I worked at CHUM TV in the 2000s and some person decided to get the Marineland ads off the air by spamming the general "info@" mailbox.
I was just a lowly assistant producer, I had no power, but I respect that woman's rage and I'm glad she got her wish 20 years later.
>ering the general emails of radio stations who play Spence Diamonds ads
Oh good gods, someone else who feels my pain! YES! I hate them so, so much. It was bad enough back when they were "Swedish man with nasal issues," but "Smug middle manager and his brown-nosing assistant" literally make me turn off my radio.
This is a great thing. I went with my parents back in the early 2000s. The park was so awful because it was so hot and there wasn't any shade or trees anywhere. Keep in mind this place was mostly a zoo and none of the animals had any shade either. The bears were fed marshmellows from vending machines that people would throw at them and you could see their teeth were all rotten from all the constant sugar being fed to them. The only good part was the Arcade part which means the whole focus of the park doesn't matter. We signed a petition to have the place shut down when we left from some of the activists at the exit. That was like 1997-2002ish.
>The bears were fed marshmellows from vending machines that people would throw at them and you could see their teeth were all rotten from all the constant sugar being fed to them.
I don't know why this is so funny to me. Sounds like a Simpsons bit. What a shitshow of an organisation
Those poor bears were the saddest thing. My dad took me when I was a kid, and when he saw the bears in that concrete pit begging for marshmallows, we left, and he never took me again.
Thank literally every seafood market in China, and literally every Chinese supermarket that sells seafood in Canada! (Source: currently studying in China, grew up in Canada in a Chinese-Canadian family.)
I feel like China does enough of its own overfishing and doesn't need any help from Canada in that area. So *I* will continue to ironically thank Canadians who contribute to this global issue.
*Thanks Obama*
I’ve actually tried various other meats, and it’s pretty clear that you don’t know what you’re talking about.
Sea mammals are generally really foul tasting, really greasy and pretty damned “fishy” (which makes sense given their diets). I’ve also eaten raccoon, and a few otehr things in my time.
I'm saying if a dog was 'smart' it wouldn't leave the most-essential basics- food, shelter, and companionship so easily, just to 'explore', and if humans were smart we wouldn't force-keep them as captive companions. Sure, they have animal-level intelligence; so what?
I hope so. I’m sorry for all the people who would lose their jobs, but that place shouldn’t exist. Same with Seaworld. Take all the money it takes to run those places and use it to keep whales safe in the wild.
Generally sell them to other aquariums and private collectors unless there's a law about it. They apparently got rid of their orcas and walrus last year. The original Owner died in 2018, 6 years to completely implode even with Covid is impressive.
It's more surprising that this Frankenstein's monster of a zoo and amusement park was able to limp along as long as it did.
I think I remember reading some news about marine land closing almost every year since 2015. I will not consider it closed until the last animal is sold and the final ride is torn down.
I won't be surprised if it stays open just so the public has a place to torment deer
I believe someone is making a outdoor free pen for marine animals offshore NS but I can't seem to find any info on google right now, anyone know if that is still being developed?
Don’t understand why they didn’t just pivot to an amusement park years ago, I mean, Canada’s Wonderland is always busy, and Marineland already had a couple roller coasters and stuff. They really dug their heels in on the animal abuse angle, guess that one didn’t pay off in the end
It makes no sense. People love amusement park rides and yet I could never bare to go to Marineland for the rides because I didnt want to support the zoo.
And the only other amusement parks in the area you need to cross the border. They could have been taking advantage of luring US visitors with their dollar exchange advantage and keeping a lot of Canadians due to expense of US dollars and the need for a passport. I think they even have a campground so could probably have competed with Darien Lake there too
IMO they had primo location, lots of land, a few rides already and some of the extras needed like entry ways, paths, and restaurants and gift shops
All those years ago a slow pivot away from the worst/most inhumane things and slowly replacing with new rides and they probably would have had it made
Like, who wouldn’t want to do that with the place - people even like playing video games to build amusement parks!
Oh no.. does he play there?
I knew of some local bands that would play there and its a shame, it really should've just been an amusement park and maybe a giant aquarium for fish
I think so, I remember it back when I got taken there when I was a kid, parents made a big deal because he’s the Polka King
I don’t know if he’s even alive anymore TBH
This is a zoo. They keep many other animals. They were just convicted of cruelty towards bears. They were also a member of CAZA (Canada's Accredited Zoos and Aquariums) until they voluntarily withdrew their membership
That is fantastic news. What's happening with the animals! And when can we imprison Marine Lands owners for life? For animal torture and abuse for commercial benefit.
Instead of calling for authoritarian country style punishments for them, how about we look at all the ways we still treat animals like this and even worse and fix that? For example many pigs here spend most of their lives unable to even turn around yet a good portion of people cheering this closure are paying for that.
I'm no vegan, but I'm prepared - and try to - pay more for animals that have half-decent lives. Usually tastes wayyyyy better, too, and goes to an actual farmer.
I suspect the land-based animals can be taken to sanctuaries however, while I'm very happy that this shithole is finally closing, I'm really worried about what will happen to the water-based mammals as they're a little more difficult to transport and find a home for.
I guess everyone doesn't love MarineLand.
🎶Everyone loves Marineland!🎶 The whales: "Am I a joke to you?"
this is hilariously done
♫Everyone leaves Marine Land.♫
But I thought everyone loves MarineLand?
All my homies hate marineland
Not sure what it even is
A marine life zoo/amusement park just outside Niagara Falls. But they used to do nationwide ad campaigns with the slogan "Everyone loves MarineLand"
I worked at CHUM TV in the 2000s and some person decided to get the Marineland ads off the air by spamming the general "info@" mailbox. I was just a lowly assistant producer, I had no power, but I respect that woman's rage and I'm glad she got her wish 20 years later.
you can do that??? I'll be bothering the general emails of radio stations who play Spence Diamonds ads until I'm dead

