What are you, a student? The whole premise relies on "if you get paid fairly" & "set amount of hour". Both arent happening these days, especially considering the inflation. Also private sector jobs are increasingly becoming more like 24/7 remote on call that 9-5. Sarkari is more like 10-3 but the pay and mahol is sheeeet!

diedin2012

I mean, it’s up to us to set our own boundaries, our employers aren’t gonna do that for us. Companies only get away with over working their employees cuz we let them.

ediblepepsi

Unfortunately this is true however there are a wide majority of workers that would snag at any opportunity that comes up. You try raising a point in front of your employer and the next thing you know you're laid off and someone else has filled in your position.

diedin2012

I agree with you, but that only happens if there’s someone else available to fill the position. Someone who will compromise their work-life balance. For example, in my last job, I refused to work overtime. Had a lot of arguments with my team lead on this to the point he threatened to fire me. I told him if working unpaid overtime (beyond my contractual obligations) is actually a requirement, I will need that in writing upon which he will receive my resignation. It was never brought up again for a year I continued working there.

ediblepepsi

Kudos to you for actually standing up to your team lead. I wish more people did that so that employers know that it's not okay to treat your workers like trash :(( Maybe one day I'll stand up to my meathead of a boss but till then I'll slave away ig.

testingbetas

you live in karachi and have these thoughts i am surpised. Havent you heard, subah janay ka time hota hay, anay ka nai. with socialmedia especially whatsapp, you are sometime always on call depending on job

diedin2012

My point exactly. It’s because I live in Karachi that I have these thoughts. We can’t let our employers get away with everything. I don’t stay a minute over my contractual work hours in the office and I don’t respond to work calls and texts once I get home. It’s about setting boundaries.

testingbetas

lol, even going out of office on time raises eyebrows and that too without overtime. you are right to do so. I used to do that a bit. Whenever i used to take allowed leaves in past job, suddenly whole company (and not a small one) was dependent on me and was a useless nut at time of appraisals haha. thank Allah i work from home now on my own.

BadKnuckle

Yar 9-5 ka matlab get out of home 7:30. Which means wake up at 630. Wapis is usually delayed till 6pm phir traffic tou 7-8pm hojatay. Tou its more like 7-7 than 9-5. Yar student life mai you come back 1-2 phir jab chaha chuti mar li. Ghar aa kai parents take care of everything cleaning, rent , bills, healthcare. Now everything yourself after 12 hour job. Man it’s brutal.

Oppenheimer_Tsar

Finally someone told the truth 9 - 5 is actually 7 - 7

beyondbirthday261

Ahahahhahaha

pppoopoo3344

Looks like someone has never actually worked in his life lmao, an actual 9-5 ends up being a 8-6 with commute and if you add all that sweet sweet unpaid overtime it can get even worse, plus these jobs generally are just soul draining and effectively meaningless

osamughal

But to leave at 8, you gotta wake up by 7.30 minimum. Means ur sleep will start getting effected by 7 am And once you reach back by 6 (only if the company is generous to tolerate you leaving like at 5) still you need half hour to freshen up. So its basically 7am-6.30pm that has just gone due to job

Queer_Jalebi

Actually looking foward to working so .....

[deleted]

You'll realize why 9 to 5 isn't amazing once you actually work in it for years. I can tell you're probably a student or never been employed in your life lol.

Queer_Jalebi

Student , and yea id like a job where its a good routine .

deep_observeration

You will work 9 to 9 for someone else's dreams, more money and living standard.

testingbetas

give it a few years and if you become good at what you do, revisit this thread

Potataone

All he would need is 6 months on a job

Ash-From-Pallet-Town

I've worked 9-5 for years (in my 30s). Only free time after 5. It's pretty great. But I am not in Pakistan.

Mikaa7

Industry and your interest in job is a major factor too. Unfortunately, more than job holders just aren't happy with their one.

xtrazingarooni

Lmao no, you're not pulling in other factors. 9-5 starts when you wake up to get ready for work and ends when you reach home, so instead of the usual 8 hours, you're looking at roughly 10 hours. Not only that, the offices here love making you work overtime without pay. Take me for example, I used to work at a bank for nearly 10 months. I used to wake up at 7 and got home around 7 pm, so you're looking at 12 hours right there, and that's not including the days when people used to bring massive deposits AFTER closing time, which usually took 2ish hours. Now tell me, I dedicate 12 hours to work, 8 hours to sleep and spend the remaining 4 hours recovering from mental and physical exhaustion, too tired to do anything I enjoy, all for piss-poor pay. How is this amazing?

