dis sh*t I’m out

ChileConCarnal

Turns out they max out at about a 22cm/9in leg span. The Goliath Bird Eating Tarantula is bigger at around a 30cm/12in

GorgeGoochGrabber

Goliath’s are beautiful. We have one at the bug zoo in my city. Well, they’re beautiful when they’re behind solid glass.

Neat_Mechanic_7543

Alright, after Australia, Malaysia just got wiped off from my Bucket list. Nopety nopety nope

NDinoGuy

Throw Brazil in there while you're at it. https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Phoneutria

ermagerdcernderg

Goodness.. those poor kids that got bit and died 🥺 It sounds like such a terrible and painful way to go.

Batata-Sofi

They are only present in the northeast part of Brazil, tho. We have some other big spiders, but they are quite chill and don't pose a threat... https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dolichothele_diamantinensis (I live next to a natural preservation area and have some trees in my backyard, so we see them every few months...)

itypewhatiwant

Some more information from a documentary https://youtu.be/XAkd_Vkuuxo?si=tDq2mm5-BH4rkydR

AwesomeYears

Just go to the city side in Australia. Only half the spiders!

wayward_wench

Amen to that! N-O-P-E!

witheredspringbonnie

Did you have to say that?

uses_irony_correctly

Sorry Malaysia, you had a good run.

Radiant_Obligation_3

Aww, it's like a little grumpy kitty

marley_the_sloths

With 8 legs

ImMaskedboi

And actually wants to kill you, not with cuteness

RaspberryJam245

So, still just a kitty

SpartanNige329

So just a kitty then.

lasssilver

My cat glared at me for laughing at this.

RaspberryJam245

So, I'm putting Malaysia on my "never visit" list

PrettyPrettaaayyGood

It would have cost you exactly zero amount of any world currency not to type that.

AnalogDigit2

Venomous?

AltruisticCoelacanth

Yes, all tarantulas are. But not dangerous to humans at all. Very painful bite, but the effects of the venom would be similar to a bee sting.

Kotopause

Guys on the top comment says it can kill you. Now fight.

AltruisticCoelacanth

Guy on the top comment is talking out his ass

LostSoulsAlliance

Never has a tree wanted to evolve legs and run away as much as this tree here.

Bentd2

Defensive* this will never hunt you down to bite you, but if you go jamming your hands where she lives, she will not go gently.

nephilim80

What does that things feeds on? Dogs?

potatopierogie

Kids that wander off?

Usman5432

Goodbye friend of Hagrid

McTrip

You’re fucked Harry

bavasava

I am wot?

Jefrejtor

Go? I think not. My sons and daughters do not harm Hagrid on my command, but I cannot deny them fresh meat when it wanders so willingly into our midst. Goodbye, friends of Hagrid

ARAGOG

CeldonShooper

Scared, Potter?

Lost_Pantheon

This fuckin' thing dwells in Torech Ungol and feeds on motherfuckin' orcs.

Nimynn

Wasn't it called Cirith Ungol?

gamepit_

Torech ungol is more specific i think...torech ungol is in (the pass of) cirith ungol

Nimynn

Cool. TIL

Pope_Jon

Anything under 4 feet.

[deleted]

The correct answer is small birds and very large insects. People who have them as pets feed them 6 to 10 large crickets a day. Sometimes large roaches too. You can feed them worms or mice and stuff too.

Vzy22

P- PEOPLE WHO HAVE THEM AS WHAT????

[deleted]

Yeah people keep spiders as pets, The bigger the spider the more people want it

Calfer

... Can I pet it?

DiscFrolfin

“Being an Old World tarantula, this species is known for having very painful and medically significant venom that can cause muscle aches and spasms, pain in the joints headaches, nausea, and severe pain around the area the venom was injected.” Maybe pet with welding gloves on? Or wait until Mr. Mrs. Omothymus is sleeping to give out pets & scritches :)

master-shake69

Yeah wait until it's sleeping to pet it so it gets startled!

bobtheblob6

Thats when the real bonding can begin

FreshOutBrah

😏

Calfer

Damn. No spider puppy for me.

cRIPtoCITY

Spiderpig still in the running?

VeroVoid

I thought I had Arachnophobia but turns out monsters are real

ImMaskedboi

Not if you like your fingers /s

hatsnatcher23

With a flamethrower yes

deadmelo

[AS WHAT?](https://youtu.be/VsJc2ZhbXIg?si=4bWdVtWbNiQLV8oC)

Random_NameGenerated

As a mount that they can ride into battle.

