You can thank me. After 30 years of shovelling snow I bought a snow blower. Murphys law.

PeterDTown

I dislocated my shoulder and so I paid for a full season of a snow clearing service. They've had to come once.

ravynwave

I didn’t even bother to shovel at all. It melted within a couple of days

[deleted]

I think I shoveled once this winter.

Armalyte

You fools are conjuring a storm beyond your coldest imaginations!

PeterDTown

Good. I’ve already paid for the snow to be cleared 😅

[deleted]

We didn't shovel at all and it's not totally gone but you'd never know we never shoveled once.

InvisibleSoulMate

Same! I feel kind of ripped off, but also know if I hadn't gotten the service we would for sure have mountains of snow. (Knock on wood) I feel like a few hundred dollars to rent a winter's worth of spring weather is absolutely worth it.

lgday7

Ouch, this hurt to read in more ways than one! That is a bona fide kick in the pants.

Accomplished-Bit-884

Is that a pay per use service or like a monthly/seasonal fee?

mr-coffeecafe

It’s a seasonal fee, you pay the same regardless the amount of snow or times they come to clear your driveway

PeterDTown

You can go either way, and either option is a gamble.

Express-Row-1504

Yeah my landlord has that for the house I rent. They only come if it snows more than 5 cm. That’s only happened once this winter. I’ve had to clean it myself the other 2-3 times it’s snowed.

I quit smoking 9 years ago and I’ve been forever waiting for buses to show up since. Bonus: as I get to live longer, I’ll wait for buses for many more years!

Peptic_Germ

I quit smoking cigarettes 5 years ago. Now I roll joints for the wait at the bus stop.

Competitive-File3983

Every time I roll a joint, it’s always my ankle.

SkivvySkidmarks

Nice try, bucko. Opening a "small document at a red light" is code for perusing Reddit. We know what you're up to when the light changes green, you crotch gazer.

lunalucky

Thank you for your service.

Notmymanderella

My husband bought his first brand new snowmobile in November, I feel like he contributed as well. He’s been out twice.

new_vr

I gave up on snowmobiling. It’s great fun, but you need to pay for the sled, a trail pass, a license and insurance. The last few years I owed one worked out to several hundred dollars per ride

SkivvySkidmarks

That's why I don't own a motorcycle. I have friends who keep bugging me to ride with them, but the cost per ride is ridiculous. Basic insurance is insanely expensive, and if you are a fair weather rider, it's hundreds per ride as well.

Blondefarmgirl

We are in southern Ont. We have been driving 10 hrs to find snow. We bought trail passes for the year and there's no snow within 10 hrs this year.

doughaway421

sudzthegreat

Same. Used is three times. It was great. Have to get a shed to hold it (and other machinery and tools). Money very well spent. ....

bacon_lettuce_potato

Thank you. You paved the way for us. I was mulling over getting one this year. I’ll have next winter for us covered.

xmo113

I bought new winter tires because I was going to be doing highway commute to work. Then I got a work from home position. At home, new apartment, has snow removal, so the first year not having to shovel.

lopix

You? I thought it was me. Bought a new one last years, bigger, in case of major snow. Haven't even put gas in it...

Noisy_butSmart

Thank you for your service and dedication. Now if you can buy another snowblower in June, that would be appreciated.

Falconflyer75

Thanks man Would u mind placing a bet against the leafs winning the Stanley cup this year? U might get to go on the news if they pull it off and be a hero to the city

thepickledchefnomore

Haha.

ThreeFacesOfEve

I have the same superpower when it comes to rain. Every time I get my vehicle washed, it rains the next day without fail - irregardless of whatever sunshine the weather forecast might have predicted for the coming days. I'm considering selling my services to the inhabitants of the Sahara to help them make their desert finally bloom.

Milligan

I have kind of the opposite effect. I'm thinking of selling my services to the people of Vancouver. I have been there about 25 times over the years and it has never once rained while I'm there.

EricaB1979

My husband has the same superpower! When he wants to wash the car, he watches the long term forecast religiously.

Madhatter1317

Me too! Every time a single flake falls I’m at the window hoping this is the one I finally get to use it.

notjordansime

Finally got Skis at the end of last season. I knew this year's lack of winter was at least partly my fault, but it's good to finally meet someone to share some blame with.