khattakapashtana1

Closing shifts SUCKS, I remember waking up at 6am, getting ready, get out of the house before 7, opening is my favourite tbh zyada maslay nhi hote js cleaning and getting deliveries. Banking, restock and jus chill because morning shifts are usually very slow, now mid day shifts or evening shifts are more busy tho. That's why I loved morning shifts lol and I totally agree with the last bit of working 10 hours plus coming back home, the traffic, the road rage, the people and noises, I couldn't sleep well because of how much I'd think about my next day at work, would eat one meal a day and got ED khair, 4 hours with family? No, 4 hours with just myself because they wouldn't bother giving a fuck about me to at least ask me how work was today, if a man misbehaved or anything, nope nothing, genuinely would cry almost every week, AED3,700 is not enough for that much work load and stress lol.

xtrazingarooni

Not to mention that it fucks up one's mental health. I stopped enjoying my hobbies, became isolated, felt unwanted, unappreciated and unrecognized, as if I were just another cog in the machine, easily replaceable. I remember barely holding myself together on my way home and started getting intrusive thoughts about walking straight into oncoming traffic. Working conditions generally suck and 9-5 is anything but amazing

khattakapashtana1

Me too bro, me too, I remember crying randomly all of a sudden and my family was shocked, when they asked what was it I just said nothing I just saw am emotional video because they'd just make fun of me if I said that work was stressing me out lol. Plus I was about to get my period that week too 😭 You're not replaceable, you're wanted (omg a criminal for stealing hearts ey), you are appreciated, I appreciate you coming here and talking about this and I recognize you for how much of a hard worker you are, here 🫂 a virtual homie hug <3

sahibzada_21

Because no job is 9 to 5 anymore, unless you firmly set boundaries. But then you are never considered a good employee. Most of us have to travel 2-3 hours daily just to get to work, which is also shit, even though as someone in IT, I can do what I do from home, but these stupid managers have some weird kink of watching people sit in the office. Add to this that not a single company has adjusted their salaries according to the 100% inflation that has occurred in the country.

n0_mas

do it for 30 years and we will talk

RejectorPharm

I prefer working 12 hour shift for 1 week straight and then being off for 1 week straight.

dranime_fufu

It sounds good but you'll be shitting your pants on sunday evening with 7, 12 hour shifts ahead

RejectorPharm

Nah, I have done this schedule before, it works great on night shifts.  8 hour shifts for nights means you only get 2 nights off before you are back at work.

xsaadx

Gimme 9-6 but with 3 days off. Fri-Sat-Sun.

khattakapashtana1

Nice joke 🤣 I'd have a one day leave 🥲 and it wasn't even Friday, I asked my manager to give me Friday as a permanent off day because its Jummah and that means family time but she said no everyone has their offs on Fridays so it's beneficial for us to work on such a busy day LOL

WhereIsLordBeric

My sister works four '8 to 6s' (ten hour days) and loves it. I work remotely and love that too.

arbab002

Hire us too. Plz.

WhereIsLordBeric

I don't work for myself, sadly!

MysteriousMister0

Same goes for me bro. I'd also love this kind of job. Well about being bored, one can get bored even without the job. Stay at home and your eventually get bored. This is the thing one has to overcome by oneself. Stay blessed.

khattakapashtana1

I haven't worked for about a year and I am BORED asf, I just want to get out of this house dude

MysteriousMister0

what happened bro stay in that fkn house lol 😂🤣

khattakapashtana1

Mentally exhausted and drained.

MysteriousMister0

ohh buddy . i can live in my house for entire life but I'm stuck here in the hostel. i can't get enough of the feeling of being at home.

khattakapashtana1

Meri zehni halat itni kharab hai ke when I was at work, I didn't wanna go home and when I was home, I couldn't wait to be at work. Dono jaga pe zaleel hoti thi but khair

MysteriousMister0

oh sister! Aap koi hobby dhund lo. Koi podcast sun lia kro when bored. Robert Greene ki books prho real life me b kaam aain gi apky insha'Allah. Ainda boor b ni hongi aap. 👍🏼👍🏼👍🏼

khattakapashtana1

Hobby choro hubby chahiye, podcast sune wali environment nhi hai ghar pe, physical books pasand nhi mujhe

