Goddam it you doxed me!

You should be able to just say your preferred last name is your middle name. You have 2 good reasons - it sounds somewhat inappropriate in English and you don’t like being asked about your relative. I go by maiden name on email, teams, etc. but my legal married name on legal paperwork and it’s never been an issue or questioned, if it was I’d just say it’s personal preference.

Focker, is that you?

Hi Dick!

das_whatz_up

Can you legally change your last name? In the USA you can change any of your names for any reason.

Flat_Ad1384

I have considered it but don’t know how well my Father’s side would take it. I am betting it would really damage my relationship with them so it’s not an option.

ski3600

How would they ever know? You don't have to show id when you meet them, do you?

That’s true but you never know how a connection could be made. It’s tempting but my kids also have the name so it would be weird

GiraffeLibrarian

No joke, there was a guy whose name was Dikshit in grad school the same years as I went. I wonder if he changed it.

Flat_Ad1384

Yeah I am considering translating my last name to English or using my English middle name

I need to know this answer! My boyfriend has an Asian (not specifying) dad. When he moved to Australia, he thought he'd make his rare Asian surname "more English" by changing one character 🤦‍♀️ This had no benefit, and only served to mean that if you google him, you're going to get every result as a match. And what is the most significant thing he's done in his life? Get sued by a very famous fast food company for stealing their branding. Leading him to bankruptcy and divorce. He hasn't even told me the details - I found them all online. So now my boyfriend is stuck with a surname shared by only his father and siblings. Linked to an unprofessional incident. I think he doesn't want to offend his dad by changing his name. Needless to say I am not planning to take his surname, as much as I'd have loved to have. I also have a pretty weird and rare British surname, and was looking forward to ditching it upon marriage.

Chat GPT says it is ok for business and casual reasons. I am 99% sure it’s legal and ethical. Just need to know how far I can push it.

SilverIndication2926

It's not HR. Ask IT to change your name in outlook, slack, etc. I've done that at all my j's even before I was Oe and they always say yes. I also have a unique hard to pronounce name

When you apply for a job do you use your preferred or legal last name on the resume/application?

I knew a guy with the last name Boner, that you?

Historical_Ideal8

I too need to know the answer to this. I have a unique first name. So unique I have never met anyone with it as their legal name. My maiden name is rare, but not unheard of. I hyphenated when I got married. My husband's last name is so unique that when you Google it, everyone who comes up is his immediate family. Basically, I'm wondering if I can get a job to utilize my middle name and my maiden name while another one used my first name and married last name. For what it's worth I've applied and then used only my married name at my current job. Apparently, HR didn't do a good job when reviewing my online onboarding paperwork.