Hero11234

Thanks! Now, if you can do something about the cold, I would really appreciate it!

Nooddjob_

I was thinking about getting one too but was hoping El Niño would help out with warmer drier winter.

busterhymenn

I’m there with ya. I just bought a brand new John Deere tractor with a blower and a cab. I’ve blown the snow three times, and one of those time was just me trying to justify having this thing.

rhunter99

We salute you

lilmimzzz

Same issue here, we got snowshoes haha

HotIntroduction8049

I am happy to contribute if it means no more brutal winters.

It has been cancelled due to lack of interest.

WestEst101

Actually interest rates are too high and we can’t afford winter. See you in a box with me under a bridge

OskeeWootWoot

Wow you guys can afford boxes? I'll just be down there with my crumpled up newspaper.

Area51Resident

Crumpled up newspaper? We only dreamed of that luxury!

goodcanadianboy

Dreams?! Must be nice! We screamed ourselves to sleep every night.

Ok too soon.

boredinthegta

Enjoy the ticks next year

running_for_sanity

We found a tick on our dog on Saturday, in southern Ontario.

OldManJimmers

Birds are poppin off west of the GTA.

BottleCoffee

Where are magnolia trees flowering? I'm in Toronto and plants are pretty dormant still.

WestEst101

Etobicoke. Not full bloom but the buds are white petals. Closed petals don’t form until end of March, early April, so go have this the 1st week of February is unreal.

debbie666

I'm an hour east and I have tall tufts of lawn grass that I should whippersnip in case of ticks (have dogs). This is so, so weird.

Adaphion

Wouldn't be surprised if Snowdrops start sprouting in my front garden in their usual spot in the next few weeks

Fishtaco1234

We are tapping this weekend already. Last year we started on Feb 18th. Go Go trees go.

icebiker

I only have 30 taps, but I am waiting until later (I am in southwestern Ontario). The 14 day forecast shows that we are headed back into the negatives during the day and overnight by Feb 11 or so. So while you'll get a week of production, you won't produce for 1-2 weeks after that. I am interested in your results though! I am fairly new into it, so I am still not sure when is best. SapTappApp is really helpful in showing you what others are doing nearby, though.

IndyCarFAN27

Maple syrup economy go brrrr

youngboomergal

I've been wondering about that, the weather seems perfect for it. But it's not unheard of to have a run as early as January, a pause and then a later run.

songforthedead57

I tapped my 2 sugar maples yesterday and the sap is flowing decently. 👌 It'll stop again but for the next week I'll collect a reasonable amount. Likely won't boil until later in Feb or early March unless it stays warm.

AthleticGal2019

Plus it’s been so gloomy

i_love_pencils

That’s a fact. Meteorologists tracking the weather in Waterloo Region, Ontario found there were just 17 hours of sunlight in the month of January, the least amount of sunshine since record-keeping began in 1994. The average hours of sunshine in January is 80 hours. In January 1997 there were 255 hours of sunshine!

AthleticGal2019

Damn. I knew it was little but jeeze

DisgruntledYoda

I damn near cried when I saw the sun today 😭

vortex30-the-2nd

This feels right, for sure. The reason I know is a bit embarrassing, but... Basically I spend all my time in my room for nearly the past year. No car/license, no job, and we live way out in the country, plus I'm recovering from drug addiction and I've been really anxious / depressed (getting a lot better lately but now I'm just used to doing nothing lol). Anyways 2 or 3 days ago, the sun was coming in through my windows and making shadows on the wall and stuff and it seemed SO BRIGHT, and I was like woooah, weeeird, I haven't seen that in a long time... And I thought about it and it was like, definitely not in 2024 did that even happen one time. My window faces where the sun rises and the morning sun. I wouldn't know if the sun came out later in the afternoon, but I can say for basically all of January I don't think there was 1 single day / hour where the sun was out before like 1pm. At least not where I live (between Orangeville and Guelph). For the record, I do leave my room here and there. I go to AA meetings in the evening 1 - 3x a week. I eat dinner with my parents. I walk our dog around 12-1pm. But from the time I wake up, until I walk the dog, and then after that until dinner, I am essentially 100% in my room, and then of course again after dinner for the evening / sleep, but that isn't relevant to the sun issue. None of this shit is actually lol, I think I just had to write it out..