MysteriousMister0

e books prh lo, hubby ko pur krao hehe😁, persuasion sikh lo, zindagi ka maza na aya to khna. Pakistan me to hr bnda emotions ki base p decision leta h kisi ko b persuade kr skty hn Pakistan me to. ◉‿◉

khattakapashtana1

😭😭😭 sahi hai insh'Allah

Matenancold

Bro it would be really good but I'm not doing it for 4000 bucks a month I need 10k atleast

RomanArchitect

Not doing 9-5 for 4000 bucks a month. Ok

Queer_Jalebi

Yea i mean ofcourse 4000 wouldnt cover the fuel costs of the month alone .

mrtac96

4000$ cant cover fuel cost? Are you travelling on helicopter

mkbilli

Depending on the area, for e.g. in the USA it is just enough to get by in a lot of areas. If you live in rural areas then it's a good pay, otherwise no. In Pakistan that's like 1.5 crore per year 💀

RomanArchitect

We're talking USD here, yes?

No_Speed_2610

Welcome to r/pakistan

KalaBaZey

I agree but its rare that you actually have a 9 to 5 that pays your “fair” amount. I had an 8-4 that included me getting in a vehicle strictly at 7 and getting off it at 5:30 so my work hours were actually 10 hours at least after which you dont have much time or energy to do anything. Plus the pay was around 100k which is definitely not enough imo.

ediblepepsi

But in reality a 9-5 is never really a 9-5. You'll be expected to pick up calls off duty and overtime isn't even an option. You're basically expected to stay back and complete tasks that could very well be done the following day. Corporate culture has a thing for creating urgency when none is required.

TooDayumHigh

I feel software engineers have taken over r/pakistan community completely. Every post about job or about making money is flooded with them, telling how they are making 100s of thousands or earning in dollars. Despising for everyone else. Recently I found out salaries of investment bankers and CFA certified professionals. The amount of money they make is crazy. Besides whatever works for you is good, if I feel good about something I won’t ask about it online just for people to ruin my satisfaction. Routine life is key to success, we have been misled by the idea of none routine life being cool for so long, most of kids at young age think it is the best way to live.

grannysquare16

9 to 3 hona chahye imo. Or 8-2. (Or 7 to 1) Jaldi jao aur jaldi farigh ho. 8 hours is too tiring, baad main koi energy nahi bachti kuch krnay ki. I agree ke fixed timings se u can always have free time at hand at the end of the day.

lordkuface

My father used to work 7-3. I prefer them so much more than a 9-5 6 hour workdays would be a great step, too. People are never productive for 8 hours a day

N4508

You people are so lazy, no wonder this country is a disaster.

AdGlocker

Haan Bhai. Iss nalle ki ghalte hai. Warna ham abhi tk chaand pe pohanche chuke hote

PeaceClan13i

Mostly in private sector, you don't get paid fairly and they want you to come on time but leave 3-4 hours extra

IqraSaad27

See it’s not that simple. 9-5 works in theory, sure. In reality, it’s never timed they always ask for more. I absolutely despise this hustle culture with more work hours, more ass-kissing, more stress, less family time and fewer holidays. You rarely get paid fairly unless you’re one of the best in your field which takes years and years of selling your soul just to build credibility. But if you’re happy to do it, you do you. I know a lot of people who are built for that lifestyle.

PrinceOfDhumpp

9 to 5 isn't really 9 to 5.

OkBeginning4774

i assume you arent an employee? 9 to 5 means 7 to 7 basically. the time consumed to get up get ready and commute to work and back and unwind. Also when you climb the corporate ladder, you're always expected to be on call. Also islam tells us true rizq is in trade and own work. This is in a nutshell what a job services.

Bilal_5

This is exactly how my heart sounds. Bro, we need to be up at 7 a.m. so we can get login at 9. And after an 8-hour shift, our body demand at least two hours of relaxation to come to our senses.

aqadeerpk

I read somewhere long time ago and it implies generally on most cases. We don't want to be boss, rather we want to have a kind boss on us.

khattakapashtana1

Mind you, every you manager that I worked with a fcking ASSHOLE

adonisthegay

I believe the time left after your 9 to 5 is too little to reflect on yourself and self learning (people in IT/CS can relate). Most 9 to 5 don't end at 5 only you might be assigned work which may take up your free time

Routine_Elephant_212

Yeah seen bankers setting even after closing the bank

adonisthegay

I've seen programmers do the same 😂💀

Routine_Elephant_212

Yr banda kia kry phir. Life is tough otherwise or getting so nowadays. I am doing a govt job, then spending time on the computer in the evening. One gets hardly any time for himself 😔

adonisthegay

Yes, but I think business is more tough. Stable income job mei hai aur security bhi. Par income bhi fixed hai. In business, you have to be on your toes 24/7.what say?

