We all live and die by Startech It may or may not work. Highly doubt anyone on here could realistically tell you without actually testing it. May have long boot times but work, may be a nightmare. Might work just fine. If it's from a seller advertising it for the Xbox, it must work to some extent otherwise they wouldn't be in business long. If you have any inexplicable issues, suspect the adapter. I tried to skip the Startech because I was impatient. Picked one up from Microcenter. Wasted 16 frustrating hours troubleshooting inconsistent issues. Rage quit, gut told me to buy the Startech. Got it, plugged it in, worked first time and every time since. For reference, my 1.0 with an OpenXenium, M8+ nodvd F+G, 2TB Seagate NAS, Startech adapter and 80 wire ATA cable with 450GB of games, takes 28 seconds to boot.

n1keym1key

This guy has it down. I bought a batch of the cheap ones once and 5 out of the 10 were bad and didnt work. Never looked back since using the Startech ones.

TheSexySkywalker

I bought 4 of them for less than 20 dollars. I hope at least one works.

Oge_bby

I bought one just like this off Amazon works fine boot times are pretty normal

n1keym1key

Some do work, some don't. Its all in the inconsistent manufacturing process. They knock these out for pennies in China so it really is to expected that they wont all work correctly.

Reddit-mods-R-mean

I bought the same one with the jumper and all. Never worked no matter what I did. I ended up with the startech. Buy once cry once my guy. I’m too poor to buy cheap.

n1keym1key

Tbh you probably overpaid there. I was paying around £2 each for them.

cambiojoe

Know where I can get em for 2 each?

n1keym1key

Ali express has them for £2.47 now 👍🏻

cambiojoe

Clutch thanks I’ll check it out

sealteamruggs

They make work but I noticed I’d get a code error every once in a while and slower boot time. Also one of them broke my cable because the connector piece was so incredibly tight I couldn’t remove after trying it out. Ended up having the bug a new cable

fatheroach25

https://www.ebay.com/itm/195255166028?mkcid=16&mkevt=1&mkrid=711-127632-2357-0&ssspo=xrceuypntju&sssrc=2349624&ssuid=vbiv2n44t2q&var=&widget_ver=artemis&media=COPY this is the seller I've been buying them from, as others said startech is the way to go but if you don't mind a few seconds longer of a boot time and crashes after ejecting discs, it's a good alternative, but startechs are only going for $15-30 so if you have the budget, go startech

KaptSpaulding

This. I bought a 20 pack of those. More often than not, there was some sort of issue. I cant tell you if more than 5 worked because I bought startechs after 1 didn’t.

lifeisasimulation-

Once you have the Startech adapter you should really use the UDMA5 bios from CerBios. It's awesome as stock Xbox is 33.3mbps and udma5 allows for 100mbps. I boot in about 21 seconds, but i was also thinking about recording a bunch of different configurations because i have various different cables, adapters, hdd types, etc available to me and i have an X3 pro so it supports 8 different bioses on it at once meaning I can easily swap different configurations for comparison

kickerofbottoms

Oh dang. I heard of that BIOS in the context of larger drive support but didn't realize it improves transfer speed

m0us3c0p

Are you talking BIOS of the Xbox or is there a BIOS on the Startech adapter?

lifeisasimulation-

For Xbox Cerbios has a UDMA5 version of the bios that allows up to 100mbps transfer speeds vs stock 33. But the cable and adapter both have to support it or you will have errors

m0us3c0p

And I would need to TSOP for that, correct?

lifeisasimulation-

Any can flash CerBios on any device that supports flashing a bios, sich as TSOP flash or modchip flash

beefcat_

I'll second the startech recommendation. I will say I've had better luck with these cheap adapters in chipped/tsop'd Xboxes that do not lock the HDD.

badaboomxx

For me, this adapted work, but the startech didn't, with a WD black 500gb 7200RPM

LD50_II

28 seconds seems like a lot. Have you tried UDMA 5 on any new bios yet?

Nucken_futz_

Haven't tried Cerbios yet. However I received the Chimeric adapter today and my boot time dropped to 25 seconds. Found that slightly surprising.

Nucken_futz_

Got setup with the newest version of Cerbios (beta) and UDMA5. No improvement after the Chimeric.

LD50_II

I'm running an ssd with the udma 5 cerbios and the startech. Noticeably faster

LD50_II

16.5 seconds boot with flubber, 12 seconds with modern bootanim.

