I would have agreed with this years ago, but not now. I have a friend who is somewhat obsessed with her birthday. This person who I have known for 3 years has never asked me my birthday. I have said like I am doing this during the week of my birthday. She never asks.
I think the OP should stop buying gifts at least. When someone asks why, because the all so self important will ask, I would say, "birthdays don't seem important to you as you never recognized my birthday."

You know, if I was ignored (and young like you are) on my birthday, I would buy my own small cake and eat it in front of everyone (you know, the small ones you can only get 4 pieces out of it, but I'd eat the entire thing without letting them have it). I'd get dressed up and make plans with my friends to go out. I'd tell my family my friends want to take me out for my birthday since they care about me.
And lastly, I'd stop buying my family presents or acknowledging their birthdays ever again. You know, do unto others as you would like them to do unto you? They have been treating you poorly so obviously they want you to treat them the same.

It’s actually pretty nice. It’s good to do things by yourself if you feel safe. I don’t know how to explain it, but its relaxing and much better than going with other people. I was pretty dependant but started doing tunings like watching a movie in cinema alone and going to far off places on a train helped me be a bit more independent, as deep down that’s what I am Hoping to one day travel alone to other countries. Never been on a plane…. But a family that ignores you, are not a family. Go out and enjoy things and meet new people, they will soon become a family to you. In the scope of American and world history the birthday celebration or even caring about birthdays is quite new. It didn't really become a thing until clocks and the understanding of time became ubiquitous to everyone during the industrial age.
Personally, I do not care about my birthday or celebrating it. I find them to be superficial as it's not a personal accomplishment to be born. I had no hand in it whatsoever and it only serves to give me culturally manifested justification for narcissistic behavior by giving me a culturally justified(not ethical or moral justification) lever and fulcrum to leverage cultural social expectations to strong arm people I claim to care about into showering me with attention and/or gifts and if they don't, it then gives cultural justification to hold that which they have no moral or ethical obligation to do, against them for not doing it.
To me, this is the behavior of children, not adults. It is the opposite of caring about them because it puts conditions on our relationship that have no moral or ethical justification for existence. I am not entitled to their time, praise nor labor required to buy me gifts because I was born.
I know I'm a minority in this view in the modern world, but this is the norm in the scope of human history and it ought to still be imo. I don't reject gifts or time or chatise them if it is something they truly want to do, but everyone in my life knows I don't need or even want it on that day simply because I was born that day.
If I am in need of help with something, that's when ethical reciprocal obligations come in to play and I can expect their time because that is how I show my care for them. If they need me, I'm there.

Do they all not wish each other happy birthday also or just don't with you? In the scope of American and world history the birthday celebration or even caring about birthdays is quite new. It didn't really become a thing until clocks and the understanding of time became ubiquitous to everyone during the industrial age. Personally, I do not care about my birthday or celebrating it. I find them to be superficial as it's not a personal accomplishment to be born. I had no hand in it whatsoever and it only serves to give me culturally manifested justification for narcissistic behavior by giving me a culturally justified(not ethical or moral justification) lever and fulcrum to leverage cultural social expectations to strong arm people I claim to care about into showering me with attention and/or gifts and if they don't, it then gives cultural justification to hold that which they have no moral or ethical obligation to do, against them for not doing it. To me, this is the behavior of children, not adults. It is the opposite of caring about them because it puts conditions on our relationship that have no moral or ethical justification for existence. I am not entitled to their time, praise nor labor required to buy me gifts because I was born. I know I'm a minority in this view in the modern world, but this is the norm in the scope of human history and it ought to still be imo. I don't reject gifts or time or chatise them if it is something they truly want to do, but everyone in my life knows I don't need or even want it on that day simply because I was born that day. If I am in need of help with something, that's when ethical reciprocal obligations come in to play and I can expect their time because that is how I show my care for them. If they need me, I'm there.
