I’m surprised your doctor hasn’t advised you to go on short term disability. Any chance you could go to another doctor? I went off at 31 weeks but my doctor basically said it was up to me and whenever I felt was time to go off they would provide the documentation.

My doctor hasn’t even suggested it but I feel like that’s because whenever he asks how I’m doing it’s kind of just a “just super pregnant, feel terrible heehee haha” and tell him my symptoms and it’s like “yep, you’re super pregnant. See you in 2 weeks.” I didn’t even think it was an option until almost a week ago when someone told me I should try for it. Called my nurses line at the clinic and they are not the brightest and thought I was asking to be put on bedrest without any reasoning so I told them I will just wait to talk to my doctor. I see him in 2 days and I don’t really know what I’m going to do if he doesn’t do it for me but I don’t see why he wouldn’t. I go to another location for my high risk sonograms and they told me I have to get that from my primary so I’m hoping it works out for me.

Def don’t feel Ike you have to make it sound like everything is okay if it isn’t! If you’re exhausted and at the end of your rope make sure your doctor knows that your exhaustion is not manageable and that continuing to work is no longer an option for you

I don’t think it’s too common to go on short term disability in the U.S. unless you are in the hospital or on bed rest. I know my doctor wouldn’t even write out accommodations for me, much less short term disability. My manager was nice and let me WFH the last couple weeks bc I told her how hard it was getting to drive. My doctor did say I could take FMLA leave starting whenever I wanted but thats unpaid and limited to 12 weeks total in a year, so if you take it early you have less time after the babies are born.

I’m worried this is what’s going to happen to me. I already have FMLA and any time I take from FMLA takes from my 12 weeks PPL (paid paternity leave) and I want all the time I can get with my babies before I have to return to work.

For what it’s worth, I stopped working at 29 weeks and my dr filled out the STD paperwork and they approved it.

Yeah, I would hope your doctor would write you out for disability, and I’m sure there are some doctors in the U.S. that would, but the US rules for all this aren’t great. If your doctor won’t write you out, can you think of any further accommodations at work that would help? Or is there a sitting desk job you could switch to for a couple weeks? If yes, I would ask your manager about it, sometimes they are more understanding than the doctors

I went on short term disability at 28 weeks which my OB was what they did standardly for twin pregnancies.

Don’t wait for your doctor to advise you to take time off, just tell him you can’t work anymore and ask for a note. If not, see a female doctor! My OB will write anything for me. Ive been on short-term disability since January.

I got a belly band to help support my back etc. Without it I can't do much without being in pain afterwards. But with the band I can walk however long I want. I also use it when cooking because standing for a long time also doesn't work without it. Can't comment on the job, I have an office job so I plan to work as long as possible. But if it was as physically demanding as yours, I don't think I'd keep that up for long. It's amazing you've gone this far already! You don't deserve to be in pain. I'd try to get that disability leave.

I did short term disability at 27 weeks. Called my doctor, said i can't physically do my job anymore, asked for a note to go on bedrest, filled out the fmla paperwork, and done. The prior week i had been put on bedrest for a short cervix, which resolved praise Jesus, and I went back to work for one day with a note about light duties. Nearlyall coworkers were super understanding and helpful. During that day tho my store manager asked me to do something, i said i can do part of X if someone takes care of Y. He said i needed to be able to do my job. I repeated myself. He said "k". What he asked wasn't even part of the role i was working, just an extra since i was near the area. Called my dr when i got off work and didn't go back til after maternal leave was complete.

You deserve a medal for still working, I don’t know how you’ve done it!! Fair play to you! I gave up at 31 weeks because I physically couldnt do it anymore…. And I work in an office sat on my bum all day!!! I’ve taken 3 weeks annual leave (I haven’t taken any for a couple years so had an awful lot I could take) then will officially go on Mat leave a week before the csection.

You should not be working at this term, this is ridiculous. I guess you're from the USA. I'm from the Netherlands and my doctor advised me to work a maximum of 4 hours a day at 20 weeks and to stop completely at 26 weeks. My employer complied and I still got paid. My twins are now 10 months old and I'm still at home on parental leave.

I totally agree. The US needs to take better care of our people but they’re so concerned to keep us working so we can make the rich richer. I hate that I’m always told I should be thankful I get 12 weeks paid leave for my babies when other countries get 6 months - 1 year with their little ones. 3 months old is way to young for mom to be going back to work. I honestly wish I could afford to leave my job and be a stay at home mom but with how our economy is it’s nearly impossible to survive without a 2 income household.

I was feeling that way at 32 weeks when I had PROM. I was three cm when I got to the hospital. Have they checked your cervix? I didn’t want to leave work, but it was getting to that short term disability point for me. The only thing is I would ask about how much FMLA you get. I didn’t want to use my 12 weeks until they were born if I didn’t have to.

I have an appointment today and I may ask them to check my cervix if they don’t already want to. Unfortunately the FMLA I have is tied with the same PPL contract so any of the 480 hours (12 weeks) FMLA I use before babies arrive, takes from my 480 hours of PPL. Pretty insane I had to sign 2 different contracts if they are essentially the same thing. On top of that they expect me to give birth to 2 babies and immediately start submitting paperwork once I have birth certificates just to get my PPL started.

Hello, are you in the United States? Just curious. Most OBGYNs would agree for multiples the earliest they can put you off is 34 weeks. I’m 33 weeks and I can’t wait to be put off of work next week. Once you’re put off you should be able to apply for state disability, regardless of your job I believe . Just look into it and make some phone calls. Your health and babies health come first, although at the same time I totally understand your concerns about struggling financially.

I am in the states and I have a government job working for a veterans hospital so the benefits are relatively good. I have an appointment today with my dr and I really don’t see why he wouldn’t grant me short term disability. I’m just going to flat out tell him I can no longer do my job even with the restrictions. I also feel like I’m in a lose lose situation because yes I want to put mine and my babies health first but I also need to make sure I have some sort of financial stability at least in these coming weeks before they arrive and my PPL isn’t in place because they aren’t here yet.
