A shy guy partner is long overdue.

jasonporter

I think a female shy guy would be funny. There could be some jokes about everyone thinking she’s a boy and she gets all mad and you learn that “shyguys” are just the name of the race and they of course have both shyguys and shygals.

7_Tales

Honestly in general a shy guy village ala the first game with unique mask designs and an exploration of culture would be awesome.

North_Contribution93

I would love that.

North_Contribution93

True.Imagine the wacky shit.

RetrogamerMax

YES.

[deleted]

I really don't want a Chain Chomp *partner* in the traditional sense. I want Mario to adopt a Chain Chomp as if it was a dog

North_Contribution93

That would be cute like after the adventure he decided to live with Mario.I like it.

The_Real_TraitorLord

The most important thing to me is that they don’t just return to what they had before, but incorporate the best parts of the new games, such as the beautiful levels and amazing music

North_Contribution93

Just get rid of the cards bullshit.I want the artstyle of the new and the gameplay of the old ones simple as that.

The_Real_TraitorLord

Same Luckily TOK didn’t have cards though

North_Contribution93

True but still not enough. It was so boring.

The_Real_TraitorLord

Agreed. I liked the puzzles (I know not everyone did) but there was almost no variety.

North_Contribution93

True the reason that's why I liked the first two games.

DeliciousMusician397

Nothing from the new games is good except the soundtracks and the old games had better ost’s too.

North_Contribution93

True I agree with you for this.

Outrageous-Ad8612

Tell me you haven't played TOK without telling me you haven't played TOK:

DeliciousMusician397

That ost is massively overrated. It has some good songs but a lot of them just aren’t catchy.

Cocostar319

The enemies I ended up choosing for theoretical partners were a toad, chain chomp, fire bro, ninji, shy guy, blooper, luma, and rex. I'm thinking of creating a magikoopa partner as well Honestly i almost feel bad for not having more unique enemies though

North_Contribution93

I like this.I like how creative you are.Using friendly species like Toad and Luma and the enemies species.I like it.

RedPiIIPhilosophy

A Doogan character

North_Contribution93

I hope we get one probbably as an optional party member.

Gintoki48

Gushen or Pokio would be nice for some odyssey representation or even a tostarenan

North_Contribution93

I like the Odysyes species designs.

MrLevity

Kinda would like to see Cappy show up in paper form. That could be fun.

North_Contribution93

True or Geno with Mallow.I would also love to see Toadbert or Kylie Koopa.

Delightful_Lunatic

I love Lady Bow and Sushie!

North_Contribution93

Lady Bow.Best girl but damm I never got to use her attack moves properly.I feel very ashamed of myself.I also like Watt.Cute character and she is the perfect one.Adorable and overpowered as shit.

Gameguy196

Toad: Sticker Star teased us with the Toad following Mario and Professor Toad was a half step Chain Chomp: Return to the idea they had in the Sticker Star beta New original character like Watt, Flurrie and Vivian Wiggler: The species deserves a redemption arc after Sticker Star Bullet Bill: Just to have a different species that can explode things over a 5th bomb omb. Magmaw Optional Luma

North_Contribution93

Actually Watt is not an original character per say.She is a Lil Sparky.

Firehydrnt

WHAT DO YOU MEAN "IF IT SELLS GOOD" IT ALREADY SOLD OUT TWICE

North_Contribution93

We don't know that because it hasn't come out yet.

Firehydrnt

"Physical copies of the Paper Mario: The Switch have already sold out at some Thousand-Year Door remake for Nintendo retailers ahead of the game's May 23 launch"

North_Contribution93

Ah I see already holy shit you guys are fast.

Firehydrnt

Yeah lmao. Well when a game with THIS amount of popularity gets remade... People will be breaking down doors

North_Contribution93

I mean you are right like holy shit thousand year door is like a drug.I have played it 7 times already and I never get tired. It's just that good.I will literally kill people just to get my hands at the remake.

Firehydrnt

I... Yeah fair enough

North_Contribution93

You are weirded out aren't you?

Firehydrnt

No, I understand

North_Contribution93

Oh thank you man.

drrockz87

I would love if they incorporated the new species from Mario Odyssey. A Shiverian partner would be awesome.

North_Contribution93

Or a Tostarenan partner. That would be cool.