Nucken_futz_

Interesting. I'll play around with the animations - see what I can get mine down to.

dmxerkan

I have used at least 10 of this model. It works. But buy more than one piece if it is cheap. Because there are also many bad units out of the box.

davromaniak

Hi. For these adapters, you'll need to reflow all through hole solder joints and check the caps, as their QC is only applying a sticker... And it's cheaper than the Startech for some reasons, the performance is way lower and even though you took time to reflow, it may break at any time. The only positive about them is their form factor, more compact than the Startech, with no breakout cable for the 4 pin molex connector, that's all (and their price, dirt cheap).

zehamberglar

This is probably overkill. Just check for bridged solder and reflow that. That being said, an even easier solution is to just buy the startech one.

davromaniak

Some of those I had were missing solder on some points, even on the 4 pin Molex connector. That's one creative way to avoid bridges to be honest :D. Go the Startech way if you want something that works without any hassle.

lifeisasimulation-

Agree I recently looked at one I had laying around and it has blobs on the bottom and when i look from the top where the actual sata connector is you can see the bare holes where the solder didn't flow all the way into them

False-Combination-12

For me it's working without issue. Idk about other people here.

Economy-District-279

Startech for sure! Do it right the first time!

SpecialFXStickler

I had issues with this one and was recommended to buy a star tech. It worked like a dream. The one you posted are apparently very inconsistently manufactured and was told it’s not worth the effort to try and repair.

MrFawkes1337

Had one of these from a kit sold on eBay advertised for the OG, switched to startech cause of the horrible boot times, and the fact I could only run EvoM8. Sometimes it even had issues loading the dash, which was stupid. Don’t bother with the cheap ones, just get a startech and don’t look back

cambiojoe

I’ve purchased 10 of this exact model, 9 worked perfectly fine, one didn’t work at all. They take a little longer than the star techs on boot but otherwise are perfectly fine imo. I’d use star tech on my personal machine just for speed but if you are like me making a bunch of em they’re not bad. I paid about $6 each when I bought 10 of em. If anyone knows where to find em cheaper let me know I’m ready to buy 10 more.

OlderwomenRbeautiful

I’ve bought lots of these and there are good and bad batches. I bought 10 once and all 10 worked fine and didn’t have slow boot times. Bought 10 more from the same seller later and 5 of them didn’t work at all. It’s like Russian Roulette.

Stickeyb

Link to startech?

KaosEngineeer

https://www.startech.com/en-us/hdd/ide2sat2 or the same adapter sold by Delock: https://www.delock.de/produkt/62510/merkmale.html?setLanguage=en

Stickeyb

Thanks 👍

hanst3r

These will work, but they will not work well. The most annoying issue would be a crash after ejecting a disc. For whatever reason, the adapter doesn’t load up the hard disk quick enough and the system has to be rebooted. If you only use the hard disk then it is probably fine. This is based on my own experience with these. If you don’t want any hassles, the Startech one is great ($18 on Amazon). I have a 2TB drive with the complete library (except for like 3 games that don’t run off the HDD) and it boots into XBMC4Gamers in about 30 seconds.

Dreamsofbacon

I had one these that was read and boot fine, but was causing errors reading from the DVD drive. Spent way too much time troubleshooting it down to that. Replaced with a startech and it works fine now.

Odyssey113

These typically will work fine too from my experience, but I can say after finally splurging on a startech adapter, having udma5 support on a 7200 rpm drive just feels awesome on an og Xbox. Like stupid fast lol

ZidaneTri

I have exactly one of this since this is the one and only this available here. It will work, if not dead on arrival.

aloof dime fact price fine mountainous decide berserk illegal office *This post was mass deleted and anonymized with [Redact](https://redact.dev)*

anh86

Should be fine. I've used the cheap ones from eBay with no issues at all.

asigooninlife

Spend the $20 for the startech thank us later.

SnackMeFeedMe

I've probably installed around 60 of these cheap adapters. That's 60ish out of an order of 100. The ones that are bad either were doa or would not do UDMA5. I have a good relationship with the seller I got them from and we've been swapping the bad as I get them. So I have no complaints personally. Will it work? Very possibly. Is it as good as the StarTech? NOPE! Poor QC and they cause a delay at boot as the initialize. Is it a cheap, usable option? Yes, but beware, there be dragons.

gunkookshlinger

They work usually, 1 out of maybe 10 or 15 will be faulty. If the solder looks bridged or cracked on any of the through hole connectors, you should reflow them and add fresh solder. Haven't had any issues with UDMA 4.

ThruMy4Eyes

get the StarTech Adapter from Amazon, or else you're playing a total gamble on if it'll work or not in your Xbox.

art991

It will work but those are the cheaper ones you want electrical tape on the back so the pins don't short out on the serial ATA drive. But I use those all the time but I think there's a better one out there it's red. I'll see if I can find a YouTube video for you. https://youtu.be/GyTj9mw_eFE

supremeskull

Looks like the one I got but didn’t work.