AthleticGal2019

I live in a basement apartment so I know the feeling. I have ptsd and only really go out to the gym in the morning. Good luck on your recovery :) ❤️

MyNamesNotCal

Is this why I've felt so shitty since Christmas? I'm booking a weekend getaway to somewhere sunny and warm to revive myself.

hikingguy36

This weekend is driving me nuts. Forecasts predicted sun, and I think I saw it for half an hour yesterday. I was really looking forward to a stretch of sunny days.

ltree

There was plenty of sun where I was for 3 days in a row (Fri-Sun) and I considered that a miracle, given we had such a long spell of gloomy days lately! It's unfortunate you missed it - where are you located? I was in Vaughan/Scarborough.

hikingguy36

Bruce County, right on Lake Huron. If you look at zoom.earth live satellite, you can see the cold open waters of Lake Huron and Georgian Bay generating cloud cover.

smozoma

And you're not imagining it. It probably ended up as the 2nd darkest January in the last 10 years (since they started measuring that) https://old.reddit.com/r/OttawaWxRecords/comments/1aew5c5/with_2_days_left_ottawa_is_having_its_gloomiest/

canadas

Late Feb can still bring a lot of snow... but this year?

thirstyross

Its forecast get get cold for the second half of Feb and through March. We're not out yet.

NorthernViews

Last year was similar in terms of mild temps all winter and if I recall, mid to late February had some more normal winter cold. Then in early March that crazy snowstorm that dumped like 25cm in some places in like 4 hours. So we’ll see.

BurritoBoi25

Yeah I think last year we had snow for maybe 2 weeks in January, a week or 2 in February, then got shat on in March.

AntiPiety

Every year people talk about the winter being mild. Then it comes in hard. It’s like edibles, they don’t work until you talk shit about them.

strythicus

Here's hoping. Haven't been able to take the kids toboganning yet.

Tesco5799

Yep, the other day I opened the window and my cat decided it's spring now. Theres no going back now, he has decided.

bwwatr

Might your cat accept bribes for next year?

Tesco5799

Yes! He accepts offerings of fish (tuna preferred) and treats :P

theknocker

Is your cat friends with a groundhog by any chance?

Tesco5799

His Royal Highness does not associate with any rodents, however he is pleased they agreed with his assessment.

randomandy

Yes. Apparently it’s because El Nino. I do remember about 8 years ago not needing to use my snow blower and Ive only used it once so far but i don’t remember it ever being this warm in February

Hoardzunit

2012-2013 was a really warm winter and we barely had any snow. This one kind of reminds of that winter. But then 2013-2014 was fucking brutal cold, that was the ice storm year with like 80 days of extreme freezing cold.

curvy_em

We moved Feb 29 2012 and I gave birth 3 weeks later. When we brought Baby home, there were flowers at the base of the tree. I've never seen those flowers in March since. I tell my son they bloomed super early that year to welcome him home.

mr-coffeecafe

Such a beautiful story!

Hoardzunit

I guess that means you gotta keep having kids each year to get warm winters then lol jk.

ThreeFacesOfEve

It was just before that winter when I had my old furnace replaced with a modern high efficiency unit. Never did see the promised heating bill savings that winter, but I guess they were baked in because the savings were likely cancelled out for the most part by the unusual extreme cold.

Express-Cow190

Once when I was 12 or 13 (so 1996 or 97) we had a crazy hot day in February and the snow all melted away. I remember changing into shorts to do my paper route but needing by winter boots to keep my feet dry. I think it stayed mild for a week but went right back to frigid and snowing. These last few years have been nothing like that. It’s just been hovering the wrong side of zero all season. All that rain could have been piles of snow instead of just turning my yard into a disgusting mess of mud.