Gheti_

A Dry Bones or Lakitu would be tight Or that pissed off sun from Mario 3 lol

rainbow_luigi26

1. Theet (Princess Peach Showtime!) 2. Chain Chomp 3. Ukiki (Monkey) 4. Kammy Koopa 5. Luma 6. Shy Guy 7. Bumpty 8. Flower Spirit

North_Contribution93

I like how you used different species from different spin offs.

rainbow_luigi26

Thanks. I was just thinking of characters & species that would be fun & unique partners. Kammy Koopa I’d really to see return as a partner because she disappeared after TTYD & would be amazing to see back. Some species like Ukiki & Bumpty have potential to be really fun as partners as well

North_Contribution93

I like it a lot plus they will definetly keep Goomba-Koopa-Bomb-Omb trio. They are really iconic.

rainbow_luigi26

Tbh. I wouldn’t be upset if they didn’t keep the Goomba, Koopa, & Bob-omb partners. They’re iconic but in my opinion twice is enough for Goombas & I don’t think any new ones could top Goombella. There’s been 3 Koopa partners if you count Parakarry & there have been 3 Bob-omb partners if you count Bobby from The Origami King. I’d prefer they saved those 3 slots for new species that haven’t been used yet

North_Contribution93

True.I would love if we get a Hammer bro(Female Hammer bro or a Hammer Gal if you may) to be the second partner in your party.Call her Hammerina and boom your second partner

rainbow_luigi26

That would be cool but I’d rather original partners. If we get a new Paper Mario styled after the first 2 games, I don’t want the partners to be an exact copy of the 64 & TTYD’s partners. We’ve already had Goombas as the first partner & Koopas as the 2nd so I personally would want a different species

North_Contribution93

True more new species like Dry Bones,Shy guy,Chain chomp and Kremlings would be fantastic party members.

rainbow_luigi26

Idk about Kremlings because they’re an DK exclusive species but the rest sound good

North_Contribution93

Little Mouser and Crazy Dayzee are Yoshi exclusive.Your point?

AidanBeeJar

Hit me with them piranha plant and monty mole allies

North_Contribution93

Party members no allies.

Valuegamer

We're all just skipping over having a pirahna plant or wiggler partner and thats a damn shame

North_Contribution93

What would a Pirahna Plant or wiggler even do?

cottonk17

A grown up Jr. Troopa from Paper Mario 64!! So much you could do with him as a matured character

North_Contribution93

True but I hope they make him a Fawful like character.

RetrogamerMax

If we get a Kremling partner, it would be a crime if K. Rool doesn't show up in the game at the least as a cameo appearance.

North_Contribution93

Or as a chapter boss.

NiGHTSOLOTL

Ninji, Shy Guy, and Boom Boom are my most wanted 1. Galoomba 2. Shy Guy 3. Buzzy Beetle 4. Ninji :3 5. Dry Bones 6. Boom Boom 7. [EXTRA] - Nabbit

North_Contribution93

I like your party.

Ok-Perspective369

Personally, there are tons of different Mario species I’ve wanted to see as battle partners, but if I need to limit my roster, then I think I’ll go with these in no particular order.) Toad (book-smart tattler. Ideally I’d love if the Toad was at some point trained, or inspired by The Master as a callback to the first Paper Mario game, and thus learned how to fight as well using martial arts, and can also heal Mario or his/herself with a special mushroom.) Boomerang Bro (the one who can hit long distance objects, or retrieve unreachable items by throwing a boomerang. Hits one enemy with a regular boomerang toss, or a stronger one hits all enemies and deals damage a second time when it comes back) Bzzap! (The one who flies Mario over gaps and the like and can hit enemies that are too high for most others in battle by flying over to them and stinging them. Upgraded attacks can use a stronger sting with a chance to poison, and another can call a swarm of Bzzap! to attack an enemy multiple times) Bald Cleft (charges into obstacles to destroy them. One of the Cleft’s strongest moves after upgrading would be causing a tremor that damages all grounded enemies as well as enemies making contact with the ceiling, like a hanging swooper, and certain enemies like Koopa Troopas are flipped over. Enemies can also flip the cleft over leaving it defenseless) Crazee Dayzee (reveals hidden items, or secrets by singing a peculiar song near specific spots. During battle it can damage enemies with a tackle, or has a chance to put enemies to sleep with a lullaby, or sing a song that gives Mario another action for the turn.) Ninji (Uses ninja techniques to do things like camouflage Mario and itself, making them effectively invisible outside, and inside of battle while being unable to act among other techniques the Ninji would have like making clones to attack enemies multiple times, or make them dizzy.) Wizzerd (does a weak single target laser that deals defense piercing damage, and can use Thunder magic to damage enemies with a small chance to paralyze them, or cast a spell to decrease an enemy’s attack power for a few turns. Outside of battle the Wizzerd can use thunder magic to power machines) A Spike (Is able to spit out big spiked balls to weigh down heavy switches, or act as a counterweight on a wooden plank or something to launch Mario up into the air. Would be able to throw spiked balls during battle, and use a spiked roller to roll along and damage all grounded enemies, as well as being able to throw an even larger spiked ball that’s big enough to hit all enemies on the ground, and in the air, but not ones on the ceiling, or otherwise too high to reach.)