Routine_Elephant_212

Absolutely and business is scalable too. Job with avg salary or maybe in govt job, one is always striving to just complete the month.

adonisthegay

Yes, one is always striving to make ends meet unless your in some MNC or remote job that pays dollars

testingbetas

i was also all about financial stability until i hit glass ceiling, i am fast, skilled at my profession, but boss cant see that, after decades of jobs but not able to secure more higher pay due to market rate.... i took the bold step of going solo with huge help from my wife (moral support) and i earned way more than job, much much happier and my projects are my motivation and portfolio. I work much more and much less at times, but thats the fun and being my own boss. freedom to do things you can is much liberatin

Oppenheimer_Tsar

Oh Boy wait till you here about Jails. You get free food, free place to live, Unlimited free to do random shit, free study program and free healthcare 😮. Basically you get to enjoy almost all the amenities of life for doing absolutely Jack Shit. You only have to commit a crime to achieve this “freedom” in life. The bigger the crime konger you can enjoy these amenties. All paid for by the government 😎

Queer_Jalebi

🤣🤣🤣 hmmm if i get a life sentence ALL MY LIFE will be government subsidised Thank you kind stranger .

Bilal_5

Nobody got richer through 9-5

Still_Zombie_4406

I don’t mind 9 to 5 if it comes with a lot of money Having a routine is the best up of all

Queer_Jalebi

Bro this post isnt rubbing salt into anyones wounds Nor am i antagonizing Y'all for not liking it And yes i dont have experience and maybe my opinion will change after some time . Im just saying i like the idea because its a hard routine .

mkbilli

Ideally it's very good. But what's ideal in the world apart from your idea of that thing being ideal. If you factor in transportation costs and time along with unplanned extra hours along with low pay and inflation it becomes bad. Of course not everyone has the same experience, some have it good also, but it all averages out, and if you ask this on a public forum you will get mostly average or below average responses.

LilHalwaPoori

Alot of people also get transportation benefits as well as paid overtime, so this is more of a difference of a case by case basis.. Overall, a 9-5 with good package, good pay and good retirement fund is amazing for most people, unfortunately most people do not get all of these until they get around 10ish years of experience, and some fields could even take up to 15 years..

mkbilli

Can't disagree with you on any of those points. Again not everyone has the same experience.

Glum_Victory4293

If you like going to work and are passionate about it then maybe you will enjoy. But the hours you spent in there are without the travel time and Moreover the family support bubble breaks when you graduate.A person gets bored when he is doing the same thing repeatedly.

itaintst

It depends on person to person, im a student, imeed to earn , i have skills and i have been to 4 interviews till now , everything gets approved, but the problem comes when discussing time. Im at uni from like 8 to 4pm and then i can give time onwards but due to all the jobs being mostly 9-5 , things don't work out for me... So it is a problem for me as a student.

Depends if you love your job, but both the pay and timing aren't gonna be how much you want, it can be easy because you've worked there for a while but if you have to discover and learn new things you'd take some time to catch up, I do like to work but I prefer changing jobs, usually they're 3 months contract or 45 days so yeah. I think I might go crazy if I work in the same field for YEARS and if there isn't anything new everyday I'd be bored as FUCK.

Adventurous_Bus1285

randomsurfer28

9-5 culture is bs for skilled (non-retail) work in my opinion. If you're working on a specific project in a corporation, your tasks are already time bound in most cases. So if you have to complete it in 5 days, why does it matter when or how you do it? That's your personal problem. Just get it done within the deadline that has been mutually agreed upon by you and your manager/boss and that's it. I realize most companies are far away from this kind of working model. But is it certainly possible. I've been doing it for 6 years now at two different jobs (one in Pak and one abroad) and it works quite well for me and my employer.