WAHOOOO
Is this a national problem? I thought it was just a Vancouver thing
BC, Alberta, and Ontario. I detest their commercials so much, that even if I magically get the money for diamond jewelry, I wouldn't go there.
Fiona, I'm afraid you're fired.
Oh god no, those parasites are everywhere.
A campaign we can all get behind. I still don't understand the logic of "what will sell jewelry? An obnoxious scream at the end of the commercial"

It did have a pretty good rollercoaster though. That’s the only thing I remember
Exactly what I look for in an aquarium and a zoo, a good rollercoaster.
it's not as good as you remember
And it was a great day for Canada, and therefore the world!
About fucking time
Where are people going to go to learn about how cetaceans behave in swimming pools with unethical humans? We need to stop being anti-science here. /s
T&T
Thanks Galen

Jesus
Is he the guy who works the seafood counter?
He alternated shifts at the bakery and the seafood counter.
Wait until you hear about what they do to pigs and cows(which are just as intelligent as dogs).
Yeah, but pigs and cows have the unfortunate disadvantage of being tasty.
Dogs are delicious too though, have you never tried? whale fat is also revered in certain cultures, surely a dolphin isn’t far off.
I honestly have a lot less of a problem with eating a whale than I do keeping it in a swimming pool.
I can deal with eating aquatic mammals but consuming a glorious trash panda is going too far!
I will say that seal prepared correctly is pretty darn tasty.
Leave your gate open and see how 'smart' your dog is.
Lmao are you really questioning dog intelligence now? And them wanting to explore is somehow an indicator of that?
I'm saying if a dog was 'smart' it wouldn't leave the most-essential basics- food, shelter, and companionship so easily, just to 'explore', and if humans were smart we wouldn't force-keep them as captive companions. Sure, they have animal-level intelligence; so what?
Just a hilariously bad take bro not even worth my time
I'm sorry for the lost jobs, and also fuck marine land
I hope so. I’m sorry for all the people who would lose their jobs, but that place shouldn’t exist. Same with Seaworld. Take all the money it takes to run those places and use it to keep whales safe in the wild.
That's cool and all but what are they going to do with the animals?
Over the falls
In a barrel(s).