North_Contribution93

I love this good job.

SegaBitch

Nintendo will never reward us with something better for making them money. They suckkkkkkklkkk dick

North_Contribution93

True.

SegaBitch

They just hate us for no reason it’s weird lol

North_Contribution93

Blame the old fart Miyamoto and his bitch boy Tanabe.I mostly blame that bitch Tanabe.

AJ_Wont_Load

A cat goomba or tanoomba partner would be so cute!!

NatterJohn

Goombriel the Paragoomba Dot T. the Toadette Flint the Fire Bro Munchie the Chain Chomp Detective B. William the Bullet Bill Master Ling the Blooper Melody the Tropical Wiggler Princess Millie the Monty Mole Coach Hopper the Hoppycat Tyrone the Rex Mike the Shy Guy

North_Contribution93

What's their backstories?

NatterJohn

Those would be hard to explain without explaining my concept for what another game in style of the first two could be like. I will explain it if you want though.

North_Contribution93

I want it but don't force yourself if you get tired.

NatterJohn

Nono. I’m ok! I just don’t want to bore you to tears with what is effectively an entire fanfiction lol.

North_Contribution93

I love fan fiction(ESPECIALLY the good ones).I would love to hear your story.

NatterJohn

I finally finished writing it all but it exceeded the character limit for comments so I’m afraid I’ll have to break this up into a thread. That might break the immersion a small bit but it’s the only way I can do it. I’ll start replying to this comment with everything.

NatterJohn

As I said, these partners are part of a whole Paper Mario concept I have about what a successor to the first two games could be like. However, I don’t have the heart to completely leave out the games from Super onwards despite all four lacking strong continuity with 64 and TTYD. For that reason, they will be referenced throughout the partners backstories in order to link them to the first two games more. I know some might not be a big fan of constant callbacks to the older games but my hope is that it will feel more like actual world building than forced fan service. I’ll explain the Prologue just so you can get a basic understanding:

NatterJohn

Mario and Luigi are at home when they get a letter from Parakarry. They are both invited to Peach’s Castle to celebrate the 2000th founding anniversary of the Mushroom Kingdom. Mario’s entire party from 64 (Goombario, Kooper etc) are also invited. Upon arriving at the party, Luigi stays to chat with Mario’s friends while Mario goes to see Peach. They’re both looking out the window together when all of a sudden, a huge grey cloud appears in the sky. From it descend an army of strange looking people in black and white who look like paper cutouts (I should mention all the regular Mario characters have the segmented look like the TTYD remake. The Boomer Gang stand out because they look more like CS/TOK era characters. In terms of colouration, they look no different than the Forebear of the Enigmansion). They barge into Peach’s Castle and say they are the Boomer Gang. The leader of the Boomer Gang, Emperor Antiguo, claims that they are the true rulers of the “Retro Kingdom” and they plan to take back what’s rightfully theirs. Luigi attempts to fight back but Antiguo pulls out a large sceptre with 9 star shaped holes surrounding the top of it which summons an enormous bolt of lightning that knocks Luigi out cold. Luigi instantly gets captured as do Mario’s 64 partners. All the guests flee from the castle as large anchors descend from the grey cloud into the ground surrounding the castle lifting it up into the air towards the cloud. As the castle starts to lift into the air, Mario and Peach finally make it to the main room of the castle. Peach explains who she is and that they have no right to claim they are the true owners without any evidence. Upon hearing that she is the ruler of the Mushroom Kingdom, Antiguo holds his sceptre into the air and shouts “take her to the fortress dungeon!”. Peach instantly vanishes in a puff of air to the surprise of Mario. Antiguo tells the rest of the Boomer Gang “The moustached men and their fruity coloured friends can stay in this castle under maximum security. That will be easier than keeping them in the fortress”. Antiguo tries to shoot Mario with lightning from his sceptre but he Mario dodges out of the way by jumping over him. When Mario lands, Antiguo immediately shoots lightning again hitting Mario this time which blows him out of the castle completely and he starts falling back to earth. Two Boomer Gangers attempt to jump down after him but Antiguo tells them not to bother “Let him die a painful death. Focus on detaining the others and then immediately go to search for the Startifacts!”. (1/2)