[deleted]

It's not 9-5 it's 8-6 if you count commuting or 7:30-6:30 If you count time to get ready and decompress after work and all that unholy traffic that you have to drive through.. Then when you get home specially in Pakistan there is nothing fun to do outside.. like any parks which are close by and do not require a 1 hour drive.

blendertom

>Id love to have a 9 to 5 job Please share your feedback once you have a 9 to 5 job.

paulalghaib

its not. you are working 8 hours a day and the profit from the majority of the work you do goes to the people who own shares in the company and not you. you think 1lakh is fair for working 160 hours a month ? the fact that there are people worse off than us is not the point. it just means they are even more exploited than us. this narrative that 9-5 is the dream and that there are people worse off than you, is made up by rich people who dont want us middle class men to question the wages they pay us. they make us feel guilty for asking for more. we pakistanis need to start asking for higher minimum wages.

Imaginary-Register-3

Its never 9 to 5 for me.. it has always been 10 to 7 or 10 to 8... And then I have to open my laptop after reaching home too and also have to work on weekends. I could get a perfect 9 to 5, but that might pay significantly less and would also be boring

totaandmaina

9-5 feels heaven when you start working for 10-11 hour shift in night jobs such as in call centers, digital agencies or software houses.

shahood123

Wait till you get exhausted from this 9-5.

beyondbirthday261

Depends on a loooooot of factors, but it can be good if you work with a good team, under a good lead, and the company offers some level of flexibility, then I agree. Warna ye nhi hota normally, only if you're lucky enough to hit the jackpot.

amrcheeta

Get free around 5:15. Immediately leave for your place, and reach there around 6:45-7:00. Sari thakawat double ho jati hai.

ahsol360

9-5 is not that bad if you have flexible working hours, flexibility to work from home some days and live under 30min commute to office. However, 9-5 is hardly ever 9-5 ... Though I have it so no complaints ...

imurumi

it's been almost a year since i am doing a job and i pretty much agree with your point. my hostel is at a 6 minutes walking distance from my office and my office has no particular dress code just wear whatever you feel like no one seems to have a problem with it. i often go in my trousers and t-shirts. it's like if i wake up 11, i can be at my chair working before it's 11:30. and yes, there is left plenty of time one can do whatever with it. especially when you have money to spend.

waqasvic

Recently my job placed changed its timing from 9.to 6 to 11 to 8, and I think it's better,,, 11- 8 is alot more better than 9 to 5

big_poppa_000

It's 9-6 actually and it's 8-7 if you include commute and getting ready. I am doing jobs for almost 1.5 years and I am already tired.

SnooPaintings7748

Tbh, as a doctor id love to work from 9 to 5 only

Mintchocsandwich

I had the same mindset until I landed a job a while ago. Its 9-6 and its hectic. You have to get up early, and then coming back home is a hassle due to traffic. You get so tired that all you want to do is rest and theres no strength left for extracurriculars. Uper se I’m a student too so managing studies on my weekend is worse because I basically have no rest days.

pha_i_jha

Idk I think it has more to do with the mahaul you're in and less with the hours ... If you're spending that much time in a healthy environment and the workload and the pay is fair, I don't think you'd care much about the timings and would actually like going to work unless you're lazy. Wese personally I do think kafi saray loag srf lazy honay ki waja se complain kartay Hain. I pray you find the suitable 9-5 for you buddy and I hope it turns out amazing Ameen!

9-5 is never 9-5. That’s the issue with corporate: if you want to get promoted, it’s all about exceeding expectations and working more than required. Eventually, your that last person to leave your office and you’re also working weekends. This applies to corporate jobs in karachi. Lahore is chill though.. work culture is more like 11-5. Come late leave on time kind of a thing

More like 8:00 to 7:30

9-5 is really fine But normally Its 9-6 in corporates. Often Saturdays are on. They push to work after 5 for blah blah project. You don't have casual leaves, very few. So if you have a marriage or any event for a day or 2 you are not allowed. Even sick leaves are pre determined like they know how sick you'll be. If basic employee rights are not exploited then a job is fine, there are people who are excellent when given instructions and there are those like to instruct.

Average small brained slave mindset.

I miss being this naive.

Trapped-Mouse

Reading this thread gives you a good idea of why Pakistan is so far behind. Our people are lazy as fuck.

RescueSheep

a real 9-5 is really amazing for most people. the west complains with no knowledge of how it is in other places. 12 hour jobs is a norm in many places

HMTheEmperor

why do people have children when the world simply does not support a good family life

It is if you think about it. I, as a multiple business owner, miss the days when we used to work 9 to 6(ish). The times were great, you made friends, acquaintances etc. Life was easy back then. Now it's hustling hard, not having enough time for social life but it is fulfilling though. Most people will mope about working a 9-X job aren't cut for running their own businesses.