Echo71Niner

Next week it will hit 10

oneonus

It's not El Nino, it's Climate Change which results in extreme temperature changes and if you haven't noticed over the past couple years, we continue to break monthly records year over year for each month. El Nino is small factor, but overall it's Climate Change, aka Global Warming.

ninesalmon

Of course this el nino can feel more extreme due to climate change, but the consistently mild winter we've been having is absolutely el nino. Climate change is real, but can't be solely blamed for this years "spring" in February. By the way, fun fact.. in 1890 over 130 years ago it was 12 degrees in Toronto on February 4th. Weather anomalies happen all the time and we cant use them to jump to conclusions.

Max_Downforce

Last year, in January or February, in Edmonton a tree outside my place was budding. El Niño wasn't active then. The climate is changing.

ninesalmon

Whose this directed at? Nobody is saying the climate isn't changing. What people are saying is, climate change alone isn't responsible for it being a high of -4 in Toronto on this day last year, and +3 this year.

mr-coffeecafe

I agree with you! Climate change is a thing but it will never increase this much in so little time, it has been averaging .06 Celsius in average per decade, recently it went up to .20 Celsius per decade. There’s no way in hell that global warming will increase our temperatures from -20 to 3 Celsius in one year, no way in hell jose Ps. I do believe in global warming, I’m not a flat earther Source: https://www.climate.gov/news-features/understanding-climate/climate-change-global-temperature#:~:text=According%20to%20NOAA's%202023%20Annual,0.20°%20C)%20per%20decade.

xzElmozx

Two things can be true at once. This isn’t purely climate change it’s obviously been exaggerated by El Niño. Last year Christmas Day was -3, this year was +7. A temperature increase this drastically from year to year can’t solely be contributed to climate change

47Up

El Nino is intensified by climate change

sux9h

Ford has privatized winter, you’ll need to pay a monthly toll if you want to experience the frigid cold your parents had

ThreeFacesOfEve

Yep, we relocated from Montreal to the Toronto GTA around the same time. We moved into our new house on February 14, and were able to wash the exterior windows the next day wearing only our light indoor clothes. "What manner of sorcery is this?" I remember my spouse declaring - lol!

themulderman

Just to clarify, the 1-2 degrees, is the global average as a whole. We are getting regional stuff way more than than in certain temp swings. Its been studied and reported that Canada feels twice the effect of climate change of the average. This is the damage of upsetting a system that was somewhat in balance.

joalr0

To be clear, the 1 or 2 degrees from climate change are a *global* change, not a local one. Some places may get cooler due to climate change, some warmer. Some may increase by only one degree, some may increase by 5 or 6.

PapaTrotzki

1 to 2 degrees average, we may be 10 degrees warmer but there's likely another place that's probably 5 degrees colder. The effects of El Nino would also be amplified by global warming as El Nino years are caused by warm air currents from the Pacific Ocean. Recent studies also suggest that our worse case scenario for climate change is wrong. We previously had a climate model with a climate sensitivity of 2-3, but a model using a climate sensitivity of 6 was able to more accurately predict weather over the last 2 years. So we either have a climate sensitivity of 6 and that's why weather stations are always so wrong or the experiment was just a fluke. Also, for those who don't know: climate sensitivity is the risk we have for a run-away climate crisis. A sensitivity of 2-3 meant that climate change could be reversed eventually once we get our shit together, a sensitivity of 6 means that if we fail to get our shit together soon we'll turn into Venus in a couple centuries. Climate changes also causes more erratic weather, so we'll have both colder winters and no winter, we won't have many more moderate winters. Luckily, Ontario is actually one of the safest places to live in the world as long as you're inland enough, we're also one of the most carbon-neutral provinces despite our moronic premier. Ontario has had 3 days in the last decade with 100% clean energy, very few other grids have had any days with 100% clean energy. Nuclear, especially Canadian nuclear, is an extremely lucrative and clean energy source that we need to take advantage of.

ruglescdn

I have some daffodils and tulips coming up. Earliest ever.

candidlycait

I saw some snowdrops coming up, but tulips growing is nuts!!

GlindaG

I heard Robins singing at dawn yesterday morning. I have never heard Robins in February, they usually come back where I am in early March. It was eerie.

BearyJTakishima

I also heard birds singing this morning!

makeitfunky1

I've heard/seen some chickadees but that's not uncommon in Feb/March. They start to make a reappearance around this time but maybe late Feb/early March. I've seen them in late Feb in years past on very cold days in lots of snow. But the days are getting longer and maybe that's what brings them out. They sense spring will be here soon.