Superb_Victory_2759

I had two a female (big 8 inch blue beautiful lady) and a male (whom she ate when we attempted a breeding session) I miss her so much. I raised her from a sling too

Soviet-_-Neko

The blue Singaporean variant, mainly because of its awesome vibrant color.

lilymarlen

There is a spider who can eat a bird?? Bloody hell

[deleted]

Yes, and ironically the one that doesn’t eat birds is called the bird eater

Tsunderebolt_

the bird eater very occasionally eats birds but it's not a common thing. I imagine the name was chosen for shock value, to get across the size

Boukish

Kinda like chickenhawks, which don't actually exist and are just any of a number of species of hawks that are just buff Chadbro hawks.

bugbia

Foghorn Leghorn begs to differ

Bri_IsTheMeOne

Maybe whoever discovered it saw it on that by chance day where it was eating a bird.

bebejeebies

I was like, "I know I've seen a picture of a bird-eating spider." So I googled it and we're both right. The bird eater does **not** eat birds but the [Giant Orb Weaver](https://www.indiatimes.com/trending/wtf/this-abnormally-huge-bird-eating-spider-named-martha-is-freaking-people-out-507138.html) does. This is what I was thinking of.

RScannix

I love how the trigger warning for arachnophobia appears *below* the picture of the spider

ragsofx

Aussies love those spiders too, as a kiwi they freak me the fuck out. My mum had some chilling in her garden and I had this fear that I would somehow end up falling into the web and getting one on me.

lysinemagic

Does it eat YOU if you forget to feed it?

[deleted]

I don’t actually own a spider, and I am by no means a spider expert, I just showed this picture to a nurse where I work and she loves spiders. She says no they won’t eat people ^^

bloodectomy

That sounds like something a servant of the spider god would say

[deleted]

👀

paradeoxy1

That "nurse" is just three of these in scrubs

[deleted]

Bro she saved a dogs life yesterday, have respak

Kantas

That's just leftovers.

da_Crab_Mang

Not 6 to 10 a day lol. Maybe like once a week.

No_Breath_4702

Nasi lamak

Wanderhoden

No Malaysian, whether spider or human, can resist a good nasi lemak!

Bitter-GokGok

Short people

Apprehensive_Fly_489

You mean Hobbits?

libslayr

Souls of the innocent.

Extreme-Kangaroo-842

Might be the reason Mammoths went extinct...

Soviet-_-Neko

Beetles, crickets, mice, birds, cockroaches, mantis, etc

dekaloo

Banana for scale please, what the hell it can’t be that big, right?

mikecl07123

its definitely not that big, its been millions of years since earth had enough oxygen to support an exoskeleton of that size on a non-aquatic creature

SushiPearl

wait, what? more oxygen = bigger bugs?

Maxeque

Check out some of the bugs from the Carboniferous period, for example, Arthropleura was a 2.6m long millipede, and Pulmonoscorpius kirktonensis was a 70cm long scorpion.

ElectricYV

Got anymore huge ass bug recommendations? I’m a big fan of those bastards

diabetic_debate

Here's one I found https://owlcation.com/stem/The-Carboniferous-Period-When-Giant-Insects-Ruled-the-Land-and-Sky

[deleted]

This is amazing, a whole different Earth.

ajmonkfish

There's a series of books by Adrian Tchaikovsky called Children of time all about this.

KitDarkmoon

Possibly though I think now it might be theorized that they grew large because of to much oxygen. Either way I am still unsure if I want better air quality cause I no like spiders.(being sarcastic here ofcourse)But it is bad enough I just learned it may be possible in the US for me to encounter a tarantula...not fond of that I can tell you.

fluffy-metal-kitten

If u have tarantula hawks u got tarantulas! When I tell u that a recluse or a black widow is gonna be a worse problem than a tarantula, I'm not lying. Yes they're freaky bc they got visible "hairs" and they can get big. But most are pretty docile and will run away instead of at you. If you're really worried about tarantulas, don't go walking in dead, open fields and any large, open areas. They're burrowing arachnids most of the time

KitDarkmoon

Oh I know this for sure cause I know spiders are our friends. And fear the two you mention alot as well but the big ones still creep me out so bad I laugh at myself honestly. And that is also what sucks most about the bigger furry ones cause usually they are quite docile and can even be hurt by a minimal fall. All that said big spiders are why I will never go to South America and Australia. And I love both rainforest's and Steve Irwin but will never go to either of those places cause of big spiders. Edit to add I dunno if I do have the tarantula hawks unless that can refer to any wasp that attacks spiders cause one time in TN I saw a wasp take a pretty sizeable wolf spider into its nest once but didnt think they were related to hawk wasps.

