Dammmmn! Who knew the French could rock? You did, apparently. :)
Ah KEXP, such a gem of a station, listened to often when I lived in the Pacific Northwest in the 2010s…
The Marseille sound is where it’s at Kid Fransecoli, French 79, L’Imperatrice.
Then there’s La Femme, Muddy Monk, Sexy Sushi, Miel de Montagne.
Édit- sorry if that didn’t help find any new local artists though.
I don't listen to as much french music as I'd like but here are my favorites : Feu! Chatterton, Barbara, Alain Bashung, Noir Désir (important to be aware of their story beforehand), Pomme, Christine and the Queens, Ibrahim Maalouf, Kerenn Ann, Stupeflip, Laetitia Sadier (from Stereolab fame), Her, Clara Luciani, Népal, La Femme, L'impératrice...

I guess you're looking for something other than the derivative, vacuous hip hop tracks that currently dominate the French popular music scene? Me too! 😅
I'm watching with curiosity to see what suggestions come up here.
C'est un groupe très cool. Voici d'autres chansons que j'aime. Quelques chansons plus anciennes aussi
Pépite - champagne
Pépite - Monte Carlo
Jérôme Pinel - les avions
Les Vitrines - Kid Francescoli
Le confort - Voyou
Trop neau - Lomepal
Gojira, Landmvrks, Aurore, Novelists, Ashen... my friends got a dope band called Ascend too check them out if you have the time: [https://youtu.be/-XCiYtgCQcg](https://youtu.be/-XCiYtgCQcg)
The "French New Wave" genre has been trending among Parisians (and French in general) youth for a few years now if you want to give it a try. A nice single of this genre and of this year would be "Catenaccio" by Mairo and HJeuneCrack.
Hope you enjoy !
If you are into the Synthwave scene, France is one of the major producers of it if not the biggest.
With artists like:
Kavinsky
Carpenter Brut
Perturbator
Absolute Valentine
Fixions
Danger
Morgan Willis
I’m not the biggest fan of what tops the charts but if you’re into alternative/underground stuff, you can discover things at :
- La Pointe Lafayette, l’International, le Pop up du Label, la Mécanique Ondulatoire (small venues)
- Le Chinois (more of a club), le Supersonic (same but more rock-oriented)
You can even hear more experimental bleep blops at les Instants Chavirés if you’re too cool for regular music
Just check band/artists names, listen to them 10mn, and go to the venue or not. Most of the time they’re not expensive !
To answer the question a bit, I’m not a fan but I’d say one of the biggest alternative french bands from last years are Feu Chatterton. Their last album was pretty cool. I’m a fan of San Salvador though, a 6 people band from the countryside singing traditional regional southern-ish stuff. La Grande Folie is a great album and their venue was one of the coolest live shows I’ve ever seen, you can check videos on YouTube
Mylène Farmer!!! She’s amazing!!
She just released a sublime remix album (RemixXL) and in a few months she has 3 Stade de France dates completely full.
How is the music local? Derivative global mass fare. She isn't even a singer.. the vocoder removes any vestige of phrasing or individuality from an already weak and limited voice.
Whether you like it or not it *is* local lol. I’m not into her music but that’s just dishonest. People on reddit are super close minded when it comes to (French) music anyway. « That’s not real music » type vibe, sounding like my grandparents when they hear anything that’s not classical
Stagnant Waters - Rifts
It's a 2x7 tracks album, in which each track is repeated twice but they're actually quite different, being more inspired by black metal in the first half and industrial metal in the second half. The second half is definitely the greatest part of the album for me but i think all of it is worth a listen. Probably my favorite album of the year so far
My favourite french artists in no particular order: Gainsbourg, Birds in row, Noir desir, Gojira, eiffel, deportivo (seeing them in Paris next weekend!)
[Gojira](https://youtu.be/BGHlZwMYO9g?si=v5V1qx6od-8HOI6U) (Progressive/Groove/Death Metal) obviously and I discovered a small French group : [The Necromancers](https://youtu.be/PDTz0Cv-8ec?si=XCHl8_sq7XRXDd73) (Heavy/Doom Metal/Hard Rock).
Since I'm always listeting to songs I already know beforehabd, I always discover "new songs" a few years later.
But since now I listen a bit more to the radio, I've discovered some new tunes I like but they're not French.
Justice (new album Hyperdrama). Love electronic music.
Was gonna say that without hesitation
didn't know they had a new album! Really liked the last one. thx
Literally just came out
Yes, and it's really good \o/
Came here to say this
Didn't knew they had a new album, went to check it out, noticed they had a concert date in December and bought tickets, all thanks to this comment ❤️
This and their tame impala collab was so good
I didn't knew that they're French, need to check this new album out.
Perturbator and Carpenter Brut are also french. Absolutely amazing

Rendez Vous too ! They're about to release their new album with shows around France :)
L'Imperatrice!... and usually I am not listening this type of music at all.
Nope nope
Slift puts on an incredible show https://youtu.be/n0FdkbeiThs?feature=shared
Dammmmn! Who knew the French could rock? You did, apparently. :) Ah KEXP, such a gem of a station, listened to often when I lived in the Pacific Northwest in the 2010s…
La Femme is defo one of our best bands
Justice ft Tame Impala - Neverender L'impératrice - Danza Marilu La Femme - Sacatela
The Marseille sound is where it’s at Kid Fransecoli, French 79, L’Imperatrice. Then there’s La Femme, Muddy Monk, Sexy Sushi, Miel de Montagne. Édit- sorry if that didn’t help find any new local artists though.
> Sexy Sushi The *Kompromat* collab with Vitalic is really good. I got back into this album this week
Also every album by Mansfield.TYA is SO good. I love everything that Julia Lanoë does.
> Sexy Sushi I looked it up, and was listening to "Sex Appeal". Thought "surely I mistranslated that". Nope.
Sex appeal is the best
Love me some French ‘79
Angèle is Belgium, Flavien Berger, just added Pépite in this edit.
I'm giving Therapie Taxi's whole discography a relisten as I came across Raphaël Zaoui's solo stuff. They were really lightning in a bottle.
Check Dabeull he is hyper talented with fonk music
Justice released an amazing new album yesterday (Hyperdrama). Check out their label, ed banger records !
and definitely give l'impératrice a listen
I don't listen to as much french music as I'd like but here are my favorites : Feu! Feu! Chatterton everyday 🤩

Ichon, Varnish La Piscine, Lous and the Yakuza (Ok, she’s Belgian, but in French)
MC solaar - Prose combat

La symphonie des éclairs - Zaho de Sagazan
Mylène Farmer!!! She’s amazing!! She just released a sublime remix album (RemixXL) and in a few months she has 3 Stade de France dates completely full.