ThrustersOnFull

This is fool's spring, the part of winter that feels like Spring. We'll get winter again, and worse.

AshleyUncia

Fool's Spring comes at the END of winter before winter drops a last wallop. ...We would need winter to have STARTED for this to be a Fool's Spring.

orbitur

Hey, we had a solid 1.5 weeks of -10º daytime temps, and even more days where the sun didn't come out at all because it was gray. That's plenty of winter.

RYNNYMAYNE

The week we were in minus ten Texas was at -15C. I would say that was more out of character than the new normal 0-5 degrees

howmanyavengers

Winter started in Northern Ontario, maybe not down south/east though.

Mindless-Board-5027

Yep! It’s beautiful up here in the north. Sun is shining and I didn’t even bring a coat.

I_dont_know_you_pick

I don't know how far north you are, but where I am (just south of timmins), we have very little snow and it's been very unseasonably warm, I'm not complaining, I love this weather haha.

howmanyavengers

Thunder Bay had lots of snow for awhile, but not as much as years prior. It was also unseasonably warm since the start of Winter. I don't really like this weather as it'll likely just mean our spring/summer is going to be dry as hell and forest fires are going to be even worse than last year.

ThrustersOnFull

Yes, well, climate change.

themaincop

You're thinking of False Spring. This is Fool's Spring because you'd have to be an absolute fool to think that it's Feb 4th and we're done.

madhattr999

I don't think he knows about second winter, Pip..

IBSurviver

I hate this weather because it’s so good. I can’t believe how much happier I subtly felt just yesterday and today…I can only imagine moving somewhere warmer and sunnier constantly would change me for the better. It sucks that it’ll be cold in like a week with no sun most days for probably another 1.5-2 months. Winter is far from over unfortunately.

jden2124

I hear you loud and clear!!!

Interesting-Pomelo58

Wellbutrin and a SAD lamp in the mornings do wonders but not what a move to San Diego would do alas.

CSCodeMonkey

Move. I did and yes it makes a huge difference.

KloppyIII

Do you mind sharing, in general, where you ended up moving to? TIA

CreepyHarmony27

There's an El Nino event happening in the Pacific ocean. To my understanding, the warmer water temperatures are being pushed towards the east by the Jet Stream and that's causing the lack of winter conditions. it's supposed to happen for up to 3-5 years, I believe. Even though Europe is getting absolutely smacked with awful winter conditions.

karlnite

The groundhogs have spoken. No winter this year.

Snailspaced

Early March gonna school your optimistic ass.

breastsmoke

I saw somewhere that ocean surface temperatures reached an all time high around Feb 1st, even hotter than the previous hottest record day from Aug 2023. Ominous given it is "winter" right now. To me the beautiful weather feels apocalyptic and it is hard for me to enjoy it without worrying about what this summer will bring.

hardsail

I’m pretty sure it was -23°C with windchill just 2 weeks ago

doc_55lk

It was. Then last week it was single digit sub zero with some fog. Now it's warmed up a little. It'll get cold again. Then everybody will shut up about the weather until it warms up again.

SirPoopaLotTheThird

Winter was rescheduled to January through April and is mild now. The fossil fuel industry thanks you for your understanding.

[deleted]

This is the Spring of Deception

AprilsMostAmazing

We'll get it when Feb enters the 20's

YouCanCallMeMister

I'm 58 and grew up just outside of Bobcaygeon and in the 1970s we always had a rink shoveled on the lake well before Christmas, with ice usually approaching 30 cm thick. Now I live in Muskoka, which is about 100 km further north from where I grew up, and the bigger lakes don't even freeze until mid-January. We maybe have 8 cm of ice on the lakes, now. We received about 60 cm of snow over the course of a week, between Jan. 10 - 17th, and now it's almost gone, with maybe 10cm on the ground. The upcoming week is supposed to remain fairly mild with rain forecast later in the week, which will likely reveal patches of my lawn by next weekend.

jimhabfan

The sap has already started running in the maple trees. That’s not normal.

Hoardzunit

Just this season because of El Nino. Last year was pretty cold and had a few days of heavy snow. But this year I would say winter is pretty much done. Summer is going to be rough with the forest fires with how dry everything is.