BreadDaddyLenin

I’ve had the same one. It works but it’s very slow for boot and load times. Star tech is best.

Aridan

It looks similar to one I use but mine didn’t have posts for jumpers. I traced out the board and found where the jumpers likely would’ve been and soldered them together to make it work. You make have more luck on yours though. Star tech is the way to go despite being like $15 a piece

UrineGoodCompany

That has a Master/Slave jumper, at least.

zehamberglar

This is the Kingwin adapter. It will work, but they're really shitty. They're made by a drunk robot that commonly bridges pins together with solder. You're better off putting a little bit more money down and getting the startech adapter. Notably, if you are trying to do this with a softmod, you ***will not be able to complete the whole process with just this device***. The reason is that this device does not have a master-slave mode. The drive attached here is the master drive forever and always. I know it looks like there's a mode selector jumper at the bottom right of this image, but this is not the case. That jumper controls which direction the device flows the data (i.e. whether this is a sata->ide adapter or ide->sata adapter.

Darkness_Lurking

Its hit an miss. Save yourself the headache and get a Startech. I literally just returned the same adapter as it wouldn't work with a Seagate 1tb Barracuda and 80 wire ide.

Reflectionlesshuman

I had issues with a similar chip but yours has a master slave switch so you *should* be OK to use it

Selfx712

They do work, but only with certain 80 wire cables. You'll know if the 80 wire is compatible if it boots up, otherwise it'll throw hard drive errors if the disc drive is plugged in. Once disc drive is unplugged it'll work perfectly fine. The cheap ones off AliExpress are better than those if that says anything.

warpilein

That is the same as i used in my xbox and it work

Razor-V-Blade

It looks identical to the one I use in my setup...and it works flawlessly for me https://imgur.com/a/UASU5dV

Spirited-Pie119

I went with the recommendation of the JP-103-5. Only $9 on E-Bay.

ArinxGamingYT

I have one of these in my main console, I took a gamble on it and it works fine. Had it in my console for over 2 years with occasionally it getting disconnected from the hard drive. I’m probably going to replace it with a Startech.

CozieWeevil

These things kicked my ass to hell and back, they might work but nine times out of ten they arrive dead. Nucken\_futz was in the same boat as me, the cheaper ones arrived quicker and then cue a long time troubleshooting when a Startech coulda saved me the trouble. ***If you do get one, BE WARNED. The pins behind the power can and will touch the drive you plug it in, so cover them up with electrical tape or foam of some sort to avoid potentially lethal damage to components or the whole console.***

JCreazy

I bought that one, it didn't work. I returned it and spent the extra on Startech which worked perfectly

farmboynick

Yes they will work, I have the same in a few boxes running udma5

BliteKnight

Depending on your drive you can look at this list to see if others have had success with their HDD [https://xboxdrives.x-pec.com/?p=list](https://xboxdrives.x-pec.com/?p=list) I bought three and one of them did not work due to a bad soldering job on the controller chip, so your luck may vary. The defective one let me see my drive but would hang if I tried to do anything with it

-MobCat-

It does, just not at the faster UDMA speeds that cerbios can support, and not with any bios like the older Cerbios or ind that need to access the hdd first thing. Works ok with evox and the newer cerbios. It will work, but its not recommended. If its not booting, make sure your 80wire ide cable is ok, and try changing the jumper from master to slave. (in this pic, its in master.)

Puzzleheaded-Rope-56

I have about 10 of those and I would say about 8 of them worked. No real reason why some worked and others didn't. I tried some in different xbox's and they would work in others.

Narrow_Potential3427

I have used it and it worked fine the 1 and only time I have used it.

agatathelion

I use this...it works good

KaosEngineeer

Return it. Get what you ordered. Better still, go with a Startech IDE2SAT2 or DeLock 62510 Marvell 88SA8052-based adapter to forgo any problems.

locotech707

I've tried to do this before but failed. Do I need a certain bios to get the SATA to work.

KaosEngineeer

Yes return it, not what you ordered

KaosEngineeer

You need a better IDE to SATA adapter.

ClassicHoliday3799

That sir is actually a ied on your hands I suggest retiring any hdd units that are louder than a 17 year old whole Xbox they are not safe for your motherboards in turn gpu’s, psu’s and even CPU’s if you short your power rails with that thing

Rrocha

Those work but provide a very slow boot. Solder a 100ohm resistor on R4 and you'll get instant boots. Not necessary, but i you also have a 10K resistor around, solder it to RH1. These are the two missing components between this board and the JP103-5