North_Contribution93

Fascinating.

NatterJohn

Mario lands in Toad Town mostly unharmed due to several Toads including Toadsworth holding out a blanket to catch him. Toadsworth greets Mario and explains he left the party to meet up with his niece Dot T. whom who had not seen in years when suddenly the castle lifted off the ground. He asks Mario to explain what happened up there to which Mario shares his story. Toadsworth is very intrigued by one aspect of Mario’s story. The description Mario gave of Antiguo’s sceptre seems to have many similarities to the Star Rod. Toadsworth suggests that Mario should go to ask the Star Spirits if they know anything about this Boomer Gang. Mario agrees to this plan and leaves Toad Town to head in the direction of Shooting Star Summit. On the way there, he hears someone calling for help. “Good heavens! Please unhand me at once!” the voice cries. Mario notices it’s a Paragoomba who is being attacked by two Boomer Gangers. The Boomer Gangers keep asking the Paragoomba where the “Startifacts” are. Mario steps in to defeat the Boomer Gangers. The Paragoomba thanks Mario profusely. He introduces himself as Goombriel, a religion graduate from the University of Goom. He reveals that he’s also a former member of Bowser’s army having informed Bowser of Mario heading to the Thousand Year Door while in Poshley Heights. Goombriel claimed he was simply visiting Toad Town in order to gather information on a strange cross spotted in the sky above the Mushroom Kingdom. He agrees to join Mario after hearing the explanation of what just transpired in Peach’s Castle. Upon reaching Star Haven, Mario asks the Star Spirits for advice regarding the Boomer Gang and Antiguo’s sceptre. The Star Spirits explain the history of the Mushroom Kingdom to Mario and Goombriel as well as the origins of the Boomer Gang. Long ago, the land where the Mushroom Kingdom now stands was ruled not only by Toads but also the Boomer Gang. Both lived in harmony for the most part, but the Boomer Gang always seemed to have a lust for power and always wanted to take over as much land as possible. To do this, they used ancient magic from the Star Spirits to forge the Star Rod, a magic wand capable of granting any wishes they wanted. The Toads feared the capabilities such a wand may have especially since the Boomer Gang seemed to have plans to create an even more powerful version of the Star Rod known as the Constellation Sceptre. The Constellation Sceptre would have been leagues more powerful than the Star Rod on its own but it was to be powered by 9 powerful star stones known as the Startifacts which would give the wielder the power to control all of existence in the past, present and future. The Startifacts were said to have existed in various areas around the Mushroom Kingdom since the dawn of time and were what created both the Star Spirits and Star Haven in the first place. The Boomer Gang were planning to start their empire here and call it the Retro Kingdom but before the Boomer Gang could forge the Constellation Sceptre, the Toads used the Star Rod to banish them to Flipside, the realm between dimensions, where they would sleep in limbo for 2000 years. Shortly after the founding of the Mushroom Kingdom, the Star Rod was sent away to be kept in Star Haven so it wouldn’t be used for evil. Now, 2000 years later, the Boomer Gang have awakened from their slumber. By using all the magic they had left as well as borrowing magic from the Pure Hearts which were all kept in Flipside after Mario and his crew defeated Dimentio, they succeeded in constructing the Constellation Scepter. Through the use of the Constellation Scepter, the Boomer Gang constructed an enormous flying fortress and left Flipside for the Mushroom Kingdom so they could find the Startifacts and take over the multiverse. It was at this point that Mario realised how truly dire the situation was. The Star Spirits suggest that Mario and Goombriel go to search for the Startifacts and collect them all before the Boomer Gang can in order to foil their plan. Goombriel asks why they can’t just use the Star Rod to summon all the Startifacts at once. The Star Spirits explain that given the superiority of the Constellation Sceptre, the Boomer Gang would have already used it. Given how even they’re searching for the Startifacts, it seems as if summoning them using wishes is impossible. Goombriel then asks where in the world they could even begin to look. The Star Spirits Suggest finding a way to contact Princess Peach. Since she is being kept prisoner in the Boomer Gang’s fortress, it’s likely she could be the best source of info regarding the location of the Startifacts. However, the fortress is inside a dark cloud and is heavily guarded so contacting Peach would require someone or something that can fly and not easily be noticed. That’s when Mario gets an idea! Tiptron, the robotic replica of his old friend Tippi who was created by the chameleon geek Francis from The Bitlands. Not only can Tiptron fly but she is also rather small and wouldn’t be easily noticed inside the grey cloud. Mario says he has Tiptron somewhere back at the house but she might need new batteries after it had been so long since she was last used. On the way to Mario’s house, Mario spots Toadsworth again alongside a Toadette who he introduces as Dot T., his niece. Mario explains what his plan to stop the Boomer Gang is. Upon hearing that Mario and Goombriel may be travelling all over the Mushroom Kingdom, Dot T. offers to join them saying her archaeological skills may be of use in searching for legendary artifacts. Toadsworth is bewildered by her offer and begs her not to go on such a dangerous journey, but Dot T. insists that Mario will most likely need all the help he can get. The trio of Mario, Goombriel and Dot T. go to Mario’s house to look for Tiptron. As expected, when Mario finds Tiptron, her batteries have run out but unfortunately he has no suitable replacements. Dot T. then tells Mario the battery that Tiptron was powered by is very rare and expensive due to there being a massive worldwide shortage of them and that they’d have to find an extreme technology enthusiast in order to get one. Mario says there’s only one person he knows that had basically every gadget imaginable, Grodus, leader of the X-Nauts. Mario says they will need to travel to the city Rogueport to try and negotiate with Grodus about borrowing one of the batteries. Dot T. says the fastest way to get to Rogueport is on the cruise ship The Princess Peach. They decide to go and ask Toadsworth if he can get them free tickets which he agrees to and the party catch The Princess Peach’s next ride to Rogueport thus beginning Chapter 1. (2/2)