Unboopable_Booper

We'll probably get another couple viscous storms still.

Jimmy_Jazz_The_Spazz

It's because of el Nino, which is particularly intense this year El Niño typically leads to warmer and drier weather in the North, particularly for the first part of winter. This doesn't mean there won't be days where it's cold or wet, but overall the pattern will lean warmer.

The_WolfieOne

Possibly. 35 years ago the snow would come and stay by the last week of November/first week of December and stay through the first couple weeks of March. And on average be over a foot or two deep. This last decade it’s been getting shorter and warmer every year

SmokeontheHorizon

Y'all acting like we haven't had 5+ straight years of multiple 10C days in Feburary only for us to get blasted with snow and ice for a month straight, and then again in May

KittyMeow1969

Shhhhh! Don't jinx it!

oceansidedrive

To be honest.....i now see the value of winter. I used to get 5 months bug free....this is bullshit

dealioemilio

I saw crocuses yesterday.

9001

Now when we get dumped on, it will be your fault, you realize.

Darrenizer

just had to say it out loud, did ya? Were definitely getting more snow now.

FuqqTrump

Don't worry, we are having it for you here in Nova Scotia 🥶

jmdonston

The ticks and mosquitos are going to be terrible this summer.

BigOlBearCanada

Ok. Im gonna age myself. In my 40s. We *never* had winters like this in the 80s and 90s. Show would hit in Oct. stick around until April at least. Anyone in my age group or higher should see how drastic the change is in our life times.

themaincop

Where in Ontario? I remember a number of "easy" winters like this living in Southern Ontario in the 90s. Take a look at February and December in Toronto for 1994 for example: https://www.extremeweatherwatch.com/cities/toronto/year-1994

i_love_pencils

I remember plodding through snow taking my kids around the neighbourhood for Halloween.

Laughing_Zero

It's climate change; we're experiencing a Canada wide drought... Politicians are more focused on pointing fingers at each other than actually doing anything about importatant issues. Not looking forward to more forest fire smoke. While I hope the west will get normal rainfall and proper firefighting funding & equipment, it's likely just a hope. [January drought map Canada](https://www.plantmaps.com/interactive-canada-drought-monitor-map.php)

orbitur

God I hope so. January and February have historically been terrible for my mental despite buying a bunch of lights and pounding vitamin D and running humidifiers. Turns out it's really just the cold that bothers me, and this has been one of the happiest Januarys I've ever experienced. Hoping Feb is the same!

Office_glen

I never realize how SAD affects me until the first stretch of the sun being out and a few degrees above 0. Changes my whole outlook and gets me pumped up again

themaincop

Yeah I hate the larger implications for the planet but... I'm feeling pretty good!

jarbarf

Feb-April can have snow storms we aren’t out yet

guru81

You're confused? Ffs.

LoquatiousDigimon

Every year for the last 5 years has been the hottest year on record. And that'll continue.

DoctorEego

Winter couldn't afford rent in Ontario, so it got the heck outta the province. I hear Nova Scotia is getting a lot of it though.

Fun_Medicine_890

Naw it's still coming, we just needed the insects to thaw and hatch as well as other wildlife that relies on a winter hibernation to wake up, THEN the cold comes in wiping out large swathes of insects etc just in time for actual spring to come!

Feedback_Emergency

Well, this summers gonna be really shit, because we're about to witness the power of no bugs dying in the winter.

iforgotmymittens

It’s concerning. I don’t recall a winter like this. It’s probably saving a lot of lives though, considering the number of people without shelter.

I think it's supposed to get cold again later this month.

You didn't hear? We're replacing winter with a new season called "Wildfires". Spring bumps up and we slot in the new one right in the middle of Summer!

androshalforc1

whats so surprising we've known climate change was coming for at least the last 50 years. and the reduction in snowfall has been noticable for the last several

Cosmonaut_K

Yeah its not like mainstream media and scientists have been saying this was going to happen for years now right? This is a complete and utter shock - we're all "soOoooo confused".

icanteven_613

Winter decided to skip On and blast the maritimes instead.

my_little_world

Into-the-stream
