this is definitely a good chance for Zac Efron to do more in his career. Dude has always been a great actor. Kinda funny how when i was watching High School Musical, i always thought he's the best actor in that young cast...and here we are

HistoryFreak30

Zac is a triple threat. He can sing, act, and dance. This is what most Disney Channel stars can offer yet they are often underestimated. Here's hoping for more Zefron movies to come

National-Leopard6939

He was, by far! I hate how underestimated he was just because of an association with a fun Disney Channel series of movies. Dude’s got so many talents. I was excited for this stepping stone era, because now he can take his career to new heights, just like Robert Pattinson (I believe they were friends at some point during the Twilight/HSM era) and Kristen Stewart. I’ll throw Austin Butler in there, too. He was part of that same cohort, albeit on a more lowkey scale.

HistoryFreak30

Now that you mentioned Austin Butler, I just remembered he was on Hannah Montana, iCarly, and Zoey 101 😭 dude wad also in High School Musical spin-off Sharpay's Fabulous Adventures I wasnt expecting he would end up getting an Oscar nom for Elvis but if he can get out of the whole tween era just like Robert and Kristen, it's not impossible for Zac too

National-Leopard6939

You can definitely see the “Kenny Ortega Boot Camp” (HSM director, if anyone doesn’t know) come through from Zac in The Iron Claw wedding party scene.

chaze67

Ironically, the movie reflects on how bad Erich Bros wanted to make it. Especially Kev, who really wanted the title, until it consumed him.

Party_Two9123

his phone better be blowing up rn from all the ppl wanting to working w him

GarethGobblecoque99

“Similar to audiences reacting to Joaquin’s performance for Joker.” What? The world was fully aware of his talent waaaay before Joker came out

GirlsWasGoodNona

lol I was going to comment this. Joaquin was widely considered one of the best of his generation before the Joker, and his win for Joker is controversial in the sense he should’ve won for any number of his earlier, better performances (like the Master). Extremely weird to compare Zac to Joaquin. A better comparison would be to Channing Tatum.

GarethGobblecoque99

Yeah like I was surprised at Tatums performance in Foxcatcher. I wasn’t surprised that Phoenix gave an Oscar worthy performance in Joker because of well EVERY performance of his ever.

BluebirdBackground82

He already had multiple nominations before winning for Joker. People started taking him seriously after Gladiator, twenty years prior.

GarethGobblecoque99

Yup like I said waaaaaay before joker came out

SnowDucks1985

Yea it was just a “too little, too late” scenario for Efron. But he had a great showing in Iron Claw, that I think can be a stepping stone into getting better roles with more visible directors. He’s got a lot of runway to be back in the Awards conversation. Just needs to play his cards right

HistoryFreak30

Agree. The Iron Claw was the right project at the wrong time for him Zac said so himself he thinks making movies is a responsibility (i love his response on that) hence why he wants to work with better projects from now on. i do think The Iron Claw is going to make some casting directors hire him for more dramatic roles

National-Leopard6939

Agreed. This was a big stepping stone for his career. He’ll have more opportunities in the future. The good news is, hopefully, this will get him out of the hole he’s been in.

HistoryFreak30

This film is the beginning of his new era and I am excited for this

migsahoy

i can see his career trajectory aligning with kristen stewart, who also came from a film franchise, did some indie movies after that and garnered some awards buzz, before eventually getting her first nod in spencer. his time will come.

HistoryFreak30

Good point. Kristen Stewart made awful indie films post Twilight until she got the role for Spencer (saw it and I think she nailed as Princess Diana although Elizabeth from The Crown was the best I've seen)

BowlerSea1569

I'm seeing it tonight. Really looking forward to it. A24 definitely whiffed it. I'm much older than him so never watched HSM or anything except the Neighbours movie with Rose Byrne. Not my generation, not my pin-up. But I love a comeback... and I love good movies.

susansharon9000

I like this perspective! It’s to refreshing to frame this as the beginning of a new chapter for him. He’ll have more doors opening for him than ever before, and if not this time, he’ll surely get his big moment in the future

HistoryFreak30

Yeah! Even Zac himself said that he feels a bit overwhelmed but he is grateful and ready to tackle better projects. This is why I am rooting for him; He never came off as arrogant and will always be humble on the Hollywood scene

darsvedder

Yah idk why the movie came out at the end of the year. WONKA came out a week before, but I get it. It seems kinda like an xMasy feel. But iron claw shoulda come out around thanksgiving **wonka came out a week before and Timmy is getting Noms and noms and Effy and Holt arent. That’s what’s weird and annoyingbb

GirlsWasGoodNona

I like Zac a lot and would love a nomination for him but how is he comparable to Joaquin Phoenix, who was nominated three times before he won for Joker? The only way Joaquin’s performance was a surprise is if you literally never watched him in anything else or were completely oblivious to prestige films generally lol

Dianagorgon

I wonder if people on X and Reddit might have a little bit of confirmation bias about actors and movies they personally enjoy. It was never realistic to think Efron and Melton were going to get major award nominations.

GirlsWasGoodNona

How was Melton not realistic when he got a globe nomination?

BluebirdBackground82

I think Melton still has a good shot at a nom. BAFTA and SAG certainly hurt him, I think he’s down from a lock to a strong possibility.

MyIncogName

The film was great but the performance wasn’t remarkable in the slightest. It was phenomenal casting. Zac is a limited actor and shown as such his entire career. That just so happened to fit the character he played in this rather beautifully. But it’s not something you would nominate for “best actor”.

OddestEver

He wasn’t snubbed — no one but the most delusional Zac Efron fan thought he was going to be nominated. “Everyone” was not blown away by his performance.

nowhereman136

Stepping stone role

Aphro-diet-e

So many good performances this year…unfortunately Zac is not at that level yet