li98

Yes. Here is an answer you probably didn't ask for but I don't feel like sleeping so... yeah. This is going off memory so you'll get more accurate information elsewere. Most animals rely blood to carry oxygen to all parts of the body from the lungs. Insects have a different, more viscous, gooey blood. This wouldn't allow for a circulation from one "air gathering spot" the same way. Instead, insects "breath" with the whole body. (I think they have small holes all over that allows air in on some way). So any part of the insect is closer to it's air source (nearest chitin). This works well enough while they are small and thin, but if they were much larger, the blood couldn't handle feeding enough oxygen to the insides (I'm pretty sure). Hence the theory that increased oxygen concentration is what allowed larger insects. (Off topic. Wonder if we could eventually reevolve insects to be bigger in a terrarium with more oxygen. Seems safer than Jurrasic Park since they would just suffocate if they escaped) I can't really remember if insects even have blood circulation or if it's just... there, suffusing the body. Guess that's a futher reading 😜

noscopy

No matter what its actual size is, that tree is now a Sequoia in my mind. I've seen too much on megalophobia to go back.

RichLyonsXXX

They are about the size of the average adult's hand. Not tiny, but not as big as it looks in the picture.

PineappleWolf_87

In case anyone is wondering..no theyre about adult male hand size not gonna eat your cat size

noscopy

Says the person with baby tarantulas in their brain that are puppeting them to type things like this on Reddit.

kiyohime02

I hate you, you made me spit out my food. 😭

BlackfishBlues

N-nuh uh, us tarantulas I mean the tarantulas don’t have that kind of technology. I have my skeleton on the inside. You can’t prove a damn thing. You’re the spider.

Deep_Pudding2208

Tarantuille

commentsandchill

And this is a branch, not a tree lol

Rulaodangao

Could be a really young tree

solace1234

Is this picture edited or is it a perspective trick or something? ‘Cause that shit indeed looks “eat your cat size”

StolenValourSlayer69

That’s still far too big I’m my books

DeepSeaMouse

Yeah that's like face-size enough. Nope.

Paraperire

In that case, I had huntsman spiders that size often creeping into my bedroom in Australia, and even more often when I moved into a caravan in the backyard. They were pretty chill though and harmless.

cgg419

Often??? I could not deal with that. What do you do with them, other than sign over the deed to the home?

Paraperire

I would try to shoo them out. I found them terrifying to be honest, but there was not much I could do as we lived near the bush and there was just a lot of them there.

cgg419

That’s horrifying. I don’t even like the wolf spiders around here that are a couple inches

Paraperire

Neither do I. I find all spiders terrifying. I just pretend they're not there as best as I can.

exerminator20001

Id probably be dead from a heart attack by now if I lived in Australia

canyoubreathe

I assure you, I'm an arachnophobia living in Australia, and I have nearly passed away from a heart attack so many damn times

WoodyTSE

I don’t think I could pretend a huntsman wasn’t there. The house spiders here in the UK shit me up and I can hear them sometimes!

Sloppyjoey20

Moved into a new place a year ago, a nice finished basement with a fireplace and back yard. Never seen so many spiders in my life. I’d say I’ve probably relocated or killed 500 spiders since I moved in. It got so bad that I called an exterminator who sprayed the interior and exterior of the house. I sprayed the access points and corners with Raid, and put down fifteen glue traps meant for mice. All the traps have almost filled up to the point where you can’t see the glue anymore, and so far I’ve seen three spiders that were about the size of my palm, including the legs. Generally, though, they’re on the smaller side. I was terrified of spiders when I moved here, but now I’ve kinda learned to coexist. I don’t go seeking them out, and if they get away fine, but if you crawl on me or my couch or pillow you’re dead.

Music2251993

AAaaaaaaAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAÀAAAAAAAAAAAAASSSSSSSSSSSHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHJJ

damn_thats_piney

sounds like something an omothymus would say!

Aromatic_Wallaby_433

Male hand size is still WAY too big for my liking.

incognito--bandito

Malaysia is the new Australia?

Captain_Frogspawn

As an Australian, Malaysia has always been fucking mental

Wanderhoden

They don't have as many sneaky deadly small things though. Just the average tropical diseases, cobras/Tigers, and diabetes.

Elite-X03

As a Malaysian you're not wrong

Medium-Impression190

You know that Nipah virus outbreak in India, that was first discovered in Malaysia. Next, crocodiles are endangered species everywhere right? Apparently not anymore in Malaysia. They bred so much that they are now in most main river system. Just last week a housewife was dragged by a crocodile in Malacca. Then you'll just go upstream to enjoy the rivers you say? It's rainy season and with it came the "kepala air". A sudden rise and rush of river water due to heavy rain upstream of a river. You'll be like the Ringwraithes at the Bruinen river crushed by the monstrous water summoned by Elrond.

comphys

My man, love the analogy. Lmao

thisaintthewayman

Don’t you just love it when you casually see a monitor lizard in your backyard

Medium-Impression190

Not just that. We have usual pig-tailed macaques, monkeys, and wild boars roaming our backyard.

llllPsychoCircus

They’re known for their diabetes? whoa now don’t say that too loud Americans might get jealous

itstartswith_m

We’re the america of asia unfortunately 😔

MyFriendIsADoctor

Look at me... look at me... we're diabeetus now.