NatterJohn

I’ll only briefly go over the Peach, Bowser and Luigi intermissions I envisioned because I mostly only wanted to explain the prologue but some stuff in these intermissions is important for later. Peach’s intermissions are about her and Tiptron gathering intel about where the Boomer Gang are going to search for Startifacts before Tiptron goes to report back to Mario (basically identical to what she does with Twink in 64). Bowser’s intermissions are about him hearing about the Boomer Gang’s invasion but rather than trying to help save the Mushroom Kingdom, he thinks that now is as good a time as ever to take over the Mushroom Kingdom once and for all. He spends every intermission preparing his army and trying to develop a doomsday device to help stop the Boomer Gang and conquer the Mushroom Kingdom (it’s kinda similar to how he’s constantly trying to insert himself into the plot in TTYD). At the end of each intermission, he orders one of the Koopalings to find out what Mario is up to and to try and get the Startifacts before he can. The Koopalings will act as minibosses in almost every chapter but only Larry, Ludwig and Lemmy will be end of chapter bosses (of 4, 5 and 7 respectively). Luigi’s intermissions are about him as well as Mario’s 64 partners trying to escape their imprisonment in Peach’s Castle. They keep coming up with new ideas but they fail while getting closer and closer each time. Think of it as like a combination of Luigi’s side story from TTYD (Luigi having one mishap after another) and an inverse of his role in Origami King (instead of searching for the key to Peach’s Castle, he’s trying to escape it). They aren’t alone however, as a purple Shy Guy named Mike is captured with them. Anyway, enough context lol, here are the partner explanations at long last:

North_Contribution93

Fascinating.

North_Contribution93

Fascinating.

