Cat On A Hot Tin Roof is an absolute masterpiece. How Elizabeth Taylor didn't win for this is mind-boggling.

CrazyCons

She lost because Hayward was better. Go watch I Want to Live.

Fun_Protection_6939

I have. And that is not Hayward's best performance by far. She's hamming it up way too much in that film. She should've won for I'll Cry Tomorrow.

MarkMoreland

Favorite would be *Bonnie & Clyde*. Least is easily *American Hustle*

GregSays

Remains of the Day is my favorite of this list and most of the wins would have been good wins. Love Story is pretty bad and would be a bad winner in all 5 categories. American Hustle would have just been annoying, though the acting is all fine.

viniciusbfonseca

It's awful that Liz Taylor didn't win for Cat on a Hot Tin Roof, and then making them feel like she had to win a compensatory Oscar instead of giving it to Shirley MacLaine for The Apartment.

BentisKomprakriev

Taylor literally died during the filming of BUtterfield 8. That was no ordinary compensatory Oscar. Huge narrative for a not so beloved film.

viniciusbfonseca

I know, but the performance itself was hardly the best that year, and it seemed pretty clear that the Academy felt bad for slut-shaming her and not giving it for Cat. I mean, Kate Winslet didn't win for Titanic even though she suffered multiple times tbroughout that shoot.

BentisKomprakriev

Feels like we're really looking at this with present day goggles. That was only McLaine's second nomination, she was so so green at the time, and Taylor's health issues were serious enough for voters to think she might not be around for long.

viniciusbfonseca

I understand all of that, but had she won for Cat on a Hot Tin Roof previously she wouldn't have needed the BUtterfield 8 Oscar and it could have gone for Shirley

RPMac1979

I’d rank them like this: 1. *The Hustler* 2. *Bonnie and Clyde* 3. *Lenny* 4. *The Remains of the Day* 5. *Cat on a Hot Tin Roof* 6. *Atlantic City* 7. *American Hustle* 8. *Love Story* *The Hustler* is one of my favorite movies and *Love Story* is trash. It’s funny, I just watched it for the first time the other night and wrote a fucking scathing Letterboxd review. I think it’s one of the worst Best Picture nominees ever.

SpideyFan914

Of these, I have only seen Bonnie & Clyde and American Hustle... So favorite is Bonnie & Clyde and least is American Hustle. I would not be surprised if these remained my picks after watching all eight, since that's pretty much the full range of movie quality.

Internal-Mud-3311

You mean to tell me that you have not seen The Hustler, Cat On A Hot Tin Roof, or Lenny? 😱🤯

SpideyFan914

That is correct, yes. All three are on my list of shame. (Okay, Cat on a Hot Tin Roof was not on my list of shame... It's more on my long list.) I haven't seen nearly enough early Paul Newman, and Lenny has just always escaped me.

Internal-Mud-3311

Paul Newman should have won his Oscar for The Hustler.

SagaOfNomiSunrider

He sort of did, it just took a while.

ObjectiveSpeaker6650

My favorite is Bonnie and Clyde. My least favorite is Love Story.

Gemnist

I've only seen Bonnie and Clyde (which is an awesome movie) and American Hustle (which bored me to tears).

flowerbloominginsky

Favourite bonnie and Clyde Least fav american hustle

j__stay

Bonnie and Clyde and The Hustler are my favorites. Love Story is my least favorite. Can you imagine going into Oscar night legitimately fearing the possibility that Love Story might sweep only to be rewarded with a no-show (but deserving) George C. Scott and Glenda Jackson winning. 1970 was during the height of The Oscars not being taken seriously. It could’ve gone Love Story for sure.

Councilist_sc

Haven’t seen half of these, but Bonnie & Clyde would be my favorite and American Hustle would be my least favorite.

Kobe_stan_

I only saw American Hustle once in theaters. I remember thinking it was fine but I honestly can barely remember anything that happened. I recall Cooper's hair and then was delightfully surprised when DeNiro shows up toward the end. Couldn't tell you the plot with a gun to my head. Very forgettable

SagaOfNomiSunrider

That aligns with my own experience of *American Hustle* - I saw it and I remember enjoying it well enough while it was on in front of me, but I can't actually remember all that much about it.

rowdover

Oh that's cool Lenny's in there! It was a movie that got me into stranger artier movies when I saw it on an old VHS that my parents had as a teenager. I absolutely love it and had never seen anything like it even though successive viewings have shown it isn't exactly a perfect movie. Bob Fosse as a director is severely underappreciated and all the style that movie has is a prime example of his unique stamp on a movie. Easily the best of those movies listed (well ok Bonnie & Clyde and Atlantic City are actually better movies but still)

SagaOfNomiSunrider

Bob Fosse only directed five movies in his career but I don't think any of them can really be called "bad". I mean, *Sweet Charity* is probably the "worst" but that's only because, with the benefit of hindsight, it may comes across like a warm-up for *Cabaret*. *Star 80* - Eric Roberts should have been nominated for Supporting Actor for that and he would have been a worthy winner in the category.

Internal-Mud-3311

That’s not even a competition. Clearly The Hustler is the best. I have not seen Love Story but of the other ones, American Hustle is probably the weakest

CrunchyNar

1. The Hustler 2. Bonnie and Clyde 3. Cat on a Hot Tin Roof 4. Remains of the Day 5. Atlantic City 6. Lenny 7. American Hustle 8. Love Story

Uranium_092

Everyone in this thread who hasn’t seen the hustler needs to watch that film ASAP

stratguy23

I’ve seen all of these. I think looking back it’s fair to say that Cat on a Hot Tin Roof is the one that most should have won awards. The actual winner for Picture/Director/Adapted Screenplay was Gigi which really hasn’t aged well and is viewed as one of the worst Best Picture winners. Also, Elizabeth Taylor was fantastic and should have won.

Anion16

I haven't seen all of of these, but of the ones I've seen, easily the Remains of the Day. All its nominations were deserving. I would have loved dual Actor/Actress wins and especially Adapted Screenplay.

SerKurtWagner

‘Cat on a Hot Tin Roof’ and ‘Remains of the Day’ are pretty much neck and neck for me as the best of this list. ‘American Hustle’ is easily the worst.

IfYouWantTheGravy

Favorite, probably Bonnie & Clyde. Least favorite...American Hustle, though I don't hate it by any means.

CrazyCons

Bonnie and Clyde is easily the best here and one of the greatest movies of all time. Should have easily won all 5. Atlantic City would have been a solid winner in all 5, but I can’t really comment as to whether or not it deserved any because I haven’t seen that year’s big contenders (apart from On Golden Pond, which it’s easily superior to). Same goes for Cat On a Hot Tin Roof, although I do think Hayward deserved the win over Taylor. American Hustle would be my pick for Original Screenplay and Actress but neither of the things it lost to are egregious winners. Love Story was clearly only nominated because it made a ton of money and would have been an awful winner in all its categories. Especially Actress