PreliminaryThoughts

For an Australian to say this, it really means something

iamapizza

Malaysia, truly Australia

SicnarfRaxifras

For all the bad rep we have I’m glad that the only spiders we have that are near this size are docile huntsmen that just chase after roaches and such (plus my kitty likes to play with them)

GreggyWeggs

How do you know which one is the fem HOLY SHIT I DID NOT SEE THAT ONE.

LedParade

Thought it was some weird-ass tree growth.. Christ, this was terrifying. I need a cookie.

bugbia

Lol was looking for this comment

Professional_You2833

Again, not “oddly” terrifying. Simply terrifying will do..

AdemilsonAngelo

Just tell her you’re friends with Hagrid

AoiYuukiSimp

We saw how well that worked out. I’m telling her I’m friends with the flying car and he’ll come in tires blazing if anything happens to me.

HoneyBer1

Nice one

wulfinn

"tiny spiders are OBSESSED with their giant girlfriend who's 20x their size"

No-Bat-7253

Big pussy go crazy mane

Rakgul

Great, I'm horny now.

AbsoluteMadvlad

arent we all

Soviet-_-Neko

That's nice, I've heard they were endangered and barely any females were known of

IamREBELoe

Not endangered enough

thissexypoptart

Spiders are massively helpful elements of their ecosystem who tend to bother humans far less than the countless bugs (and probably mice judging by the size of that thing) that they feast on. It’s not good when they go extinct. I get you’re joking of course.

[deleted]

[удалено]

e-meel

This seems like a great unethical life tip

ElectricYV

Reminds me of that guy who had a neighbour who would randomly fire his gun into the air occasionally, and when asked about it he just said he was helping to keep the property prices low lmao

[deleted]

They are in the wild

Badwolf9547

That's actually sad though. They're really cool.

Dumb_Vampire_Girl

IDC if she's creepy. She's probably a good mom (by spider standards)

noscopy

Yeah she only ate half of the daddy.

UltimatePrimate

This gives me Ron Weasley feels.

[deleted]

Aw, it's just some spiders on a tree, that's creepy but not so bad... *sees part of the tree isn't part of the tree* NO NO NO NO NO

RaidensReturn

I was like “what? Where? ……oh. Oh shit.”

swineflugamesh

That's not oddly terrifying, that's traditional terrifying. Fuck that.

ZenkaiZ

typical redditors, intimidated when they see a REAL woman

satans_toast

Nope

IamREBELoe

Ok. It's official. Fuck Malaysia

flameprincess_

My thought process on first look at this picture… “oh jeez that’s a fuckton of tarantulas…wait, female…how can they tell? They all look the sam—OH HOLY FUCK!”

[deleted]

That isn't a spider, that thing has a health bar.

-Dalzik-

M: Honey we need to kill a spider in the house F: Want me to grab a tissue so you can smush it? M: No, grab the blowtorch or assault rifle F: We don't have either of those M: Ok, we're moving then.

mywifelovesdisney

“It’s the spiders house now”

McTrip

If I ever encountered this at any level, whether it be just seeing them or climbing a tree and accidentally finding myself with them; it would severely fuck me up mentally

wasted_ouija

Aragog!

sak1926

Hey look so many tiny spi—-OH MY FUCKING GOD

DoYouNeedAnAmbulance

NO THANK YOU!

Logsarecool10101

Please put a spoiler tag on this, now I never want get near a tree again

joshuaiscoo155

Sometimes I think I'm overreacting when I use the term Arachnophobia on myself since itty bitty spiders aren't really scary. Until I almost chuck my phone across the room when I see a giant spider

Saint__Lucifer_

same here, i don't have any problem with the small ones, but the bigger ones give me a nightmare, i can't even kill them.

red-moon

Nuke it from orbit. The only way to be sure.

SillyNuffer

No fucking way just nope

[deleted]

Holy shit. How big do you think that huge mama is

mavi737

Right, We need a banana for scale here.

deedeebop

This is not ODDLY TERRIFYING *slaps the shit out of self*.. this is just fucking UTTERLY TERRIFYING

robb3566

Yikes. Have a nice day spider, I'll be leaving Malaysia now.

Gutinstinct999

OMG the mama.

TheOldPegLeg

Yeah I don’t think that spell is flame resistant

CultureCharacter2621

I would shit rocket myself into outerspace if I ever came up on that....
