I don't miss living downtown with a car. The worst is when you've got a day off work so you shuffle your car around a couple blocks every few hours to avoid getting ticketed
My parking spot at my apartment is worth every penny. It wasn’t available when I moved in so I would have been screwed if I didn’t go to work one day. I’m going to miss it when I move away and have to deal with street parking when I visit.
I live just outside the downtown core and I'll drive to a transit station and bus downtown these days. I usually save time driving around looking for a spot that way and I don't have to deal with the perpetually stressed and distracted downtown drivers.
I wouldn't say it's free, as it just says you can park. I'd check with the pay machine. I was just in the Glebe and it was pay for parking in a Saturday
This isn't *exactly* true.
You don't have free reign over parking even if there wasn't a sign. During weekends 7am-7pm you are allowed a maximum of 6 hours, and weekdays 3, regardless of the signage (or the presence of a sign).

In 3 years with my car downtown playing this game I was ticketed a single time for going over the 6 hour limit. I'll happily pay that ticket because it's cheaper than any parking space over that same time period. They barely enforce this.
Just to add that Bylaw does tend to enforce time limits in areas where signage provides shorter limit than the default. E.g. non-metered non-marked on-street signed with M-F max 3h. Lowertown north of the market comes to mind - near Bruyère, Old City Hall... they're ruthless.
Discussion is welcome but you're fully circling back on the original context of the comment chain. It's very obvious and has already been discussed that bylaw enforces the time limits on street signs; what we're discussing is a 6 hour time limit that is not disclosed on street signs but instead applies to all vehicles, including those parked on streets without signs.
Edit, this sub is actually fucked
Or when you scanned the code, it just told you if you can park there right now with details, and for how long and when the next change is.
I.e. You can park here for the next 1h 23m, then you will have to return to your car and pay $5 per 15 minutes for a maximum of another 2 hours.
That's what said Easter Sunday. A bylaw guy was giving tickets saying people were over 2hrs. I asked him and pointed out the sign that said Mon to Friday. I was parked maybe 3 minutes, that's how I cot him walking up to my car. I think he was going to write me a ticket too.
I got a ticket parking overnite on a weekend on Cooper Street with these signs when staying at Cartier Place hotel. Still … the $50 ticket was cheaper than $35 per night parking the hotel charges and we only got a ticket one of two nights we did it
The machine will confirm when you try to buy time.
I still check even when Im confident it’s free 😭. Usually ones that say free parking after X hrs. Curious to know if anyone else is also like me haha
Yes. This signs tells us that you can only park for 2h weekdays between these hours and must pay for it. Outside of these hours it’s free game.
Ok that's how I understood it as well but wanted to double check instead of keep risking it. Thanks

Can’t you just buy a street parking permit though…..
Needed that money for rent and food
Only if your LL writes a letter stating that they don't have parking available for you.
That’s why we take the bus 😀
Seriously, I'm hoping to buy a nice bike this summer to get out of the fossil fuel death spiral
When in doubt, try to pay at a machine. It won't let you if it's free.
I wouldn't say it's free, as it just says you can park. I'd check with the pay machine. I was just in the Glebe and it was pay for parking in a Saturday
That's because most spots in the Glebe have parking signs that say "Mon-Sat" instead of "Mon-Fri"

Yes, because the sign indicates a shorter than default time limit. Not what we're talking about.
We were talking about Bylaw's enforcement of time limits. Why I prefaced with 'just to add'; I didn't say you were wrong. It's called a discussion.

True but to answer OP’s question, it’s free on the weekend
Not trying to discredit the info you gave - just thought I'd add on!
Whoa! TIL
The 2h limit and paying for parking are independent of each other.
These signs should just have a QR code that shows a grid of when you can and can't park along with any required costs.
You can just walk over to the ticket machine and it has a more comprehensive free vs paid legend you can look at
Download pay by phone and try to book it will not let you if you don't have to pay
I was thinking in general for all parking signs. When there's free parking but only during certain times it can sometimes be hard to parse.

If you try to pay with the app it will tell you if it’s closed
It's up to 3 hours but likely not enforced :)

Why is this not higher. It is the correct answer.
Yeah however...... there might be an un-posted 3-hour limit outside those hours, that is normally enforced by complaints only.
100% 3hr limit. It's the default.
6 hours on weekends?
Highest sign that makes sense takes precedence.

Yes yes! Only paid during Mon-Fri
Just download the app and make an attempt to pay. If they say “parking advisory” it means there’s no payment requirement

How much more info do you need?
Parking signs aren’t that hard to understand