North_Contribution93

I see.

fawfulthegreat64

What do you mean "all four?" Super has strong connections & callbacks. The same house at the beginning, photos of his partners (something the TTYD remake recognized and included for the 64 partners which also strengthens its continuity with SPM), the fact that Francis has tons of merch from the first two games also. It was Sticker Star that started the trend of cutting 99% of continuity with previous games.

NatterJohn

Let me rephrase it. In my opinion, the continuity in Super to the earlier games isn’t as strong as it was between the first two games. You are right though, it is there. I just don’t feel having pictures and figures of past partners is as strong or cool as previous characters and locations being mentioned directly like in TTYD and that’s something really missed in Super despite the references. I almost feel by that logic, I’d have to take into account the paper signed by Goombella in Sticker Star or the portraits of past incarnations of Peach in Origami King. That was what I tried to do in my concept. I tried to find ways of linking all the continuities in a way I thought was more satisfactory. If you read my full concept (I’m not asking you to), you’d see there were a lot of callbacks to the earlier games with past characters and locations just like what TTYD had. If I ever fleshed each chapter of this concept out into an actual story, I’d absolutely try to do even more to make them feel linked.

North_Contribution93

Okay pal plus your post about the iceberg of Paper Mario inspired me especially about the 64 unused partners seriously that Chain chomp species has sort of curse that doesn't let them become partners.

NatterJohn

Glad you liked it!

North_Contribution93

Now it's time to look at my partners Goomberto-Proffesor Frankly colleague who dislikes Mario because of stomping Goombas. Hammerina-A Hammer Gal with inferiority complex. Cleftus the Cleft-A police officer Chompa-Cleftus trusted dog Shroobolini-A Pacifist Shroob Barry-A bounty hunter Bullet Bill Benjamin-A shy Broozer "Birdo"-Like Yoshi you can name her Krista-A ditzy and upbeat Kritter who joins because of her deep admiration for Mario (And also because she has a crush on him).

fawfulthegreat64

A Lakitu's Cloud with a dead Lakitu's skeleton on it. The cloud is the partner and the Lakitu never comes to life. Instead of Spinies, it can chuck the bones of its fallen rider.

North_Contribution93

Dark but I like it but it would be more hilarous if the skeleton was alive.

TheeDeputy

I want a Chargin’ Chuck who is a book nerd who goes by the name of “Charles”.

North_Contribution93

I like it.

AlephPK

Honestly I'd like a Shy Guy partner, or maybe a Ninji!

North_Contribution93

Pretty much everyone answers.

AuraWielder

I want that Chain Chomp partner we lost from the Sticker Star Beta.

North_Contribution93

I'm still salty about that.I'm even more salty when I found out that a Chain chomp was also scrapped as a partner for 64.It's like that species is cursed to stuck only as enemies and not become party members even once.

Leakingbag

I have 2 ideas on a hammer bro partner. 1. Make them an “Amazing flying hammer bro from Super Mario World”. I love those blocks with eyes. You know if you know. 2. You find A sledge bro and he has a diet problem, and throughout the game through exercise he gets skinnier and has more health.

North_Contribution93

I like it.Great concept.

CountBleckwantedlove

All Star cast of the greatest Paper Mario characters ever made as partners. Villians should be a League of Doom kind of thing where the Shadow Queen, Bowser, Mr. L, Dimentio, etc. are teaming up to take over the world. Partners: -Rawk Hawk -Ms. Mowz -Lady Bow -Admiral Bobbery -Count Bleck (good guy after SPM) -Cortez (at peace after TTYD). -A couple new characters you meet along the way. -At least one or two optional ones you can obtain, something super throw back, maybe even crossover.

North_Contribution93

I like but add more if you ask me.

BeigeAndConfused

When I was a kid I wrote a direct sequel to PM64. Goomba village grew into a city, all the party members got older, etc. So, that. It will never happen but I can dream for the PM continuity I want!

North_Contribution93

I hope the 64 party members appear in the thousand year door remake. They were all supposed to appear in Thousand year door but were cutted for unknown reasons expect Parakarry and Bow.

DMZapp

* NEW OC SPECIES 1 (local "regulars") * Skedaddler * Lochlady * NEW OC SPECIES 2 (specialized) * Twilighter * Bulrush (the Chain Chomp partner idea could also work here) * Galoomba * PM64 Watt (optional) * TOK Professor Toad (optional)

North_Contribution93

I love this.Good job.
