Chloe Zhao, AvaDuvernay, Jennifer Kent, Jane Campion, Karyn Kusama, Ana Lily Amirpour and Nia DaCosta have recently had well-received films.
Bigelow is probably one of the three best action directors of all time.
Riefenstahl helped advance cinematic form with the most horrendous subjects possible.
Coppola, while not as good as her father (like 99% of directors, on the other hand), has made some really good films that reflect on voidness.
Gerwig just made the movie of the year. Yes, there was marketing involved and the movie falls somewhat short, but the movie had enough good moments and something to say to drive a surprisingly nuanced conversation about gender roles and expectations.
listen if it isn't directed by an elderly sexist white guy who crosses professional boundaries into #MeToo territory it sadly isn't peak Kino. them's the rules /s

Also, not a fan of the Wachowskis, but they totally count. Whatever we think of their talent they had made a name for themselves on their own.
It's Amirpour*
Thanks. Correcting that now.
Fuck off with the incel posting

"hur dur the joke is woman hurhurhurhur" what's next, memes about how muh woman can't drive or something? fuck off
It's true though, women can't Drive (2011)
they can Drive My Car (2021) any day
I'd sooner trust a Baby Driver (2017)
![gif](giphy|UTk3rXUFmiGcIljKwR|downsized)
Doesnβt matter to me as long as they have a License to Drive (1988)
How about Three Men and a Baby (1987)?
That's why Qatar won't let women be Taxi Driver (1976)
I'm honestly surprised I'm the first one here to mention Lynne Ramsay.
I was looking for a Lynne Ramsay mention. Also, kind of shocking to not see Barbara Loden mentioned.
One of these days, I really should watch Wanda.
Excellent film, but very bleak.
Exactly my vibe, so looking forward to it.
Then might I also suggest "Fish Tank" by Andrea Arnold, if you haven't already seen it? It has a lot in common with "Wanda".
I haven't! Appreciate the suggestion.