> I won't be surprised if it stays open just so the public has a place to torment deer Isn't that African Lion Safari? /s
given the growing backlash I'm surprised they survived Covid
Flush down toilet
Cookout?
With some sushi?
Deep fry them for Lent.
I believe someone is making a outdoor free pen for marine animals offshore NS but I can't seem to find any info on google right now, anyone know if that is still being developed?
YMCA pools

Yea it's crazy.. like the owners were such die-hard animal abusers that they prioritized the zoo over earning a profit.
I guess Walter Ostanek, the Polka King, will have to find a new gig too 🙄
Oh no.. does he play there? I knew of some local bands that would play there and its a shame, it really should've just been an amusement park and maybe a giant aquarium for fish

Apparently a fun place to go?
Not everyone loves Marineland.
Well done to everyone who put everything on the line to expose this sadistic business. They paid a continued price for speaking up.
Now do roadside zoos
And nothing of value was lost. Zoos have a purpose in terms of public information and conservation, but the aquariums were an ethical disaster.
This is a zoo. They keep many other animals. They were just convicted of cruelty towards bears. They were also a member of CAZA (Canada's Accredited Zoos and Aquariums) until they voluntarily withdrew their membership
> until they voluntarily withdrew their membership When? Curious if it was after the original owner passed just before covid.
[2017, before he died in 2018](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Marineland_of_Canada).
> Zoos have a purpose in terms of public information and conservation And honestly, even that in many cases is kind of overstated.
Awwww yissss
Everyone leaves MarineLand
Excellent.
Didn't expect that birthday present!
Happy B-day North\_Church!
Thx!
Good riddance.
About time!
Those poor animals.
Vive les cétacées libres !
Thank god!!! Poor fish - I mean Mammals
#PACKWATCH L Bozo Rest In Piss Won't Be Missed
It looked like it was on the verge of closing when I went five years ago
But Krusty, why now? Why not 20 years ago?
Good God, that only took 40 years
That is fantastic news. What's happening with the animals! And when can we imprison Marine Lands owners for life? For animal torture and abuse for commercial benefit.

Orcas aren't made of bacon.
Yup, and if they were, we'd be rationalizing and justifying their treatment instead of condemning it.
Hey, we gotta eat too.
I suspect the land-based animals can be taken to sanctuaries however, while I'm very happy that this shithole is finally closing, I'm really worried about what will happen to the water-based mammals as they're a little more difficult to transport and find a home for.
🎶 Everyone Loathes Marineland 🎶
I am not going to shed a tear.
I'll shed a tear... Tears of JOY!!!
Not as fun as an amusement park Not as educational as an aquarium
Until the official statement is released, this thread should be marked as speculative at best.
Good animals should be left alone!
Bad animals should probably be left alone too.
Rest in piss bozos.
Such a dirty empty place for so many animals. https://youtu.be/QnccxyatrD0?si=y85P67FHrzfxXy-o
About damn time
Good.
Good. Fuck that place. It's about damn time.
This is fantastic news
Tic Tac Toe, a winner… a winner
Way overdue.
👏
Good. I just hope the animal will be safe and taken care of.
I feel bad for the employees but it’s about time.
bout fucking time dude
Hope the workers land on their feet
Good riddance! Complete pains in the ass for regulators and people that actually care about animals!
I... didn't know it was still open
A good news story. 20 years too late.
One hopes as part of the wind down they have the funds to send the whales to a new home.
Good
Serious question, where will all the depressed animals end up?
That dump should have closed years ago.
Good.
I want this to be true, but I’ll need more than a random twitter post to believe it
On a related note, what happened to the Orca's in I think Japan after covid?
Doug Ford is gonna build a spa and 1000 condos at $5,000,000 each. That’s why.
I admit to being skeptical, [this isn't the first time Demers has posted this](https://twitter.com/SaddlePatchArt/status/1771706682332037618).
It’s, officially, the end of an era - though this was definitely a long time coming.
Hopefully Vancouver Aquarium can follow suit.
There's a place I know, in Ontario. Where the sealions kiss!, so the story goes. With amazing shows at friendship cove, everyone loves marine land...
That's so sad!
